The ScoutCast – Episode 123 – Ghost

The title summons up imagery of Granville straddling me at the Potter’s wheel, lovingly helping to craft a clay creation as we unite to sculpt out a Van Persie bust – in true Lionel Ritchie’s “Hello” style.

That’s probably lost approximately half of our potential audience who are too young to recall the analogy. The other half are likely to be repelled by the image of Granville and I caught in a Swayze/Moore-like clinch.

If you’re part of the minority still sticking around, curious to hear how the above nonsense translates into a podcast, then listen up. You’ll catch the plenty of Wildcard ribbing, a tale of captain calamity exposed by this week’s community questions and the usual array of regulars.

Prepare to be haunted via this link or exorcise your right to stream via the handy player below.

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

Hello DZ'ers, got a few short questions

    1.Play Januzaj or Puncheon
2.Who should be my first sub?(Ward or Azpili?, I am playing both Clyne and Chambers because I'm not sure which of them will start)

        Puncheon is easy.

.. but Azpi is defending against City at Etihad.

I wouldn't. I'm on a no-carb, no-hit diet. it makes my team lean and mean.

You nearly never recoup the 4pts hit for defenders, and is Clyne in your starting 11 ? Probably not. wait until you have a FT and no other compelling needs.

As I said my first choice defenders are Kosc Chambers Clyne and then the subs in order are Azpili and Ward. Obviously one of Chambers and Clyne wont play!

i can't take all the anti-puncheon innuendo on this forum tonight, it's bonkers.

Go look in the stats. He's the best 5th mid there is.

        Away matches, all midfielders:

Puncheon mins per touch in penalty area: 42.2
... which is better than Yaya, Eriksen, Shelvey, Cabaye,
        Mata is 40.0

Puncheon mins per goal attempt in pen area: 76
... which is better than Cabaye, Eriksen, Ramsey, Cazorla, yaya, Lallana,

Puncheon mins per shot on target: 108.6
... sounds bad, but it's better than Silva, Ki, A.Johnson, Mirallas, Januzhype, Lallana, Barkley could manage

Own Puncheon with your head held high, gentlemen.

How on earth does a man get lost on the last page in the DZ...

    So.
Who's in for Joleon Lescott tomorrow? 4.8m, will certainly get minutes at West Ham, and likes to have a headed goal from corner kicks.

If the ManCity new defender deal goes off, I'm swapping him in for Bardsley. This has been a DeadZone exclusive.

So when a price rises on one of your players is it a good thing? Surely it means that lot's of other people have bought the same player as you. Yes it validates your opinion of that player but every time they rise it reduces the value that player has to you because more people will get the benefit from those points.

      1) not by very much, and
      2) you can't play the game and expect to win, if you prioritize differential players at the expense of quality.
      3) if you already had the player, everyone else is late to the party, and the advantage you gain is in the points they didn't get, and in the FT they needed to spend just to keep pace with you

      Here we go:

      RVP good but expensive
Rooney is almost as good but less expensive than RVP.
Mata is good and plays in Midfield unlike the other two who (usually) play upfront. But he hasn't had time to gel yet. But is likely to play every game because is cuptied for Europe

But if others are buying your player at a higher price it leaves them less to spend elsewhere. If someone brings Coleman in now, they will be paying 1.1 more than I bought him for. That leaves them 1.1 less than me to spend elsewhere in their team. I also have the advantage of reaping all of the points the rising player has had, which lead to him rising in the first place. Then knowing when to sell helps you stay ahead of the curve.

i don't agree. "knowing when to sell" is an intangible value, and affects your OWN team, nobody else's.

Don't outsmart yourself here. It's true that others may have bought Coleman for more/less than you, and can do other things with the money.

This only matters in the very improbable case that you and your opponent have the same exact team, and the only difference is your selling price vs. your opponent's.

If you can't say that's the case, then this game is about optimizing the points. That's all. Has nothing to do with budget. You can play the value game, but do so at the expense of points and hits and limiting yourself with logic such as "I wouldn't be able to buy him right back since I sold him for less than he now costs" etc etc etc

Chelsea will play ultra-defensively the way they did at Arsenal and ManU. The game might not have many goals.

Januzaj is a weird situation... I still have no idea how ManU will play with Mata, Rooney and RvP. Mata on the right, Rooney in the hole and Januzaj on the left? It is a possibility.

Whatever I choose, I'm not expecting much.

Whats the deal with Kolarov, got him in my team a couple weeks ago and he gave me nothing but a fat zero and a one pointer. I know a lot of you have been down this path but i can say i feel your pain.

    2 questions.

    1. Best midfielder to own until gw28(outside of Yaya, Hazard, Mirallas or Lallana)?
    2. For this week only - Adebayor or Carroll or Bony or Dzeko?

    Thanks.

Lallana has 1 goal, 3 assists and 3BPs away from home...

JRod has 6 goals, 1 assist and 11BPs away from home...

(ful STO hul whm LIV cpl)

With 4 out of their next 6 away from home, I might take JRod instead... I kinda like the differential aspect as well, as I'll need to make up a few points on those with Lallana...

I hate these kind of WC decisions... 😕

To Enzo this is my WC draft if Aguero is out for a few weeks. Alhough I am trying to decide who Giroud wil become next week if I do:

    Mannone - Boruc
    Ward - Mertesacker - Coleman - Chico - R Bennett
    Eriksen - Hazard - Mata - Yaya - Puncheon
    Benteke - Giroud - Suarez

    If I keep Aguero

    Mannone - Boruc
    Ward - Mertesacker - Coleman - Chico - R Bennett
    Eriksen - Hazard - Mata - Johnson - Puncheon
    Aguero - Giroud - Suarez

With Giroud becoming Benteke next week

Looks solid, bold front 3 in team A while everyone else is going the Sturridge/Utd/Ade route.. Couple of questions -

You think Boruc will keep cleanies in Lovren's absence ? I know Wanyama gives them solidity but a bit iffy on this.. Feel like Adrian is good value

And explain to me this love for Chico, you've had him for ages ?! Especially with Europa resuming and swansea fatigue..

Anyway I'd like to see Boruc+Chico -> Adrian+Azpi if that can be worked out but this is a sweet team anyway

When I have played him he has got me great scores (including last weeks 15). They have 3 very strong fixtures coming up then 2 very good home games in the next 4 and he has only not played 2 games all season. Swansea have just come off a very difficult run of fixtures. Just you see the returns will come. He does have a good goal threat too. All in all great potential

I had actually earmarked Chico for a place in my WC team a few weeks back, but I'm not so sure now... especially after I missed his haul...

They have Napoli away 3 days before they play Palace at home in GW28 which is far from ideal looking forward to their good playable fixtures...

Which means that this would be a very short term move, and I'd only really be looking to play him for the next 3...

And with team B, Johnson's fixtures are about to turn nasty very soon, and the blank gameweek coming up.. Try squeezing in Lallana if you can ? Has a significant ownership in top 10k and could hurt you with double digit hauls ..

    Mannone, Davis
    Baines, Kosc, Gabbi, Chambers, Burner
    Hazard, Mata, Silva, Gerrard, Colback
    Suarez, Aguero, JRod

Used FT on Chester->Chambers, not much to do I reckon.

I've been looking at the FA Cup fixtures and the Premiership fixtures that will have to be moved depending on results.
I’ve assigned the % chance of each premiership team winning – let’s not argue over random 5%’s!

    Fulham (70%) vs Sheffield United
    Sunderland (50%) vs Southampton (50%)
    Cardiff (70%) vs Wigan
Man City (60%) vs Chelsea (40%)
    Everton (65%) vs Swansea (35%)
    Arsenal (55%) vs Liverpool (45%)
    Brighton vs Hull (50%)

Using these %’s here are the fixtures for week 29 with how likely they are to be on:
    WBA vs MUN 100%
    NOR vs STO 100%
    CHE vs TOT 60%
    CPL vs SOU 50%
    WHM vs HUL 50%
    MCI vs AVL 40%
    NEW vs EVE 35%
    ARS vs SWA 30%
    LIV vs SUN 28%
    CAR vs FUL 9%

In the worst case scenario we could have only four games being played.
One of Chelsea and Tottenham will have a fixture.
It is possible that the only other game to be played in week 29 would be either CPL vs SOU or NEW vs EVE.
I thought my Boruc/Mannone rotation meant I was safe in week 29 but if Southampton and Liverpool win (23% chance) then I end up with no keeper – and barely any outfield players!

We'll have two gameweeks to plan once we know the results (assuming no replays) but with no MCI, MUN, SUN or WBA the week before this is going to be tough!

      Most definitely
The top players will keep rising to the top as we see every year. Does not mean you should not jump on a few form waves but keep enough class in your team that you have room to manoeuvre without multiple hits when it comes to catching these

Fair enough. But then why do you see a lot of people opting to downgrade Aguero to Giroud or Benteke rather than Rooney? Surely cash is not the only factor.Or like AJ over other midfield options.

I think this applies at the start of seasons when you have no form to back your decisions up. Class players I would say are those players who hit form more frequently or maintain it through the majority of their career. Those managers who got Suarez in straight after their ban clearly benefitted from his "class" as it allowed them to purchase him when there was no evidence of class against several forwards who had form at the time (Giroud, Benteke, Sturridge, Soldado).

I think this is a valid question at this moment particularly in respect to RVP who I don't think anybody disputes the class of. Certainly him and Suarez are a class apart from the forwards in the Premier League today. But his form this season isn't great. So will his undisputed class bring his form back? The shot of confidence at the weekend certainly wont hurt.
