Scout Notes – Gameweek 24 – Monday

A solitary strike from Branislav Ivanovic is enough to clinch the points for Chelsea at the Etihad. Jose Mourinho’s defence stands firm as City’s 100% home record comes to an end without the services of the stricken Sergio Aguero:

Blues Backline Defies the Etihad
In spite of conceding just two goals in their previous seven league fixtures, Chelsea rolled up to the Etihad as underdogs last night. With the hamstrung Sergio Aguero sitting in the stands and Fernandinho’s agility missing in central midfield, Jose Mourinho’s side were able to repel an attack that had hit Arsenal and Spurs for six and stuck four past United in front of their own fans. Branislav Ivanovic’s first goal since Gameweek 1 earned the Serbian a 14-point haul, though it’s perhaps debatable whether many of his owners were confident enough to hand him a slot in their starting XI.

Having passed the toughest test of all now, Mourinho’s defenders have shown we can rely on them regardless of fixture difficulty. At a time where Arsenal are set to play six of the current top seven over the next nine Gameweeks, doubling up on Chelsea’s backline looks a very viable tactic and, whilst John Terry and Gary Cahill also offer a goal threat, Cesar Azpilicueta has now started 13 of the last 14 Gameweeks and, at 5.3, may appeal to those with limited finances.

Oscar Benched in Tactical Reshuffle
Whilst there’s no doubt the Brazilian is Jose Mourinho’s preferred choice for the role in “the hole” behind a lone striker, it’s clear that his manager will, at times, sacrifice him for the sake of the team. With David Luiz partnered by Nemanja Matic in the double-pivot, Mourinho shifted the versatile Ramires onto the right of the midfield three and opted for Willian behind Samuel Eto’o as Oscar dropped to the bench. Willian has now started seven of the last nine, whilst Oscar has featured in the first XI on five of those occasions after returning from injury. Games against Newcastle and West Brom next week are likely to see the playmaker reinstalled to the first-team after a mere eight-minute appearance last night but, at a time when so many mid-price midfielders are producing the points, many will feel they cannot afford to have an 8.9-priced asset under the risk of rotation.

Negredo‘s Game Time a Worry
The Spaniard returned to the City first-team after missing out against Tottenham with a shoulder complaint. Snapped up by over 25,000 Fantasy managers as a result of Aguero’s hamstring injury, Negredo left his 11% owners thoroughly frustrated after failing to score at the Etihad for only the second time in his last eight home starts. More concerning was Pellegrini’s decision to sub the former Sevilla forward off with just 56 minutes on the clock as Stevan Jovetic got the nod to partner Edin Dzeko for the remainder of the game – after the match, the City boss admitted Negredo is not yet 100% after his recent shoulder complaint. Negredo has now managed 90 minutes just once in the last seven Gameweeks, whilst Dzeko has played the entire match in four of the previous five now, suggesting the Bosnian looks far more reliable to last from start to finish under Pellegrini at the moment.

Etihad Resilience Fading
Last night’s result also continued a run of form which has seen City struggle to keep out their opponents at home. Pellegrini’s side racked up five clean sheets in their first seven at the Etihad and conceded just twice – over the subsequent five, they’ve registered a single shut-out (against Palace) and shipped seven goals. As the Chilean plots to recover from Monday evening’s setback, he’ll be buoyed by City’s remaining visitors – Sunderland, Stoke and Villa roll up in the next five and, with Fulham, Southampton, West Brom and West Ham all yet to arrive, those owning City defenders will be happy to hold in the meantime.

Morning All, (Well you know, nearly).

I hope everyone had a good GW. I have not known a season that has been so hard to get a guaranteed playing squad, either through niggley injuries or unpredictable rotation. Then just as you think it's settled more injuries, rotations, new managers, and the transfer window.
To cap it all the players who are locked in having terrible dips in form.

Care to give me your nailed on form proof players? 6 or more to qualify. 🙂

Terry, Mert, Yaya, Suarez... At a push, Eriksen/Lallana.

I can't choose a keeper as none worth their price have played every game.

My deep meditations on this have brought me to the conclusion that every player who isn't Suarez or Agüero requires some degree of confirmation bias and/or insane troll logic to justify their inclusion.

      Hard one

      Ward (for the price)
      Terry
Coleman (now he's fit again, I think)
      Lallana
      Suarez

Those are the ones I have, can add a few that I haven't got

      Koscielny
      Yaya
      Sturridge

So my midfield has been lightened by S-RvP-S upfront, and I'm a bit short of ideas going forward.

    Team:
    Boruc / (davies)

    Terry / Kos / Bardsley / Parr / Hudson

    Silva / Lallana / Mirallas / Ki / Gnabry

    Suarez / RvP / Sturridge

I have 3,4 ITB, and don't know where to spend it. Upgrading Ki to someone like eriksen is possible, but having Lallana, Mirallas and Eriksen in my side doesn't seem like a good idea (2out of 3 the most).

I might punt on a Michu when he comes back (if I replace Ki, I can get an 8.5 mid).

Am I too light on my midfield? Especially with no chelsea cover?

I don't get the Silva love here atm, I know he has the potential and history to score, but zero current form. Which for me makes him expensive.

Yeah, basicly I like him a lot less without Aguero in the side, less assist potential, he seems to have better linkup with him then any other city strikers.

    Looking to run with this team for the weekend, not sure if I should bench Kolorov or not;

    Mannone
    Ward, Shaw, Azpi
    Eriksen, Hazard, Mata, Gerrard
    RVP, Studge, Suarez

    Szcz, Kolarov, Gnabry, Whittaker

The whole team plays at home this weekend which is a bit of a welcome accident.

It's a shame that you've taken too many hits. I'd leave this week and then use your 2 FTs if you want to swap out Baines for Azp but IMO leave as is as Swansea and have some nice fixtures coming up and so do Everton and I can see Baines scoring well.

I've already made the moves, too impatient as you can probably tell by the hits. I wanted to get studge in before his value rose too much.

The hope is always that the boys I've bought in will 4 more points between them than the ones I've shipped out - doesn't always work out that way though 🙁

    a) Boruc vs HUL
    b) Mannone vs STK

    1) Coleman vs tot
    2) Mertesacker vs liv
    3) Gabbidon vs WBA
    4) Bardsley vs HUL

Need one GK and 3 Defenders for this GW.

    Currently on:

    Boruc, Coleman, Gabbidon & Bardsley.

Thinking not worth doubling up on Sunderland with Mannone when Boruc plays Stoke at home.

    Right to bench Mertesacker?

The appeal of Coleman is limited to his attacking potential IMO.

Will he continue to perform the same till end of season, or is it worth more to get in an Arsenal and Chelsea defender till end of season?

Good differential, can be explosive but is usually the first one off when Jose's starts subbing.

    Mannone
    Azpi-EVANS-Ward
    Hazard-Lallana-Mata-Silva
    Sturridge-Suarez-JRod
    Sub:Marshall, Mirallas, Coleman, Koscielny

One free transfer and 1m in the bank so I thought:

Evans->Kolarov, Zabaleta, Cahill or Ivanovic. Which one?

I am having a crisis of confidence and am not sure which way to go.

    My Current team is -

    Mannone (Harper)
    Ivanovic, Merte, Kompany (Ward, Coleman)
    Haz, Silva, Lallana, Eriksen (Gnabry)
    Studge, Suarez, JRod)

I had planned week by week:
    Harper -> Adrian
    Ivanovic -> Reid
    Kompany -> Terry
    Gnabry -> Mutch

Doing this will allow me the funds to do a straight Swap of Studge -> Aguero when/if he is healthy
Giving me a team of -

    Mannone (Adrian)
    Coleman, Merte, Terry (Ward, Reid)
    Haz, Silva, Lallana, Eriksen (Mutch)
    Studge/Aguero, Suarez, JRod

The only thing that will throw a spanner into my plan is that after watching the CHE/MCI game I realise how much more control over the game YaYa has over Silva. But if I swap Silva for Yaya I am the short on funds to bring Aguero back in.

I would appreciate any comments or suggestions about either my proposed changes or any ideas you may have about my team going forward.

    Many thanks

You could save a transfer by not swapping ivan for terry for a start...

Seems to complicated, if you try to plan too far ahead you will get stung by an injury or be unable to get a form player in.

Concentrate on the next few games and worry about Aguero after city's blank gamweek

Would you transfer out either of Chambers or Bruce for a Chelsea defender?

(Currently starting Chambers, with Bruce first on bench).

    Mannone, Boruc,
    Coleman, Koscielny, Kolarov, Shaw, Chester!
    Hazard, Navas, Gnabry, Mirallas, Ki,
    Adebayor, Suarez, Giroud.

    5.9m in account, (Gnabry- 10.1m)
    1ft.

Better to do a switch now for Gnabry or just bench him and hold out for a double switch the week after..?
    Please advise..
