Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 31 – Tuesday

Edin Dzeko is at the double and Yaya Toure nets again as City hammer United at Old Trafford. Romelu Lukaku serves up a goal and assist and Ross Barkley scores for the second successive match as Everton ease past Newcastle, whilst Wilfried Bony also takes his tally to two strikes over the double Gameweek in Swansea’s draw at Arsenal:

Dzeko’s Derby Double Sees City Cruise to Victory
Edin Dzeko took his tally to seven goals and two assists in his last nine starts as Manchester City swept aside troubled neighbours United. Almost 100,000 managers opted for the Bosnian ahead of the double Gameweek, but were immediately disappointed at the weekend when his name was missing from the teamsheet. Having recovered from illness, Dzeko was chosen to lead City’s attack last night as Manuel Pellegrini continued with a 4-2-3-1, and repaid his owners’ faith with a brace and maximum bonus points. Even with Sergio Aguero due to make his latest comeback from injury towards the end of the week, Dzeko’s recent displays have surely cemented his place in the starting line-up for the near future, adding yet more reason to be tempted by his modest 6.8 price-tag ahead of another double in a few weeks’ time.

Yaya Delivers, Silva Disappoints and Nasri Stakes a Claim
Moved to the role in “the hole” last night, David Silva turned in yet another silky display for the visitors. In spite of his impressive showing, the Spaniard failed to produce an end product and finished the double Gameweek with a single assist to his name – whilst Yaya Toure once again ran riot with a massive 31-point haul over the pair of fixtures, Samir Nasri’s trio of assists earned the Frenchman 15 points and suggests that, with a 3% ownership and price of just 8.1, he could be worthy of consideration as a midfield double-up with Toure as City prepare for two more doubles over the run-in.

Another Shut Out for City
A fifth clean sheet in a row for City sums up their value across the board right now. Aleksandar Kolarov and Gael Clichy continue to be alternated at left back, but Vincent Kompany, Martin Demichelis and Pablo Zabaleta are nailed on and will surely harbour the attention of many in the coming days. Potential suitors be warned, however – City face Arsenal, Southampton and Liverpool in their next three, a run of fixtures which will likely determine their title ambitions and the essential status of their rearguard. The trip to Anfield is supplemented by a home clash with Sunderland in the same Gameweek, though, and with West Brom, Villa and West Ham also still to visit the Etihad, further defensive returns look more than likely.

Retained Lukaku and Barkley Spur Toffees
In a night that saw Roberto Martinez’s penchant for rotation irk Kevin Mirallas owners, it was Romelu Lukaku and Ross Barkley who stole the show in Everton’s 3-0 stroll at Newcastle. Retained from Saturday’s starting line-up, Lukaku and Barkley grabbed a goal apiece, which the former supplemented with an assist and maximum bonus points. An 18-point haul across the double Gameweek, as well as a clear immunity to Martinez’s teamsheet tinkering, justifies Lukaku’s lofty spot in our Watchlist right now, with the Belgian sure to see plenty of investment in the coming weeks prior to Everton’s next double.

However, it was Barkley who topped the Toffees’ scoring ranks for the Gameweek, suggesting that the 5.1-priced midfielder could yet re-emerge as a genuine budget option for the latter stages of the campaign. The threat of rotation still hangs over Everton’s attacking midfielders, though. Martinez has now replaced two of those slots in each of the last two league games and given that Barkley was the only player to start both matches behind the lone striker, there’d be no real surprise if Martinez freshened things up once again for the weekend trip to Fulham.

Strikers on Top at Emirates
With Arsenal missing Laurent Koscielny and coming into the game on the back of last Saturday’s mauling at the hands of Chelsea, and Swansea without a clean sheet in their last six, it looked like it might be a night for the attackers in north London. And so it proved. Swansea’s Wilfred Bony put the visitors ahead with his second strike of the double Gameweek before Arsenal duo Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski found the net for the Gunners in the 2-2 draw. Bony’s 14-point Gameweek return will naturally have satisfied his 5.1% ownership and with eight goals in 12 appearances since the turn of the year, the Ivorian, at 7.1, looks a valid in-form option for our third forward slot, with games against Norwich, Hull and Newcastle in the next four.

Gunners’ Resilience Slipping
Meanwhile, Arsenal’s defensive meltdown has come as something of a shock to us all. So often a reliable source of points this season, the Gunners’ two main back-line assets – Koscielny and Per Mertesacker – managed just one point between them over the double Gameweek, prompting many to contemplate parting company with the Gunners’ rearguard. Those pondering this option should note that the north London outfit have Manchester City and Everton in their next two, before the fixtures take a significant turn for the better for the remainder of the season. With West Ham, Newcastle and West Brom still to visit the Emirates and trips to Hull and Norwich also left to play, Arsene Wenger’s side could still have a major say in our Fantasy seasons over the run-in as they look to clinch that fourth place finish.

    Memo for Moyes:

    - Drop Evra for the rest of the season, give Buttner a run in the team and the chance to show he is worthy of keeping.

    - Never play Tom Cleverley again, he is NOT good enough, end of story. You may as well play a youngster or two and take a look at them.

    - Mata needs to play centrally, but he needs players around him who can 'plug into' his playmaking. The lieks of Valencia and Young etc.. run away from him when he gets the ball instead of coming short for triangles and quicker moves.

    - Rooney should never play in central midfield, especially when 2-0 down and needing a goal.

    - Welbeck should be instructed never to shoot unless he is within 10 yards of goal, any further away than that and the shot will 100% be scuffed and pea roll wide or to the keeper.

    - If Rio was a horse he would be retired to stud immediately (or sold for glue).

    - Sign De Gea up to a long term contract ASAP.

    - Offer Phil Jones some basic advice on 'positioning'. He's got the raw materials, but he needs them moulded.

    - Play Fellaini as the anchor man, or not at all.

    Peace out!

The doubles make them look good, but not for me. No sustained form from any of them and tough fixtures.
Mannone/Speroni rotate well, but who wants to use transfers or hits for keepers at this stage?

Absolutely - I think we should try Mata & Kagawa centrally in front of an anchor man, like a 4-1-4-1 formation or Xmas tree of sorts:

        D - D - D - D

A 4-1-4-1 would be utterly annihilated with Fellaini as the only defensive minded attacker. Your midfield is bad enough with two players there, let alone only one.

It would be a 5 man midfield without the ball, and pressing high would be a requirement in a formation like this.

Only in theory. It's basically a 4-3-3 with Kagawa and Mata as part of the midfield 3, and they're useless defensively.

Disagree, United have the players there to keep possession and control games, like Barcelona do, do you think Xavi and Fabregas are much more defensively competent than Kagawa and Mata?

                  Fellaini could be United's Busquets.

Its worth a go, whatever they're doing now clearly isn't working.

Fair enough, I think it's worth a go and they could form a partnership that would allow them to keep the ball more and defend less, and Kagawa's not as useless as you think, I've seen him track back when playing on the wings so if he was CM he might have to work at it and harry the opposition's midfielders.

Or do you just want to continue seeing United fail being a Pool supporter? 😉

Same difference really, essentially the midfield becomes 5 men without the ball.

Either way, he needs to try something to incorporate players into positions that suit them.

Nothing left in the league this season, perfect chance to try out a few things.

Phil Jones would do great alongside somebody who actually commanded the defense well. Rio has been absolutely the opposite in his games. Vidic is getting on and I question his form and motivation this season big time... the others are too young.

problem is they don't have any identity. moyes wants to play 2 strikers in a 4-4-2 but we don't have any decent out-and-out wingers. then he signs mata, a no 10 type player, but you can't play rooney mata and RVP together (unless you go 3 at the back in a 3-4-1-2, which is risky) because of the type of the players they are. only solution imo is to cash in on RVP and build a team around rooney as a no 9 and mata as a no 10 like this:
      carrick fellaini
      *** mata ***
      rooney
[*** is welbeck, kagawa, januzaj, and (next season) zaha]
This would leave them very narrow but this problem could be overcome by signing a decent young left back who likes to attack and encourage him and rafael to bomb forward and support, allowing *** to drift inside with fluidity. with fellaini and carsick in the double pivot position in front of the back four, that would be a very stable and well balanced side.

A with Mannone, surely a decent option? Great fixture this GW and DGWs galore coming up. Or, who is your backup GK?

D sounds great on paper, but it puts you in an awkward position if Aguero starts banging in braces.

Azp is the #1 defender under 6M IMO. If you already have him, I think Demi is a good option IF you only have 1 City player. If you have 2 already, that could give you problems when Aguero returns.

    Current team:

    RUDDY (DAVIS)

    ZAB - COLMAN - EVRA - (COLLINS - WARD)

    YAYA - NOLAN - HAZARD - LALLANA - (BACUNA)

    STURRIDGE - SUAREZ - LUKAKU

    What is a better move??

    A) Ruddy + Evra > Cech + Kolarov
    B) Sturridge + Evra > Aguero + Bardsley
    C) Save

In my opinion it might not be the best idea to assume and look for the "suprise star".

Look for the solid picks like, Coleman, Baines, Lukaku, Yaya, Silva, Nasri, etc and youll do better.

There is sooo much speculation and punts around on this forum. Just because some guy gets it right 1 out of 10 times and post it here, doesnt make him/her a good manager.

What do you guys think to these defensive transfers for rest of season:

Current defenders are: Cheste, Williamson, Coleman, Azpi, Evra

-After GW 32, ditch Evra for Cahill to double up on CHE defence (who have STO, swa, SUN)
-Ditch Coleman after DGW 34 for Zaba (who has WBM, CPA, eve, AVL, WHM)
-Take Cahill out for Evra in time for DGW 37 (United have (SUN and HUL)

Presently have Baines, Lukaku, Silva, Ward, and Puncheon for DGW34.

Plan to add 2-3 more players, preferably 2 more from City or one from Everton.

Which options are best out of this?

    1) Everton
    a) Distin (means double up EVE defence)
    b) Mirallas or Barkley (rotation ?)
    c) enough EVE coverage

    2) City
    a) Kun + Demichelis (assuming Kun will be fit in 17 days time)
    b) Yaya + Demichelis
    c) cheaper alternative to Kun/Yaya such as Nasri + Zaba

As the fantasy season reaches its' denouement the forward options suddenly look to have a lot more variety, Saurez a stick on but Sturridge Rooney Lukaku Bony Dzeko all good picks, even Eto'o.

Given how well YaYa done and Aguero's prohibitive price he has to be way down the list doesn't he? Really want him but Dzeko at half the price is just too good value?

problem is Aguero wont be deemed fully fit for a couple of gameweeks, Saurez nailed on in our lineups and will take real guts not to have Rooney for 3 tasty home games in 2 weeks. Having Aguero as well could well be a logistical nightmare

Trying to work out how to do Sturridge > Aguero either by 33 or 34.

Need to get 1.5 back and don't want to touch most of my team

Sissoko needs to fund part of it probably for Barkley.

Would you then consider losing Johnson or get another cheap option in for Sterling?

Nasri could be a good shout. I haven't got the £ to upgrade Nolan so I have to look for someone in that price bracket.

New looks terrible upfront. I'd say Boruc.
I'll start mannone, but I don't have boruc.

I'd go Boruc despite the last performance.

Currently have Silva and Yaya from city.
Is anyone else worth owning for the next double? Is Silva worth keeping?
    Lallana is tempting me.
