World Cup 2014 – Fox Sports Rule Guide

Having rolled out a series of articles on the FantasyiTeam game ahead of Brazil’s opener with Croatia, we now take a look at another Fantasy game which has caught the collective attention on site. The Australian-based Fox Sports game is starting to pick up in popularity due to the fact that its scoring system is very similar to the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game:

In the first of two articles on the Fox Sports game, we assess the rules and scoring system on offer:

Squad Selection and Transfers

Seasoned FPL managers know the score here. Initially handed a $3m budget, you select a 15-man squad which must consist of two goalkeepers, five defenders, five midfielders and three forwards. For the group stages, you can pick no more than three players per country but this limit jumps to six players for each of the four knockout rounds.

Each participant must select XI players for their starting line-up – a legitimate team must have one goalkeeper, at least three defenders and at least one forward; essentially the same formations that are available in FPL. If any of your starting players fail to feature in their respective match, they are replaced by your bench options, so getting your subs in the correct order is key.

You are allowed two free transfers per round for the group stages – three points are deducted for each and every trade that exceeds this limit. Prior to the knockout rounds commencing, you are given unlimited transfers to restructure your squad for the final four rounds – once the knockouts are underway, you are given three free transfers per round, though Fantasy managers are also handed a wildcard to wield at any point in the tournament.

Your transfers must be confirmed 15 minutes prior to each Fantasy Round deadline, giving Fantasy managers enough time to assess the team line-ups before making any alterations.

Furthermore, it also must be noted that, unlike other Fantasy games, there is no double Gameweek 1 for Brazil or Mexico, whilst Russia’s match with South Korea (which takes place on Tuesday June 17 at 11pm) will count as a fixture for Fantasy Round 1, despite the match commencing after the deadline date and time for Fantasy Round 2. Listed below are the deadline dates and times for all rounds:

Deadlines
Group Stage 1 – Thursday June 12, 8.45pm
Group Stage 2 – Tuesday June 17, 7.45pm
Group Stage 3 – Monday June 23, 4.45pm
Round of 16 – Saturday June 28, 4.45pm
Quarter Finals – Friday July 4, 4.45pm
Semi-Finals – Tuesday July 8, 8.45pm
Third Place & Final – Saturday July 12, 8.45pm

It’s also worth noting that there are no player price fluctuations in the Fox Sports game, meaning it perhaps pays off to hold fire on our transfer plans until line-ups are announced. Unlike FPL, there’s no need to quickly jump on/off bandwagons due to rapidly escalating or diminishing price tags.

Scoring Points

A full list of the rules can be accessed here, though it’s fair to say that if you’re familiar with FPL, you’ve pretty much got the Fox Sports scoring system sussed. For example, keepers and defenders pick up six points for a clean sheet and more than 60 minutes on the pitch, midfielders receive five points for scoring a goal, while forwards pick up just four. Assists are worth three points regardless of classification, whilst keepers also earn a single point for every three saves.

Looking at the rule sets of both games, it seems there are only three differences. Players are not deducted any points for own goals in the Fox game, whilst bonus points are awarded by the man in the stands. This is a throwback to the system which was disposed of after the 2011/12 Premier League campaign and allows Fox Sports to determine, at its discretion, the three most impressive performers in the match – First Best on Ground gets three points, Second Best on Ground is handed two points, while Third Best on Ground receives a single point.

Assists are also determined in a slightly different manner. In order to clarify the Fox definition, we’ve pasted in the following directly from their website to avoid any confusion:

Assists

“Fantasy points for an assist are awarded to the World Cup player from the scoring team who makes the last pass to the goal scorer from that World Cup team before a goal is scored. If an World Cup player from the goal scoring team attempts to pass the ball to another player from that World Cup team, and during that pass a defending player touches and alters the path of the ball, no Fantasy points for an assist will be awarded to the player passing the ball if a goal is score, unless that defender’s touch results in an own goal.

If a goalkeeper does not have control of the ball and parries a shot or drops a cross, or the ball rebounds off the woodwork, the attacking World Cup player shooting or crossing the ball will be awarded Fantasy points for an assist if a goal directly ensues.

If an World Cup player is awarded a penalty or free kick and that player does not take the penalty or free kick themselves, the player who was awarded the penalty kick or free kick they will be awarded Fantasy points for an assist if a goal is directly scored from the penalty kick or free kick”.

Scout League

Finally, a heads-up that we’ve set up an official Scout league for those looking to get involved. The league name is Fantasy Football Scout and the code to join is 1096-822.

Please also be aware that, as mentioned on the official site, whilst any person is permitted to participate in the Fox Sports game, only permanent residents of Australia are eligible for any official prizes.

Yeah, but I've just had 9 months of the exact same thing, then another 9 months straight afterwards. Give me something different any day.

It's not 'different' rules I have a problem with - it's the ambiguous, lucky dip nature of the scoring/sub system in McDonald's that makes it a complete shambles. If the rules were properly written I'd enjoy it all so much more.

Perhaps it's my research into the 2010 WC, but I think I have a grasp on the rules. Just a pity they were written by a 5-year-old.

So do you think it's manual subs or not? And if so are they after every game has kicked off like FiT or after each day like UFPL? (Or something different?)

I think it has manual subs. I think this statement in the rules has a typo...

"You can change every player in your line-up that has (not) already played during the current round for any other relevant player in your squad that hasn’t already played."

Why would someone write has not then hasn't in the same sentence?

Then there's the 23 players and what's written on the 'my team' page. Everything indicates it's like UFPL.

What's annoying me is the fact they changed the position allocation so now we have to have 8 mids (imo the worst position in the game)

My initial pass at making a team supports your view - my midfield has a lot of filler/players I expect little from. I haven't given it tremendous consideration yet though so perhaps my tactics are wrong.

I meant from a purely point-scoring potential, rather than the players themselves. No advantage for goals over strikers, less chances of assists, less chance of blocks/RBs compared to defs, no saves and only 1 point for a CS. The only thing that is tailored for them is the delivering balls into the box points.

Yep, that's why I've focused my budget more on my defence and attack, although I'd need to change some players round if we can get confirmation one way or another over the subs thing.

Who to score most of these two pairs in the FIRST ROUND?
(Take into account that in the game i'm playing there are no baps or recovered ball points awarded)

*In the game, Brazil are playing two games in the first round, vs Croatia and Mexico:)
Already have Cesar and Neymar, so don't say Fred and Oscar..

    Morning everyone,

Now that the official game is finally open, I'd like to provide you the opportunity of applying for a place in the Ghanian team. We still have two slots available, and I will be considering your applications on behalf of our captain,Nate, who is a site regular but unfortunately a bit busy in his work these days. Our other team member is Sean, who was a captain in the Beach WC,finished in the top 60 in UFPL game this season and was also among the top 200 in the UCL league.

If you want to be part of this amazing team, feel free to drop by an application to bigmanbakar@gmail.com which shall include the following:

    * Your FFS User ID
    * Your FPL User ID
    * A short summary mentioning your FPL credentials, why you want to join etc

Keep in mind however, that we give more weightage to your commitment rather than your FPL rank!

    Thanks

What may help to solve this contradiction in substituting players in the McDonalds game is that both the 2010 World Cup and the Euros 2012 had the format where any players who start and score low can be substituted out. Also the pitch format and screen were more than likely developed after the rules were written. So they should be the most up to date.

Thats true haha. But yeah it should work out like the way it has done in previous years. No need to suddenly change them. Everything else seems the same so cant see why that rule would change despite a very poorly written description of the rules.

I think the 23 man squad is a good idea IF the competition is long enough for them to all come into play.

This is a joke because the cheap players won't get used for the first three rounds and then they'll be on the beach for the rest of the tournament.

    ECUADOR PRESS CONFERENCE

The Ecuador National Football team is extremely saddened by the news that our finest player Jonty has resigned from International games. The extremely rough conditions imposed by the organisers McD seems to have made him very uncomfortable. We wish him good luck in his endeavours.

Applications are invited for the final spot in team Ecuador.

    @Zep and all other Captains

Is the tournament sticking with Maccie D's or switching to Fox...?

Given the ambiguous rules of the former (and site glitches allowing 3+ players) wouldn't it be better to switch now..?

Personally, not having to swap players out each day would work better for me with the Aussie time difference. 😉

    Lost on last post.

So you can only substitute a player in who hasn't already played in the round?

Essentially if you're sure all of your starting 11 are going to play, you may as well just pick a strong starting 11 and get the others cheap no?

    Also:

You can replace as many players as you like as long as all squad conditions are met and you have the required money.

So this makes this even more relevant?

Tell me if I've not quite grasped something here? haha

Hola JB! (replied on the dead thread)

      key points to consider;

      1) There are NO TRANSFERS for the first three rounds.
      2) There is a WC for each subsequent round
      3) you can make substitutions, although this is a topic nobody can clarify.

Because of the likelihood of injuries, suspensions and rest, you'll want a decent three or four players to supplement your first 11, but in general do as you suggest and buy starting cheapies from Algeria, Iran and Honduras to make up the numbers and spend most of the budget on a core 12 or 13 players.

    🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄 🙄

I've only just finally got to the lineup page. Here are the errors I see:

    - No Opponents listed

    - Time to next game shown only for selected players, not bench, making it difficult to see who to play first (assuming active management subs)

    - No confirm button. Not necessary in principle but it should be consistent with the transfers page

I am very close to following Jonty out of the game. I dislike this game quite intensely, from the rules to the paucity of the design.

Maybe I should have a nap and come back later 😉

Only if they're foolish enough to follow my example 😉

Seriously though, there are so many games to choose from and many people are looking for advice. Why shouldn't we give our honest appraisal? What is our responsibility to McD's? McD's loss would be Fox's gain.

Would you say the same about a film review site? Should a reviewer never say they don't like a film, for fear of people not going?

It's the act of pulling out that I'm referring to and being a Scout, there is an element of kudos when you make public annoucements that you are giving up. I'm not into quitters. Once you are in, you are in.

I play Fantasy Football for fun, not for some kind of sense of stoic achievement 🙂 I'm concerned that the design problems with this game will limit the amount of fun I will have.

But re-read what I said - I haven't said I'm out yet 🙂 And I probably will stick it out because I made a commitment to the FFS UEFA game, which is a responsibility.

Cesar's played less than 12 hours of Football in 11 months, would prefer Lloris.

I really don't see any contradiction in the substitutions policy of the McD's game; how I see it:

They are keen to stress the point that once you pick your lineup they are auto saved on there. It's not like FPL where you can chop and change the lineup before clicking the confirm button, once you've put them in their position it autosaves them there, without a need to click confirm.

However, that doesn't mean the player can't be taken out of that position. It's not that they are locked to that position once you put them there, simply that it autosaves without a need to confirm.

Therefore, if a player is yet to play, you can still swap them around up until the moment they play. But the most important aspect of this rule is that they want you to be aware to be careful when swapping players out who have already played. If you accidentally swap Neymar for Dzeko after the Brazil game, you'll lose his points and won't be able to undo.

I see the rule as a warning that their game does not have a confirm button, instead moving a player into a position will autosave them there and can't be undone.

Blimey, hadn't thought about the consequences of the lack of a 'Confirm Changes' button - one wrong click and your captain is a goner!

Yeah it'll catch a lot of people out who are used to FPL I'd imagine.

I do expect a pop-up warning when swithcing out a player with points, though.

      Yes but they say
"You can change every player in your line-up that has not already played during the current round for any other relevant player in your squad that hasn’t already played."
So that means you can't change Dzko for neymar cause Neymar alreday played.

      And ho to explain this:

"Once a match has started, all involved players are locked and unavailable for the rest of the Round." -- so you can't change your player, and line below that

You can remove players from Your Pitch during the Round, but you will lose any points they have scored in the round. -- and now you can

I think someone said that 'match' means 'match' not 'matchday'.

"Once a match has started, all involved players are locked and unavailable for the rest of the Round."

        Match, not matchday.

Does that clear it up? It cleared it up a little for me.

        Then...

We can assume they have made a mistake with the 'HAS NOT already played' and it should be HAS.
