World Cup 2014 – Dugout Discussion – Matchday One, Day Four

With three World Cup matches on offer this evening, Fantasy managers have plenty to look forward to. First up, Switzerland take on Ecuador in the 5pm kick-off, with Ottmar Hitzfeld’s side looking to maintain the form that saw them top their qualifying group with an unbeaten record over 10 matches:

Switzerland: Benaglio: Lichtsteiner, Von Bergen, Djourou, Rodriguez: Inler, Behrami; Shaqiri, Xhaka, Stocker; Drmic

Ecuador: Dominguez; Paredes, Guagua, Erazo, W Ayovi; A Valencia, Noboa, Gruezo, Montero; Caicedo, E Valencia

For Switzerland, the highly-rated young left-back Ricardo Rodriguez will add plenty of attacking threat from the back, whilst the likes of Granit Xhaka and Xherdan Shaqiri are tasked with supplying the creativity behind Josip Drmic, who notched 17 times in 30 starts for German side Nurnberg in 2013/14. The one surprisde from Hitzfeld’s line-up is his decision to opt for Johan Djourou ahead of Fabian Schar in central defence.

Ecuador will be looking for front two Enner Valencia and Felipe Caicedo to grab the goals. The latter was top scorer in qualifying with seven strikes, whilst elsewhere in Reinaldo Rueda’s 4-4-2, Jefferson Montero and United’s Antonio Valencia will also be hoping to make an impact on the flanks.

After that, France square up to Honduras in the other Group E game at 9pm. Despite losing Franck Ribery to injury, Les Bleus are highly-fancied in this one – they’ve won four and drawn one of their last five friendlies, conceding just a single goal in the process. Karim Benzema, Olivier Giroud, Paul Pogba, Antoine Griezmann and Mathieu Valbuena owners have every reason for optimism as Didier Deschamps’ side look to get off to a winning start before a midweek meet with the Swiss.

Our late night viewing sees Group F get underway with a clash of the favourites, as Argentina and Bosnia and Herzegovina go head-to-head. Lionel Messi will surely be sporting the armband for a number of managers for the 11pm kick-off, though there’s no shortage of options on our radars for this clash, with Sergio Aguero, Gonzalo Higuain, Angel Di Maria, Edin Dzeko and Miralem Pjanic all looking to catch our attentions before the schedule eases considerably for both sides.

I suppose that Cholevas to Coentrao is a no brainer since he gets forward a lot and supplies lots of crosses into the penalty area, or should I stick with Cholevas (McShite game).
I always have an Iranian to sub on for him later if he fails to perform.
And does anyone know whether Beikzadeh is a likely starter?

-Open up MD2 by lunchtime. (Unless it remembers who your first captain was from MD1, which isn't perfect, but better than nothing)

  Could one of the Mods make it into a hot topic so that the guy that originally answered it doesn't have to do so every day?
  Basically the furthest right (as viewed) player in the reduced position (Def/Mid/Fwd) will be subbed off if you change your formation.

A foolproof guide going forward for people who might want to make formation changes is to set your team up in order with the players playing earliest on the left through to players playing last on the right hand side.

  Not foolproof, but as good as you're gonna get. This game is designed so that you make changes match-by-match. So if one of your players in the first game fails then you sub him out and move the next person to where he was so your bankers build from left to right.

  Wait until you know that Mbolhi will start, because he's not nailed on.
  Rojo at 7 points is borderline. Kombarov may score more but may not.
  I'm getting rid of Di Maria as soon as I know that KDB will start, which he should.
  Bentaleb is nailed but know nothing about Rahmani so can't help there. 🙁

  1) Check team list of Germany vs Portugal before making any of the following changes.
  replace di Maria with Kroos, so that Kroos remains on left (in case Kroos scores and you need to change formation)
  
  2) Check team list of Belgium vs Algeria before making any of the following changes.
  Replace Kroos / Valbuena (whoever has less points) with KdB
  Put Bentaleb on your 4th mid spot
  Cillessen > Mbolhi
  
  3) If Bentaleb does not deliver, move to 4-3-3 [which would automatically remove Bentaleb now] and play Kombarov (check team list before changes)

    Yours is great advice and will probably follow it. Just need a bit of clarity on that front.

      No you can't. only way people change positions from being last in the right hand side is if you change from 3 at the back to 4 for example your player will still stay in the same position but obviously 4th right becomes last instead of 3rd right

      That depends on whether they have played already and how far to the right they are on your pitch view.
      But Cill to Mbolhi is a no brainer if the latter starts.

McDonalds game. How does this look for a strategy?

Rojo (7pts) --> Hosseini (IRN) - - -> Kombarov (RUS)

Valbuena (6pts) --> Bedoya (USA) - - -> Kevin De Bruyne (BEL)

Dzeko (3pts) --> Lukaku (BEL)

I'll be losing a total of 16 points for 3 players which looks rather weak while my bench looks strong. Sounds good right?

89 in the McD´s (this is minus 16 or whatever) I was stupid to think I could take Vidal out and not take Cuadrados points out of my line-up, someone tell me how many points JC got in McD´s game, they won´t even let you see anything...Learned my lesson

I'd just like to confirm that when you change formation to a lower amount of midfielders the far right player goes to your bench, I just switched from 3-4-3 to 4-3-3 and Valbuena automatically went to my bench and there was a free spot in defence for me to choose.

A guide to changing formation

I want to change formation what will happen

YOU WILL AUTOMATICALLY LOSE THE PLAYER ON THE LAST POSITION ON THE RIGHT

Players are automatically locked in positions that have already played

Whenever a new player is added to a position when changing formation this player is always added to the last position on the right

What can I do going forward to help me

Always set your team up so that your earlier players (eg Brazil) are in the positions on the left hand side of the starting 11 working across in date order of games played

  Take out any players remaining left to play (just do it all at once) so the positions are empty then rearrange them left to right earliest playing player first. Be careful not to click on players already played

        This doesn't solve all scenarios. Suppose all strikers have played, and you have Van Persie on the left on 3 points, and Giroud on the right on 14 points, and you want to bring in Oezil for Germany's game. There's no way you can change to 3-5-2 without losing Giroud's 14 points.
