World Cup 2014 – Scout Notes – Matchday 3, Day 2

Diego Godin heads Uruguay into the knockout stages in a narrow win over 10-man Italy. A late penalty from Georgios Samaras helps Greece get the better of Ivory Coast, Jackson Martinez scores twice as a much-changed Colombia hammer Japan, while Costa Rica clinch top spot in Group D after a goalless draw against England:

Costa Ricans At the Summit
Jorge Luis Pinto made a couple of changes for yesterday’s clash with England. Continuing with a 5-4-1 formation, the Costa Rica boss drafted in Roy Miller for Michael Umana at the back and replaced Christian Bolanos with Randall Brenes on the left of midfield – knowing that a draw would see them top the group, Pinto’s side contained their opponents comfortably on their way to a second consecutive clean sheet. Bearing in mind they conceded a single goal over the group stages, the Costa Rican defence may well persuade some to invest ahead of a very winnable match against Greece in the first round of the knockouts.

England Bow Out with a Point
With their exit already confirmed, Roy Hodgson named a much-changed XI from the side that lost to Uruguay. Only Gary Cahill and Daniel Sturridge kept their places in the starting line-up but despite already-qualified Costa Rica offering little in the way of attacking intentions, England were simply unable to make the breakthrough in another poor display – Hodgson’s side had 56% possession yet managed a single effort on target in their final match of Brazil 2014.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Frank Lampard led the way for recovered balls for England, with nine to his name, while Jack Wilshere (seven), Phil Jones (six), Luke Shaw and Gary Cahill (five apiece) were next in line. For Costa Rica, six players managed five or more – Giancarlo Gonzalez was top with nine, Oscar Duarte and Celso Borges produced six apiece, while Cristian Gamboa, Roy Miller and Yeltsin Tejeda all registered five.

Godin Nods Uruguay Through
A late winner from the Atletico Madrid centre-half was enough to steer the South Americans into the last 16 at Italy’s expense yesterday evening. Uruguay were unchanged from the side that saw off England in Matchday 2 and went into the match knowing they had to win to progress – firing 14 attempts on goal, with five on target, they certainly offered more going forward than the Italians, though their task was made somewhat easier when Claudio Marchisio was dismissed just before the hour mark. Godin’s header – from a Gaston Ramirez corner – clinched second spot in Group D for Oscar Tabarez’ side, who are now set to face Colombia in the last 16, though they may well be without Luis Suarez after the Liverpool forward was involved in another biting controversy. If the ref confirms he missed the incident, FIFA could well be set to dish out a severe retrospective punishment, which would considerably lessen their prospects of progressing and subsequent Fantasy appeal.

Italy Stumble Out
Cesare Prandelli shifted from 4-3-3 to a 3-5-2 formation in the knowledge that a draw would be enough to take them through. The Italy boss made four changes for the 5pm kick-off, drafting in Mattia De Sciglio, Leonardo Bonucci, Marco Verratti and Ciro Immobile, with the latter partnering Mario Balotelli up top but the alterations made little impact as his side turned in a thoroughly lacklustre performance. Italy managed just one shot on target all match – from a total of only five attempts – and failed to score for the second successive group game; with a single goal to their name and no shut-outs over the three fixtures, Prandelli’s side have massively underperformed as Fantasy assets and got their just rewards as Godin’s effort ensured they’ll be taking an early plane home.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Giorgio Chiellini registered 10 recovered balls for the Italians. Andrea Barzagli was next in line with nine, whilst fellow centre-half Leonardo Bonucci and playmaker Andrea Pirlo managed six, with Marco Verratti just behind on five. Godin was Uruguay’s main man with 10, with Egidio Arevalo Rios, Jose Maria Gimenez and Alvaro Gonzalez (all six) and Martin Caceres (five) also impressing.

Colombia Cruise Past Japan
With his side already through, Jose Pekerman made eight changes for last night’s clash against Japan. Keeper David Ospina, left-back Pablo Armero and wide man Juan Cuadrado retained their places and the latter once again justified our Fantasy faith by netting a spot-kick opener in a 4-1 demolition. Fellow Fantasy favourite James Rodriguez climbed off the bench at half-time to continue his exceptional form by netting for the third match in a row, with the Monaco man also providing a pair of assists in a dazzling 45-minute display. Jackson Martinez’ brace perhaps gives Pekerman food for thought ahead of the weekend encounter against Uruguay, whilst a potential suspension for Suarez may well persuade more to invest in Pekerman’s in-form side ahead of the knockout stages.

Ozazaki Consolation Not Enough
Japan made two alterations for last night’s game, with Toshihiro Aoyama and Shinji Kagawa coming in for Hotaru Yamaguchi and Yuya Osako. In a dire end to their tournament, Keisuke Honda added to his goal in the opener against Ivory Coast by providing an assist for Shinji Ozazaki’s solitary strike, with the latter belatedly showing the form that saw him score 15 times in the Bundesliga last term.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Maya Yoshida’s 11 recovered balls were top for Japan, with Makoto Hasebe Atsuto Uchida next best on eight and five respectively. Carlos Valdes was Colombia’s top performer with nine, while Santiago Arias (seven), Fredy Guarin and Eder Balanta (six) and Alexander Mejia (five) also stood out.

Samaras the Hero as Greeks Sneak Through
A last-gasp spot-kick was enough to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 and send Fernando Santos’ side into the next round. The Greece manager made a trio of alterations to his starting XI, bringing in Giorgos Karagounis, Lazaros Christodoulopoulos and Dimtrios Salpingidis for Konstantinos Katsouranis, Kostas Mitroglou and Ioannis Fetfatzidis in a bid to boost his side’s prospects after they had failed to score in each of the first two matches. Ultimately, though, Greece benefitted from their opponents’ defensive frailties – Andreas Samaris slotting home after a Cheick Tiote error prior to Samaras’ 90th minute penalty. Up against Costa Rica in the knockouts, though, their defensive know-how may persuade one or two to take a punt – if both teams continue in the same vein, a low-scoring affair looks the likeliest outcome.

Gervinho in the Points Again as Ivorians Crash Out
In his first start of the tournament, Didier Drogba was unable to prevent his side from slipping to defeat. The former Chelsea man was one of three changes for the Ivorians, with Salomon Kalou and Kolo Toure also coming in for Wilfried Bony, Max Gradel and Didier Zakora, but Drogba failed to deliver when it mattered most. Instead, it was left to Bony to climb off the bench to net the Ivorians only goal, with Gervinho providing the assist – the latter earned attacking returns in all three of the group games, having found the net in the first two matches against Japan and Colombia.

In the FIFA McDonald’s game, Giannis Maniatis produced eight recovered balls, with Kostas Manolas and Vasilis Torisidis next best on five and four respectively. Ivory Coast made just 25 over the entire match – midfielder Serey Die and centre-half Sol Bamba were tied at the top with six apiece.

Greece through to the knock-outs in dramatic fashion. What a feeling, still buzzing! Fully deserved as well, Ivory Coast deserved nothing from that game and Greece so unlucky against Japan due to a silly (but fair) red card.

Been info filtering through for a couple of days that Rodriguez and Valbuena would be benched. I don't regret the decision as it looked for all the world like a chance to catch a jump on all those Rodriguez owners who didn't know. I was surprised it was only for 45 mins though...and more than a little peeved that he went on to do so much damage...I'd do the same again if I knew a player was going to be benched because it usually works the opposite way around. In fact almost always.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Where next for England?

With England players clearly falling short both technically and tactically in this World Cup does England have a credible future in international football?

Yesterday was a great example of how low England have sunk. The main talk was of the far more incident packed Uruguay and Italy game, while England played out a 0-0 draw against a more organised, more skilful side in Costa Rica. That's right - Costa Rica.

England have some players of quality in terms of Wilshire and Barkley but technically they can't hold a torch to the likes of Neymar with his deft touches and pirouettes against Cameroon or Columbia players such as Cuadrado. Watching the England game yesterday all their almost good passes and almost back heels were on display. Almost excellent players - but not quite.

This is the first World Cup I can remember with genuine lack of belief in the team. Oh well, England are out is the feeling rather than rage or indignation. I'm not sure Italian or Spanish fans would be as resigned to such failure.

Is the Premier League at fault? Do English Premier League fans and fantasy managers no longer care about their national side when the real action takes place from August to May across the UK.

The future looks bleak for English football and the saddest part of all is that barely anyone cares anymore.

Or am I being harsh. Will England emerge Phoenix like from this latest international embarrassment? If so, how will they manage it?

England truly are at a new low. 🙂

I remember watching Platt's goal in 1990, England's heroics after Beckham was sent off in 1998 and his redemptive penalty in 2002. All were the main talking points in England...now nothing. Such a sad demise.

The problem, as usual, is management.

1996 apart, we have consistently chosen no-hopers, and know-nothings to lead us. Hodgeson went wrong almost immediately with Rio Ferdinand, and continued on downhill from there.

There's a difference between technical players and Neymar type players. We're never gonna produce that sort of player, it's just not in our style of football or culture, but that doesn't matter the Germans don't neither do the Italians and they've been successful over the years recently.
Gerrard, Lampard, Scholes, Rooney, Gasgoicne when they were all at their peak, now Sterling and maybe Barkley are all very technically strong players

I think you're being harsh when you says nobody cares anymore, England and the World Cup is still bigger than the PL and CL for me and many others I know.

I honestly think so much of it is psychological. When you look at other players they improve their performances when they play for their country, our players seem to play so much worse than they do in the PL. The reason for that though I don't know.

We have technical players and always have. Our teamon paper is always one of the strongest, it's just they never seem to perform for England how they should.

Your right that 10 years ago it seemed like it was the end of the world but now no one seems to care. I questioned whether it just seemed this way as I myself was getting older. Possibly a knock on effect from the so called golden generation where we were happy with what we had and no thought was made for the future. Now that hopes gone it just feels empty.

I think what Glen Hoddle said the other night was pretty spot on.

You look at the majority of other teams who are doing well and they all have at least 2 players that would walk into the starting 11 of the current top 5 European sides

We just don't have that at the moment. The manager revolving door can keep turning but I don't think anyone is going to make an improvement on things at the moment. It has to come from club level up

On clubs, people say about too many foreigners killing off our development. I half agree, I think over the years the likes of Bergkamp, Zola, Henry etc have been a godsend. The problem is when clubs are buying in cheap "squad fillers" rather than giving their development players a chance. In my opinion, THIS is what is stifling the development of English players at the moment.

Completely agree. The other thing that concerns me is people (on here and elsewhere) banging on about the old players should be dropped and go with youth etc etc. I disagree, Venables showed the old mantle of "the best player will play" works best.

He brought Beardsley back at 33 years young

Ah, but Gerrard has been well past his best for two years, now, and gives the ball away at least twice in every match.

The other thing that concerns me is picking players like Smalling and Jones who in my opinion, are not there on merit or much else apart from who they play for.

I would have thought the likes of Davies, Caulker, Shawcross etc would be able to get a look in

As an outsider I have to say you have to rethink your football in International football, I think you´ve been stuck in the old system far too long. Then the choice of players wasn´t the best in some positions either because they´d have the domestic experience and not the international one or either because they simply had no experience at all, two similar CBs was never going to work and that midfield, although it has the talent lacks creativity.

I think that's a great point - they need to look more at England as a separate unit, develop a system and style and get players to work around that, rather than as a place where top English Premier League players are shoehorned into.

That could mean picking a defensive midfielder from a Championship side for example instead of Gerrard, who does a job and in this tournament not a good one. Other sides focus more on their team dynamic. There definitely needs to be an acknowledgement in the FA that England is now a lesser nation internationally and needs to set itself up better tactically to counter our technical deficiencies.

Not exactly, they played Gerrard the deepest with two defensive-minded midfielders ahead of him for most of the season.

Anyway, my point was that by picking Henderson, they picked a player who can complement Gerrard well.

I don't think the problem is a lack of defensive-minded midfielders though, rather a lack of dynamic midfielders.

I'm not sure we really played to the players strengths though. A 5-3-2 formation may have suited us with Johnson and Baines bombing up the wings and enough cover in defence to cover Johnson especially while 3 in midfield would have allowed us to play Barkley or Sterling more advanced with Sturridge and Rooney both up top.

I am basing this all on my years of Champ though so it might not have worked as well in practice.

you mention the fans/fantasy managers not caring but I wonder about the players aswell. just watch them sing the national anthem, they look so disinterested, no passion, then watch the rugdy team, the difference is startling, then go back & watch vids from the mid 90's when you had players like pearce, ince, southgate, wright & adams belting out the national anthem as if their lives depended on it... it speaks volumes for me.

If anyone is genuinely disappointed with England's early exit, then they are victims of unreasonable, inflated expectations. This includes me 🙁

The players simply aren't good enough at international football. They don't have the nouse and the coolness required. Look how many chances we missed and how many times we surrendered possession under pressure.

For us to realistically expect to challenge in future international tournaments, we need to change the way we develop young players, which involved changing the culture and changing the way our biggest clubs buy foreign players, which won't happen unless it is forced by the FA.

Well I imagine he got a big pay rise and may have thought he would get a shot, the problem is more the discrepancy between the two clubs finances that meant Everton couldn't turn down that sort of money.

In the final Swiss training session before tonight's game in Manaus, Ottmar Hitzfeld split his squad into an 'A' team and a 'B' team. In the previous two matches, this 'A' team has gone on to be the Nati's starting eleven.

So the Swiss team to face Honduras tonight looks like being:

Benaglio; Lichtsteiner, Schär, Djourou, Rodriguez; Behrami, Inler; Shaqiri, Xhaka, Mehmedi; Drmić

Interested it know what peoples tactics are for the knockout rounds when selecting players, are people going all in on certain teams eg backing the Dutch to beat Mexico and therefore picking maybe 4 from them, or selecting a few players from each team eg 2 Dutch 2 Mexicans.

The real story why Suarez bit Chiellini :

After the referee showed the red card to
Marchisio, Suarez felt bad for the Italians. He
felt injustice had been done to the Italians. So
he decided to balance out the game. He bit
Chiellini so that the referee would show him a
red and even the odds. That's why he even
tried to make it obvious by holding his mouth
after the incident. But the ref being a ref
overlooked it. And Suarez's attempt to be a
    gentleman was foiled.

Now everybody misunderstand him and he is
the villain. But please try to understand his
situation guys. He was trying to be a good
person but the ref ruined his plans.

It is because of people like you, that we also have referees like Marco Rodriguez! Marco Rodriguez may never referee World Cup matches ever, and Suarez to be ban for life. This would be sound justice to anyone who tries to deceive the global audience. Disgraced is FIFA for all the corruption and now making football no longer genuine. FIFA & World Cup 2014 has become WWE!
