The 9m Midfielders (Part 2)

In the first part, we looked at Steven Gerrard and David Silva. In this part, we’ll be looking at Juan Mata and Cesc Fabregas.

JUAN MATA

Mata had a solid showing in his half-season at Man United last term, overall scoring six and setting up seven. He scored 124 points, though that could have been more if he had more playing time under Jose Mourinho at Chelsea before his January transfer to Man United. He also had two great seasons before that, scoring a remarkable 212 points in 12/13, with 11 goals and 18 assists along the way, and 162 in 11/12, scoring six and getting 16 assists. He can definitely be relied on for assists, and he’s recently vowed to score more goals for United too. He’ll likely have a midfield partnership with new signing Ander Herrera, and that has proven to be solid over pre-season.

PROS

  1. Remarkably Consistent
  2. Gets a lot of assists
  3. Promised more goals, has potential to deliver

CONS

  1. He and Herrera may not perform together

CESC FABREGAS

Fabregas is an interesting case, being a new transfer. Over the course of his seasons in the Premier League as an Arsenal player, he registered some great points tallies. From 06/07 to 10/11, he scored a total of 837 points, an average of 167 per season. Those numbers are impressive, and his goals and assists speak for themselves. In his time in Spain, he scored 28 and got 34 assists for Barcelona. Those are some even more impressive numbers. With Frank Lampard gone, Fabregas could easily step up to the plate in the Chelsea midfield.

PROS

  1. Already a proven Midfielder.
  2. Never short on Goals/Assists
  3. Will more than likely be the main man in midfield

CONS

  1. Been away for three years, may have to adapt to English football again and Chelsea’s style of play.
