Gently does it. Granville and I ease ourselves into the season with another thirty-minute bite-size podcast, gradually building up our fitness before we go full tilt next month.

Yes, it’s just the pair of us again, cuddling up in our intimate studio to discuss the events of Gameweek one, whilst casting one eye on the fixtures and events to come this weekend.

We get through the usual array of regulars, with Granville explaining how a wedding and a bout of childcare threatened to ruin his campaign, just as it gets out of the blocks. We reach out to all those Siggy benchers, whilst picking the bones out United’s limp corpse following their opening day defeat. We then chat Fabregas vs Hazard, Ivanovic vs the rest (they’re going to run and run) and sing Ultimate’s praises for helping the previously unloved play their part in our Fantasy seasons.

Pick at the buffet via this link, or dash straight to the main course via the handy player below….

Mark Mark created the beast. He's now looking to tame it.

For example, some are saying Mata is back to his old ways of dogging it on defense which won't be good long term if LvG thinks he has 4 #10s. Distance covered looked at in the proper context, while not conclusive, gives some indication of overall effort.

Running around a lot doesn't always mean your being effective though. I'm just wondering if defensive stats like tackles made would be more indicative of defensive effort?

Mata had 1 tackle so it's a pretty small sample. But if part of his job is to mark a man (say Ki) then he's got to run with him not just tackle him.

Have you seen Roscola's moving field position graphics? He posts links to games not showing static average positions but showing each players position moving throughout the match. It will be a good indicator to see if Mata is dropping into his own half to do defensive work.

Thanks. Found his twitter source. Turns out Mata is one of the least mobile dots in the ManU-Swa game. I'll have to look into what the representation is actually showing.

Its alarming how far away he is from Swansea players during the game. It shows he's rarely defending against an opposition player.

Obviously United would be in possession of the ball most of the time so its fine, but that should only be half the time.

Or 4-4-3 with Sturridge on the wing and Balo in the centre

  3. The case for Fer

Norwich fan here who watched every Canaries game last year, thought I'd give my two cents on Leroy Fer, now at QPR and potentially generously priced at 5.5.

    Goal threat:
Leroy scored three times last year. Home to West Ham, away to West Brom, away to Newcastle. The West Ham and West Brom goals were nearly identical… Norwich up a goal late (collector's item in itself), other team throwing numbers forward, and Leroy breaks out for long, generally unimpeded solo runs before scoring with a pair of decent finishes. The Newcastle goal was a trademark towering header on a corner.

Basically, from where he played last year (in the double pivot in a 4-2-3-1), he doesn't have much of a goal threat from open play. He's very fit and runs pretty well so he can nab late goals on the counter, but how often are QPR gonna be winning late, anyway? With that said, he's immense on set pieces. Coulda had 3-4 on set pieces last year, easy, if not for some incredible saves/clearances off the line.

With that in mind, if he plays as a No. 10 (been given that shirt number), he could pick up a fair few goals. The reason he only scored three goals last year is not that he's a bad finisher, but rather that he so rarely got a chance to shoot last season as a deep-lying mid in Norwich's dreadful attack. Also, as I hinted at, he's an incredible header of the ball. So if Isla gets going and starts whipping in crosses, Fer seems likely to score the odd header from open play to add to his huge threat from set pieces. (You may also recall his header against Chile in Brazil).

    Assist threat:
Fer is a decent passer, but crucially for fantasy purposes, the man loves a good through ball. If Remy sticks around, this could be a potent combo, again, especially if Fer plays as a 10. Norwich had such a slow team last year that his through balls were pretty useless, but that's not the case with Remy up top.

All told, I'll be monitoring his game time/position. Pretty useless if he's playing deeper, but he could be a real steal if he locks down that role in the hole. Potentially nifty budget mid to play alongside Siggy if you're looking to do a Costa-Rooney-Aguero type front three.

Sorry to write so much about a 5.5 QPR midfielder but we Norwich fans don't have much else to talk about these days 🙁

My pleasure, all. Hard to disagree with Ryan's comment about QPR being useless, to be fair. But if he's playing as a true 10 he's a decent shout with that set piece goal threat

    Terry - Jones - Chambers
    Sigurdsson - Sterling - Ramsey - Young
    Sturridge - Costa - Rooney (C)

    Gilks - Moore - Baird - Marney

I love how fast the transfer happened too. We were linked with every player this summer but him (maybe once). When I heard his agent was in London last night I was really surprised.

12M loan for Falcao was madness. Cavani was worth the money but still a risk. I couldn't see Bony working in our system well but he's a good striker.

Starting to think, he could be better than Sturridge in positioning. If they play 442 both will play upfront. If they play 433 he is more likely to be in the middle with sturridge on his side and possibly sterling on the other.

Thus unless he is priced above 11.5 (almost impossible), then sturridge owners should go sturridge > balo.

Do I make sense? I have sturridge currently.

Either liverpool score a lot of goals this season again, or they are not as appealing in fantasy perspective with too many players to share the points. Add in rotation from champ league..

Hmm. I don't think he's good enough, he looks decidedly dodgy in possession and it was he who cost us the title against Chelsea with the silly corner he conceded, not Gerrard. I would much prefer Agger to stay and play. I think Agger is our best defender when available.

Digging a hole on Sakho mate. Sakho may look awkward on the ball but he is consistently solid at passing out of the back and a very solid defender. Was immense in the WC. There is space for Lucas too, just not next to Stevie in a double pivot. Liverpool are in the Champions League and require depth at all positions.

Chambers. Just one example. Again I personally reckon he is worth 15-20 matches for Wenger, and as a versatile player who can slot in at dm, like we may very well see this week, I am keeping all year if possible

Baseball and cricket fill the same niche in sports ecology. Both are better in person as a social event, and both require a lot of knowledge to appreciate. I like both as it happens.

The best thing about baseball is it paving the way for serious sports stats analysis. I has enough data kept for that to be possible, people did it, got ignored for a while, and it was used to win, a lot. Now that is spreading into football, which is great.

I'm English but love it mate, Sundays without nfl are almost as bad as Saturdays without football, always do a treble on the 3 sky games and can get great odds for first td scorers

I prefer the big three upfront that you have given Haz's price. More money upfront makes it easier to juggle team in a week or two when more form players emerge is a plus also

50/50 Sagna may get the nod in an early big one like this.

Sagna also for chasing Sterling/Balo on the wing...not that our Zaba is slow!

Bit of a selection nightmare on that side of the pitch. Two really good defenders. I wouldn't have either right now until we see how that defense shapes up

          This.

I reckon Mangala will emerge soon enough as the best pick if you feel so inclined to have a City defender.

If, when fit (all at the same time these days unlikely), and firing...

      Who do you leave out?

RVP Rooney Aguero Costa Sturridge Balotelli

Basically what three would u desire? Go with fixtures and just use a free each week to flip flop?

      Costa. Rooney. Aguero prolly here.

RVP is an injury risk. Rooney tracks back, defends, scores and assists, Costa dives and so far hasn't been great nor has he had a chance against elite opposition. Sturridge can score but I am skeptical of his potential and if Balotelli comes that will split his production.

Rooney all the way for me.

Big question. Have been focusing on RVP but he is too expensive.

Think that Rooney Aguero Costa offers the best combination -- Costa as the main frontman, Aguero as the permanent captaincy option, Rooney as the all-round workhorse. As a Sterling owner I can pass on the Liverpool guys.

Hopefully 2/3 on pens as well.

So RVP not worth 2 more than Rooney with the pens? If both are firing.

I'm not sold on RVP any more in FPL unless absolutely essential. Think his peak has come and gone, and one more injury...uh...
