Mathieu Debuchy is sidelined for a three-month period after undergoing ankle surgery. Brendan Rodgers has worries in midfield as the Merseyside derby edges closer, Alan Pardew is determined to be cautious with Papiss Cisse’s fitness, while the injuries ease for Everton ahead of a hectic schedule.

Debuchy Undergoes Surgery

Arsene Wenger revealed yesterday that Mathieu Debuchy has undergone surgery on his ankle. The French defender suffered the injury in the Gunners’ Gameweek 4 draw with Man City and Wenger believes the right-back will now be missing for around three months:

“He has had surgery and will be out for three months. It all went well, but it can be a week or two earlier or a week or two later, but it will be around three months. It is a blow of course, how big it will be we will only know afterwards because it will be down to how well we replace him. We bought [Calum] Chambers for that.”

The Scout Says: Debuchy’s injury blow may mean we lose one cheaper route into the Gunners’ backline, but it also means that another – even more budget friendly – option now looks nailed on. Over 20,000 managers have already acquired the services of the 4.5-priced Calum Chambers this week, and that figure looks set to increase momentously following yesterday’s update on the Frenchman. Wenger’s side secured their first clean sheet of the season in their 3-0 victory over Aston Villa at the weekend, and will be optimistic of adding to that when they face a Spurs side who have struck just twice in their last three league fixtures on Saturday evening. A trip to Chelsea in Gameweek 7 is certain to prove a big test, but beyond that, the schedule then takes a significant turn for the better as Wenger’s side face just two of last term’s top eight in the following nine matches, bringing Chambers onto many a Fantasy radar right up until the festive period.

DIAME ENJOYING CENTRAL BERTH

Hull City’s deadline-day signing Mo Diame has revealed his relief after returning to his preferred central midfield role. Mainly utilised on the flank during his spell at West Ham, the Senegal international is now keen to kick on at his new club, with goals one of his priorities:

“I am in a different position to West Ham. I was a winger there. I am now back in midfield where I have played all my life. West Ham is a great club and the fans were always behind me. But I am not a winger. I have goal targets, too, and playing as a winger meant I couldn’t meet that target. I like Hull as a club. I can see myself doing well here.”

The Scout Says: It’s taken just two appearances in a Hull shirt for Diame to score half as many goals as he did for West Ham throughout the whole of last season, and there’s no denying that the 5.4-priced midfielder’s potential is on the up now he’s back in his favoured position. Diame’s influence in the last two Gameweeks is ranked third – only behind Man United pair Ander Herrera and Angel Di Maria – in our ICT rankings, yet the 27-year-old is still owned by just 0.4% of managers in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. Tucked in behind a front two of Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez, Diame’s performances will be crucial for Steve Bruce’s side as they face tough encounters with Man City, Arsenal and Liverpool in the next four Gameweeks – having conceded seven in their last three, it’s clear that the Tigers will need goals at the other end if they are to overcome their lofty opponents, and Diame could prove an outstanding differential if he can orchestrate their offensive ambitions.

PARDEW RELUCTANT TO RISK CISSE

Alan Pardew has acknowledged that he must be careful with the fitness of Papiss Cisse, and has revealed that he is unlikely to hand Saturday’s two-goal hero the full 90 minutes in tomorrow night’s cup meeting with Crystal Palace.

The Scout Says: Over 2,700 managers have already taken a punt on Cisse following his weekend brace against Hull, though it’s clear that the former Bundesliga striker is still far from full sharpness in Pardew’s eyes. Nonetheless, with summer signing Emmanuel Riviere yet to get off the mark for Newcastle, and no other genuine forward options in their ranks, the 5.9-priced Cisse could very well be reinstated in Pardew’s starting XI for Monday night’s visit of Stoke. With Cisse on board, Remy Cabella may finally be able to produce the returns his underlying stats have deserved – the Frenchman has just one assist to his name so far this season, despite the fact that his creative stats for the first five Gameweeks are on par with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Alexis Sanchez.

OVIEDO AND KONE SET FOR COMEBACKS

Roberto Martinez has confirmed that Bryan Oviedo and Arouna Kone are back in contention to face Swansea in the Capital One Cup this evening following long injury lay-offs. Kone has been absent for the Toffees since last October after suffering a serious knee injury just a couple of months after moving to Goodison, whilst Oviedo has not featured for Martinez’s side since sustaining a broken leg back in January.

The Scout Says: With Kevin Mirallas, Steven Naismith and Aiden McGeady all dropping to the bench in Everton’s defeat to Crystal Palace on Sunday, it’s clear that Fantasy managers will need to be wary of the Toffees’ attacking assets in the coming weeks. With domestic cup and European duties to manoeuvre, rotation was always going to be on the cards for Martinez, and the returns of Oviedo and Kone look set to increase the prospects further. This concern, allied with the fact that trips to Liverpool and Man United are up next for the Merseyside outfit, means that managers are likely to be shopping elsewhere before the schedule brightens up for the Toffees from Gameweek 8 onwards. However, Oviedo’s classification as a defender in FPL could make the Costa Rican an intriguing differential once fully fit, with a place on the wing a more likely role for the 4.9-priced man.

Midfield Concerns for Rodgers

Jordan Henderson and Philippe Coutinho are both to be assessed before tonight’s Capital One Cup tie against Middlesbrough. Coutinho missed Liverpool’s loss to West Ham on Saturday evening due to a groin problem, whilst Henderson picked up a hip strain in that match, and Brendan Rogers has confirmed that both are major doubts for tonight’s encounter:

“Jordan Henderson picked up a knock so we need to assess where he’s at. And Philippe Coutinho is highly unlikely for tomorrow as well.”

The Scout Says: It’s certainly not been the start to the season we expected for Coutinho, whose creative flair is yet to harbour any returns for his declining band of owners. Nonetheless, Rodgers will be keen to get the Brazilian back to full fitness for this weekend’s Merseyside derby after the disappointing displays of Adam Lallana since his return from injury. Henderson, meanwhile, has offered his 13.5% ownership a modest haul thus far, with a steady average of 3.6 points per appearance not too poor considering his 6.0 tag. The midfielder has certainly been a pivotal figure in Rodgers’ side, and the Anfield boss is unlikely to risk his fitness ahead of Saturday’s derby, when he will try to overturn the form that has seen Liverpool lose two on the trot against Villa and the Hammmers.

im going to try to keep ivan all season......think he can at least match baines given that chelsea will begin to pick up multiple clean sheets and evertons def sucks.....against the smaller teams ivan has been bombing forward just as much as baines......ivan also a beast in the box for corners/set pieces.....yh baines has pens n free kicks but i reckon this will b matched by chelseas greater number of clean sheets

    LONG POST ALERT 😀

I'm sitting on Balotelli with enough in the coffers to bring in Agüero ahead of Manchester City's amazing run of blue on the Season Ticker... but having dug a little deeper, those lovely fixtures should come with word of caution.

First of all, there's the summer exit of Alvaro Negredo to Valencia on loan which left City with just three main strikers vying for two spots (most of the time).

Then there is the current injury of Steven Jovetic (who was regularly sidelined last season through injury) which kept him out of City's last two GWs.

Those two things make Agüero nailed on when fit, right?

Agüero (a regular at the clinic, himself) looks incredible for a run of games that would see him serious © material week in, week out.

But now I'm wondering if it is really worth shelling out £12.1m on the little Argentine at all...

    1) City must beat Roma in the CL after losing to Bayern. This could become a battle for 2nd and the home tie against the Italians would be crucial. With Hull (GW6) and Villa (GW7) either side of the tie and just a few days between them, surely Aguero will see restricted minutes at best.

    2) The international break - Pellegrini gave Aguero forever to return from WC duty and the Brazil & Hong Kong games would give him little time to rest from a long flight ahead of the game at home to Spurs. The Spurs game is followed immediately by a return to midweek CL action in Russia making the GW8 game a major concern.

    3) IF (and that is a genuine worry) Aguero makes it through those games unscathed, the fixture list continues to flaunt big games sandwiched by more opportune PL games, where he could continue to get rest.

I think Agüero is arguably the best striker in the league, but because of his injury record, and the nature of the fixtures Man City and Argentina face in the next few GW's, I might just go without.

How do you guys see it?

He only needs an hour to score a brace, right?

Agüero's Calendar until the new year:

Interesting. I think you have some fair points. Either Aguero will be rested more than we should be comfortable with for £12.1, or he's likely to pick up an injury.

This makes me think that Falcao over Aguero isn't such a bad idea after all.

I'm honestly not worried about City attacking cover at the moment. Yes, Kun might score three vs Hull that have dismal defensive stats, but then what? The international break is around the corner and Argentina face Brazil in a friendly.

I have been burned twice in the last two seasons with Kun getting injured.

      Staying clear for now.

I'm not worried so much about him getting injured tbh.

If he gets injured, i sell him. Easy.

My big worry is his game time, given how crucial he is to City vs how risky it would be for them to play him in all of those games. They have to take care of him and the best opportunity to do so would be the PL games.

There aren't many other options around though besides from Welb, Pelle and Ulloa though so Aguero provides that consistency of points regardless if you will (c) him or not. I've got him and looking forward to owning him personally regardless of these risks. He is not crippling my team either as I have the midfield I want and more than happy with my defence.

At the end of the day he is by far the deadliest finisher in the league and he will bring home the bacon as long as he's fit.

Falcao is out of the Europe, out of the cups, in a team with an overly cock-out philosophy and is an absolute goal machine.

Very tempted to just plump for him, but then United's fixtures get rough and they are a side in need of re-balance.

I brought Aguero in yesterday. He may not play 90 minutes every gameweek, but he doesn't need to in order to rack up the points. Man City are now in 6th and losing ground; being in the Champions League next season is no less important than staying in it now; lowly regarded sides are knocking off the big ones. If Aguero gets injured, I'll sell him and possibly make some money.

Do you think Costa will be benched? Yes on no. I'm going yes on the basis that Chelsea look as though they could walk the title this year and Mourinho probably quite fancies picking up the CL too

Cheslea have Bolton tomorrow which he obviously won't play any part in, Villa on saturday then they are away in the CL on Tuesday. Unless of corse Mourinho has some kind of policy of saving Costa for the prem until the CL knockout stages?

I have no idea, but to me it makes more sense that Costa play on saturday, and Drogba/Remy starting in CL next tuesday.

Thoughts on Falcao? I took a punt on him before my GW4 wildcard, and after the Leicester game I think he shows potential. I'm not sure, though, and feel a little uncertain about leaving Aguero out.

I'll stick for this week, but do you guys think he's a keeper for the forseeable future?

I was .1 away from affording ramsey > adm so I couldnt have done it - but I feel it was fate that I shouldn't have been able to afford him and as such I have missed the rise and I am now going with the 'differential' of in fact not having him!

      I hope it pays off.

Teams pretty solid without him anyway tbh, I need to save 2 FT's now in the next 2 weeks so I can downgrade hendo and upgrade elsewhere (possible ADM come that time, hopefully not)

I had had this view last week and held off, wrong decision. The fact that many captained Di maria to boot made it a very costly error.

Little on no one will captain ramsey plenty will captain Adm again this week, not having him is a huge gamble in my book. I took the hit to get him in, hes looking very dangerous and has a big haul in the last 2 weeks.

Marney is starter, you cant get a hattrick scoring mid for 4.5m. Tiote is another option.

Boyd have played 2 x 90 minutes the past couple of games, and is fielded out wide. But it seems like a really boring sideway move. I would stick with Marney.

    Dear Scouts,

I dont suppose there's any way we can try and make the Scout Picks Champion selection process less of a popularity contest? Just think that would be fairer.

It really puts me off bothering to read through the teams that folk have submitted when I know its just likely to be based on popularity. So I dont bother voting (might also be an idea to make it a slightly longer period for the voting if possible too)

    Cheers

    🙂

Like some way of making it anonymous so the team's are definitely voted for on merit?

Yep, the canvassing for votes is extremely irritating!

Should have 24 hours to submit a team (perhaps similar to the community articles) then have an article listing them as option a, b, c etc with a poll like the captain poll that runs for a further 24 hours.

good idea! I think the first pre-selection should come from the Scouts. How about after everyone posted their teams, the Scouts then select around 15 teams after a given deadline and then let the members vote similar to the captain vote, and then the team with the highest percentage out of those pre-selected teams will win

I was going to bring up the same thing. Seeing the winners of the last 5 GWs and the vast difference in votes between the regulars and the normal members, there is no way the normal members will ever be selected even if the picks are actually identical. I understand that the regulars are maybe more trusted because of their big contribution to this site but there has to be a way to have more balance. I am not sure how though.

I think a key point is that it needs to be selected by the community. The best, simplest and easist way of doing that is people present their teams and then people vote.

We ask people to vote for the best team to go up against the Scouts in each week's picks. It is up to the community to vote for that. If they decide to vote for other reasons we can't stop them doing that. It is up to the community to vote sensibly.

I've seen lots of suggestions about anonymising them and constructing polls but all this takes time. Other suggestions involving podcast presenters deciding go against this being a community vote.

I'm always keen for tinkering and making the selection better but at the end of the day this is your vote, we ask you to vote for the best team.

Also keep in mind we need it simple. We need to get a set of picks to Paul for the end of Thursday so he can start getting images and writing text for Friday's picks. We need a system in place that allows for that to happen.

Another point is that of all the community champions so far all are regular and well respected posters who presented very good teams. I think people are putting too much of a negative on the popularity side of it - they are popular because people respect their advice and are the kind of people they would want to put a team forward on their behalf for the picks.

Just to clarify my suggestion. The trio are involved in deciding the champion but the community can be involved in deciding the team but just that the champion clarifies the reasons during the scoutcast.

"I found Doosra's reason for Steve Sidwell compelling enough"
"Davies - Leicester Expert convinced me to get Vardy because....etc"
"....because of Wakey's table on shots in the box. etc"

BTW. Appreciate there's no way you'll be able to pacify everyone, no matter whatever system you come up with. It's just a mob reaction to change. In a couple of months, we'll all be treating this as norm and playing along.

Thanks for the reply Jonty. I totally get the need for simplicity, it clearly can't be too complicated to administer otherwise it becomes too burdensome.

In its current form it may not be ideal but at least its better than the UK electoral system! I will endeavor to vote for my team of choice each week. Hopefully other teams will get a look in as time goes on.

Would it be worth limiting folk to being the community champion just once in a season or would that be election engineering?! 😀

No worries. Its a very open system. All we ask is for votes. Its up to the community to vote for the best team to represent them. Its the community's call how this goes. I hope after this discussion more vote for the team and give new posters a shot at this too...but as I said all selected so far have had great teams anyway.

I'll get shot down for saying it, but I've lost a lot of interset in the Scout Picks this season because of this new format. Much preferred how it used to be, and the whole popularity vote for the 'community champion' only further detracts from it imo...

What a load of bullshit Jonty man (sorry). You're all for opinion but you won't be changing it. That last paragraph is a load of bollocks. The whole concept was including people. All people in the picks. That's not the case. Everyone puts up more or less very good teams but most don't stand a chance. Ever. I can't see how you can't see this

Or we could all just ignore the canvassers and vote for the best team. The more of us that vote, the less effect popularity will have.

This is true. I will certainly make a point to vote for the team that I believe to be the best from now on, and I hope others will remember to do the same.

Am all for anonymity since the idea to vote for a member instead of the selected squad lacks the critical thinking that makes the Scout Picks so great and a feature of this site that so many care about. As it was likely a first way into this site for many of us when we arrived here, anything to keep the feeling of expertise surrounding that would be great. As a Deadzoner, I might suggest something a bit more inclusive.

One way to streamline would be for all interested parties email squads on Monday, Jonty posts midday and community votes by midday Tuesday, winner is announced that afternoon/evening, then a new discussion is Hot Topic'ed.

Right now, there seems to be less discussion on the players to choose and more on the community member to select them. The above set-up might enable for at least two rounds of chat around the world about selections rather than the selectors.

This has possibility. But again would rely on me anonymising and copy and pasting around 50 plus teams...giving each a code or something like a number that can direct me back to that person. That could potentially take a fair bit of time. It is about the best suggestion there has been so far.

Would be a good deal of extra work alright. if ye did go down that route I'd be happy to help out with it, man the emails, posts the teams or whatever.

I think carry on as is for a bit longer and give it a proper test, maybe if we all just frown on the canvasers it will cease to be an issue 😀

Another advantage is this might limit "group think" and provide us with some interesting variation in the teams, often it's the same names just tweaked by one or two players. Could just be those players are obvious picks.

I would suggest (if possible) that the mods choose the community team based on the team's posted by the community like the 11 players selected by majority of the members in that champion selection post.
Rather than upvoting a post, mods could just count the no. of times a player is selected in a team and the preferred formation used by majority of the community members.

Unlike many here I quite like the cult of personality, with well-respected members of the community being rewarded by being voted the community's champion of the week provided that their team also meets with our approval.

However, I do think that it ought to be a two or three stage process:

                  1. Candidates submit their teams, not anonymously.

                  2. Next day, Jonty lists all the candidates' teams, or those with a reasonable number of upvotes, and we each vote for our first choice, with the original upvotes NOT being carried forward. This would mean that we don't start casting our final votes until we have seen all the contenders.

                  3. A Hot Topic to offer suggestions to the champion for trying to improve their team wouldn't be a bad idea, but the champion should still have the right to make the final decisions on their team after taking these suggestions into account. He or she would be perfectly within their rights to reject them all and stick to their original ideas. I think that getting our champion to appear on the Scoutcast might be quite difficult though.

...Perhaps a spreadsheet could be used to list the contending teams in stage 2, and a system similar to the Captains Poll used to count the votes.

I agree 100%. I personally think a simple couple of steps would be to disqualify anyone who canvases in other threads/topics (not going to require a massive amount of mod work, these posts are painfully obvious :P).

Also, I have a hard time just reading/finding teams sometimes.
I understand people like to discuss the presented team in the comments below their team, but often it's just a load of banter and makes it hard to quickly read through the dozen or so submissions.

I never realised the community picks meant so much to people. I wouldn't have posted a team if I thought there would be this much hostility.

Warning: a lot of people will be strongly against the finalised team, they will not be boring popular picks. But, to be honest, I don't give shit. You're all just going to have to come to peace with it 😛

ok after tweaking a bit more here's my WCT:

              Heaton/Gilks
              Clyne/Baines/Wilson/Naylor/Duff
              ADM/Fab/Siggy/Sterling/Downing
              Costa/Pelle/Welbz

GK: want to save as much as possible and imo it makes no big difference in terms of points
DEF: I know Baines has tough fixtures but he can always score so i will play him and Clyne every week and rotate between the other 3 DEFs
MID: self-explanatory and Downing is a good back-up as he is always nailed and gets some good returns, West Ham also being more attacking and all that
FWD: more or less self-explanatory, if I really need Kun then I can get him in with a -4 if necessary

              1.2 ITB

              Thoughts are always highly appreciated

Better go Costa as a defensive move - could be destroyed if he explodes

Jeebus, only 34pts from your captain over 5 weeks.

                  yet you are ranked 10k.

Ramsey or Tadic one week only?

No other Gooner or Southampton coverage.

Rest of mini league either has Rambo of Welbeck.

                Cheers

I really do think Costa will be benched on Saturday and Remy will take his place. Seem no many on here agree but for me that significantly dents his captaincy potential

What would you change about this team? (for after this GW)

                Begovic Gilks
                Clyne Naylor PVA Wisdom Duff
                Fabregas Sterling Ramsey Siggy Davis
                Rooney Costa Pelle

Rooney -> Aguero looks like the most obvious move.

                Begovic
                Clyne Ivan Moreno (Duff) (Wisdom)
                Siggy Fab Sterling ADM (Boyd)
                Costa Balotelli Wellbeck

                2FT 0.1 ITB

Fairly happy with team but not sure about Balotelli or Moreno. Thinking pelle or Aguero, but would need to downgrade Moreno to fund. Or just leave as is?

                  Balotelli -> Pelle?

Balo to Kun would be ideal but it would mean downgrading Moreno to a 4.0 and Begpvic to a 4.5 wouldn't t it?

                Hey Lads.
Quick poll, if you were on WC would you have Hazard or Fab?
I squizzed my WC after a poor week in sheer frustration.
                here's my team:

                Forster Gilks
                Baines Clyne Taylor Duff Moore
                ADM Hazard Sterling Siggy Boyd
                Costa Pelle Wellbeck

2.3M ITB (For Pelle to Lukaka in a few weeks time)

                Thoughts?

Get Fab. More consistent so far and is linking with Costa well.

Fabregas gives consistent returns, while Hazard can be explosive in games... I have gone for Fabregas since the start and am happy with him. I recommend Fabregas...

I'd be hugely tempted to go Hazard just for the differential if i was on a WC. Maybe even both are an option short term?

Got a lucky start and apart from Ivanovic, Naismith and di Maria, got most of the early scorers. First red of the season last week, though, sitting around 4k.

Arsenal have 4 fit first team defenders, surely they won't risk more than 1-2. There will be plenty of goals.

                @SherlockHolmes (or for anyone interested)

You asked about if I see us (Burnley) scoring soon... The simple answer is Yes

End of day, I've said all along we could do what Pulis did with Palace last year & so far kind of been proved right.... (Defensive wise anyway)

We lost our second highest goal scorer last season & now lost our highest... I said at the time the strikers brought in wern't good enough, again, been proved right, Dyche wants to build on a defensive foundation & hit on the counter, the problem is, our strikers arn't good enough, Sordell, Jutkiewicz (I don't think) are Championship quality & Barnes has never been given a chance (sadly)

Overall, just stick with our defense
