Gameweek 5’s Bandwagons – The Verdict

We’re only five Gameweeks into the season but we’ve already seen plenty of bandwagons rolling past.  It’s one of the most satisfying feelings in the game when a transfer pays off immediately.  Likewise, a new signing blanking on debut for your team can be hugely frustrating.  Or, even more so, if the player you’ve just dumped finally breaks his barren run and scores big.

Here, I look at how Gameweek 5’s most popular transfers performed.  Listed below are the top five ins and outs ahead of the GW5 fixtures (excluding injured players). Remember, though, this is just for fun and there is plenty of time for any of the transfers below to pay off.

RESULTS

Rank / player / net transfers / GW5 pts

In

  1. Deigo Costa / +310,165 / 1
  2. Angel Di Maria / +293,409 / 11
  3. Cesc Fabregas / +136,664 / 2
  4. Morgan Schneiderlin / +134,253 / 2
  5. Eric Dier / +124,815 / 2

Out

  1. Yaya Toure / -86,061 / 1
  2. Eden Hazard / -67,758 / 7
  3. David Silva / -54,895 / 1
  4. Andre Schürrle / -45,889 / 6
  5. John Terry / -44,030 / 2

Honourable mentions

  • Steven Naismith / +109,414 / 0
  • Raheem Sterling / -42,781 / 10

For this admittedly tiny sample, only Manchester United’s Angel Di Maria’s haul at Leicester paid off last week for the top 5 players transferred in.  Overall, there’s not much difference in total Gameweek score (18) to the players people got rid of the most (17).  I must note that further down the rankings there were plenty of popular transfers which were successes last week.  Obviously this doesn’t mean that getting Chelsea’s Diego Costa or Cesc Fabregas in was a bad transfer, just that often it’s not so desperately urgent to do so as sometimes we may think.  The herd doesn’t necessarily know best.

GW6 BANDWAGONS

In

The heady mix of form and fixtures has a seen a surge of people transferring in Leonardo Ulloa and Angel Di Maria. Can the Argentines maintain their incredible goal-scoring stats?

Out

Steven Naismith and Aaron Ramsey both blanked in GW5, leading to significant sales this week.  They both have derby matches against neighbours with defensive difficulties.  Will they reward their owners who keep the faith?

I like these. I hope you do them every week.

In also considering dumping Rambo for hazard, just got a feeling his explosion might be imminent. And 2 home games on the bounce.

      You mean he's... due?

        Yes. He's due. Explosion imminent.

        Get him in.

        Might even captain over costa.

Thanks, I'm also very tempted by Hazard. Was hoping his price would drop too but clearly that is so last season

"Obviously this doesn’t mean that getting Chelsea’s Diego Costa or Cesc Fabregas in was a bad transfer, just that often it’s not so desperately urgent to do so as sometimes we may think."

You're sort of right. But with a player like Costa - who at the moment feature in 90% of the teams in my mini league - a bad GW hurt everybody just as much, whereas a good or great GW would hurt the one who didn't catch the bandwagon badly. You might not gain a lot by getting on the most popular bandwagons, but you certainly reduce the potential of falling behind.

I'm not advocating jumping on every wagon there is, but sometimes it could be a quite effective, even if quite defensive, move to maintain your position.

Haha, I agree. My submitted text has been edited with two sentences joined together there. I'm not critisizing as the edits have improved the piece by making it more readable but for Costa and Fab I said something along the lines of 'why didn't you get them in weeks ago'!

Nice, I remember doing something similar to this a few seasons back. Have you considered assessing these bandwagons over a period of say 5GW's to see if they were good or bad?

I have considered that and it would be a far better test of whether a transfer works or not, e.g. last week Sterling (who I got in) would be considered a failure with only 1 point but this week it paid off.

Advantage of this is it is simple and it appeals to my sense of schadenfreude.

    Great article. Well done.

You forgot the Saints bandwagon for this week. 120k people already transferred in Clyne, while Schneiderlin and Pelle are worth mentioning. Think all will be successful.

Welbeck is pretty popular nowadays too, but he's only a shoe in by GW8 imo.

Agreed. Just picked the top two so far this week but sure Saints will feature next week if I can be bothered to do a writeup. The Southampton players were the ones who did well this GW with plenty of transfers in.

Good articles , would be good to keep a running total over the course of the season.

Only. Difficulty could be that many of the most sold may actually not play due to being injured or suspended.

Will be interesting to see over the course of a full season how bandwagons actually perform in the week they are transfered in.

Thanks. I've excluded transfers out for flagged players like Debuchy. That's partly why the 'in' totals are bigger than 'out'

Welbeck should have included in the bandwagon in for gw 5

Do you mean last week (GW5) or for next week (GW6)? Last week about 50k got him in. 73k in so far this week, which is big but less than half for DiM or Ulloa.

This is good, keep it up.

I believe average points per game the 4 following gameweeks would make statistically valid sense
