Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 7 – The Weak

Yesterday, we highlighted the main beneficiaries of the schedule over the next four to six Gameweeks, with a look at those teams set for promising runs of fixtures. Today we look at the flipside of the coin, as we see that United’s kind opening stretch is about to come to an end, Chelsea face a tough test to maintain their unbeaten record, while Aston Villa still have plenty to do to weather their stormy ride.

Man United

“frisking

United were well on the road to bouncing back from their Leicester humiliation, leading West Ham last weekend, when Wayne Rooney lashed out at Stewart Downing and earned himself a three-match ban. Louis van Gaal will be hoping his team can continue their progress without their captain, but in terms of fixtures, the next six Gameweeks look tough – the Red Devils face four of last season’s top five in Everton, Man City, Chelsea and Arsenal.

Beset by injuries, the Reds’ defence has been anything but solid and the upcoming fixtures will surely be the last straw for any remaining owners of David De Gea or Marcos Rojo. In contrast, the Reds’ impressive midfield cast has been a profitable source of Fantasy points. Although these fixtures present managers with a dilemma over Angel Di Maria, with Ander Herrera injured and Juan Mata far from guaranteed regular pitch time, the Argentine remains the man most likely in the middle of the park. Up top, Robin van Persie scored his second goal in as many matches last week, and whilst his owners may be minded to keep hold, new investment may be hasty, whilst Radamel Falcao’s relatively minimal impact has failed to convince he’s worthy of the hefty outlay for now.

QPR

“frisking

In spite of a relatively kind opening schedule, the R’s are stuck in the relegation zone already and Harry Redknapp has his work cut out to avoid seeing his team sink further into the mire. Over the next six Gameweeks Liverpool and Man City roll up to Loftus Road to test the Rangers, while a trip to Stamford Bridge is hardly appealing. Such fixtures lower the Fantasy stock of this team even further and investment at this point looks exceedingly unlikely.

The Hoops’ defence hasn’t really measured up to even the modest expectations, with just one shut-out and 13 goals conceded. Steven Caulker’s threat in the box has already come to fruition but looks unlikely to compensate for the goals we can expect to be conceded over this schedule, and while Rob Green has seen off the threat of Alex McCarthy, it’s fairly academic for Fantasy purposes. The set-piece delivery of veteran Niko Krancjar has caught the eye of some in recent weeks, but with these fixtures, he doesn’t look like a wise purchase. Similarly, Charlie Austin notched his second goal of the season and will be hoping to reprise his promotion-winning form, but with so many in-form budget strikers to choose from, the schedule is a persuasive deterrent.

Aston Villa

“frisking

After a fabulous opening to the season, Paul Lambert’s Lazarus-esque team have hit a wall of fixtures, losing 3-0 to both Arsenal and Chelsea. Next up, they face Man City and then Everton before the schedule once again eases up. Anyone who has retained Brad Guzan or Alan Hutton through the aforementioned matches will no doubt keep them pinned to the back of their substitutes bench but fresh investment in the defence that kept three clean sheets in their first four will surely have to wait until Gameweek 9. News of Christian Benteke’s return to action will be music to Lambert’s ears and affords Fantasy managers a nice settling-in period to assess his form before investing.

Be Wary Of…

Hull
Steve Bruce’s side did well to come back at Man City after going two goals down, with a display that demonstrates the confidence and attacking impetus instilled this season. Hull will need that for two of their next three fixtures, though, as after the home comforts of hosting Crystal Palace, they face back-to-back trips to both Arsenal and Liverpool.

The fixtures after that are a bit mixed for the Tigers until around Gameweek 15 when they embark on a very nice run. Until then, it’s a little hard to recommend the likes of Allan McGregor or Curtis Davies – certainly James Chester has become persona non grata after missing out through Bruce’s formation tinkering. In midfield, Mo Diame’s two goals have caught the eye but he will struggle to keep that pace against the upcoming opposition, while Nikica Jelavic and Abel Hernandez may also toil, and are again victims of the current proliferation of budget talent.

Chelsea
Unbeaten in all competitions this season, Jose Mourinho’s side seem to be cruising to glory and their prime Fantasy assets are hot property. But, as they showed against Man City, even their wings can be clipped against tough opposition as Mourinho reins in his team’s attacking instincts to edge ahead in tight matches.

With that in mind, a schedule that includes Arsenal, Man United and Liverpool in the next six Gameweeks could curtail the Blues’ Fantasy potential, although home fixtures against QPR and West Brom amidst that run may compensate. In addition, it shouldn’t be forgotten that the defence could be the main beneficiaries of Mourinho’s tactics, enhancing the appeal of Branislav Ivanovic and bringing the so far under-performing Gary Cahill, John Terry and Cesar Azpilicueta into contention. Cesc Fabregas, on the other hand, presents a dilemma for his legion of owners, and although Diego Costa is unlikely in the extreme to leave any teams, he might find himself bereft of armbands, offering hope of differential captains to shake up the rankings.

West Brom
As Alan Irvine gradually gets to grips with the Baggies’ hot seat, his team are now unbeaten in three games in all competitions and will take great heart from thumping Burnley on Sunday. Unfortunately, the fixture list looks set to disrupt their momentum, with showdowns against Liverpool, Man United and Chelsea over the next six Gameweeks.

The excellent value of Andre Wisdom (ineligible to face Liverpool this weekend) looks set to be tested, while Craig Dawson will be relying on goal threat to prop up his points. Graham Dorrans found his feet very abruptly with a huge 16-point haul last weekend but will struggle to repeat it in the near term, while Saido Berahino’s brace has similarly caused some ears to prick up – given the schedule, anyone considering investment may be better off waiting until the storm has passed.

I see many are starting to question Siggi.
He is playing just as well as he was at thestart of the season, points will arrive as long as he plays in the hole. There are four times when he should be sols

    1) Stops playing in the hole
    2) Injured for more than one week
    3) Terrible fixtures
    4) He loses value

None of the above apply as yet. When/if they do then change him, otherwise your being silly

Either your credibility is important or it isn't, you can't have it both ways. If you're going to adduce your rank and your HoF history in support of your opinions then it's equally reasonable to adduce your record of saying one thing and doing another. Both are judgements on you.

This reminds me of stocks. Have you heard of "left holding the bag "?

Siggy hasn't done crap for weeks. I don't really care if his "stats " are good, because the only "stats" that count in this league are goals and assists and if those aren't being acquired, then he's useless. If he blanks again this week at home to Newcastle then it's time to sell. Period. If people want to watch him, or any other midfielder get 2's and 3's and not drop them because their "stats " say not to, then you deserve to lose your ass just like in the stock market.

Its not just his stats though, he is genuinely playing well.

In Roulette three reds in a row has n bearing on the next ball landing on red or black.
It the same with blanks. As long as hes threatening he is just as likely to score after a blank as he is after a hattrick. The only thing that has changed is the perception

          13 , 5 , 11 2, 2, 3

Its the order of the sequence that has people wanting to sell. If you accept he is playing just as he was then there is no problem at all.
Especially when you consider the last three games were tougher than the first three then its very understandable

            NEW h Great fixture
            Stoke away tough

At his price what do you expect? Hes not going to score every week. Some people have very unrealistic expectations. If they believe any similar priced players willdo better i think they are in for a suprise

4 week average of 4.5 which still aint bad.

That will change drastically if he blanks again this week though. Could have a lot to do with the striker in front of him.

I understand, but this goes for any player really. I don't care if your playing really well and you look good, if your not producing fantasy stats, your not worth having on my team. There's only so many blanks in a row I can take. Yeah, I'm sure he will come around again, but when? If not this weekend, then the next ? Or maybe not for 3 more? In the meantime, I could pick up someone in good goal scoring form and reap the benefits.

Basically my point is that Siggy is not essential regardless of what he looks like on the pitch. It's the same as any business.... Produce now or I'll get soneone else who will.

Now in saying that , he has a very favorable fixture this weekend, so let's see what happens. He's basically on probation on my team currently. If he produces this weekend, hell probably stay... But if he puts up another 2, he's more than likely gone... Regardless of how "good " he looked.

I understand where you are coming from, psychologically its not easy keeping players with three duck eggs. However didnt someone do an article recently which showed a player was actually more likely to score after a blank than if he had scored the previous week.

Trigger is right. Whether or not someone 'looks good' and is producing good stats is of course important. If siggy plays really well this week and fires a few SOT but the keeper makes some crazy saves there is nothing more that can be done. If Schneiderlin on the other hand, does nothing all game but the ball happens to fall to him in the box from a set piece and he taps it into the net then it doesn't make sense to switch. Assuming this is the case then basic probability says it is a matter of time before he's hot again.

I agree that now is a bad time to sell. Whilst he has strong fixtures and is playing in the hole he is worth keeping. Rumour has it however that Swansea might start playing 2 up front, mightn't be a bad idea considering their poor underlying offensive stats.

Using the comparison tool in the Members area sorting by average appearance over matches and over last two game weeks it does indeed look like Sigurdsson's performances haven't wavered too significantly much in terms of underlying stats. His goal threat is marginally down and he's getting into the box less often, but he's getting more touches in the final third which is encouraging. Home and away is more indicative. He's more likely to be involved in attacking areas at home than away.

I think the key for Sigurdsson is to judge him on home performances. If they start to waver then it would be time to ditch. Swansea are much better at home and for his price what you would expect from a midfielder is good home stats. He will not score every week, which makes me think he is priced accordingly. What it does prove though is that he is benchable when away...which means it could be viable to have a playing fifth midfielder to alternate with him, rather than as many have (me included) a place holder like Marney. An upgrade for Marney is a move I'm considering after looking into this rather than ditching a solid four mid like Siggy.

I've seen enough stats to keep, but I'll be closely monitoring those home games.

Chelsea away and two games down to 10 men have skewed the stats too. I'd need stronger evidence in order to consider getting rid.

That was my impression too , that he is still playing well. Agreed that if people realistically manage their expectations of him and bench when appopriate, then he is what he is, a very decent fourth midfieldet

Does the slight drop in statistics over the last few weeks show more about the limitations of statistics than the decling form of Siggi.? Like Pasqalinho says if your playing Chelsea your stats are sure to dip

Indeed. the fact that there was only a minor dip away to Chelsea proves that he is still doing well in terms of performance.

I think overall he is typical of so many players that they are simply better at home, because teams generally play better at home.

I've given him until at least GW10 when 3 may be a factor

But Swansea have struggled in the last 3, but that's ok as 2 of them were tough and he was withdrawn late on v Sunderland due to Rangel's red

Jonty makes a good point re a 5th mid though, maybe something I'll look at some point

I have a cunning plan, milords.

I am an Arsenal fan, and my arch nemesis in my office mini league is a Manchester United fan.

I would like to get under his skin by changing my handy ringtone to the Emirates crowd singing "he scores when he wants ... he scores when he wants ... Danny Welbeck ... he scores when he wants".

Does anyone have such an audio file? If so, are you willing to share in the name of banter?

          Jesus Shuttlesworth the ageless wonder.

Downing has the nice fixture, sure, but wouldn't bench either quality striker in form regardless of opposition in Welbz or Pelle. The midfielder takes it for me.

Which 4m defenders are better than wisdom, duff and moore?
              Baines/Bertrand fixtures are awsome

nothing wrong with the front eight, maybe do what Rudi said and switch out dzeko / silva for kun / cheapie

Hah. In all seriousness, looks an interesting draft. Not sure I like the City attack double up though their fixtures do turn soon. If you are willing to give it a ride with Dzeko hope it works out for you this time around with that cruel mistress. I like the Mane inclusion, he's fun to watch. Could maybe spend a little more dosh in defense at the expense of downgrading a midfielder.

Aguero is the best Captain contender in any GW. Costa is very consistent but I don't think he can match Suarez's explosive calibre as he doesn't do much of assists & not very BP friendly. Aguero is the closest thing left for Suarez in PL & if he stays fit the whole season he definitely can match Suarez. I don't have Aguero but if one of my Strikers is injured or lose their form I'll get him in immediately. Hope this helps. 🙂

Forget about Suarez. That will probably never happen again in FPL. The guy was a freak in more ways then one.

This is now. This is 2014. And even if Costa just ticks over my FPL page says I've never been ranked this high so early on in 7 years of playing this nonsense.

And that is all that matters to me.

          Great choice!

          It will be either this

          Fabianski/Begovic
          Baines Ivanovic Clyne (Chambers Moore)
          Alexis Sterling Siggy Tadic (Boyd)
          Costa Welbeck Pelle

          0.7 million in the bank

          OR this for me

          Fabianski/Forster
          Baines Ivanovic Chambers (Wisdom Moore)
          Alexis Sterling Siggy Tadic (Boyd)
          Costa Welbeck Pelle

          1.7 in the bank

I know, and I've noticed you've had trouble picking your keepers whilst you've been on your WC 🙂

However, when you're 1m short of doing a transfer in a few weeks time, and you don't want to change any of your outfielders, I have a feeling you'll look at your 5m bench keeper and think "What on Earth was I thinking?" 😀

Yep, that's been the most troublesome area for me, after the Baines vs Ivan argument. Decided to go with both, at the end! 😀

That is why I'm keeping 1.2 million on the bench. In Team A, I don't think keeping Chambers makes sense! 😀

i had chambers but am not convinced by arsenal defence, 2 clean sheets? also he is on 4 yellows, will only cause pain, i've gone for wilson 4.5m and playing every game, no yellows and stoke which do quite well in defence.

interesting you are deciding to double up on alex and welbeck? your not an arsenal fan now are you?

            also thats a strong defence.

i think i prefer option A if i had to choose.

personally i'm going with ADM for my heavy hitter in MF.

4.5 for Arsenal defender is gold dust, even if he remains suspended for one game.

I think I might keep Fab this week and make the move next week 😀

              I'm not an Arsenal fan

I don't think ADM is worth the money, but go with your gut.

-I'm not a fan of the keepers to start with.

Yeah I'd agree with that. Cazorla not coming near my team unless he gets his no10 role back

You have a blind spot, then. Oxlade -Chamberlain really has to get his act together.

Not sure where Ox fits into a fully fit starting XI. I hope he makes it at the club, though.

He isn't but at 5 million less than Kun, he will score similar points given his fixtures, and that 5 million you get from him goes a long way in addressing the balance of your team.

        Name me five...no....three essentials lad.

Mugs game so far this year mate.

Sod fixtures. I'll happily sit and take Kuns 10pts this week and armchair watch the Welbeck 1pt week...

There are no essentials in the game as of now, except Costa.

I'm not WC'ing for one week, it's for the longer term. I know Aguero will score more than Welbeck this week, but doubt Welbeck will be far behind in the weeks to come 🙂

Berahino looks more a P.L threat than Welbeck atm

But seriously, although Welbeck's stats are good, that isn't the reason why he is so important.

With a spine of Old ManMert. Old man Artery. Wank Flamini. Overrated Wilshere.

Doos Arsenal haven't addressed their needs.

One decent win v Galatasaray and they and Welwank are the new status quo?

I didn't say that. But I do believe that they are horribly underrated. Not least by you. 🙂

Not underrated at all. Just the new Arsenal.

One decent win v Galatasaray doesn't change that.

On a purely FPL note Welwank may prove golden, but it is one gamble and shit English fwd I'm happy to look over....

            Quality mate.

            Pure quality.

Born and raised Manc. School of excellence before they became academies. Three years on the books and scored v Bolton in a 3-1 win.

If this were a who has a bigger shaft contest I'm comfortable.

Last 5 PL games between Citeh and Villa at Upton park.

    3-2
    0-1
    0-1
    1-0
    1-1

And no. None of those goals were Kun Aguero.

    😕
