Gylfi Sigurdsson And The Differential Alternatives

It’s come to that time when many Fantasy members are looking to get rid of Swansea’s Gylfi Sigurdsson. With nearly 50% ownership he is such a popular choice that even if he delivers, most of your mini-league rivals will have him. I certainly am finding this. I have somehow managed to climb to the top of my mini-league this week but I’m now looking for a differential option to cement my place at the top. Furthermore, Sigurdsson faces three of last year’s top six in the coming weeks, with two of them coming away from home. Swansea have been in poor form lately, only winning one of their last six league games. Here, I cast my eye over some differential options to the highly owned midfield maestro. All Fantasy Premier League (FPL) prices accurate as of October 28.

Victor Moses

FPL Price: 5.5

Ownership: 0.4%

Team: Stoke

One of my midfield punt picks this season, Victor Moses’ starting role at Stoke has allowed him to deliver points. He already has four assists to his name even after missing the opening couple of Gameweeks. His ability to beat opposition defenders is outstanding and he is pivotal in Stoke’s attacking moves. He faces West Ham and Burnley at home in the next three Gameweeks, with a trip to lacklustre Spurs sandwiched in between. He creates a goalscoring chance every 36 minutes and has nearly 90% passing accuracy all over the pitch. The stats speak for themselves; Moses is a solid option for that midfield role.

Morgan Amalfitano

FPL Price: 5.0

Ownership:0.1%

Team: West Ham

One of the players who I am considering for this Gameweek’s punt article, Amalfitano has flown under many people’s radars in an over-performing West Ham team. Since Gameweek 6 he has nailed down a starting role and turned in sturdy performances which have delivered a couple goals. He managed four goals and four assists last season for West Brom and I can see him easily beating that this time around. At only 5.0 he is a cut-price option and frees up cash to bring in in-form players like Sergio Aguero and Leighton Baines. His 0.1% ownership is horrendously low for the player he is and I cannot believe more people haven’t plumped for him. Not facing any of last season’s top five in his next eight fixtures gives him the chance to produce the goods.

Craig Gardner

FPL Price: 5.5

Ownership: 0.1%

Team: West Brom

The ever-consistent no-frills Craig Gardner is now playing at West Brom. He was an enticing prospect at Sunderland last year as he was on penalties. He no longer has that luxury but he is more key for the Baggies than he was for the Black Cats. He is their pendulum in the middle of the park and keeps things ticking over. He does take free-kicks and with Craig Dawson and Saido Berahino in the box he is likely to assist that way. West Brom tend to focus their attacks through the middle and Gardner’s through balls are a good outlet. He is yet to come up trumps with points but I reckon his time could come soon, making him another great differential.

Moussa Sissoko

FPL Price: 5.8m

Ownership: 1.5%

Team: Newcastle

When Sissoko arrived at Newcastle he couldn’t stop scoring. I remember owning him (although benching him) when he bagged a brace against Chelsea. He looks to be getting hungrier and hungrier this season, having 10 attempts on goal already. It may be a surprise to you, as it was to me, when I write that he is yet to score or assist this season despite playing every match. However, his performances have driven his side forward, even if they haven’t been FPL beneficial. However, with misfiring strikers, the goalscoring burden is falling on the midfield, with Gabriel Obertan and Sammy Ameobi scoring recently. His driving runs and bullet shots are always a threat and if he can exploit Liverpool’s defensive fragilities down the flank he could score big this weekend and then hit a purple patch.

Marouane Fellaini

FPL Price: 6.3m

Ownership: 0.2%

Team: Manchester United

Fellaini has rescued points for Van Gaal in recent weeks with that goal against West Brom and an assist last weekend against Chelsea. As an Everton fan I know what Fellaini is capable of and with a little trust he can reach the heights he did for the Toffees. Van Gaal is putting that faith in him. With his physical prowess he is always a threat and adds a different dimension to any team, especially a technical United side. A big fixture against Manchester City gives him the chance to prove himself with the potential of point returns for a third week in a row and then he welcomes a Crystal Palace side, who will struggle to handle him, to Old Trafford. In my opinion, the points are there, it is just whether Van Gaal chooses to play him.

Ryan Mason

FPL Price: 5m

Ownership: 0.0%

Team: Tottenham

The fact that Mason’s ownership is 0.0% is shocking. As of October 28 he was owned by just 1,121 FPL managers. At only 5.0 and playing for one of the top sides in the league he seems a bargain. His performances have really caught my eye since his introduction into the first team. Despite being a deep-lying midfielder he likes to push further upfield. He got his first assist last Gameweek, as well as a bonus point. He has had six shots since Pochettino placed his faith in him, as well as having a goal scoring chance every 60 minutes. I nearly picked him as my midfield punt last week and if I had he would have delivered. He is very much on my radar this week.

Just released the title makes it sound like an Icelandic new wave band from the early 1980s.

But to the personnel....some great options there and with my reluctance to get rid of the likes of Sterling I'm also looking to swap out Sigurdsson. Moses is someone I have my eye on...very reliable point scorer - bit boring - but great for the price.

Fellaini is the pick of the bunch imo, looks a real threat in the air with Di Maria's service into the box

I checked this morning...just 1,121 managers ...you have to go back a few decimal point places for that ownership to register in a game of more than 3m managers.

Don't rate Moses over Siggy, just as his assists all seem to have come in one go. He's also less of a goal threat imo.

    On Amalfitano, you say;

"Since Gameweek 6 he has nailed down a starting role" This only coincides with Kouyate being out, and i'm not sure he'll retain his pace now despite doing well.

Sissoko is just too hot and cold for me, with far more cold games.

    On Felllaini, you say:

"Fellaini has rescued points for Van Gaal in recent weeks" But the thing is United won't be in a position to need rescuing most weeks, and he'll be more restricted. I don't see him being value unless he's actually advanced like that one season for Everton. And with the other alternatives there, i don't think he will.

Like what i've seen of Mason though, seems dangerous with his runs in the box. And seems nailed on for now too. Could be one to watch.

One final thing on Siggy. I think the main reasons for selling is people wanting to afford the premium mids that are showing themselves now. And also in part due to the next couple fixtures. If you had him at 6m, i can't see why you'd sell though. He's still right up there, and sure attempts on goal will start coming in again.

That's what I'm thinking. Because I'm carrying Albrighton, it might be nice to have a 5th midfielder with some upside. I still think I'd play Siggy most weeks though

Other than Sterling to Sanchez or Siggy/Chadli to Ramsey there is nothing I can do with Costa/Kun/Berahino up top

Might wait for news on Mane, that Boyd to Mane move tempts me

When Theo is ready I hope to have 2 FTs so I can downgrade Mane to a cheapie, swap Chadli for Theo and possibly dump Clyne as well

Fair enough. Week in week out Siggy is a great option.

That said, with such high ownership if he is to blank for a couple weeks and you had someone with such low ownership he gets in a goal and an assist then that's 8 points on nearly 1/2 the FPL players

I wouldn't have any of them as a 4th midfielder. A 5th maybe (Moses or Amalfitano). Siggy for me is a 4th mid. I almost never bench him. With this list, I will be want to bench in many games and some are too expensive for the bench as well.

Who are you getting for him? Out of the similarly priced options I only see Mane or Chadli as options that could outscore him. I still think he will come on top though. Arsenal and Everton are not that scary defensively.

Considered him. He offers great set pieces, every time West Brom score from a dead ball he is likely to get an assist. However he isn't that effective in open play.

It's a hard one to call but it comes down to how often you thing West Brom would score from set pieces - i would go for someone else

He's the same price as Siggy, so no hit required. I got Siggy early, so it cost me £0.3m though but I've got more transfers than I know what to do with! His stats compare favourably to Siggy over the last 2 GWs though and my Everton friends assure me he will start.

I've looked at the stats and all roads seem to lead to Siggy - Downing. At 7% ownership, great fixtures, assist potential and goal threat all for 5.7m he seems ideal.

I had a look at Sigurdsson's shots in the box in the last four matches....couldn't find them because they don't exist. In fact I had trouble finding his one goal attempt in the last four matches too.

West ham are a team full of differentials with great upcoming fixtures
Their highest owned player is Downing at 7% lol

Thoughts on Cresswell? Tomkins is annoying me now

cresswell is a great option but a little overpriced - his crossing is much improved and he's racking up the assists but at something like 5.5....

I have him but his scares me... i know that if i captain him he'll do rubbish... so i'm keeping the captaincy away and just praying for a haul

      C LUKAKU FOR ME!

I can see Siggy being key this weekend. I had no idea how much reaction the idea of selling him would bring about. It's interesting to see everyone's opinions. It's even better that those who are selling all have different ideas....

Can see this site going mad on Saturday!

I might make a transfer to allow me to bench him but no way am I selling when I paid 6.0 for him

Swansea fixtures from GW13 = very tasty. Feeding a striker now in form....

    Likely to keep till wildcard.

I want to get Bony in and would rather have him than Siggy but there are so many good strike options so I understand y Siggy could be preferred to Bony

      This.

I got him pre-GW1 so I'm sticking until WC.

In stats downing beats siggy in all respects, except two important ones. His own shot conversion and that of the team mates he is setting up. I wouldn't necessarily expect the former to converge, but the latter should certainly fall in siggys case. He won't get 20+ assists this season I don't think.

Three reasons while I will never get rid of a healthy Siggy:

    1) He's value for money. I don't know what people expect from him but considering he's the least expensive of my front 7 who's likely to play in a given week I'm quite content to have him just ticking along. He's central to Swansea's attack (61.5% goal involvement) so if Swansea score he'll probably return and as much as I'm a big fan of using stats to analyse players (see earlier in this sentence) they don't mention things like him mucking it up and taking too heavy a touch when 1 on 1 with the keeper as he did against Stoke, which was as good, if not better, an opportunity as a shot in the box.
    2) He's one of the biggest fantasy man-crushes I've ever had and as much as it may be sentimental nonsense, I'm loyal to what he's done for me in the past and I just feel better for having him in my team.
    3) My team name will be completely redundant if I get rid of him.

Sorry sorry mate but all this mids r no go 4 me. Very bad punts. U could change the article name to: who is not a Siggy alternative. All this have the potential for failed punts.

Not to be the case I am only critisizing I am gonna throw a name there: Arfield. Check his stats, fixtures, position and assurance of starts. Cheers

all punts have the chance of failing - that;s y they r punts...

Arfield is a decent shout but not against Arsenal

some good shouts for me but its down to Downing on Siggy for me. I am just curious about your reasoning - everyone from your ML has him so why not keep and basically play with the rest of your team for a win? You have than "only" 10 player spots where your rivals can outscore you... how big is your lead? I am in the similar situation as you are and still undecided what to do with Siggy...

      there's certainly plenty of choice

I'm leading by only a few points. Everyone who is near me as the same midfield apart from me (I have Hazard instead of Fabregas). It's so hard to pull away but now I have a few points cushion I'm taking a punt on someone instead of Siggy to try and pull away

Really like your articles. The stats certainly point towards a Siggy to Downing move. Who are you picking yourself? 🙂

I really thought riyad mahrez would pop up in this article, he is on fire atm and with a bit of luck will explode soon. But I love your mason find, I too was considering him prior to this week, he's given significant permission to jpin attacks whilst capoue shields the back 4

with that ownership Mason is very tempting

I picked Mahrez as one of my midfield punts early in the season but he failed to deliver. He lacks that cutting edge for me.

Wish i'd seen this when transferring out Dyer this week. Opted for Diame. I have him and Downing as joint 4th place mids - like to have 3 starters and two rotating/dropping to the bench when playing 433.

Nice article, and good discussion. Shocked not to see Oscar mentioned anywhere. 3.2% ownership, and with at least 1.9itb (I have 2.1) he has to be the top choice.

FWIW I also have Downing 5th mid but don't fancy him at Stoke. Oscar vs QPR is massively appealing, and I don't need a FT next week so can save it then instead.

The only downside is losing 0.4 tv on Siggy, but it could pay off handsomely as a diff. Been wrestling with the trade all week!
