Attacking Potential

The objective of this exercise is to predict the attacking potential per team and their key player in the next six fixtures. The idea comes from a previous article submitted by Footballoholic called “Best chance of goals over the next six”, which looked at the goals conceded by each team’s next six opponents. This article will use this research and combine it with the goalscoring form of each team.

Attacking Potential Explained

My  calculations are based on the average goals scored (GS)  home and away in the past six matches as well as the average goals conceded, once again differentiated for home and away. I’ve then combined these to find an attacking potential rating over the next six matches. In addition I’ve looked at the key players for each side, based on their goal involvement.

Conclusions

Liverpool’s Sterling has been sold heavily in recent weeks. But this research suggests sellers are being too hasty. On the basis of opposition and attacking form Sterling is still set to be involved in around a goal a game over the next six games. Manchester City look the best bet for goals over the coming weeks, with Sergio Aguero the best option. The Argentine looks an ideal captain candidate for the foreseeable future.

As with Footballoholic’s research this analysis also suggests that Chelsea may not score as many goals as people believe. Costa and Fabregas are ranked low here in spite of good fixtures on paper. Instead, Southampton’s Pelle could emerge as a better source of points despite a dire run of fixtures.

Gilles I am not spécial I love Ireland !!

Excellent follow up Footballoholic's research. Starting to really regret selling Sterling now.

Been wondering how to fit him back in once Sturridge is back for this reason.

That said, he's still the #1 sold player this international break and should get down to 8.3 by break's end if FPL towers are in an equitable mood... and then it's decision time if Sturridge plays 90.

Without Sturridge, he still has a lot of goal involvement but there's less goals without Sturridge and thus it isn't that enticing in my opinion.

I don't buy that Liverpool stat - the evidence of your own eyes tells you Liverpool are struggling at the moment - don't care what the stats sya

Some very surprising results there - gives me cause to rethink one or two things. Always a sign of good research and an interesting subject matter. Very nice.

Wow. Surprising with Stoke's fixtures. This kind of analysis could be really useful, it would be great if someone tracked how successful its predictions are.

        "Sample Size"

scoring 8 goals in one match is always going to skew any kind of short term analysis in their favour 🙂

This is a really good article.

Would love the number of goals teams have scored next to the players' goal involvement... in fact will work on that and reply to this message myself....

      Sergio Agüero 55% 6.3 (22 team goals)

      Raheem Sterling 54% 5.6 (14 team goals)

      Saido Berahino 54% 5.3 (13 team goals)

      Graziano Pellè 43% 4.8 (23 team goals)

Gylfi Sigurdsson 53% 4.2 (15 team goals, so he's been involved in 8, right?)

      Dusan Tadic 35% 3.8 (23 team goals)

      Nacir Chadli 50% 3.8 (14 team goals)

      Alexis Sánchez 53% 3.8 (19 team goals)

Angel Di María 47% 3.3 (17 team goals)

Leighton Baines 44% 3.3 (20 team goals; 44% goal involvement for a defender is insane)

Diego Costa 36% 3.2 (28 team goals, lower % involvement than some but team scores more goals than any other team)

      Cesc Fábregas 36% 3.2 (28 team goals)

Looking at this, the standouts are
Aguero, Costa, Alexis, ADM, Sterling (if, and only if, Sturridge is healthy), Fabregas, Siggy, Baines

Pelle/Tadic are there too but I feel the 8 goal match distorts things a bit as that is a trend outlier for how much they will usually score

So, not that surprising in a lot of ways, thoguh GB's point that Cisse has 100% goal involvement when playing so far is worth a remembering.

Cisse's involvement in team goals whilst on the pitch is 100% 😉 Surely involvement whilst off the pitch is a little unfair.

Costa should be higher. But because he hasn't played much recently this affects his goal involvement. Another case for having goal involvement whilst on the pitch instead.

Attacking involvement is from the whole 11 gwks.
Si not too problematic on Costa's case.
On Cisse's on the other hand...

I think that this is a really good article but I find it misleading. I think that you should have done the stats for the last four weeks, not the whole season so far, as it would give a more up-to-date and accurate view of the current situation therefore being more useful. For example, in the last four weeks ADM has been involved in 66.7% of United's goals and Sanchez in about 88% of Arsenal's. These figures are vastly different from the ones above. Good article though!

Nice work in conjunction with the earlier article. Cheers for doing the cross referencing with the opponents as well.

I did comment above that maybe last six GWs would be the better gauge since form is more important than fixtures but ideally you would like to have both.
