Quick Guide To The Winter Wildcard

January in the Fantasy Premier League game is wildcard time when this chilly month offers us the chance to refresh our sides and clear out the deadwood. This guide aims to offer some key advice on getting the most out of your winter wildcard.

When can I play my winter wildcard?

  • After GW 20 deadline From 11.30 on January 1st
  • After GW 21 deadline From 11.30 on January 10th
  • After GW 22 deadline From 11.30 on January 17th
  • After GW 23 deadline From 11.30 on January 31st

Of course you can activate your wildcard any day up until the 7th of February when Gameweek 24 kicks off. However,  to make the best use of price increases it is generally best to activate the wildcard as early in the week as possible , preferably on one of the above dates, or the following day.

When does the winter transfer window open and close?

Clubs may begin buying players from the first of January, and the transfer window closes on the second of February this season. It normally closes at the end of January, however since that falls on a weekend the window is remaining open a couple of extra days.

When is the best week to play the wildcard?

in an ideal world the best time to activate the wildcard is the last week it can be used, so preferably it should be activated once matches have started on the 31st of January. There are several advantages to wildcarding in that particular week

  • The transfer window closes during that week, so you have more information to work with
  • More opportunity to take advantage of any double Gameweek news or postponements which, being January is a distinct possibility
  • Easier to plan for the rest of the season as there are less weeks left

Of course we don’t live in an ideal world, and much depends on the state of your own teams, if your team is creaking at the seams then maybe an early wildcard with the intention of gaining a head start could work out well. There is nothing like a poor Gameweek and a few injuries to make hitting that wildcard button seem like a great idea

So really there is no right and wrong answer as to which Gameweek it should be played in. What is important is that you act decisively, activate the card early in the week to gain the price rises and have a decent plan in mind

Wildcard mistakes

  • I’m bored, I think I will play my wildcard this week
  • Someone in your team is injured on the Friday, so you activate your wildcard at the end of the week and not the start, giving no time to plan and missing out on price rises
  • Playing the wildcard and removing all your players, only to realise you still want some of them, and have to buy them back at a higher price
  • Making transfers but forgetting to hit the wildcard button and suddenly realise you have spent 40 points
  • Activating the wildcard in rage, because of a poor Gameweek. Make the decision calmly and rationally

Random thoughts

This season there is a two-week break between Gameweeks 22 and 23,  which will be a tempting time to play the wildcard as it gives so much more time to tinker with the team. If you are planning to use your wildcard late then now is the time to save a free transfer. Having two frees will lessen the temptation to wildcard should you suffer an injury or two.

Conclusion

The winter wildcard can act as a great springboard for the rest of the season, it can make or break your fantasy season, so use it wisely.

Thanks for this. Helps settle some of those initial thoughts about the wildcard, particularly those pitfalls to avoid. Everytime I make the transfer out a player I then have to get back in within the same wildcard for more money. Hopefully I'll learn this year.

The first WC I ever played I transferred out all my players. Then I realized I had to buy some of them back at a higher price than what I paid originally.

Somehow the game was "easier" 7 years ago...

I think the Aguero factor merits a mention. If he is indeed back for the Arsenal game on 18 January he may start increasing in price before the GW22 deadline.

And given his penchant for scoring on his comeback and Arsenal's current penchant for comedy defending, I'm not sure I'd want to leave it to the following gameweek to get him in.

He'll be price protected for a while after he returns though.

There are couple more questions that I think we should know the answer before hitting the button:
    - When will Aguero be back?
    - How's Walcott performing?
    - What are Tony Pulis preferred back 4?
    - How do Newcastle and CPL look under the new reign? Is it worth investing?
    - Would Silva extend his form with strikers upfront?

Personally I'm waiting on returns from injury from this motley crew that is Aguero, Sturridge, Di Maria & Walcott before I pull the trigger.

The article was not intended to be about specific players, Personally i will be bringing Aguero in using normal transfers, if he is back for GW22 there is time to make arrangements, although i may well wait to make sure he does not break down again

"Making transfers but forgetting to hit the wildcard button and suddenly realise you have spent 40 points"

Actually it is still possible to play wildcard by making another transfer, so no hits will be recorded.

With so many transferring in kane and everyone in my mini league having him would it be completely foolish not to get him seeing as I am top of the league.
Thinking benteke to him.also have Austin and Costa.

Great article, thanks Triggerlips, however I would like to share one additional reason why I always try and hold onto my winter wildcard as long as possible. The cup competitions.

The League Cup semi's between Liverpool / Chelsea and Spurs / Sheffield Utd will conclude between GW22 and GW23. So by the start of GW23 (31st Jan) we will know the finalists.

The League Cup final takes place on Sunday 1st March (GW27) and takes priority that weekend.

The fixtures currently being scheduled include that weekend:

    Liverpool vs Man City
    Leicester vs Chelsea
    QPR vs Spurs

By GW23 if Chelsea and Spurs make the final (as seems most likely), I would already be thinking about exit strategies for my current triple Chelsea and double Spurs players to make sure I can field at least 11 players in GW27 and my wildcard would be my exit strategy.

Interestingly the FA cup this year is clear for Premier League teams with no possible fixture clashes until the semi final weekend and so I think there will be a real lack of double game weeks this season. In previous years there have been PL games scheduled on Round 5 and QF weekend.

FAC Round 3 - This weekend (blank PL games)
FAC Round 4 -,24th Jan (blank PL games)
FAC Round 5 - 14th Feb (blank PL games)
QF - 7th March (blank PL games)
    SF - GW32

Sorry for the long post but I hope this helps somebody or at least provides some food for thought.

Looking for an improvement over Clichy that can play for the rest of the season barring injuries.

At the moment my defense is:
    Courtois, 4.0
    Clyne, Clichy, Taylor, Coloccini, Hutton

Doubling up on Chelsea is not an option and I would rather not double up on Southampton. So what are my options?
Obvious choices are Baines, Koscielny, Mertesacker, Skrtel, Zabaleta and Kompany, but they all have their issues. Keeping Clichy is possible if he becomes a secure starter.

    Who would you choose?
