Foxes in the Box vs Long Rangers Update

Happy New Year! I just wanted to post an updated set of statistics exploring the best foxes in the box, who like to shoot from close range, and how they compare with long-range shooters. This is part of an ongoing series – here’s a link to the previous article. Hopefully now that we’re over the halfway point in the season a clearer picture will start to emerge as to the best attacking players in Fantasy Football.

FOX IN THE BOX STATISTICS

Top of the pile on goal attempts so far this season is Sergio Aguero (74), followed by Graziano Pelle & Charlie Austin (73), Wilfried Bony comes next (66), followed by Romelu Lukaku (56) and then Diego Costa (55).

Attempts inside the box look like this: Pelle (63), Aguero (59), Austin and Costa (47), Robin van Persie (44) and then Bony (43)

Leading the way on goals are Aguero & Costa (14), Austin (12), Bony & Papiss Cisse (9), Pelle, Saido Berahino, Diafra Sakho, Van Persie & Wayne Rooney (8)

LONG RANGERS STATISTICS

Yaya Toure, Christian Eriksen, Stewart Downing and Kevin Mirallas have scored the most goals from outside the box (3)

Out of those four, Eriksen has had the most attempts from outside the box (37), closely followed by Toure (36), then Mirallas (24) and Downing (23)

Toure’s shot accuracy (combined shots both inside and outside the box) is 31.7%, with Downing on 30.8% and Eriksen and Mirallas on 25.9% and 25.8% respectively.

Impressively, Toure and Downing’s accuracy is not too dissimilar to that of Christian Benteke, Danny Ings and Diafra Sakho and is only slightly lower than Wilfried Bony (36.4%) and Charlie Austin’s (39.7%). Graziano Pelle is proving a poor finisher, though, with around three quarters of his shots failing to hit the target – maybe he needs some shooting practice.

Here’s a little more food for thought: Both Mirallas and Andy Carroll have had the same number of shots (31), with Carroll having fired most of his from inside the box (25), yet they have the same shot accuracy percentage.

Here’s the link to the full table.

Great update. Shots in the box is still the key stat that guides my decisions.

Saints, Chelsea and Stoke will all likely feature in my wc defence, along with Sunderland or Villa and West Brom, who will surely see an upturn under TP

This article should be members only IMO. It gives away too much info to nonmembers

Thanks Jonty, I agree. Although I will think twice about Pelle. Maybe he needs some new shooting boots.

This probably highlights why a Sunderland goalkeeper is a good option - not conceding that many goalscoring opportunities in the box but allowing plenty of pot shots which lead to save points.

Sunderland with most shots conceded out of the box, yet not in the top 5 for shots conceded inside the box. Helps to explain all the GK saves.

Some really nice work here. Cheers. Swansea are looking pretty dire for shots conceded -- might hold onto Downing for a bit longer.

Spurs were the real surprise for me, with so many attempts conceded in the box compared to out. Mason and Capoue clearly need to track back deeper.
