Scout Scribbles – Townsend Hands Spurs Advantage

Andros Townsend slots home a spot-kick to give Spurs a narrow first-leg lead over Sheffield United in the Capital One Cup semi-final. Edin Dzeko and Stevan Jovetic grab a goal apiece as City sweep aside Hamburg, Marouane Chamakh is on course to turn out for Palace this weekend, whilst Swansea edge closer to snapping up Kyle Naughton from Spurs.

TOWNSEND’S SPOT KICK BLUNTS THE BLADES

Mauricio Pochettino made five changes to his Tottenham starting XI for their Capital One Cup semi-final first-leg clash with Sheffield United last night. Nacer Chadli was absent for personal reasons, meaning that Andros Townsend was handed a chance on the flank, with Harry Kane once again fielded in ‘the hole’ behind Emmanuel Adebayor, who was replaced by Roberto Soldado midway through the second half. After being frustrated for the majority of the match, Spurs finally found the breakthrough, with Townsend giving his side a 1-0 advantage to take into the second leg from the penalty spot.

Post-match, Pochettino was forced to defend his decision to hand Adebayor the captaincy armband for the encounter after the Togo international was booed by some of the home crowd:

“He is one of the three captains. You forget [I named them] at the beginning of the season. I think it is not the moment to explain why. When I took a decision it was seven months ago, I took the decision that Kaboul, Lloris and Adebayor were three captains, seven months ago. It is a long, long time ago that happened. I had no doubts [about making him captain]. I didn’t hear [any bad reaction]. I am focused on the game.”

The Scout Says: Townsend has now registered two goals and an assist in his last five appearances in all competitions, and with Erik Lamela’s calf injury expected to keep him out until mid-February, the England international could be set to profit further over the next few Gameweeks. Indeed, the winger might need to continue that form if Spurs’ future performances continue in the same vein as last night’s, with the north Londoners managing just two shots on target across the 90 minutes against their League One opponents. With both Adebayor and Soldado once again flattering to deceive, and the fans clearly gunning for the former, Kane’s 36.7% ownership will be hopeful that the youngster will be shifted further forward in the coming weeks as he looks to continue the form that has produced six goals and three assists in his last seven league outings.

DZEKO AND JOVETIC ON TARGET IN CITY FRIENDLY

Edin Dzeko and Stefan Jovetic were both handed starts and grabbed a goal apiece as Man City overcame Hamburg 2-0 in a friendly in Abu Dhabi. Manuel Pellegrini fielded a backline of Bacary Sagna, Dedryck Boyata, Eliaquim Mangala and Aleksander Kolarov for the encounter, whilst Sergio Aguero was introduced up front with 25 mins left on the clock as he continues to build up his fitness.

However, it wasn’t all smooth sailing for the victors, with Frank Lampard forced off after 20 minutes with a hip problem originally sustained in the warm-up, though Pellegrini played down the problem post-match:

“He was injured in the warm up and then we took him off in the game as a precaution.”

The Scout Says: With Aguero back from injury and Wilfried Bony recently snapped up by the Citizens, it would be fair to say that the pressure was on Jovetic and Dzeko to produce yesterday despite the insignificance of the fixture. The two strikers gave their manager a timely reminder of their capabilities and if either manages to produce again in their FA Cup tie with Middlesborough on Saturday, Pellegrini may well have a partner for Aguero ahead of the following weekend’s vital trip to Chelsea. Whilst the Argentine’s starting role looks untouchable so long as he can remain fit, Jovetic and Dzeko’s lingering presence is likely to have an impact on Bony’s pitch time once he returns from the Africa Cup of Nations, and this continuous competition for minutes could well deprive managers of a reliable mid-price forward option in City’s ranks even if Pellegrini does begin to favour a front two set-up once again.

CHAMAKH TIPPED FOR COMEBACK

Reports indicate that Crystal Palace forward Marouane Chamakh is expected to return to action for his side this weekend in their FA Cup clash with Southampton.

The Scout Says: Could Alan Pardew be set for another reshuffle in formation on the back of yesterday’s news? The Eagles boss deployed a 4-3-3 set-up against Spurs in his first league match in charge, then switched to 4-4-2 for last weekend’s trip to Burnley. With his side trailing at half-time, however, Pardew then changed things up again, moving to a 4-1-4-1 formation which in turn sparked a successful comeback. Glenn Murray and new signing Yaya Sanogo have both started one match apiece up front and Chamakh may come into contention as his new manager looks for a consistency of both selection and formation. Certainly, with Palace set on all-out attack mode right now, their budget offensive options appear to be worth considering, though Jason Puncheon and Dwight Gayle’s form and guarantee of starts regardless of formation ensures that they remain the prime assets for the time being.

NAUGHTON MOVE To SWANS NEARS COMPLETION

Reports yesterday claimed that Spurs defender Kyle Naughton could seal a move to Swansea as soon as today, after the right back apparently agreed personal terms and passed a medical with the Welsh side.

The Scout Says: At just 4.3 in the Fantasy Premier League game, Naughton’s signature could present managers with a cut-price option in a Swans rearguard who face potentially prosperous encounters with Sunderland, West Brom and Burnley in their next five. The Welsh outfit have tallied a respectable eight clean sheets thus far this season and, despite shipping 11 in just their last four, could now receive a new wave of attention if Naughton’s move does indeed go through. The 26-year-old  certainly looks set to come straight into the reckoning for a starting berth, with Garry Monk seemingly losing confidence in regular right-back Angel Rangel in recent times – the Spaniard was an unused substitute last time out, with Dwight Tiendalli taking his place in the starting XI against Chelsea.

Just when we thought there aren't enough good picks from Chelsea, here comes Cauadrado.

Going to be FPL Gold if he comes. Will probably come in at the same price as Willian as well. 7.5-8?

Thinking of taking a -4 this GW (one week fun with Giroud and Di Maria coming in) - then wildcarding GW after.

Rest of team is OK - but with bad defence for this GW.

    Sensible idea?

    Or just WC now?

Top Tips For Climbing The Rankings

Following Triggerlips recent article about climing up the rankings post January I thought I’d use this morning’s daily hot topic to find out where you are in the rankings and what strategy you are deploying to get a better overall rank by Gameweek 38? Hopefully you will be able to pass on some good advice.

Here’s a quick reminder of his key tips and a link to the article

    http://www.fantasyfootballscout.co.uk/2015/01/21/the-real-fantasy-football-season-starts-now/

Top 1k….. Pick generic team and let others take the risk
1-5k ,……..Pick one or two differentials, and look for safe weeks to take a captaincy punt
5-10k………as above with a few more captaincy punts thrown in
10-30k…….Look to leave out one of the highly owned stars that may falter, i.e. Diego Costa, Alexis Sanchez or Eden Hazard
30k plus ….Leave out Aguero and structure your team to take advantage of the extra funds; if he falters you will rapidly rise the ranks.

    I’ll go first .

I’m in the top 1-5K camp, and have been rattling around this group since Gameweek 11. A good run of gameweeks has seen me enter the top 1K, a bad run has seen my skirt the edges of this group. I agree with Triggerlips tactics for my group and it’s a key reason why I have not tumbled out of the top 5K.

Keeping a close eye on the generic top 10K is key. My first wildcard was focused on this and got me into the top 1K, after that I drafted in Harry Kane, Charlie Austin and David Silva with an eye on their top 10K ownership and they’ve helped me stay with the pack.

I’ve also looked to take a few punts as Triggerlips recommends, and by punts I mean low owned players in the top 10K. This is the area I need to improve on as Benteke was simply not up to the task of chief differential over Christmas. Now wildcarded I’m placing my faith in the top 10K template, plus Puncheon and one other. Despite getting only 41 from the first week of my winter wildcard its worth noting that I had 23 pts on my bench. Looks like I got the right players, but to paraphrase Eric Morcambe, not necessarily in the right order. 😉

My next step following this strategy is considering one of Austin or Silva. Well owned players in the top 10K that I think will decline over the next few gameweeks. In their place Defoe, Bojan, Cazorla and Oscar are among those I have my eye on to be the next rare punts in my template top 10K side. Its tricky enough staying in the top 5K let alone pushing on.

For that price I'm happy to keep - but I'd also want to bench for tough games - we saw how that went earlier this month. There are not alot of good striker options currently but when there are I may move on.

Looking at my WC this week. Sticking with most big guns but looking for a differential defence and 4/5th mid. Currently 27k but chasing a ML deficit of 35 ish.

Im 30k plus and there is no way I will go without Aguero. The reason I am 30K plus is because i have went 20 GWs without Sanchez. OR is a bonus to me, what I care about is winning my MLs and i cannot do that without Aguero

I don't see why anyone in top 1 shouldn't take as much risk as someone in 30k and vice-versa. Everyone is pretty much chasing until you are close to winning the game....even then you are. It's a mythical concept developed because of the lust around ranking.

Nice post. Am in the 1-5k too and have a pretty template team from 2 weeks ago.
That template seems to have changed somewhat as WCs have been used and fixtures shifted.
I am contemplating going without Costa and shifting funds to rest of team... Has a big swing one way or the other 😉

I was without Costa this week and had a poor gameweek rank but even though his overall top 10K ownership is high most in that group will prefer to captain another and often Hazard. This makes Costa currently not essential. Aguero however will be captained by most owners - that makes him a different proposition. The trend I'm keeping an eye on is Costa captaincy in the top 10K - when that gets to 50% or higher then going without Costa becomes a huge risk for those like us in the top 10K.

        Good luck btw.

Agree 100%. Im in the same place as you and Smartypants top 10k data is essential to understand the risk or otherwise of not having a top 10k essential player. My view is they arent essential UNLESS people captain them as per your inference above.

I'm dropping like a stone, been in the top 1k for a while but now I'm quite a way out of it. A lack of Costa is my main issue, I think I'll look to get him in ASAP as when he scores more than one goal (which is inevitable when he's not in my team) it's a guaranteed red arrow for me. It's the boring, conservative move but I think it has to be done to avoid slipping even further behind the top 1k.

I think I can be a good example of what happens when you DON'T follow this tactic. Before Christmas I was around 1.9k and really wanted to push into the top 1k/top 500 or so over Christmas. I decided to try and throw in quite a lot of differentials (inc captains) and purposely avoid the big name players, since then (6Gw's), I have plummeted to around rank 60K.

Moral of this was too many differentials are not worth the risk when you are up in the high ranks. I should have kept a mostly generic team as this article suggests.

If you're in the "Look to leave out one of the highly owned stars that may falter" group then leaving out Costa might be a good move.

After all, there were a lot of logical reason for doing so last week and they still remain this week, despite his haul on the weekend. That haul makes it less likely that other will stick to the plan though, with a few people who traded out last week bringing him back in at a loss this week. In that case sticking with your Costa-less side might not be such a bad idea.

This is what I was trying to get at above but you said much more eloquently.

He's about at the top of his conversion rate right now. Probably going to keep up a pace a bit lower than what he's done in the whole of the season so far. In which case he is easily passable.

I'd at least leave it for another week given that he's up against top opposition next. He can only do so much damage against City and it will give you another week to see how the rest of your team performs.

I think the damage of not owning Costa last week was amplified by the lack of returns from any other heavy hitter. That won't happen every week.

I don't think it's that tricky at all. My team has beaten the top 1000 in 7 out of the last 8 GWs, often by a considerable margin.

Do you want to win or do you want to secure a top 2000/5000 finish, that's the question to ask. If you want to win play with freedom and no fear, trust your judgement and live with it if you end up with a 20k ranking. If you want to stay in the top 2k/5k play safe but don't expect to win, Simple.

Of course as this is my first FPL season and I am just learning how the game works (which I think I'm getting the hang of now) I have less 'investment' in my ranking. But I would never play to preserve a position anything below 1st myself. It's only a game, why not try to win it?

Looks good, my team is currently set up for just the next game week, as I still have the Jan WC in hand.

                Lloris;
                Mertesacker, Ivanović, Bertrand;
                Sánchez (c), Hazard, Di María, Eriksen;
                Costa, Kane, Ings.

                Given;
                Sigurðsson, Wisdom, Hutton.

I think you're wrong about the top 1k strategy. The current top10 is very template, which gives a good chance to those who play their own way to climb up the ranks. Instead of comparing to what the others in the top10k own, just decide your own system to pick the players who are likely to score the most and follow it without knee jerking.

I must admit as a player with just one top 1K finish I'm not qualified to offer advice to the real elite top players. Triggerlips is though as he's been there a fair few times.

I'd definitely like to hear more from those with top 1K finishes to see how they rise up the rankings. My assumption is that you have to take some risks - particularly with captaincy to rise up.

If you're in the top 1k then you don't need to take as many risks as someone further back.
There's a lot of misunderstanding about the notion of risk and the point at which you take decisions.

In the top 1k you need a template team and rely on your captain choice as your risk to drive you up.

        How do you define "risk".

Wasn't captaining a young striker who gets relatively few shots in the box a risk? 452 of the top 1000 did that last week. Wasn't captaining a player that had only played 24 minutes back from an inury he couldn't possibly be 100% recovered from a risk? 280 of the top 1000 did that last week.

Compared to those I wouldn't say that captaining the PLs top goalscorer playing against a team he scored a hat-trick against last time he played against them was a risky choice. I'd have said it was sensible and good judgement. But only 52 of the top 1000 did it.

Fear of what everyone else is doing can make you take very bad decisions. The risk of those bad decisions is only ameliorated by the fact that others are doing the same. But you'll never win anything playing that way.

As long as they allow you an escape route. I might go with Cazorla to start with but will want to reserve funds to allow a switch to ADM if he kicks on.

As a result I can't afford puncheon and will play JWP

On further thought, this probably comes down to the point at which you take your risk.

Putting Costa and Aguero up front is a sensible strategy because they are most likely to score the most points. If you're in the top 1k you can afford to wait and see how others perform. Take Defoe, for instance. If he scores a hat trick in the next match then you might drop Costa to get him in. Very few others near your rank would have had Defoe so you haven't lost anything.

At the same time, you need to use your judgment. If everybody is jumping on a bandwagon that you think will run out of steam then you can sit smugly knowing that you don't have a low scoring, high ownership player. Take ulloa, as another example. Many jumped on this bandwagon early in the season in wildcards which wrecked the balance of their team.

So it really comes down to : a high rank gives you the luxury of time to wait and see how assets perform before jumping on the bandwagon.

Torresmagic offers a very astute observation I think. Because then it becomes an exercise of judgement. Where you see weaknesses it means that in your judgement there are better decisions to be made.

I don't know where to get the top 50 stats and I'm not going to trawl through the teams 1 by 1. But as an exercise I have had a look at some possible weaknesses in the top 1000.

          1. The assumption that Southampton will be as good defensively in the 2nd half of the season as they were in the first. Also applies to Chelsea but with less reason because Chelsea have a track record that goes back further.
          2. The assumption that Aguero will be as good when he returns as before he was injured. Bit risky to challenge this assumption though because he may well be. More broadly this is the assumption that players will perform similarly in the 2nd half of the season to what they did in the first half. Are there any players you think will improve? Decline?
          2. The assumption that 3-4-3 is the best team structure. Almost all of them do it most weeks unless a striker is injured and Boyd comes off the bench.
          3. The tendency to play safe on captain selections - meaning they will mostly look at captain polls on sites like this and be influenced by them. Funnily enough, the times when there has been the most consensus amongst the top 1000 have tended to be the times when they got it most wrong over the last 8 weeks or so.
          4. Lack of deep knowledge about specific PL teams. Most of them have the stats and the TV but few will actually go to games and even if they do they will only have in depth knowledge of one team. If you know one club well that gives you an edge where selecting their players is concerned. If you have friends that are follow another club closely and go to games, listening to them can give you an additional edge. It's about moving from generic knowledge to specific knowledge.
          5. The tendency to spread coverage. Apart from 3 Chelsea the typical top 1000 team has only one player from any club. That's safer in terms of spreading risk but there could be opportunities from doubling or tripling up on a team (Arsenal?) at the right time.

A lot of these are debatable - they could equally be regarded as strengths. But there is a tendency to be conservative amongst the top players. If you are able to take a different view on one or two things early enough and trust your judgement that could give you the little edge you need.

You are a better FPL player than I am so you don't need any advice from me (apart from about Chelsea who I almost certainly have more in-depth knowledge of than you do). But I have found the exercise interesting to do anyway.

Great comment. Point 5 is something I'm particularly looking at as its a tactic that worked well last season (eg getting Sturridge and Suarez, Yaya and Silva/Aguero or this season Pelle and Tadic - worked well at first). Its a key reason I'm considering ditching Silva for Cazorla.

Same idea but I will be more radical. Giroud instead of Aguero and keep Silva. 😉

Regards Cazorla, Wenger has been under enormous pressure from Arsenal fans about the way he sets up the team. ArsenalfanTV has some really funny after match interviews if you haven't seen them.

              http://arsenalfantv.com/

So now that he has finally moderated his style and set Arsenal up in an away game the same way he has complained about Mourinho doing for years I can't see him wanting to disturb a team that played so well.

I think Cazorla will play for as long as he retains form and that Ozil and Walcott will be eased in slowly via cup games and sub appearances. And Oxlade will be affected by their return more than Cazorla.

Yep. Forget your ranking and aim to get as many points as you can.

This is my first season playing FPL so I can't speak from FPL experience. But I can speak from life experience. The moment you start worrying about your position relative to others is the moment you start making compromised decisions. Almost inevitably you'll regret them in the end.

I have no objection to looking at what others are doing. You might learn something. That's why I come on here. But once you allow fear of being different to take over you may as well hand your team over to the autobot on FFF, set it to track the top 1000 and come back at the end of the season to look at your 10k or 20k ranking.

The fun, and the challenge of this game is to use your own judgement. There are things to learn - like how to structure a FPL squad (I had no idea about that at all when I began and my initial squad was a nightmare selection with 13 pts Sigurdsson on the bench!) - but once you have the mechanics sorted you should develop your own style. Shouldn't you?

Loved the way you summed it up. Had Costa from GW 1 then dumped him for a long period although everyone had him. Brought him back for a bit, then took him out on the WC last week. Backfired a little in hindsight, but still happy with how I'm set up.

Worst feeling is when you had a player in mind, but backed out because people advised you against it. And he ends up scoring well.

This way, even if it doesn't work out, at least there's no regrets.

All the best with the rest of the season buddy!

Another member of the top 20 club chiming in here. IMO when the FFS captain choice is at a large consensus (2/3rds or more) go with it, the risk is too big otherwise. But if it's spread out a bit, say 4 players at 80%+ ownership and ~20% captaincy and you own all of them, captain your differential midfielder.

Think about it, if it works out you gain double and as you own all the others your chance there is a lot of mitigation against the captaincy choices of the crowd and you likely lose out much less.

Dropped from 13K to 23K this week by doing Costa > Aguero, but I might still only accommodate one of them on WC. It feels like the best way to maximise value from elsewhere in the squad, especially when I still don't think I'll captain Costa often.

This is essentially my strategy at all times and I spout this quite often on here in one form or another.

Debate about captaincy differentials/risks - captain who you think will score most.
Debate about doubling up on a defence or benching one of them - play who you think will score most.
Debate about playing a goalkeeper against one of your strikers - play you think will score the most

        Etc.

I realise there are nuances around risk and reward but ultimately I think you should make your decisions 'in a vacuum' and then live or die by them.

The angle I take on this is the prep i do in the first half of the season should mean a healthy team which means I don't really have to look for differentials. The differentials a large team value gives, when the winter wildcard comes along, is that it gives you the chance to add another big hitter that your average Joe can't afford. Therefore my differential tends to be the addition of a Silva or ADM where others have Puncheon whilst maintaining a healthy balanced squad.

My seasons therefore tend to follow the same pattern, slow and steady leading up to the winter wildcard them explosive post wc as I make good gains on those in front. This season I'm currently around the 15k mark and would expect to be top 10k by the end. Team value is 109m.

It is important but matters less this season as the price rises are curtailed by way FPL measures the system (it changed this season). Its harder to predict but also we are seeing far less of the big 0.3 in a week rises. This time last year I was around 108-9m ...this year I've got 105-6 or so.

      Top 1K here.

I am probably not going to change my strategy at all - pick the players I think will do well based on the next 3 fixtures and transfer my way into and out of trouble with varying degrees of success after that.

Inevitably most of these players are already part of the template. Therefore, success will have to be based on nailing the captain choice.

I have an additional WC, so have the benefit of being able to structure my Jan WC for a shorter period of time defensively e.g. till maybe week 30ish.

I broke into the top 100 GW17 and have dropped back a little but still maintaining top 200. One of the reasons I'm so high up was ditching Costa in GW9 even though he was highly owned and a big captain choice. Luckily I got him back a couple weeks ago because I thought he was in form again. I don't plan on playing it safe in terms of getting all the highly owned players (I'm probably losing Kane on my WC and might get Puncheon and Pelle) but will stay cognizant of the popular captain choices since those are what would hurt me the most. It's my first full season of non-casual FPL so would be thrilled to finish top 1k. Closer to the end I'd probably play a blocking strategy to close out money leagues.

Top 10K = Top 10,000 players in the Overall rank
1K = Top 1000 players in the Overall rank,

Have to agree with the sentiments about picking who you think will score the most points at any given time.
Also I think template is banded about too often with regards to Gameweek to Gameweek scoring, as this has been a bizzare season where the big hitters seem to explode every few games rather than back to back.

This is the best thread I've read on here in quite a while!

Most of what I think has been covered above but probably my best tip for climbing the rankings is to hop off early when you think a player will regress. Even one or two GWs without a player who has previously performed really well and has a couple of 2s in a row will greatly benefit you if you choose a canny replacement.

Another one is to get out quickly when you realize you've made a mistake. Don't hold on stubbornly believing he will come good. An example that jumps to mind is Moreno earlier this season. I got him in after his goal at Spurs but dumped him after 2 GWs when I saw how badly Liverpool were defending!

Intriguing thread, but I feel there is a certain amount of panic in the whole conversation. Just because roster templates are forming and teams look similar doesn't mean that the rankings will be cemented as well once the overall scores get tighter.

The right captaincy choice, an unlikely CS from a third defender, and a goal from an unsung seventh attacker could give you a massive boost in any given week of 10-15 points over the masses, which is currently worth 2000-3000 spots from my position of 6k.

Lukaku's second half vs United during the 2013 finale let me soar about 1500 places into the top 5k at the end of gw38 alone.

It's all still to play for.

I think that the over riding factor about whether you make the top 1000 is your cpt choice.

This season my choices have been absolutely killing me. I've caught all the blanks of Aguero, Sanchez etc etc. I've not made any outrageous choices, I most often have gone with the cpt articles on here. I'm languishing 30k + with umpteen red arrows recently.

Conversely, my mate is sitting in the top 1k. We have had largely the same players in our teams. I'm about 115 points behind him and his captain choices, most of which I could have made as I had the players have got him just over 115 more than mine.

It doesn't then take a genius to work out why I'm not in the top 1k or at least a lot higher than I am.

Interestingly, in a game where there are no cpt choices, the telegraph game, I have two teams in the top 1k. A strong squad and watching the fixtures and form are required there and what essentially is very often pot luck in the choice of a cpt is not an issue.

So whilst obviously having a strong squad and not taking too many big risks in differentials would be important, I think that cpt choice is the single most important factor as the consequences for getting it wrong are an absolute rank killer.

Seeing as things are dead here I could use some advice from you guys. I wild carded last week and already thinking of taking a hit.

    Currently on

    Panty hammer ( haha)

    Terry Bertrand Moreno wisdom wasi

    Hazard Sanchez adm chadli Boyd

    Kun Costa kane.

Thinking chaddli to Carzola and Terry to berrelin -4,Can then do Moreno to either Clyne or Azpi next week.

    Sorry for the long post.

Should I take the hit, save or transfer one of Chadli Moreno

    ***POLL***

Earlier this morning I created a poll asking the question; are you going for both Costa AND Aguero in the January wildcard or just selecting one of the two.

35 responses and the results so far are:

    Aguero + Costa: 60% (21 votes)
    Just Agüero: 34% (12 votes)
    Just Costa: 6% (2 vote)
    Neither: 0%

It gives a nice visual on what people are thinking around that dilemma
Interesting Aguero seems to be the key man, with 33 of 35 including him in their WC.

Keep voting and I’ll share the responses later on today.
Go forth and vote. Here’s the link: http://goo.gl/HQQBv2

I'm in the top 1k and am following this strategy above.

Going for template with a couple of low risk differentials (JWP).
If I was in top 10k then I'd be risking no Costa and going for Oscar instead, or double chelsea defence.

At this stage it comes down to your captaincy choice largely.

I'm considering 3 arsenal attacks atm too..everybody owns Sanchez..so it's like Giroud + Cazorla vs Defoe/Kane + ADM/Silva/Sterling..fair to say both combos look similarly strong , Caz being on form and setpieces duty could justify the pick..

Picking all the template players without seriously considering whether they are the best available options is like buying a safety net and hoping for the best.

Nevertheless if they are the best options out there..then it makes little sense to purposely take them out to punt..luckily usually the template picks always have a few that are faltering

OK. coming out of the closet 😆 as regards to Jonty's post. this is my first season, I started GW 3 & I'm ranked 2 mil (team is linked).

    WC draft.
    Pantilimon Krul
    Fonte Terry Wisdom PvA Wollscheid
    Sanchez Hazard Fabregas Puncheon JWP
    Aguero Kane Giroud.

I've got really better at this game albeit bad choices, indecision, captain fails & a couple late transfers. I can get Costa in but with a relatively soft backline.

    1. ⭐ Bemba_Da ⭐
      • 13 Years

aguero only will be a differential, having costa won't help you climb the ranks it will either keep you where you are or make you drop

        • 10 Years

I meant having both. Everyone cant afford that combo without disturbing team balance, right?

that's what I mean, having both won't essentially see you climb rank drastically. If you go with aguero there is a bigger risk but will also there is bigger chance of rank increase if your differential does well and costa not so well.

It's a 2 head coin with it landing on it's narrow side so no heads.
              Quite rare.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. 😀 luck is massive in this game. There are far too many variables for there not to be. I'd put it at 80% luck but it's how good you are at the 20% skill part that makes the difference.

        I'd say 80% skill, 20% luck.

All you can do is make good, solid, playing picks week in week out - then its down to those players producing and a huge slice of luck.

It's like poker - there are big swings either way but the more you play the probabilities kick in. If you get enough 60-40 situations in your favour you get a profit - but it can take time and a lot of swings...

In poker it is universally recognised as a game of 80% luck and 20% skill. The top players always rise to the top eventually but any novice can beat a pro in the short term.

              Agree to disagree.
Over 38 nights of pokers, there will only be one winner.
On a night, the novice can win.

Replace the word skill with instinct or time. No. Skill involved

thats what I'm saying. The Hof doesn't show anything to do with luck, it only shows the skill factor. To say the game is 80% luck doesn't take away anything from an individual's skill.

80% luck would mean it's a lottery & making the top 10K each season hard to do. You could have no luck in a season & finish top 10K just with good choices. A dead team would win FPL every season. Skilled players get their team close to this team before others.

Theres one very good piece of evidence that luck part plays a huge part and that is in most years you can see many folk in the top 100 or even top 1000 that have never been anywhere near those rarified heights before (and may well not be ever again).

To be up there you have to get pretty much every decision right, those that dont fall by the wayside. Out of a huge sample size (3 million players) you will see a small portion playing a close to perfect decision tree, thus keeping them near the top.

Of course skill plays a part, but the luck part should not be under-estimated. Thats where the fallacy of never taking hits comes from - people look at those at the top and often see they have taken little or no hits and assume thats the 'correct' way to play. In an ideal world yes, but theres no point minimising your hits if your team is woeful and not scoring points. Whats most important is that you have the players scoring points - ideally you achieve this with as little points penalty as possible.

Agreed, this is the highest rank I have ever achieved - partly I am improving year on year, but luck has been a massive part of it.

I just got on the right bandwagons this year - last year I missed them all!

    Hi,

could do with some WC advice.

    Team as stands

    Heaton/Hamer
    Skrtel/Hutton/Fonte/Baird/Bellerin
    Hazard/Elia/Sanchez/Sanchez(from AVL)/Oscar
    Kane/Aguero/Costa

    0.1ITB on WC

Im happy with most of it but I bought Oscar in just to try and make some more value back over the 2 week period, possibly same with Elia. see what happens before the GW.

    Any advice?

Im considering ditching Oscar/Kane but also using the opportunity to get a Chelsea defender in

So A) stick with Sktrel/Oscar/Kane (welcome to changing Oscar to Cazorla or anyone else)
    B) Sktrel/Oscar > Terry/Downing
    D) find some way of bringing in Giroud for Kane...
    C) any other suggestions welcome!
