  11. Is It Time For FPL To Ditch Captains?

    reposting

FPL really should remove captaincy as a feature and simply add more scoring metrics, especially for defenders. Not all the way like UFPL have done but a nice middle ground. Simple is good, but this is a bit too simple. May as well call the game Fantasy Pick-A-Captain.

When you consider the fact that if my entire squad (transfers, etc. all) are held constant and I manage to cap my highest scorer week in and out I would be 100+ points clear of FIRST PLACE, it's obvious that captaincies are huge point drivers and all else is a bit more negligible.

..and before some of you who are intent on ignoring a discussion, I had Walcott (c) and scored 21 with 4 big hitters left so this isn't based on sour grapes. 🙂

Helps differentiate template teams to some extent. Everyone is going to own Hazard / Kun but still gives you a chance at making it worth something

well yeah, but that's why it wouldn't be a standalone removal. it would come along with some additions in points scoring that makes DMs interesting or specific defenders better than others.

right now, you'd have to say about 90% of the Premier League's players are just not worth considering

2 separate issues. I agree with rewarding DMs but hard to come up with a fair system that works every week - kind of like baps. And you'll immediately have a shift to DMs with the most to do every game, I.e. 85% would still be non-existent with those 1/2 popular DMs filling in slots currently occupied by Mane etc.

well I know they want to keep the game simple (which I do like) which is why I mentioned them in the same vein. remove captaincies, add a little extra flavor to compensate that isn't so random.

I wholly agree. In a bitter moment over Christmas I worked out that against the bloke who was above me in my mini league, my ten players averaged 12 points more than his per week (over a two month period). He had just picked the right captain 8 times on the spin and was inexplicably still about me. Once again I pick Sanchez last night, he picks kane. And yes, I'm bitter.

While it is a case of if you Auntie was your Uncle I share the sentiment - I'm OR 27 and yet seem to mess the captain up every week.

      I disagree.

There is still some skill involved picking a successful captain, its like putting a triple multiplyer on a prediction.

Difference being your team is set up to score maximum points long term. Captaincy choices are week by week, adding that slight complexity.

I feel your pain - currently on an absolutely hideous run of captaincy fails - 9 weeks in a row now I haven't managed a captain whose base score was more than 5 measly points!

      GW17 - Sakho v LEI - 5pts
      GW18 - Giroud v QPE - -2pts (The lowest ebb)
      GW19 - Austin v CPL - 2pts
      GW20 - Silva v SUN - 2pts
      GW21 - Hazard v NEW - 3pts
      GW22 - Aguero v ARS - 1pt
      GW23 - Pelle v SWA - 2pts
      GW24 - Aguero v HUL - 5pts
      GW25 - Sanchez v LEI - 2pts

These were all plum fixtures and players (apart from maybe Pelle but that was VC after Sanchez (c) didn't appear v Villa) who looked like good solid choices. As it is I've scored 40pts total from my captains in 9 weeks, whereas my main rival hasn't updated his team since before Christmas where he left the armband on Harry Kane and in the meantime has scored a whopping 170pts from the Kane captaincy over last 9 weeks! I have had numerous H2H's where the vast majority of my team outscores my opponents, but if your captaincy isn't spot on, you're dead meat.

I'd also like to advocate hits should be halved to -2, I've always felt a -4 is far too much punishment for effectively being an active manager rather than sitting on your hands - with a minus four you basically need a player to score and the other to do nothing to make it worthwhile (as taking a hit on a defender is never a great idea). Last night being a prime example - the guys that take a keen interest in the game get the teamsheets, draft Defoe and Sanchez in, yet the fools who sit on their hands and stick with Austin and Giroud end up scoring 4pts more thanks to not having any negatives. That's not fair and active management should be rewarded. Also, don't get me started on autosubs - they reward the uninitiated.

I'm pretty bad at picking captains and whilst part of me would love to agree with the statement, I do think it adds a interesting variable each week. The teams are template enough and as someone has already commented above, it's another variance to sort the men from the boys.

Is Giroud not starting a sign of things to come or was he simply rested?

It was tactical, but I can't see it continuing. The base of our midfield isn't good enough to be able to always build from defence, and without Giroud we can't go long, so often end up playing in dangerous areas, or losing the ball going long.

An 'injury' he played on for 40 minutes or so.

definitely think Giroud needs to start... was Sanchez deployed up front? how did he do?

It was very interchangeable. Hard to tell who was up front a lot of the time. At times Rosicky, Ozil, Theo and Alexis were all the most advanced players.

He struggled to get in the game though. Whenever he touched the ball the Leicester players just kicked him to pieces. The officiating was appalling.

Basically. Make a captaincy decision on the best info you have and look at fixture and form. Then don't captain that person. Captain someone else.

What a player Ibe is, so great to watch and has a solid skill set. Played with so much confidence again, unlucky not to score, and is currently at 4.4m. I might take the plunge to do JWP ----> Ibe, I like the look of having him for even a 30 min sub.

I suspect Sanchez, Ozil and Giroud are the three most nailed on Arsenal attackers.

    Walcott owners be warned.....
