This Much We Know – Gameweek 25

As the dust settles on the midweek matches, we take a look at some of the lessons learned. Arsenal’s pair of playmakers and the upturn in forward options at both ends of the price brackets give us plenty to contemplate.

Ozil is stealing Santi’s limelight…
Handed another start on the left as Arsene Wenger opted for Alexis Sanchez up front against Leicester, the German’s form continued with a pair of assists in the 2-1 triumph. Since recovering from injury, Ozil has started each of the last three Gameweeks and has produced returns on every occasion for a total of 32 points, courtesy of two goals, three assist and six bonus points. Cazorla – the only other Arsenal heavy-hitter to also start the last three – seems to have tailed off by comparison and after producing a converted penalty and two assists against Villa, has delivered back-to-back blanks as Ozil becomes increasingly influential for the Gunners in the final third.

N’Doye could save the Tigers…
A vital home win over Villa suggested Hull have the appetite for a relegation scrap as Steve Bruce’s side scrambled clear of the bottom three. Fundamental to Tuesday’s triumph was the decision to partner Nikica Jelavic and new boy Dame N’Doye up top as the Tigers tore into their lacklustre visitors in Paul Lambert’s last match in charge. Prior to their midweek result, no Hull forward had played a part in more than one goal in any given Gameweek – on his first start for the club, N’Doye delivered a goal and assist and with QPR, Sunderland and Leicester in the next four, has the chance to fire the Tigers up the table.

’Arry’s exit might keep the R’s afloat…
Few, if any, gave QPR a fighting chance as they made their way to Sunderland. Having lost every away match under Harry Redknapp, the loss of top scorer Charlie Austin suggested they’d offer little resistance at the Stadium of Light but it seems that their former manager’s departure may be a blessing in disguise after Chris Ramsey orchestrated a shock 2-0 win. Ramsey’s task has been made that bit tougher after midweek scorer Leroy Fer was ruled out for ten weeks with a knee injury but his tactical tinkering proved decisive on Wearside. With Fer and the likes of Niko Krancjar and Matty Phillips fielded in their favoured positions and Rio Ferdinand alongside Steven Caulker at the back, Ramsey’s QPR already has a different feel about it.

Sturridge is back in business…
With Raheem Sterling sidelined through injury, the forward was handed his first start since Gameweek 3 as Liverpool edged past Spurs in a five-goal thriller at Anfield. Sturridge may have failed to score but his pair of assists served up an eight-point haul and brought him back onto our radars as Brendan Rodgers’ side continue their relentless climb up the table. As we noted in yesterday’s Technical Area article, Sturridge’s underlying stats since returning from injury are superior to last season’s and suggest that the Fantasy returns should be on the rise if he can start to stick away his opportunities.
as is Aguero…
A two-goal haul at Stoke last night finally brought the City striker’s barren run to an end. Having managed just two assists in four appearances prior to the Britannia visit, Aguero had disappointed since returning from injury but his sparkling display – allied with the return of Yaya Toure – bodes well for Fantasy managers ahead of clashes with Newcastle, Leicester and Burnley in the next four. With Diego Costa now free from suspension and Sturridge also in the mix, the battle of the premium priced strikers is set to intensify.

Chelsea lack bite without Costa…
There’s no question that the Blues suffer in the final third without their star striker. Jose Mourinho’s side may have won four and drawn two of the six league matches without Costa on board but, as we saw against Everton last night, they struggle to put away opponents and have triumphed by more than a single strike in just one of those four victories. Chelsea have notched 1.7 goals per match when Costa has been missing but that average leaps to 2.4 when he’s around – potentially good news for owners of Eden Hazard after the Belgian managed just one goal and assist over Costa’s three-match suspension.

We can’t write Ings off…
Harry Kane aside, there are few forwards quite as consistent as the Burnley forward right now. After finding the net just once in the opening 11 Gameweeks, Ings was slow in making his mark in the top-flight but eight goals and four assists over the subsequent 14 rounds of fixtures underlines the transformation. Impressively, Ings’ midweek strike at Old Trafford means he has produced points in ten of his last 14 league appearances and it’s fair to say if the Clarets are to get any joy out of a brutal next few matches (che, SWA, liv, MCY, sou, TOT, ARS), he needs to continue that form.

Pardew’s spoilt for choice…
The Palace boss has a couple of substitutes to thanks for salvaging a point at home to former club Newcastle. Fraizer Campbell had played just four minutes of Pardew’s first four matches in charge but, after being sent on as a replacement for the injured Yaya Sanogo, fired the equaliser courtesy of a Yannick Bolasie assist. Eased back into action after returning from the African Cup of Nations, Bolasie looks poised to challenge Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha for the wide roles, whilst Campbell’s strike – allied with the decision to bench Dwight Gayle – look set to cause Fantasy managers a real headache.

Ideye may be Pulis’ main man…
With Victor Anichebe calling off due to yet another injury, the Baggies summer signing grabbed his chance as the lone striker in a crucial win over Swansea. Having notched as a sub in the previous Gameweek, Ideye’s goal and assist in the 2-0 victory means he’s now played a part in three of West Brom’s last four strikes. With Sunderland, Villa, Stoke and QPR in four of the next six, the Nigerian – who had scored just a single goal due to limited pitch time under Alan Irvine – is suddenly another name to consider in the budget bracket.

ADM's been ok...not as good at FPL as we wanted but he done good...Ozil just deteriorated very quickly around Christmas last year. I can't remember which game it was but you could plainly see he was struggling and ended up being subbed...He never really recovered from that...

The truth is that class in one league does not mean immediate returns in another. The Premier League is by far the toughest league to play in, especially when coming from a soft league like La Liga..

Ozil was rightly called out for being lazy and almost uninterested, but you don't lose your talent. He's shining like we all expected him to, many just expected it to be consistent last season when it really wasn't.

You're over-reacting. He went through a really poor run of form for a long while. It would have been fair to say on up to that point before he got his form back that he was a bit of a flop, considering his price and the team he plays for.

I don't think his skill and talent were ever in question, the only doubts were in his commitment and work rate. I think taking a few months off helped him regain his hunger and desire. Really easy to to lose your drive when you are making millions. This is what makes Alexis so special, his passion for the game has always been his biggest asset.

I'm happy for him too however expectations are always high when a proven player in other leagues and internationally suddenly struggles in the premier league. What do you expect?

The guy carried on like a prat in the early days with Mertesacker blasting him for his attitude. Immediately gets people offside (so to speak).

I enjoyed that hot topic thread from HVT about becoming disillusioned with FPL.
I'm not enjoying it at all at the moment and I'm glad there's a break for FA cup.
Red arrows definitely = bad mood and I'm sick and tired of watching matches hoping for a CS or an assist rather than just enjoying the football.
I can't see myself ever stopping playing FPL but on the other hand I kind of regret ever starting playing it.

        It's a very large group.

But Grannie is at least prepared to have his failures exposed on the Scoutcast. His experiences are perhaps more representative of average member of our community than others who we only hear from when they have a big game-week or successful season.

And Evs wasn't just a one-season wonder. He had a great track record and was a popular poster here even before his outstanding season when he went into the final game-week with a real chance of becoming FPL champion. He may not be having his best ever season, but he's still in with a good chance of finishing in the top 10k again. He may even have a life outside FPL!

        Fascinating thread that really.
For me it's very similar to following my team... Great highs, awful lows... And the lows used to leave me in a fug for days but that's just not right at all and I've learnt to switch that off. Enjoy the highs and turn off the lows - go and do/see the other things you love / are important to you.
Not saying 'learn' to do that in a patronising way because it's not that easy, but once you can switch off like that it's pretty easy to replicate (and I get quite a lot of practice!)

My main issue though is that even when I've had monster GW I'm still strangely unsatisfied.
Like my ML rival only score 3 points less for example. Or a benched CS. Or losing a late CS. Or a YC for my captain.
I'm never truly happy playing this silly game.

I know what you mean. Again, similar to following your team though. Say they win but your rival wins too, or the performance wasn't as good as it should be. You've just got to savour the good bits (how good is it in FPL when your unfancied pick pays off) and shrug off anything negative.

Sanctimonious: "acting as if morally better than others". [Cambridge Dictionary]

There is nothing moral about my post. Just a challenge to the self-indulgent nonsense being posted by people who always need to blame someone else.

This site is riddled with a herd mentality. Succeed as a herd, fail as a herd, commiserate with one another as a herd. To me, that's the most irritating thing on here. But each to his own.

              16-1.

Quite the indictment. It seems people on here are less concerned by pedantry and more concerned with spotting a conceted know-it-all.

By the way, please feel free to quote the Cambridge Dictionary again on the word indictment. As you obviously had to it the first time too with sanctimonious.

It does sound a bit like you are pontificating a little Ruth. (: to speak or express your opinion about something in a way that shows that you think you are always right)
Surely you have made some mistakes that in hindsight you regret maybe even had a little moan?
Some are expressing their views that's all nothing wrong with that in my book,
It's called free speech and all of us are entitled to it.

          1. Ruth_NZ
            • 9 Years

Yeah I have made lots of mistakes. This is my first FPL season and you should see the mess of a squad I started with. More recently I came to the view that Southampton would regress and went without any Southampton defenders which has hurt me a bit over the last few weeks. But actually I don't moan about it. If it's my mistake I try to correct it. If it's happenstance I try to have patience with my picks and not knee-jerk away from them.

Constructing thread after thread about why people are fed up with FPL doesn't seem that constructive to me. It's more helpful to examine whether you are making bad decisions and if so to figure out why. That's my take anyway.

One last thing. I haven't posted a single RMT in the time I have been using the site. I don't want to be told to do the same thing as everyone else so there's no point. The game is an interesting challenge to me and I'm trying to figure out the best way to tackle it. Copying everyone else will just get me the same results as everyone else and I'm not interested in that.

FPL has lost it's Mojo. They really need to spice it up and do a few radical things, losing the stupid winter wildcard would be a start.

The thing I;ve noticed is that players like I who have never and will never challenge for the title, but play with punts are not even a minority on here anymore. Were so few as to be anonymous.

Agreed, I'd do better with neither Wildcard. Wished the rules were like the Mcdonald game in World Cup. Nice to recognise midfielders like Matic with recovered balls and tackles. All the points for defenders in boring 0:0s is annoying.

Yes. If FPL insist on having two wildcards in order to encourage the less serious players, I would prefer that one had to be played in the first half of the season and the other anytime during the second half. Then we wouldn't all have to play one of them in January and end up with remarkably similar squads.

Though part of me wonders if it is to do with the league this season as well.

I don't know why, I'm not enjoying the games as much as previous seasons. There's an excitement factor that I just don't get from the PL this season, I don't really know why.

Couldn't agree more. Not only are we relating our expectations and a player's performance strictly to the number of FPL points they produce, you can argue that 'statistics' are affecting the players themselves as well.

Since players are conscious that they are being measured by some type of statistic (ie pass completion %, key passes, distance covered) every time they touch the ball, many seem to playing more conservative, taking less chances and not enjoying the game as much.

I'd like them to get rid of the double captain points personally, maybe a system where you get rewarded an extra free transfer if you captain gets a certain rating or something, i'm just bitter as I make terrible choices tbh.

Completely agree. All I could about Wednesday night was benching Kane (yes I'm f****** stupid!), despite having cpt'd Aguero, I had lost the chance to gain another 10 points on my ML rival, I was infuriated.

      People overanalyse this.

Most people on here know the game better than the average guy playing (the casual...'cringe')

Their picks are normally wise ones based on form, stats, availability. Their teams are set up based on fixtures and future adaptability. Everything is in place till the whistle goes - then anything can happen and it normally does. Early injuries/red cards, woodwork being hit, perfect goals disallowed, offside goals given - you name it.

      Answer?

Control the controllables. Don't beat yourself up if it goes wrong. Don't be smug if it goes right. Stay level headed.

And the statement a lot of people on here might hate - it is a game and nobody gets killed.

I feel your pain. Started playing 2012-13 and loved it first season. was pretty much instantly hooked.

However, at some point last season, FPL started to become a series of weekly dullard transfers. There seemed to appear an obsession with sticking with the crowd and mirroring the moves of the top 1000 so as not to lose them. Every GW was a matter of sticking your (C) on Suarez and hoping the rest would sort itself out.

Fpl has become kind of like white noise for me. My life is as it was, but with a constant backdrop of fpl

I'm planning a surprise for my dad to the bridge. Do you guys know how early you have to get in line to get a ticket and what the average price is for decent seating on the longsides?

Last time we went to the bridge, I got mugged off and payed 80 Pounds per ticket to sit at the very top of the longsides. I'm not letting that happend again..

    1. Ruth_NZ
      • 9 Years
      9 years, 3 months ago

      Are you serious?

You won't get a ticket for any game at the Bridge for the rest of this season unless you are a season-ticket holder or member or get them from a tout. Getting in line for a ticket is very much a thing of the past.

The only way you might do it is if you know a couple of season ticket holders who want to miss a match.

The East and West Stand Upper Tiers ("the longsides") are among the most expensive tickets in the ground. Many people prefer the overview nowadays.

      1. Harvey Specter
        • 11 Years
        9 years, 3 months ago

Oh wow. I didn't know it would be that hard to get hold of a ticket within an affordable price. I live in Norway, sp becoming a member to see maybe 2-3 matches a year is probably not gonna pay off. But thanks for clearing that up 🙂

          • 9 Years

Membership isn't that expensive. Tickets are all sold online nowadays.

The only tickets that ever get on general sale are League Cup and FA Cup home games in the early rounds and CL group stage games. League games and CL knockout stages always sell out to season-ticket holders and members.

Try going on here and seeing if someone will help you. A lot of season ticket holders and members use the site.

There will always be the odd exception to the rule when a team has a good season but by in large most of those teams are happy to finish mid table

But thats a good achievement for many of these teams. They're not big clubs. Villa and Newcastle are big clubs, but their achievements dont reflect it.

Stoke - pushing for the top ten, would be a good achievement for them

West Ham - Still in the running for a Europa spot, having a great season

Everton - obviously going through some trouble atm but will ultimately want to be pushing for europa again next season

Stoke were a 3rd tier team in the 90s. Being top tier is already good. Staying up so long is brilliant. Not even being in relegation battle is an outstanding achievement from them at this level

Stoke? Do you realise what Stoke are doing is already way above where they should be. Stoke are punching well above rheir rightful spot. Thats a very well ran club.

This. Theyve actually gotten better each year. Not delap on wings now.
Moses and bojan were ambitious moves
Actually getting there slowly but not a long ball team now

Of course they are. You try coming from the lower leagues and playing good football against man utd or moneybags chelsea and not getting relegated.

Theyve gradually gotten better bit by bit. Imagine if Peterborough came up.
That was where stoke were not too long ago.

AstonVilla have a european cup. Totally different level of club who should be more ambitious than stoke

Bit unfair on Newcastle. They bought what looked like quite a few decent exciting players preseason. Shame they got injured/ weren't up to it. Cabella only just starting to look like an excciting player again. Im still waiting to see De Jong. 🙁

This. Southampton are much smaller club and sold lambert, shaw, chambers, lovren, lallana, osvaldo and ramirez this year.

But still had high ambitions and brought in some solid young talent and a manager who has high expectations.

Villa brought in big clubs rejects on big wages like sinclair, senderos, cleverly, joe cole, cissokho as well as the likes of nzogbia, kieron richardson, shay given and all sitting taking good money.

They went big name big money mercenaries with nothing left to play for. Southampton went Mane, Wanyama, Forster, Tadic, Pelle and despite having jrod out all year still done brilliant

Nearly two hours for half a page? The soul has been sucked out of this site. It has become a monster so big that that it is swamped on a couple of days a week by A or B captain? C or D benched? X or Y for a hit? and the usual RMT's that most have the personalities have left, good or bad. Sad 🙁
