PlayON Picks – Gameweek 30

Our Friday lunchtime look at the PlayON Player Price List arrives once again. As always, we offer a couple of picks per position: one essential weekend target and a left-field alternative for your consideration.

Fantasy managers should be aware that PlayON have separated the early kick-off (Man City at home to West Brom) from the Gameweek. Essentially, this allows us to soak in the team sheets for the five matches that take place at 3pm and finalise our starting line-ups prior to the deadline.

Goalkeepers – David Ospina
Available for 7.2m, the Arsenal stopper kept a second clean sheet in three in last week’s convincing 3-0 defeat of West Ham. Owned by 8% of PlayON managers, Ospina travels to an injury-hit Newcastle side that are also devoid of the services of top scorer Papiss Cisse through suspension – having scored once in the last four Gameweeks, the Magpies are clearly toiling up front just now. Southampton’s 7.8m-priced Fraser Forster is currently the most popular goalkeeper and sits in 38% of teams ahead of a home encounter with Burnley but, for just 0.2m more, we’ve gone for Thibaut Courtois as our essential pick. The 11%-owned Belgian faces an away trip to Hull, who have scored only once in three matches and are without the injured Nikica Jelavic. Courtois is an excellent shot-stopper with 2600 save points accrued over the last three – 400 points more than Forster in the same period – and is the cheapest of the Chelsea defensive regulars.

Defenders – James Collins
An injury to team-mate James Tomkins has afforded the Welshman an opportunity to step up in the Hammers first-team. Visitors Sunderland have scored a single goal in five matches and despite the arrival of new manager Dick Advocaat are likely to struggle here. The main attraction of the central defender is his price-tag – available for 6.1m, Collins, who sits in just 5% of PlayON teams, provides a budget route into Sam Allardyce’s backline. We’ve picked Ryan Bertrand (7.2m, 45% ownership) as our essential defender for the same reason. The Saints left-back is considerably cheaper than Jose Fonte (8.2m) and Nathanial Clyne (8.1m) and just 0.1 more expensive than Toby Alderweireld, despite offering far greater threat in the attacking third, with two goals and a pair of assists so far. Southampton host a battling Burnley side and have racked up nine of their 13 clean sheets at St Mary’s.

Midfielders – Scott Sinclair
We’re backing the Villa wide man as our left-field pick as Tim Sherwood’s side look for a fourth successive win in all competitions at home to Swansea. Available for just £7.2m, Sinclair scored in his previous home appearance and looks to have established himself as a key figure on the flank for the midlands outfit in recent outings – with an ownership of just 3%, he looks a real differential heading into the weekend. Sadio Mane comes in as our essential midfielder. We were tempted to go for Eden Hazard but the Belgian’s £14m price tag is far steeper than Mane’s kind £9.7m ahead of Southampton’s home encounter with Burnley. Currently sitting in 46% of PlayON teams, the Senegal international has scored in three of his last four starts at St Mary’s and was handed a support role through the middle in last week’s trip to Chelsea.

Forwards – Diafra Sakho
West Ham will be desperate for a home win against Sunderland after losing their last two at the Boleyn Ground. Despite scoring just once in the last four Gameweeks, Sakho (£8.6m) has looked a real threat in and around the box – indeed, he’s produced more attempts inside the penalty area (16) than any player over that period. Owned by 15% of PlayON managers, he’ll fancy his chances against a Black Cats backline that shipped four at home to Villa last weekend. As mentioned above, with City’s clash against West Brom excluded from the Gameweek, we’re unable to call upon Sergio Aguero’s services. Instead, we back Tottenham’s Harry Kane (£8.6m, 65% ownership) to continue the form that has served up six goals in as many matches – at home to a Leicester side that’s conceded at least twice in all but one of their last 11 road trips, he seems set for another prosperous weekend.

With a double GW coming up dont see how I can spend a precious transfer on a defender home against LEI, thanks for the input tho. Esp when Wolly, Bellerin and Reid are all somewhat doubts.

The problem this week of course, is that we have a lot of players who didn't perform at all last week.

Who is to know who will bounce back with a double figure score, or leave us all wondering why we didn't get the opportunity to ship them out?

Someone convince me out of this:

Aguero and Widsom to Ivan and Giroud (for a hit)

Aguero blanking too much and think Ivan Giroud will outscore him together.

but I'm probably asking because I haven't convinced myself...

GW34 seems sensible to load up on DGW34 and 37 players at same time.

Spend my FT on getting Mane in, or save for next week? Prob is with DGW31 is that if you get two DGW players in, your are stuck with one the following week... So I may just punt on selling Eriksen for someone anyway. Mane could run riot this week and with 2% ownership...

Mane and Southampton looked terrific against Chelsea. I have a feeling he's going to kill it this week. The Saints finally have all the key players back, now it's back to business...

But Eriksen has a plum fixture too, so I'm unsure about that move.

My inference is that in this proposal there would be no transfer limit. You get once as week and they accumulate to the extent that you do not use any. Currently, there is a cap to the rollover.

How so, Jayden? Players could pretty much play the game as they do now. Those who wish to be more patient with transfers could overhaul their team every month or so, or when there are perceived changes in fixture difficulty.

I think you'd definitely get a tactical split between managers playing form or fixtures.

Exactly. This format was the way I played fantasy baseball, football, basketball and hockey with a US-based company. So much more interesting. No wild card either. You actually got an allowance of 4 or 5 trades per week with much more volatile price changes. I can see there be far fewer trades allotted per week in this game, but would like to see more price volatility.

Personally I prefer a pot of say 50 transfers that you can use through the season. It would then allow you a more personal approach to the game rather than herd mentality

I can't see FPL towers ever doing this though as they'd get lots of website traffic until transfers ran out. Essentially a big downward trend from the start. A Winter WC is there to keep people interested.

It could still work... those that play the game casually would come back after a month and find 4 or 5 free transfers to use. Would be interesting.

I think it would make the game to diverse for such a small rule change. You'd have mates playing one flavour over the other, and different price changes of course, so commenting on here would be awkward.

Disagree. I have played this format for many years, and was actively involved in a similar discussion forum. We are all smart and flexible enough to be able to intelligently discuss alternate tactics and strategies.

Yeah, probably more of a headache for Mark and the Scouts, on how to make the forum clear based on the game format.

I wouldn't be keen on having another team to manage though.

I think I might have a longer look at Ultimate next year as the existing format is a bit samey. Bit of a cheek as I'm OR3 at the moment but that's irrelevant to the format...

                Yeah maybe.

Also places like Fantasy Football Exchange offer variations like teams for a one week punt competition etc so there are other formats about.

One pet hate for me is keepers only getting a point for 3 saves - they need to have 9 saves just to get an assist!

That is a very good point from a business, profit, marketing perspective. There are many sides to reconfiguring these types of games -- experience for novices, hard core players, and what keeps "the masses:" interested (which is likely and unfortunately, the priority for the lords of the site).

I like the wildcards. While they often lead to many teams being similar that is up to you. If you want to follow the crowd and pick the same team as everyone else you can. If you don't want to pick a different team.

For me wildcards actually give you more opportunity to make your team more different from everyone else's.

I don't particularly like this idea - I'm happy with the winter wildcard going but not sure about both. It's a great tool to help those stay involved who don't get off to great starts.

I like the rolling transfer idea and would be happy to see it incorporated along with the removal of one wildcard!

Think we are all agreed that Winter WC is not good...if you have worked hard to get high up the league it just levels the playing field again. I don't think this should be about people losing interest personally - you have to constantly keep making good decisions. If you are unlucky with injuries that's just how it goes...

      What I suggest is,

      1) They should introduce rolling transfer
      2) Also, give us two Wildcards one for first half of the season and one for the second half
      3) Scrape off the January wildcard.

To anyone saying 'if it ain't broke'

      ...It is broke.

The WC and Winter WC approach GUARANTEES the emergence of an early season template followed by a January template. The only people who will disagree with this are people who have succeeded in following this template, or slightly pre-empting it, to get high up the rankings.

Anything that means more flexibility and variety between teams, not just in who is in the squad but WHEN those transfers are made, is a good thing.

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years

        This lacks perception.

        The reason templates form is:

        a) people basing decisions on historic player performance and particularly recent player performance;
        b) sites like this which tend to produce herd behaviour and fear of being different;
        c) an innate tendency to caution and conservatism amongst experienced managers.

The winter wildcard is there because the January transfer window is there and can significantly affect PL teams, both with players in and out. It is rational for that reason.

The 'free' wildcard cannot produce a template seeing that everyone uses it at different times. It is also rational because without it - for example - a bad starting selection could effectively kill your season in the first 6 weeks. And it adds an element of strategy which improves the game.

In the end the only reason 'templates' appear is because people want to select similar players. Blaming it on the wildcards is pointless.

I'd be fully behind this plan. I think it's a great idea. I'd also like to see a sim thing to the UPL regarding the captain switch. I don't think people would need to log back on, but one idea would be to have your VC be switched to your C if it outscores it from the day before.

That way you would essentially have a captain shot both days of the weekend which would stop the weekend in ruins because your captain has blanked by 2:30pm Saturday scenario...

I would imagine they would want to avoid making changes that would make FPL more similar to FPL otherwise there wouldn't be much point in having the second game. I find UFPL much more interesting I think more people should move to that game!

Not keen. I'd like the free transfer cap to be increased as there are times when you get 2FTs without anything really worth using either of them for. Don't think this should come at the expense of the wildcards though.

Would love that to happen doubt it will though. Instead of only being able to roll over 1 time maybe cap it at 5 transfers instead. I doubt many of us would be able to get it to that number though!

I have had this view for ages. Its pointless to have a cap of 2FT's, any use it or lose it rule is a limitation in my view. In saying that I still think wild cards have their place. I would allow a season WC as we have now and have a 2nd WC which becomes active from Jan 1 and is available any time until the end of the season.

Could it be that off the back of 2 very high profile, high percentage captaincy blanks for Aguero - that this week suddenly looks like the best week in months to captain him - in terms of impact if he bangs?

Home to West Brom in the lunchtime kick-off would ordinarily see him 1-2k votes out in front of e.g. Harry Kane at this point.

Add Arsenal and Chelsea attackers sharing votes and Aguero(c) looks about as "diff" as it has done since the turn of the year.

It does, but the quick turnaround from a tiring game for him chasing shadows in Barcelona is hardly the ideal preperation. West Brom are organised and defensively strong. Man City are out of sorts. I'd call it brave and I'm sure many without much football knowledge will captain him without thinking. Not for me this week.

Fair points. There is always the chance they vent their frustrations against a far inferior set of players. And it's Aguero's history in lunchtime KOs that's making me think. Hmmm.

Start Hutton (home to SWA) or Naughton (away to AVL)

    Really undecided here!

    Panti
    Ivan // Clyne // Bellerin**
    Haz // Sanchez // Eriksen // Coutinho
    Kun // Kane // Giroo(c)

    Foster** - Wolls -- JWP** -- Dawson

    2FT .2 ITB

    A few verrrrrrry boring options:

    A) Foster > Begovic (rotates well with Panti)
    B) Bellerin/Wolls > Schlupp/Toby A

Removing Bellerin now would help for the blank in 33..

A for me, you've got a while till the blank to ditch Bellerin.

I know this question has been asked lots of times already but i still don't know who to pick as the captain, i think both Kane and Aguero will do well this week.

So who should i pick ?

Just did Alexis to Ramsey for free.

It really freed up a lot of cash, hope I can spend them wisely in the weeks to come. And also hoping for a cheeky Alexis rest this weekend to justify my transfer..

Yeah, could happen. But figure he'll start this weekend given he came from the bench against Monaco.

It's a gamble for sure. But at this point I see no other reason than to spice things up a bit 😛

If he starts on the bench, he'll score big.

    Who's the priority to ditch?

    PVA or Bellerin?
