Fixtures

Frisking the Fixtures – Gameweek 31 – The Weak

After assessing those sides with some favourable fixtures to follow over the upcoming four-to-six Gameweeks, we now turn our attention to those with trickier schedules. Arsenal and United’s bids are set to be put to the test, whilst QPR and Villa’s post-double Gameweek 31 prospects look bleak.

Arsenal

frisking
Arsene Wenger’s outfit are going strong with six league wins on the bounce and appear to be sitting pretty for a Champions League spot. Emirates encounters with fifth-placed Liverpool and leaders Chelsea in their next four are set to put those credentials to the test, however, while a Gameweek 33 blank is also a real deterrent for Fantasy interest over the next few weeks. We already have one eye on the Gunners’ double in the penultimate Gameweek of the season, but many may hold off until the fixture list improves from Gameweek 35 onwards.

The north Londoners’ rearguard have impressed of late, conceding just twice in their last four league outings, though they now face two of the league’s most prolific attacks in Chelsea and Liverpool. Owners of David Ospina will need a rotation option in their ranks to cover the blank and may even look to resign the Colombian to the bench for those two tough home fixtures.

Further forward, Alexis Sanchez’ recent shortcomings have seen over 28,000 FPL managers already part company since last weekend, and the Chilean is unlikely to see a revival in interest until nearer that double Gameweek. The output from both Santi Cazorla and Mesut Ozil has also slowed of late, though their more reasonable price tags may persuade some from showing them the exit just yet. Meanwhile, Olivier Giroud seems unlikely to be threatened by any such slump: the Frenchman has now registered returns in each of his previous eight starts, averaging an impressive 8.25 points per appearance across those displays. We can expect to see plenty of investment heading his way over the course of the next week even in spite of the gloomy schedule: over 50,000 FPL managers have already welcomed his charms to their virtual dressing rooms since last weekend’s deadline.

Stoke

frisking
Back-to-back defeats against West Brom and Crystal Palace have seen the Potters lose significant momentum after what had been a decent start to 2015. One look at their remaining fixtures indicates that they face a battle to further their current mid-table standing. Mark Hughes’ men travel to Chelsea and West Ham in their next two, before welcoming Southampton to the Britannia, whilst clashes with Spurs and Liverpool also loom to form a testing season run-in.

Stoke have not enjoyed their usual success at the back this season, claiming an unremarkable seven clean sheets to this point. To compound matters, Hughes sprung a few surprises with his defence last weekend, dropping Phil Bardsley in favour of Geoff Cameron and maintaining Marc Wilson in the centre, despite Phillip Wollscheid’s availability; owners of those assets will now be assessing their alternatives.

In attack, Victor Moses will sit out the clash with parent club Chelsea next weekend and will now struggle to come back into serious consideration for our midfields. Meanwhile, Mame Biram Diouf’s two strikes in his last three outings took his tally to eight for the season but he continues to be put in the shade by stronger options in and around the 6.0 FPL price bracket.

Hull

frisking

Failure to pick up vital victories over Sunderland and Leicester in recent weeks has left the Tigers firmly rooted in the relegation mire. Their remaining fixtures suggest that they could be unlikely to claw their way to safety. Steve Bruce’s unit face three away days in their next five (swa, sou, cpl), coupled with tough encounters against Arsenal and Liverpool at the KC Stadium. The final two Gameweeks of the season see them meet Spurs and Man United, leaving just a single solid blue square remaining on the Fantasy Football Scout ticker: a vital Gameweek 36 clash with Burnley.

With neither short-term nor long-term prospects boding well for the Tigers, Fantasy interest looks set to be all but nullified. That said, the 3-2 defeat to table toppers Chelsea did at least highlight the merit of going on the attack and pressing the big teams, and we could well see Bruce emphasising a bid for goals over the next few weeks. With Nikica Jelavic ruled out until the end of April with a knee problem, Abel Hernandez and Dame N’Doye will be relied upon to produce the goods, but with three of the most on-song defences in the league ahead of them (sou, ARS, LIV), the pair will have to prove their fixture-proof credentials to deliver returns.

Be wary Of…

QPR
The impending double Gameweek, which features trips to West Brom and Aston Villa, is set to encourage plenty of Fantasy attention around the Hoops’ chief protagonists. However, a quick glance at the schedule beyond next weekend’s deadline offers little promise. Chelsea make their way to Loftus Road in Gameweek 32, which is proceeded by a blank and trips to Liverpool and Man City in the following four. It seems unwise to be lured into investing too heavily for the double header, with Charlie Austin owners likely to be devising a rapid exit strategy, whilst Matty Phillips’ recent popularity as a fifth midfield option grinds to an abrupt halt post-Gameweek 31.

Aston Villa
Just like QPR, Tim Sherwood’s side boast the luxury of a double Gameweek 31 but appear to offer little potential beyond that. Once the double header has past, the Villians face trips to Spurs and Man City and a blank over the course of three consecutive rounds of fixtures. The Midlanders’ injury-plagued rearguard look set for a busy period, whilst the attacking prospects of Christian Benteke and Gabby Agbonlahor look bleak beyond the current deadline. Those willing to punt on the 5.2-rated Scott Sinclair for the double should perhaps have an immediate replacement in mind.

Man United
United have done everything to prove themselves worthy of a top four spot in the last two Gameweeks, with convincing displays against Spurs and Liverpool sending them five points clear of fifth place. Nonetheless, the real hard work is arguably still to come. After their meeting with Villa, Louis van Gaal’s outfit battle Man City and Chelsea in back-to-back fixtures in what could prove to be a decisive week for the Reds.

Much of their success this season has come courtesy of their defensive efforts, and with just a single goal conceded in their last four outings, it’s safe to say that owners of the likes of David De Gea and Chris Smalling will be reluctant to part company; rotation could, however, be a wise strategy when the crunch encounters hit.

Further forward, Juan Mata is leading the way for “transfers in” amongst United’s ranks with over 25,000 FPL managers having snapped up his services after his brace at Anfield. His pitch time is perhaps still in question, however, with Angel Di Maria competing for inclusion. Similarly, Sergio Aguero’s recent tribulations have seen plenty of attention shift the way of Wayne Rooney, but with Robin van Persie closing in on a return, it remains to be seen whether Rooney can retain his role as a central striker.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Your key FPL rule change for 2015/16 is....

What rule change would you like to see for next season in FPL?

Perhaps you think its already perfect? Perhaps you think defensive midfielders should be given more weight in the game? Perhaps the vice captaincy rule should go? And what of the January wildcard?

By the end of the season there's a very small gap in points between the expensive keepers and the cheap ones, due to keepers from 'smaller' sides often getting more save points. You proposed rule change would just make the cheaper keepers even better value and would pretty much rule out big-team keepers as options.

Perhaps a way to make big-team keepers more popular picks would be to increase the CS points from 4 to 5 for GKs.

Thats an interesting point. Why penalize big team keepers who cannot effect as many saves because of their team being better.

Upping CS points to 5 or even 6 will be a better way

I agree, I think there should also be a BPS score for 'important save', e.g. saving a 1 on 1 or something. Each save is only 1 BPS, but if they introduced this feature and gave, say, 4 or 5 BPS for a big save then we'd see keepers getting more bonus when they have had a great game.

Clean sheets should be worth 5 or 6 points instead of the current 4. This will guarantee more defensive gambles and less template teams.

I think that's missing the point of the dislike for the Jan WC, having everybody WC over the same period brings the template to all the main the main or top teams. Having the 1 or even 2 WC's but able to play at anytime surely is more appealing. FPL brought the Jan WC to try and stimulate & retain interest over the holiday period & tie in with the BPL transfer window. Seemed like a good idea but too many negatives imo.

Get rid of dubious assists, you know the ones where a teammate flicked on the ball at some point in the last 10 seconds of play by which point the oppo have touched it twice and the forward has dribbled and beaten 3 men to get his eyes on goal.

Also have "penalties won" a thing rather than just award scored penalties as assists.

i think this game is pretty perfect..for every rule there is pro n cons.

the vice captaincy rule is to ensure that in case your captain goes missing u are not worse off..like the case of ozil last gw there is no news at all that he is unwell..or fixture postpone due to weather...sometimes u benefit from the rule..sometimes u dont..

jan wc for the pros they might find it as a disadvantage..but this wc oso encourages those who are falling behind to play the game instead of quitting it altogether. the pros can always use the jan WC to their advantage btw..like taking 1-2 weeks punts b4 wc..or make a jan WC team for a 5-6 weeks and then use your 2nd wc for DGW.

defensive mid adding more weights could be an interesting one..but again most people will not notice "recovered balls" or "blocks" etc...and this will add a new complexity to the game and turning more towards stats instead of just watching the game.

if there is a rule that i would want to change its that i do not want the number of transfers that i make and my team value and itb to reveal to everyone after i have made my transfers.

That wouldn't work because teams change systems, would get too messy with players that play in the 2 in a 4-2-3-1 but then play in the right central berth of a 4-4-2 diamond. If you start separating midfielders into 2 categories then you need to start separating full backs and centre backs. keep it simple.

That would be a bit harsh though. Majority of goals keepers can do nothing about and aredue to defensive errors. Maybe minus points for an error like penalty conceded for bringing down a player or spills/fumbles.

I like the game as is but would prefer it with one WC. The comments above in regards to the goalkeepers seems like it would be a good addition. Also seeing as goalkeepers get save points defenders and def midfielders should be awarded points for tackles made/interceptions instead of just bps. Def midfielder should have its own category with points awarded for passes completed/made, tackles, key passes or something of that sort. Maybe a completion rate of over 90% or something. So many great football players in the league that are not fpl options because their role in the real game does not suit the fpl game.

I would like to see anything that would make more players an option.Upping the points potential for goalies and defensive mids maybe as others have spoke of.

I dont like the Bonus Point System. One player has an absolute screamer of a game, gets nothing, where one guy who does nothing all day and taps in a goal off his shin from 3 yards out comes away with all the BPS. It's quite frustrating to see your player doing well and not getting any rewards.

I don't really agree with the whole 'make defensive midfielders an option' concept. The reason we play this game is for fun, and there's nothing fun about cheering on recovered balls and interceptions.

But a player could be MOTM due to his defensive display in the real game and it is a part of the game not appreciated enough. Just IMO. I play in front of the back four or sweeper when I play so I am biased.

Then maybe defensive contributions could be rated slightly higher in the BPS system which would increase their chances of getting bonus points if they have a good game. I don't think they should be directly rewarded with FPL points though.

A loan option would be cool also. Maybe 3 loan transfers a season. There is always a week where you are hiding behind the sitting room couch due to one player. You could make a transfer i.e Aguero to Costa which would revert back after that week. Once you had the money itb obviously.

Awful idea, they do this in Telegraph fantasy football, and it is a real negative.

        - Often the rewards are stupid, for example Berahino owners against Gateshead.
        - Devalues players out of the cup too much.
        - Cup lineups are much more unpredictable.

Keepers of course get save points as well as a few BPs.

Though a slightly heavier BPs weighting and FPL might increase their prices.
Most strikers have about the same as keepers if you include save points from what a quick scan looks like to me Captain. Maybe a few points difference.

Instead of 4 points for a defender's clean sheet, 2 points for playing the first half with a clean sheet, and two more for the second. With appearance points that still gives 6 for a clean sheet, but subbed of after 55 mins gets gets 3, subbed off after 65 mins gets 4 - a better reflection of the contribution, and also makes watching the match more interesting.

Increase the amount of weeks you can roll FTs over from one, to two weeks.

Ideally, 2 points for a defensive mid clean sheet, but I guess it would be hard to say who is a dm as opposed to a cm ...

You think FPL rules should cater for the minority, at the detriment of the majority? Yeah, good point ...

It is terrible simply because it would mean the death of H2H leagues. Whether or not that is most players 'primary focus' is largely irrelevant, plenty of managers still participate in them every season and enjoy them

It wouldn't be of detriment to them though, as all players would have the same opportunities. If people decided to use 3 to get through a round, they would do so with the knowledge they may face someone who hasn't had to do that in the next round. Would all be part of the parcel/risk/planning

Whilst it would be of benefit to the majority of normal players, saving having to waste a FT

Negligible drawback for minority vs. clear positive for majority ...

All we need is negative points removed for own goals and given those players who concede penalties. 80% (ish) of own goals are completely unavoidable and should have no blame attached whereas the opposite is true of penalties conceded

        Agree with this.

I would also increase GK clean sheets to 5 pts and reduce the influence of BPs by awarding only 3 per game (2+1).

Finally I would divide midfielders into "attacking midfielders" and "defensive midfielders", remove CS points from AMs and award 2 CS points to DMs. Defensive midfielders like Matic, Carrick, Coquelin, N'zonzi, Schneiderlin and Noble are relatively unrewarded by FPL for their importance to their teams and this seems a simple way to correct that a bit.

Also if you took it further, and forced everyone to pick a mix of DMs and AMs, you could potentially make the set of viable picks larger.

Yes. I have thought about that but it might be awkward to implement.

The small pool of viable FPL players is a real limitation of the game, I noticed during wildcard season that only around 30 outfield players were getting much mention. If most of us are selecting between the same 30 players there will be a lot of similar teams, especially when "must have" players like Kane, Hazard and (at that time) Aguero are defining squad shape quite narrowly.

I would change the bench to better reflect reality of the game we play, which is typically 3-4-3. Therefore rather than selecting 5 defenders in a team, I would like to see 4 defenders and 4 attackers. This would encourage people to select more balanced benches and less template playing teams.

I think it's a pretty good game overall. I don't go for many of the rule changes suggested. The only two I think are worthwhile are:

      1) Scrap the January wildcard

      2) Allow more transfers to be carried over, so that one can build up at least, say 3, and maybe even more than that.

. More pts for CS, -1 pt for every goal conceded after 2.
. Negative points for giving away a pen whether scored or not.
. More weight to DM (through higher weight on pass completion and on tackles - if you're a midfielder - for example (?) )
. Jan WC is in commercial interest of the game. Many people would stop playing otherwise so can totally understand why it exists although maybe having 2 over the course of the whole season (one each half?) prevents the January bandwagon we see and will still advantage the serious players who will try to use it strategically for DGWs for example.

But overall it's clearly an amazingly advanced and developed game so I'm just being picky. I think it's great!

No limit to the number of transfers that you can roll over. It would help the casuals retain interest and reward those that are happy with their squad who don't feel the need to change things for a few weeks in a row.

1.5x points for vice captain. (and an extra backup captain for fallback)

      - Helps strong teams.
      - Gives more decisions increasing edge for good players and interest.
      - Reduces ridiculous point swings in close captaincy decisions.
      - Means you are less likely to be wanting a player you own to do badly just because he is not your captain.

I'd scrap the January WC and have 2 WCs that you can use at any time. That should make the game less boring with less of a template, especially in early February.

100% back scrapping the Jan WC - I personally hate it for many reasons. Why then have 2 WCs instead? I just don't see the logic.

The game as it is now is really good, if only it had just the 1 WC. Then you have those that use it early if they have made a poor start or want to increase TV early doors and then those that use it late for tactical reasons, or having made a great start. Simples.
