The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 31 – The Midfield

After running through the prime cuts on offer at the back on Wednesday, the focus shifts to the midfield this evening as we roll out our latest Watchlist rankings, offering player recommendations for the next four-to-six Gameweeks. There is no shifting the in-form Eden Hazard and David Silva from the summit, though Juan Mata’s brace at Anfield sees the Spaniard launch himself back into our short-to-mid term thinking, along with, wait for it, Marouane Fellaini….

Having averaged 7.1 points per appearance over Chelsea’s last seven league matches and with a strong upcoming schedule (STO, qpr, MUN, ars/lei, CPL, LIV), Eden Hazard remains untouchable at the top of our rankings. The Belgian international, now valued at 11.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), leads the way for bonus points accrued (34) this season and is now just 21 points behind the 202 he collected a year ago.

While Hazard is very much the gold standard among midfielders this term, David Silva isn’t far behind – the Spaniard has bagged the same number of goals (11), despite missing six matches through injury. The 9.8-priced schemer has registered 11 goal attempts over the last two Gameweeks, four more than any other midfielder, while he has created 15 chances, six more than his nearest rival. With a decent run of fixtures (cpl, mun, WHM, AVL, tot, QPR) to come, there are no signs of his outstanding form being halted.

Sadio Mane jumps up a place in our latest refresh despite blanking in Southampton’s 2-0 win against Burnley. The Saints have the second most favourable schedule (eve, HUL, stop, TOT, sun, lei) according to our Season Ticker, and coming in at just 6.7 in FPL, the Senegal international remains a strong fourth midfielder option – regardless of his recent shift back to a flank role. Mane is one of just four midfielders to record double figures for efforts in the box over the past six Gameweeks.

With three favourable fixtures (NEW, hul, QPR) in the next five, Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho is on the rise again. The Brazilian international has managed 14 goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, the second highest behind Silva, while he has also created nine chances. Coming in at 7.9 in FPL, Coutinho is our preferred Reds midfield option for now, though if Daniel Sturridge’s reported hip muscle tear sees Raheem Sterling lead the attack, that could change. That is, of course, providing Sterling shrugs off the toe problem that has forced him to withdraw from England’s clash with Italy on Tuesday. It’s also worth noting that Coutinho’s above-mentioned trip to Hull in Gameweek 33 may yet be subject to change if the Reds get the better of Blackburn in their FA Cup replay. Passage to the semi-finals would see Liverpool handed a blank with a double Gameweek to follow, vastly influencing our assessment of Liverpool’s assets.

Gylfi Sigurdsson’s stock is in the ascent as Swansea prepare to face a friendly run of fixtures (HUL, EVE, lei, new, STO). The 6.5-priced Icelandic international has only scored once in his last seven league appearances, and was substituted after 63 minutes in the 1-0 win against Aston Villa last time out. However, that run of ties provides the perfect platform for prosperity, with Sigurdsson potentially adding to his five goals and seven assists to date.

Like Sigurdsson, Stewart Downing has struggled for form in recent outings. The Hammers midfielder – who has only delivered one assist in his last eight league outings – rises by virtue of a kind fixture list (lei, STO, mci, qpr, BUR, avl). Coming in at 6.5 in FPL like the Swans schemer, Downing could be an effective mid-price option for those looking to free up funds ahead of Chelsea’s double Gameweek 34.

Having failed to provide attacking returns in five of his last six league appearances, Alexis Sanchez suffers a hefty drop in this week’s ladder. Over 28,000 Fantasy managers have transferred out the Chilean so far, with his price dropping 0.1 to 11.3 in FPL. With Arsene Wenger quotedsaying Sanchez could be rested at some stage, along with the Gameweek 33 blank and tough matches against Liverpool and Chelsea on the horizon, the summer signing may struggle to justify his lofty price tag until the fixtures turn from Gameweek 35.

Christian Eriksen continues to fall down our midfield pecking order, despite picking up an assist in Tottenham’s 4-3 win over Leicester. That made it just two assists in his last seven league appearances, and although Spurs face three favourable fixtures (bur, AVL, new) in the coming weeks, a turn in the schedule come Gameweek 34 means it may be a matter of when, and not if, owners decide to show the 8.4-priced playmaker the door.

Despite having scored seven league goals this season, Juan Mata has barely been on the radar of Fantasy managers. The Spaniard has found it difficult to establish himself in Louis van Gaal’s first XI, with constant changes in formation casting him as a little more than an extra amongst United’s “Hollywood” headliners. But after starting in the 3-0 win against Tottenham, the 8.3-priced midfielder stole the show against Liverpool with two well-taken goals. With Mata revelling on the right-hand side in a 4-3-3 system, the former Chelsea playmaker looks set for an extended run in the first XI. Although the upcoming schedule is mixed (AVL, MCI, che, eve, WBA, cpl), the impressive nature of the last two victories may well convince some to take a gamble on him, even with Angel di Maria looming in the wings.

Marouane Fellaini also earns a place in our refresh after an impressive brace for Belgium against Cyprus last night continued the form that has won his a regular role under Louis van Gaal. As mentioned above, although United’s schedule could be far kinder, they clearly have the form to overcome such a tricky schedule and at a price of just 6.3, the former Everton man is certainly easier on the pocket than team-mate Mata but, potentially, just as effective and explosive on his day.

Three goals and an assist in his last four league appearances have brought Liverpool’s Jordan Henderson into our thoughts. After the trip to the Emirates, the Reds face four kind fixtures (NEW, hul, wba, QPR), which could offer the 6.5-priced midfielder the chance to continue his rich vein of form. His prospects would also be further boosted if Brendan Rodgers’ side beat Blackburn in their FA Cup quarter-final replay on April 8, leaving Liverpool with a double Gameweek – as mentioned above, though, this would leave him without a fixture in Gameweek 33.

Yannick Bolasie creeps in as our weapon of choice from Alan Pardew’s Palace dynamic midfield, edging out team-mates Jason Puncheon and Wilfried Zaha (just). The 5.4-priced midfielder created a league-high six chances in Gameweek 30, and with three favourable fixtures (sun, WBA, HUL) in the next four, looks a viable differential candidate, with an ownership of just 1.5%.

Matt Phillips suffers a drop in our latest refresh. QPR are faced with one of the toughest schedules (wba/avl, CHE, blank, WHM, liv, mci) according to our Season Ticker. Those who brought in the 4.6-valued midfielder for double Gameweek 28 will likely be looking for an exit route once the Chris Ramsey’s side’s latest double is out of the way, with a blank in Gameweek 33 coming after a testing trip to Stamford Bridge.

    Morning DZ,

Any obvious moves here? Plan to WC after GW34 so only 4 weeks to consider. Best I can come up with is:

    A) Santi -> Siggy
    B) Sanchez & Ayoze -> 4.2m & Costa
    C) Santi & Ayoze -> N'Zogbia & Benteke (DGW punts)
    D) Santi, Sanchez & Ayoze -> N'Zogbia, Siggy & Costa (4 points)

    Myhill
    Terry, Berty, PVA
    Sanchez, Hazard, Santi, Silva, Eriksen
    Aguero, Kane

    Foster, Bellerin, Ayoze, Haidara
    Bank 0.1m, 2FT, 1WC

The yellow card situ is a bit of a concern with Costa, but you are right - he's nailed on in my thoughts for the DGW.

That being said, I quite like the look of C this week - very punty but both look good for minutes and QPR is about as good as it gets fixture wise from an attacking perspective.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Fantasy Football v Real Football

Does playing fantasy football enhance or detract from your enjoyment of watching an actual football match. Can watching a football match - either live or on TV - alter your perception of a player from a fantasy point of view? And can the reverse happen too?

Modric's possible return to the Premier League (according to today's papers) sparked this for me. He was a great real life football, often dictating the play of a match, but in fantasy terms he was terrible.

Most of the time it enhances my enjoyment of watching football. In the odd occasion though if I have a player or two who are playing against United (I'm a United fan), then the feelings of conflict can distract from the event. In saying that though I've learned to cope with that and it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

Playing fantasy football definitely enhances a game if my captain does well, but it also helps because of all the analysis and stats...gives an insight into player form and team tactics which helps understand the game better and why certain decisions are being made by manager or player. Also makes you realise how terrible most TV football commentators are and how little they actually know about the game.

Well because of Fantasy Football I don't mind watching Aston Villa Vs QPR match which otherwise I would've avoided..so it does enlighten an interest of ours for matches which are not of our Favorite team!
But everything as 2 sides so does Fantasy Football..if it's a crucial match for your team suppose like a United Vs Liverpool match...United were leading 2-0 but I wanted Sturridge to also score so that I get points..which is not good..and his goal put pressure on United

I don't watch much top-flight football, but when I watch Oxford, I find automatically myself thinking about aspects such as who is assisting any goal - things I never really cared much about before.

FPL never enhances my enjoyment of live football and sometimes slightly distracts. I have to have some discipline about that because if FPL seriously affected how much I enjoy live games I would give up FPL.

As for whether watching games alters my perception of a player from a FPL point of view, that's a definite yes. You can assess form, confidence, movement off the ball, how the player fits in to team patterns, where on the pitch he plays and many other things live. These are not things easily available from statistics. For example it was the Chelsea-City game that demonstrated to me how classy Silva was and how central he is to City. As a result I brought him in on wildcard the week after that (ignoring "assists the assister" comments) and he has done very well since.

In particular I look at striker movement. I want the ones that are getting to the edge of the 6 yd box when the ball is wide. In my experience that's a sign of confidence and it doesn't remain static. There was a period this season when Costa was tending to drop to the edge of the penalty area when the ball was wide and I avoided captaining him during that period. More recently he has focused on the 6 yard box more and that's a positive sign for me in FPL terms.

FPL is an imprecise simulation of what goes on in a game so you have to understand how the simulation functions. This is what I have been learning in my first season. But I think the combination of FPL nous with real football understanding and observation from watching games with with some statistical measurement to check your assessments is the ideal blend.

Last season I transferred to a draft league and I have to say my enjoyment of football games have gone through the roof. Modric for example would be a beast in the scoring system my league uses.

Not sure if it enhances or detracts but it certainly makes me watch games I wouldn't usually.

I suppose it can enhance or detract depending on player involvement but when it comes to my own team I try and separate the two.

I do think I enjoyed football more last year when not playing FPL. There have been a few games that have been spoilt by it; the Spurs Chelsea game springs to mind. That was a fantastic match, but not owning Harry Kane dominated my thoughts the whole time. It also happened when I owned Baines; I'm an Everton fan, but if we won and conceded/Baines did nothing I'd be slightly disappointed.

However, it can obviously work the other way; Charlie Austin can grab a late goal in a QPR v Hull game and suddenly that brightens up your day, and you find yourself interested in matches that would otherwise be irrelevant.

I used to only check the scores and table standings. Didn't support any team and only caught the most noteworthy matches.

All changed when my friend badgered me into joining his ML last year. Now I watch the games (at least of the club I now support) and keep track of all teams. So Fantasy football is what got me into Real football.

As a Chelsea fan and non-chelsea defence owner earlier in the season. I always wanted the opposition to get a consolation goal to ruin the clean sheet for all those Terry and Ivan owners in my ML

        Shameful.

This can be a pain though. Sometimes wanting Costa to score (if he is my FPL captain) can affect my enjoyment of Hazard banging one in when he could have set one up for Diego. That's the kind of thinking I have to have discipline about.

Wherever possible I also try to avoid having players in my team when they are playing Chelsea, especially if I am going to the game. Too much contradiction and I don't like it. 😉

I went to Old Trafford recently v Spurs.

At 3-0 up Rose played a ball through to Kane - I won't lie that a little part of me wanted him to slot it away. I'm ashamed to say it but it's true.

Of course it enhances the enjoyment, you should see how intensely I cheer on a goalless draw between Hull and West Brom.

Playing FPL either enhances or detracts the enjoyment depending on the outcomes, but it sure increases the attention I pay to games not involving my team. In that way FPL is marketing genius.

Watching games is a double-edged sword. On the one hand you get that valuable visual information on how threatening players look that you just can't get from the stats. On the other hand you can overweight information from the games you happen to see. Like Simon March said on the scoutcast - you might see Cabella getting forward for Newcastle and decide he's a good target!

For me as I dont support any team in the Premier League fantasy football provides some reason to watch some of the football (although no much these days). Basically I view Premier League football as very different from football in other lower divisions (sounds obvious huh!), somehow less 'real' its almost like a shiny, polished, sanitised version, and FPL serves to keep me interested to a degree i guess. 🙂

This is an easy one for me since the team I support are currently languishing down in League 2. Therefore, it's easy to separate the two. I haven't really supported a Premier League side since George Best played for UTD ... Playing Fantasy Football has, however, hugely increased my interest and knowledge of the Prem and it's players, and being able to leave emotions aside when I think about Fantasy choices makes it a lot easier

Last day of the 2012/13 season being at Upton Park and watching Kevin Nolan score a hattrick was brilliant, but having him in my FPL midfield definitely enhanced my enjoyment 😀

In general I'd say it does enhance watching football matches, I enjoy sitting down for a few hours on a Sunday and seeing how my own and my rivals' fantasy assets do and the banter that comes with it after each goal/sending off etc.

I'm glad you asked this because I've been meaning to post a question like this for a while.

Pretty much agree with everyone that says FPL makes you look at real football with a warped view and usually for the worse.

It was bliss watching Liverpool V Man Utd the other day as I had no players involved and decided to put the 'What if Countinho/Sturridge etc scores?' to one side and just enjoy a game.

I guess it can add to to lower profile games, but it my experience FPL ruins enjoyment of real football.

He's nailed on, Rangel didn't even start every game (rotated with Richards) so it's obvious Monk didn't fancy either of his RB options, so . He's also played well and Swansea have kept a fair few clean sheets with him in the team.

Let me start a more controversial topic:

What do guys hate the most on this site?

For me it is easy, I can´t stand the "PlayOn" topics, nobody plays that game and has interest in it, so I don´t understand why people here promote it so much.

Nevertheless, I like most of the other content in this website, specially the fixtures analysis.

What about you? Is the "lol @ owners", or something else that you hate the most?

The Hot Topics given to games are to allow the game organisers to interact easily with our community and those playing the game. Can understand where your're coming from but they work well in that respect - appreciate that they only appeal to those getting involved. Hopefully not a big issue, though.

Now, I like questions like this.

Not so sure about hating anything but one thing that really hacks me off is the number of people who put up the same question without bothering to read the previous posts. This happens on a daily basis and really kills the forums.

Yep. I think we can take steps by working against this by launching Hot Topics on the key issue of the day and having better access to those topics. We have plans in that area.

I think that it is a formatting/layout issue. Unless u read back through a page or two of posts (which not everyone has time for or can be bothered to do) it is hard to keep track of what has or has not been said

Good point. Still very frustrating to read the same questions repeatedly.

Not sure what the official stance is on the matter

Far too much RMT type stuff. From some posters it is incessant.

I am interested in discussing FPL issues and options but not in selecting someone else's team for them or having others select mine.

I agree it can get a bit much at times. But if it helps others get better and learn from better/more experienced players then it is worth having

I don't mind some. Occasionally I will ask a "this player or that player" type question myself if I'm not sure. But the repetitive RMT stuff (often from the same people) gets too much sometimes, especially on Friday/Saturday.

i agree..and most people have at least 9 players out of 15 which are the teams..they should just ask "this player or that player" instead

I'm in two minds about RMT. They can get annoying when they're spammed page after page by the same person.

I don't really see much benefit from strictly a RMT either. If the person is providing the team with different choices of what they're considering then that I don't mind.

Context makes choices a lot easier.

Context is important. Otherwise it ends up with people suggesting others to get the same team as them. Then we get moans about everyone having the same team. 😉

I love this site, and appreciate the greatly the work that goes into it; there are no features or articles that I hate.

However, I do avoid it on match days; the "LOL @ ___ owners" and "wish I hadn't captained ____" 3 minutes into the match are very irritating, as is fake team news.

I don't mind nailed on but dislike season keeper and essential.

i cannot stand the "who to captain" posts

It's certainly better to make your own decisions but some people just need a helping hand.

I do agree to some extent that these posts aren't needed with the Captains poll but I think sometimes people want to see who different members are captaining.

Maybe a hot topic close to deadline would help?

I very much dislike comparisons of teams where the poster doesn't take out the duplicates. Sometimes you need to see them for context I suppose but generally it's just a big mess.

I think those who want to drop Cazorla should think a bit more about it.

Firstly, Ramsey beside Coquelin is far more compact that Cazorla beside Coquelin, can't see Wenger dropping Ramsey for the run-in.
Now, Giroud at ST and Sanchez at RW will also play most of the rest of the games. Best players at the position.

That leaves us with CAM and LW in the 4-2-3-1. Do you really see Cazorla getting dropped after the season he has had? NO. Ozil with the form he is in? NO. I see Walcott/Welbeck are both viable options, but would be on the bench if these 6 are fit.

That leaves us with a front 6 of.

    -----------Coquelin-----Ramsey
    --Sanchez------Cazorla---------Ozil
    -----------------------Giroud

Want to drop the no 10 who is on pens for one of the most attacking teams in the league, who have a DGW up next? You might want to think again. 😉

or he could get dropped because he has already been dropped so you would be keeping an £8+ mil player who sits on the bench. works both ways
