The Rough With the Smooth – Gameweek 33

Welcome to the latest in our new regular article series gathering our community’s tales of joy and woe from the last Gameweek in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game. This will look at the key decisions made that proved either inspired or saw overall ranks plummet. We also find out what lessons our community has learned from their key captaincy, transfer and benching decisions over the week.

This week saw those who shunned Crystal Palace’s assets and opt for Leicester players grab the bragging rights in Gameweek 33’s seven-fixture schedule.

The Rough

Doolittle is seeing the bright side of ditching Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez and Chelsea’s Loic Remy, neither of whom played, for Cesc Fabregas and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy. Neither of his new recruits gained any attacking Fantasy Premier League points and the move meant he left West Brom’s Craig Dawson and his six FPL points on the bench. He said: “My rank dropped 600 FPL places, but I’m well set for Gameweek 34. Long term it should pay off.”

Crystal Palace’s Yannick Bolasie gave those who drafted him in ahead of the Eagles fixture with West Brom plenty of hope with a hat-trick in Gameweek 32. Alas, for KingMig84’s and others who recruited him, they were left with just one point for putting their faith in the midfielder in Gameweek 33.

C-Dawg Du Plessis will long remember that points hits can go terribly wrong after becoming another to draft in Vardy and Fabregas, this time as part of an 8-point hit. To make matters worse he captained David Silva, who was taken on off injured before gaining any potential attacking points. The sorry mess of a week saw him plummet from 5,000 in FPL to around 9,000 in the rankings. However, as with Dootlittle, he at least is set up nicely for Gameweek 34.

The Smooth

Leicester’s Wes Morgan, who accrued 11 FPL points, was the source of considerable joy among our smoothest managers in the community during Gameweek 33. TM245 spent a points hit to draft him in as well as Fabregas and Vardy. This more than paid for itself and prepares him well for Gameweek 34’s double fixtures for Chelsea and Leicester.

For Boss Barkley, Tom Heaton was the surprise hero. His penalty save and FPL bonus points meant he retained top spot in his mini-league. “Always have two playing keepers,” is his lesson learned from the week.

Kasper Schmeichel proved the perfect fillip for BantamPhil, who drafted in the Leicester stopper and his eight FPL points to jump 2,500 places in the rankings.

Dusan Citizen ignored considerable pressure to invest early in double Gameweek players or opt for form players such as Bolasie. Instead he went for Alexsander Kolorov, who was guaranteed a start for Manchester City following an injury to Gael Clichy. His modest jump in the rankings of just 24 places and clean sheet points from the defender may not seem much but the transfer was fun, which sometime transcends mere rank and points. “Owning Kolarov was so exciting,” he beamed.

The Dimitar Berbatov smooth operator of the week award goes to McNulty, who sold Arsenal’s Hector Bellerin, who had a blank fixture, for Morgan. His non-playing bench also meant he was forced to play two West Brom defenders, who earned him two lots of surprise clean sheet points and even Jose Fonte scored assist points for him. As the euphoria died down into Sunday evening he found himself with a Gameweek rank of around 2,000 and into the top 100 overall for the first time ever. “I guess the lesson might be that relegation battlers can be a good source of points for the final run in of games,” he said.

...Getting in Baines was a bit of both for me last GW...he scored 7 pts but had he taken(and converted the penalty) he could have had 15pts.

      😕

Am still not sure of drafting in Hendo for -4. Would be transferring Boyd to him, which although in itself not much of a problem, it leaves me with benching headaches with having to bench Kane or Vardy next week. Mightn't Hendo's points potential not take a dip with Gerrard back...?

Worth taking a hit for PVA->Schlupp/Bruce and if so which of the 2? Already on -12 with 6 DGWs in team already (3 each from LIV and CHE).

Brought in Huth, Morgan and Ciabasso for a -8 scored 75 points

    He who dares...

Didn't mention it before but also transferred Boyd to Philips, kun to Trekkers and captained Austin last DGW.... Scoring 113 points...

On a role moved up 21k in 3 weeks, now about 6K rank....

Only mistake I have made is I swapped Austin for Remy GW 32
