Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Gameweek 33 – Sunday

Sergio Aguero is amongst the goals as City sweep aside West Ham, with Jesus Navas providing a pair of assists in the 2-0 win. Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen both find the net as Spurs return to winning ways, whilst Christian Benteke’s goal-getting form helps clinch Villa a place in the FA Cup Final, as Liverpool fail to impress ahead of their double Gameweek 34.

Kane leaves it late against floundering Magpies

Harry Kane netted his 20th league goal of the season – and drew level with Sergio Aguero atop the scoring leaderboard – as Tottenham Hotspur recorded a 3-1 victory over John Carver’s struggling Newcastle United outfit. The England international registered for the first time in three matches, having not previously drawn consecutive blanks since Gameweek 14.

In light of Kane’s return to the scoresheet, his 50% ownership will likely be confident in retaining the striker’s services for the remainder of the campaign. Although the Lilywhites weekend trip to St Mary’s looks tricky, given that the Saints have 11 home clean sheets, their final four matches (MCI, sto, HUL, eve) bode well for further returns, with Kane’s recent braces against Chelsea and Arsenal underlining his fixture-proof appeal.

Christian Eriksen (8.3) snapped a nine-match goalless streak when his cross from a free-kick evaded everyone and nestled into the bottom corner – causing the 19,000 Fantasy managers that shipped him out this Gameweek to rue their decision. Nonetheless, with a double for Chelsea and Liverpool on the cards next Gameweek, Eriksen looks poised for a major exodus this week – indeed, over 26,000 FPL managers have already parted company in spite of his weekend strike.

Nacer Chadli also reaffirmed his finishing prowess at St James’ Park, curling in a 25-yard opener for the hosts all of his own making. The 6.2-priced midfielder now has nine goals this campaign and remains a tempting alternative for Tottenham coverage beyond Kane and Eriksen, though in all honesty, few will be looking to invest in Spurs’ midfield at a time where our focus in very much on double Gameweeks 34 and 37.

Danny Rose was forced off in the 81st minute with a hamstring strain, making the much-improved Spurs left-back a doubt for the Saints clash on Saturday.

The Magpies slumped to their sixth successive defeat in Gameweek 33, scoring for only the second time in six league ties. Jack Colback tallied his fourth goal of the season, with the hosts managing just five shots on target throughout the counter. Notwithstanding Newcastle’s recent travails, their run-in comprises of five agreeable fixtures (SWA, lei, WBA, qpr, WHU) –  which offers hope that Carver can arrest their losing streak, with his side’s latest loss dragging them into the relegation dog-fight.

Aguero builds momentum in routine win

In the wake of his brace against rivals Manchester United last time out, Sergio Aguero notched a third goal in two outings as the Sky Blues recorded a comfortable 2-0 victory over West Ham United. Considering Diego Costa and Daniel Sturridge are both currently suffering from knocks, Aguero’s return to form renders him the prime pick among the high-priced forwards, with Manuel Pellegrini’s decision to retain a lone striker system proving crucial to his recent output.

City now embark on a favourable quintet of league clashes to close out the season, which includes three enticing home ties (AVL, QPR, SOU). Furthermore, a trip to Tottenham in Gameweek 35 will have Aguero licking his lips, given that the league’s joint-top scorer has bagged seven goals in City’s last three matches against the North London club.

There were initital fears that David Silva had broken his cheekbone following a collision with Hammers enforcer Cheikhou Kouyate 16 minutes from time. However, the former Valencia midfielder was discharged from hospital later that day after being given the all-clear by the doctors.

Jesus Navas grabbed the assists for both of City’s goals, with the first being an own goal from centre-back James Collins, who diverted an attempted headed clearance over a back-pedalling Adrian. Despite Navas’ 12-points haul, the 7.2-priced winger’s non-existent goal threat limits his appeal in the coming weeks.

Manager Manuel Pellegrini named four changes for West Ham’s visit, with Eliaquim Mangala and Aleksandar Kolarov coming in for the injured Vincent Kompany and Gael Clichy as the champions earned a fourth successive home clean sheet.

Sam Allardyce’s men have just two wins in 12 to their name following the defeat to City, following another fruitless afternoon from an attacking standpoint. A tally of seven goals in the last 11 Gameweeks brings to light the Irons’ faltering forward line, with forwards Enner Valencia and Diafro Sakho combining for just five goals since Gameweek 11.

Coutinho nets consolation goal as Reds crash out

Philippe Coutinho underlined his scoring potential ahead of Liverpool’s double Gameweek, netting the opener against Aston Villa as the Reds fell to a 2-1 defeat in their FA cup semi-final. The Brazilian midfielder – 7.8 in FPL – is without a goal in five league ties, yet his performance at Wembley could lure some managers away from the in-form Jordan Henderson (6.7) and/or Raheem Sterling.

Sterling bagged the assist for Coutinho’s strike yet proved ineffectual against an organised Villains outfit, fashioning just one (off target) attempt throughout the 90 minutes as the lone striker in a 3-4-2-1 set-up. Daniel Sturridge’s absence from the matchday squad casts real doubts over his minutes for Liverpool’s double and suggests that if Brendan Rodgers continues with yesterday’s formation, Sterling looks the likeliest to lead the line ahead of the clashes with West Brom and Hull.

Brilliant Benteke leads Villa to cup final

Christian Benteke’s side-footed finish past Simon Mignolet served to further highlight the Belgian marksman’s red-hot form of late. Benteke (7.5) has notched eight goals in his previous six league ties yet still sits at a surprisingly low 2.8% ownership. Potential investors may well hold off on recruiting the imposing frontman until after Villa travel to Manchester City next weekend, given that the West Midlanders’ schedule turns a lot kinder from Gameweek 35 onwards (EVE, WHU, sou, BUR). With their confidence on the up in light of recent results, Tim Sherwood’s side look poised for a strong finish as they look to clinch survival and build momentum ahead of their Wembley final at the end of next month.

      1) My Move of Failure was bringing in Mata for Ozil, although a long term move but didn't provide a short term benefit.
      2) No effect in rank
      3) Nothing 😛

      Last week (GW32)

      1) My move of brilliance was Eriksen to Bolasie
      2) Game me a rise a 40K from 107K to 67K
      3) Keep taking Punts

Mixed bag with the hit I took; Sanchez and Remy to Fabregas and Vardy, so traded 0 points for 5 and set my team up nicely for this week. However, it did mean I benched Craig Dawson, who would have played had I not taken the hit, so I technically ended up 5 points down...

Rank dropped 600 places, but I'm well set for this week. Long term it should pay off.

      1. Keeping Remy - have a guess.
      2. Not too much, wish I had Dawson coming on instead of Mahrez, though.

      1. Cazorla to Bolasie (1 week bandwagon punt)
      2. Overall I moved up 52 places to 1,204.
      3. Nothing. Except...well actually, nothing. Although I did gain .1 team value.

      1. Jeff Schlupp picking up a cleanie while making his first start for my team after being benched last weekend. Also deciding to sell Sanchez for Fabregas instead of Eriksen and picking up his 9 pointer before I ship him this week.
      2. Moved up around 9,000 places to sit in 30k.
3.Eriksen is a troll who is incredibly frustrating to own and I might stick him on the list of people I will never own again.

      2. Could have been touching top 1k next GW had I not.

      1) The dullest move in the world, led to dull returns, Blind > Fagregas and Austin > Vardy. Gave me an extra 5 points.
      2) Moved up 5,000 places to around 48,000th
      3) Destined to hover around the 50k mark for the rest of the season

Brought in Baines/Murray for 9 points.
      - a bit annoyed Baines didn't take peno.
      - up a couple of 100 places
      - Pulis > Palce!
      - Put Baines back on Penos!

I brought in Big Wes Morgan with my FT (resisting a Palace midfielder transfer) and he bagged me a whopping 11 points, which helped me get back up in to the top 1K and win my H2H!

        1. What was your move of success or failure? Couldnt decide between Silva and Aguero for (c) thank god i did the latter hoping that Ageuro would be up top on his own. Had Aguero as (C) all week, nearly changed to Silva on deadline but didnt. Keeping Eriksen for 1 more week was a good idea, even though i nearly pressed the button, gone now though for the Fabergas double.
        2. What effect did it have on your rank? Back in the top 10,000 makes me feel real good.
        3. What have you learned from the move? If your not 100% on a move, dont do it.

      1. I brought in Kolarov and Bolasie in for a hit. Owning Kolarov was so exctining and he nearly scored a goal. Expected more from Bolasie tho.
      2. Gone from 7989 to 7965
      3. Don't go for a crowd and play on your gut feeling (Kolarov)

      1. Sanchez + Benteke > Silva + Murray. Consider it a big, fat "meh"
      2. Did it to protect my ML lead as I knew Murray would be a popular pick and Silva had good chance of a haul.
      3. Gut told me an Everton defender should be my transfer. Lesson learned - sometimes focusing too much on other teams will lead to a missed opportunity. The cliche "play your own game" does mean something 😯

      Lets try again...

      1. Picking Morgan over Huth for attacking potential and getting a bonus clean sheet.
      2. A slight improvement.
      3. Sometimes its better to go with 10 than take a hit to field a guaranteed eleven. Was considering Remy to Nugent

Best GW of the season for me! Sold Bellerin to free up an Arsenal spot and got in Wes Morgan who got 11 pts. My bench (or lack of it) meant I was forced to play double Palace defence with Myhill and Lescott. Ivanovic got a clean sheet and even Fonte chipped in with an assist meaning I got a full house of defender points.

Had the usual suspects in attack with Hazard, Aguero and Kane getting goals and Eriksen finally got himself in the points. Only downside was Remy as I didn’t have a starting sub to replace him with but ended up with a 2k GW rank and into the top 100 for the first time ever! I guess the lesson might be that relegation battlers can be a good source of points for the final run in of games.

Brought in Vardy and Cesc for -8 with dgw in mind and decided to make up the difference with a Silva (c) punt.... Just awful. Dropped from 5k to 9k.

Eriksen scored. Eriksen gave me points. At the 11th GW I owned him, he finally gave me 5 points (only 2 assists prior to this).

It boosted me from around 6.5-7k to 5k.

Morale: Eriksen is love, Eriksen is life.

      1. I kept Remy, replacement would have scored 2 points and cost me a hit in GW34 so maybe this was a success
      2. No autosubs but only 2 points lost so minimal effect
      3. Stuff that cannot be repeated on the Scoutcast

My one and only transfer was a success by bringing in Schmeichel for Pantilimon for an 8 point gain plus another DGW player for next week. I also kept Remy but wasn't too disastrous as Dawson came off the bench with six. I was the only one of all 57 players left in Last Man Standing to captain Silva instead of Aguero and survived nevertheless. A rank jump of 2.5K means Gameweek 33 has left me quite content 🙂

      1) DIdn't go for the Palace boys, went with Cambiasso and Vardy (-4) as I needed to field 11 and of course don't have the WC so planning ahead.
Getting Remy for Aguero continues to haunt me, got him before the QPR game and down 18 points so far on the deal and not even sure if I'll get two games out of him in the DGW.

Also made Silva captain, despite talking up Hazard's chances.

      2) 47-4, only a small drop back to 71K, keep yoyo-ing around between 65K and 71K last few GWs.

      3) Avoiding the Palace boys in a plum fixture for Liec players, needed to be done and thankfully it paid off. Got lucky with that and two extra DGWs players.

Success -- brought in three dgw players for -4 a week early since I could only play seven, so the hit was only -2. Morgan more than paid for that on his own, and I am a fan of packaging risky moves like this so any one of the three can hit big. The blanks for my other two moves, Fabregas and Vardy, didn't hurt in this scenario.

Failures -- didn't apply that same logic to a transfer of Hamer to Schmeichel as I was too afraid of its sideways potential.
--Kane scored in injury time, though hopefully that makes people keep him and still gives me a spot as a differential.

Takeaway -- Wild cards are vastly overrated for the run up, IMO. I will hopefully get the same squad or more as a wild carder would for what will amount to a cost of -4 each in 31/34/37. That's twelve points spread out over seven weeks, or less than two points per week. People saying a late season WC is worth 20-30 pts are maybe giving it a bit too much credit for this season.

    Mignolet
    Ivanovic - Huth - Bertrand
    Sterling (C) - Henderson - Siggy - Hazard - Silva

Can I get another consensus please.

Hows this looking for a WC team? Trying to set up for both doubles and the rest of the season equally.

    Schmeichel
    Moreno Ivanovic Alderweireld
    Sanchez Sterling(vc) Hazard(c) Coutinho
    Aguero Giroud Kane

    Bench: Phillips VanAanholt Cameron

Not going for a DGW striker because nobody appeals to me and I like my fwd line.
Only 2 Chelsea could be a risk but I don’t want to double up at the back and I would rather have Sterling than Fab in midfield.

Ozil is the man to get from arsenal if you target midfielder from them. Or Sanchez, Rambo.

Unfortunately for Santi, he is playing too deep now. Still on penos though

Sanchez isnt worth his price tag.

Ramsey and Ozil are both better picks but of course Giroud is the best value Gunner.

Is it time to ditch Silva? Regardless of the potential injury, with all of the Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal mids with upcoming DGWs, is casting off Silva the way to go? The alternative, of course, may be to ditch Hazard GW35...does anyone fancy that?

And a question along similar lines, is it time to abandon double Saints defence? With no Champions League realistically to play for and a few injury concerns/Clyne's future in doubt, are they now going to be as reliable as they have been?

Do you agree with people who say that a -4 hit is really a -2 in a dgw? This seems to be something that is commonly said to justify more hits but I would say it only applies if you are unable to field 11 players without a hit. For instance if someone transfers out Eriksen for Sterling for -4 and Eriksen gets 7 points from his game against Southampton then Sterling needs at least 11 from his games against West Brom and Hull to justify the transfer. I'm not saying a move like this isn't worth it (I'll probably take - 8 this week) but thinking of a move like this as a -2 really doesn't seem to make sense

I agree that thinking of a hit as being -2 or -4 is too simplistic. The hit breaks even if the team score before deducting the -4 is 4 points greater than it would have been without taking a hit. The difference in a double game-week is that the new player has two games over which to achieve this increase. Replacing a player also has an effect on subsequent game-weeks.

The immediate value of a hit is (the difference between the new player's total score for the game-week and that of the player whom he replaces in the starting eleven) + (the difference between the new player's score and that of the player whom he replaces as captain, if you captain him) - 4.

This is a huge question! Henderson was the first name I chose from Liverpool before considering the potential impact of Gerrard. They undoubtedly play better without him and need to win if they want any chance of Champions League qualification. But starting him against Villa demonstrated that Rodgers will pander to the sentimentality of the situation. Will he continue to do so?

Interesting. I have given up on trying to catch her this year and trying to help get her team in the top 1,000. Not that she needs the help.

It is frustrating tho when she shouts across the living room asking advice about a certain player who she is considering for the weeks transfer. I get the blame if a transfer I have suggested fails but if one does well, it's all her.

So who is your DGW differential? Herd mentality/risk assessment means everyone has Hazard and Sterling, but what else?

I'm going for Gerrard. I think he'll get 180 minutes and he's on pens. He can still get back to back double figures on his day.

Thats a seriously wild pick. Lucas could return from injury and Allen could play. Why are you so confident he'll get 180mins?

    2. Holmes
      • 10 Years
      9 years, 20 days ago

Skrtel(c). No Leicester player is massive differential 😛

    3. DF

I gave that some thought, but decided against it. I reckon his minutes will be closer to 18 than 180. What do you know that I've missed? Surely he'll start the last home game, out of some sort of nostalgia type bollocks but he's not good enough to get in their team on merit?

I'm gonna be without sanchez for the rest of the season. That makes me sad.
Best I can do for 37 is Giroud Ozil and Ransey. Not good enough I reckon.

I think ozil needs to be sanchez really. Hope I'm wrong of course.

If Villa are safe going into the final game of the season would Benteke get rested with the cup final in mind?

Although I might be a tad controversial if he played a weakened side and Burnly's fate was still in the balance. I don't think a team has done that before. Perhaps he'll get hauled off early instead.

Man Utd played a team of kids against Hull on the last game of the season when they needed points to stay up - Man U won and Newcastle lost so it was irrelevant in the end but still...

Silva is going to play against Aston Villa, right?

Going to move for Sterling but can't decide if I'd rather trade him for Silva or Siggy.

    Opinions?
