Niggling injuries and so-so form stymied Oscar’s attempt at a quick start to the 2014/15 Premier League season. The Brazilian starlet notched one assist in three appearances over the opening five Gameweeks, prompting nearly 100,000 early uptakers to sanction his sale. That decision proved rash, however, when Oscar subsequently recorded three goals and one assist in his next five outings.

Oscar continued to deliver consistent attacking returns right through to mid-January, before a downturn in form resulted in a reduced role. Ultimately, he proved to be a fine pick-up when handed an unbroken run of starts and clearly harbours the potential to be a top-tier Fantasy recruit. Could next season beckon in such an evolution?

Key Factors

  • What with his involvement in the 2011 U20 World Cup, 2012 London Olympics, 2013 Confederations Cup and 2014 World Cup, Oscar hasn’t been afforded a prolonged summer break for over four years. That’s set to change this year, though, by virtue of the fact he sustained a knock at the tail-end of the Premier League season and has subsequently been ruled out of Brazil’s Copa America squad. Blues boss Jose Mourinho is confident that a lengthy rejuvenation period will do wonders for Oscar’s progression as a player, setting him up to emulate the heroics of Eden Hazard during Chelsea’s triumphant title-winning campaign. Although rumours have surfaced suggesting that Oscar could be deemed surplus to requirements this transfer window – a theory strengthened by his bit-part role in the second half of the season – Mourinho’s quotes regarding the player dispel that notion:

“Someone like Oscar, for example, is a fabulous player but he’s never had a pre-season in his life. He’s always been playing in tournaments everywhere, he’s never had a rest. Now, because he’s injured he’s not going to the Copa America and I have a feeling that next year Oscar can have the same kind of evolution as Hazard had this season. I’m happy with my squad and I have to respect the people that gave us the title.”

  • Oscar was pitched at a starting value of 8.5 in the Fantasy Premier League season just passed. Considering that he notched a single assist from Gameweek 23 onwards – causing his value to plummet to 6.9 – it’s likely he’ll remain in the mid-price bracket next term. That being said, Oscar’s value as a Fantasy asset when fit and firing shouldn’t be underestimated; the former Internacional midfielder carded six goals and seven assists in the first 22 Gameweeks, drawing blanks in just eight starts. Furthermore, Oscar displayed a capacity for big-hitting returns that was on par with Cesc Fabregas, having matched his four 10+ points hauls. Couple this with his keen eye for goal and Oscar could well be the most valuable route into the champions’ squad next season if he can cement that number ten berth.

  • On that note, Hazard and Fabregas are – save for any high-powered additions to Chelsea’s attack – set to remain as the premier midfield picks in Mourinho’s set-up. This should – security of starts permitting – render Oscar an enticing differential with the potential to flourish into a top pick if he enjoys a sustained run of starts. If Oscar emerges as a viable alternative, it would free up significant funds that would facilitate the recruitment of a myriad other high-priced midfielders, with the likes of Alexis Sanchez and David Silva topping many a preliminary shopping list.

  • Burrowing deeper into the underlying statistics, Oscar registered more assists (eight) than his previous two campaigns at the London club, despite clocking the fewest number of minutes (2021) since his switch to the Premier League. In terms of his goal threat, the Brazilian schemer fashioned shooting attempts at the sixth-fastest rate (28.8 minutes per chance) among those players that tallied at least 1500 minutes of pitch time. This figure compares very favourably to the likes of Hazard (45.2 minutes) and Fabregas (70.3 minutes), with Diego Costa (28.1 minutes) and Loic Remy (24.6 minutes) the only individuals in Chelsea’s camp boasting superior numbers. To further illustrate Oscar’s proclivity for carving out shooting opportunities, he ranked joint-eight among all midfielders with regards to shots inside the box (38), in spite of his above-mentioned poverty of minutes.

So Liverpool conceded 25% more goals than they conceded Big Chances. Shocking defence.

No, just ineresting. ManU are the only other team that conceded more goals than Big Chances, one more. Liverpool conceded 4 more.

What I mean is that conceding more goals than you concede big chances is by no means a sign of bad defending.

Just watched Kevin McCloud's Escape to the Wild. Fascinating and phenomenal are the words I'd used to describe the family in that episode who packed in their normal jobs in the UK to head to a small island off the cost of Tonga, build their own house from materials on the island and now live their off the grid. Really a good watch if anybody has access to it.

Based off of the work of RedLightning, Ludo, Balders and a few others I'm sure...best subs combinations for their starters is this:

        Pantilimon
        Terry Ivanovic Clyne
        Hazard Sanchez Silva Siggy
        Aguero(c) Kane(vc) Austin

        Heaton Janmaat Bellerin Boyd

Running further tests changing the starting spots of Clyne, Siggy and Austin now.

Interesting. Janmaat a bit of a surprise, especially as the first sub, for his ppg was unimpressive. But he indeed scored very punctually, so if that rotates well with Kane's absence and first team injuries, I can see why it works.

I think it was his run of scoring coinciding with Silva's absence that got him in there. And his 12 points in the mass blank of GW27

Well, exactly something we were looking for then. I started by listing the absences of big players and big scores of some others, but never even considered Janmaat. Truly surprising.

He scored a grand total of 9 points in the 15 game-weeks he was not needed as an auto-sub.

Incredible - no wonder we overlooked him!

GKs and C/VC are already the best possible scenario (Well Costa(c)/Aguero(vc) is slightly better but Costa is far too expensive for this)

Apologies, your total of 2466 is correct.

Boyd does not lose his 2 points from GW33, so he only drops to 26 in 6 GWs.

Well done Billy, but I make your total 2464 (6 points behind the champion).

Janmaat scores an incredible 109, which was 22 more than Bertrand's 87, but Boyd loses 3 auto-sub appearances (GWs 24, 25 and 33) and drops from 33 points in 8 GWs to 24 in 5.

The inclusion of Janmaat might however possibly open up a few new options.

That's just the best possible with the starting XI we had the other day. I'm checking further possibilities now...

Streamlined the macro. First 6m runs took like 9 days , but when it crashed and I lost 2m of those I got it to do ~1.5m/hr so a slight improvement lol

The logic there will be far simpler than the 4-3-3 one I suspect (and that will probably put you off right away 😀 ) At least with 3-4-3 you've got the basic premise that only defenders can replace defenders.

Anyway, time to leave my computer to crunch while I push out zzz

i was working on this 10 days ago just to make one dead team and comapare with best scores. Forster/Schmeichel was goalkeepers combo (total 168 points) and Colback of the bench.

If that can help somehow. 🙂

Those are certainly great options and Colback comes out in a lot of the highest scoring combos. Best GKs (value-wise anyway) are Panti/Heaton with 173 points, only 4 points less than Migs/Heaton and Cech/Fabianski but they're more expensive so not worth it.

Barca had wanted him to sign an extension for ages, but they were hesitant in giving Alves the amount of money he wanted, and the length of contract he wanted. (as he is into his 30's)

I'm pretty sure Alves was playing hardball, knowing Barca had a transfer ban, but I certainly agree that it was strange by Alves to make life so difficult for Barca.

Leaving on a ft is what you're missing here 😉 Even the Barcelona president talked about how the ball was in his court, they had offered the best contract they could but he was still not sure!

Though, tbh, quite happy he is staying at Barcelona. 32 is a bit old to adapt to the PL if he did sign...

It would be nice to see Oscar around the 7.0mill price bracket. I have a feeling that midfield places will be at a premium for me with a likely 3-5-2.

    From Sky

Boca Juniors are preparing to launch a bid to bring Carlos Tevez back to the club, their president Daniel Angelici has told Ole.

Tevez, who began his career at Boca, has repeatedly spoken of his desire to return to the Argentine giants.

His terrific form at Juventus this term has prompted interest in his services from Atletico Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, but the two European sides will face competition as Angelici has admitted that he is keen to bring the 31-year-old back to Buenos Aires as soon as possible.

“That [he] returns is a dream, but we have to see when it can become a reality,” he said. “That depends more on the will of the player than that of the club, the doors are open. He has one more year left on his contract with Juventus and we have to be respectful.

“He told me that he was going to finish his career at Boca. Tomorrow (Tuesday) I will call Carlitos to see how he is and to start to talk.”

I think he'll definitely improve on this season. He dramatically quickened his play form the first few months of the season (passing quicker), and he built a good understanding with Mesut.

The quality of his play though does certainly reduce as he physically strains, which is why his returns were better in the beginning of the season, and once we had gone out of the CL. It's for this reason that I'm hesitant in starting with him, especially given the fact that he will be playing 90 mins a match in a high intensity team, in hot conditions.

My team will almost certainly exclude most if not all South Americans.

Aye..they could well be iffy picks....I think Sanchez is the best player in the prem, not just in terms of what he does on the pitch but the influence he has with his team mates and the club as a whole. He's your best chance of a title in a long time.

I just think Ozil ties everything together, and makes everyone better. Sanchez is a bit like Ronaldo, in that he makes a huge contribution, but outside of his own game I don't think he influences much.

I reckon Ox, Theo, Welbeck etc could fill in for Sanchez (alebit not do as well of course), but without Ozil the whole thing would fall apart.

Just my opinion of course. 😀

But Sanchez has such a great attitude where Ronaldo just sulks if he doesn't get his way and Ozil drifts out of games rather than rolling his sleeves up. There aren't many outstanding midfielders who aren't primadonnas.

It certainly seems to help keep a goalie on his game knowing there is a top keeper waiting to step into their place if they mess up a few times. Hart could do with one.

          http://www.standard.co.uk/sport/women-should-play-football-with-men-7082783.html

Not sure about other leagues. I think you face a problem (even if the quality was the same) of the fact that it's a contact sport. Firstly, men might not feel comfortable being physical against women, and I'm sure you can imagine some 'circumstances' that might occur during corners for example.

Occasionally it can be a tough issue purely from a build perspective. For example, in GAA, which is more contact than soccer, occasionally a girl would be fielded in a team that we played. And it was difficult because if a couple of the stronger lads shouldered her off the ball, the ref tended to give a free/some of the guys didn't want to go in and mince a girl.

I absolutely agree with you on a skill stand point etc. and frequently play with a couple of friends who are girls in 5 aside (both former Irish players). They would both say they much prefer playing with boys as the intensity is higher and it is faster which is good for them, plus there's nothing better than watching some lad think a girl is rubbish only for her to skin him.

See this is where the problem lies. Players might have a problem mincing a women, presumably because they expect her to be weaker, but they would have no problem bullying Messi off the ball (if they got close enough) and he's built like a school girl and himself could get bullied off the ball by most women.

You're absolutely correct on that. So it is a case of the current societal constructs getting in the way, which is a pain of course. However, looking to other sports, what would we say of a woman's stamina in high performance situations compared to a male? For example, female tennis is 3 sets compared to 5. Is that an endurance thing? So equate that to male football, how frequently do teams buy a player they think will only last 45 minutes in a match? Would it mean women wound up being excluded from bigger teams because men have a perceived greater endurance? (Genuinely, I am not saying that men do have greater endurance, but I believe it has always been considered in sports that they do).

I think that this aspect is just encompassed within the 'quality' aspect. Physical capabilities are as much criteria for a player as technical abilities. I don't think quality is relevant in asking whether they should play with men, rather than if they can.

Also, men are bigger on average, stronger on average, and have greater levels of testosterone which is like an in-built steroid system. I've played mixed hockey, and the difference is stark. I've even played with and against a girl who played in an 'England High Performance squad', and frankly she wasn't very good.

I would agree. At the very highest level of sports which have great provisions for both men and women we still see segregation. Despite both presumably having similar technique and technical abilities, the physical must be considered.

As I say, I play very often with two former Irish players, neither of them stand out at all when we play, but on the pitch with their teams they are the star players.

"If a guy feels uncomfortable that would be his problem."

You say that, but whether or not you feel comfortable with it shouldn't be a parameter in the game.

Secondly, we live in a society where any physical excursion by a man over a woman is deeply frowned upon. The old 'you should never hit a woman' cliche as an example.

"And they should watch where they put their hands anyway."

It's not necessarily hands, but often players are almost grinding on each other. Hands are also on each other, shirts are being pulled etc. I just really don't think it's a good idea.

                I hear what you're saying.

Let's take your point about "grinding" on each other. (I know you don't mean literally btw ha)... What you're saying is it's basically a sexual reason. So in the men's game would the same apply if the men knew they were playing against a gay guy? I would still say that it's their problem if they were uncomfortable. They might feel that way initially but after a while it would be normal.

I'm also a believer that putting your hands on a woman aggressively is just as wrong as if it's on a man, but that's a whole different can of worms 😉

I agree with this, but it's just not the way it is, in any context of our society. Take this for example: http://www.ryot.org/domestic-violence-against-men/698317 Threats to call the police against the men, yet laughs when roles are reversed.

On the gay thing, it's not that I thought the men would be uncomfortable, I thought the woman might be. Would a gay man feel uncomfortable? Probably not. But again it's the difference in societal constructs based on gender.

I'm not sure. Some say there's nothing in the rules but any possible transfer would be blocked, yet I really have no idea and that is all second hand info.

The impression I have is that it is entirely segregated.

A really great read comparing Neymar to Marta, Brazil's best female player (she is an example of how good women could be if they had the opportunity imo).

          http://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/06/neymar-marta-world-cup-brazil/394856/

And here she is playing a friendly with the likes of Ronaldo and Zidane vs Young Boys.

Didier Frenay, an advisor of the Belgian international, told the German paper that De Bruyne is going nowhere.

"Kevin is happy being at VfL Wolfsburg," he said. "He has decided to undergo the next step of his development as a player also at VfL Wolfsburg. VfL Wolfsburg is the only club he is thinking about!"

Jacking up the price of that City transfer so.
