Fantasy Premier League – Player List Analysis – Budget Midfielders

After assessing the Goalkeepers, Budget Defenders, Mid-Price Defenders and Premium Defenders in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, we now focus our attentions further up the park.

Prior to our assessment, it’s worth noting the changes to the BPS scoring system this term. The decrease to the BPS for pass completion will hit those players who ply their trade for dominant teams, though in truth, that won’t hurt many budget attacking options hard – the likes of Nemanja Matic and Gareth Barry will be the chief protagonists in the cut-price bracket. There’s also the improved BPS changes for successful tackles, which will certainly benefit Matic, given that he made more (100) than any player in the Premier League last season.

We start off, then, with a look at what’s on offer at 5.0 and under as Fantasy managers scour the market for this year’s George Boyd or Matty Phillips…

Arsenal’s Francis Coquelin is, at the very least, a reliable starter at 4.5. Having been named in the first XI in 19 of the final 20 league fixtures, his defensive qualities afforded the Gunners a better overall balance last term, though given he failed to produce any attacking returns, you’ll be getting three-point returns at best here.

Villa’s new signing Idrissa Gueye has been priced at just 5.0 and boasts a relatively decent scoring record in 2014/15, arriving on the back of four goals and a pair of assists for Lille last term. Charles N’Zogbia and Scott Sinclair also come in at 5.0 but will need to force their way into the starting XI to have any chance of coming into consideration, with Jack Grealish expected to nail down one of the wide roles. Ashley Westwood sets you back 4.5 but with a single assist last term, he offers little prospect of attacking returns. With Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six, though, Tim Sherwood’s side could be ones to monitor.

As mentioned in previous articles, Villa rotate home/away with Midlands neighbours West Brom over the 38 Gameweeks. Baggies skipper Darren Fletcher and Claudio Yacob (4.5 apiece) both started 15 of Tony Pulis’ 18 matches in charge last term and will at least offer security of starts in the centre of the park. Fletcher scored once after arriving at the Hawthorns, whilst James Morrison (5.0), who also started all but three of the fixtures under the new manager, produced two goals and an assist last term. New boy James McClean (5.0) could attract investment if Pulis affords the industrious winger a run of starts on the left flank – he chalked up six goals and seven assists in the previous campaign but faces competition from Callum McManaman (5.0).

Harry Arter could be an option for Championship winners Bournemouth – priced at just 5.0, he bagged nine goals and three assists last time out. Former Norwich man Andrew Surman looks the likeliest starter at 4.5 for the Cherries; despite sitting in the double-pivot, he managed three goals and six assists in 2014/15. Bournemouth have the kindest opening schedule over the first six Gameweeks, according to our season ticker – three strong home encounters (AVL, LEI, SUN) are complemented by a trip to Norwich.

Eddie Howe’s side rotate with fellow new boys Watford over the 38 Gameweeks, though the Hornets are currently undergoing a restructuring programme under Quique Sanchez Flores and it remains to be seen just how many of last season’s regulars will retain a starting role. The likes of Almen Abdi (5.0) racked up nine goals and two assists playing in “the hole”, while Ikechi Anya (4.5) proved to be a fine facilitator on the left flank, amassing seven assists. Etienne Capoue (5.0) and Valon Behrami (4.5) have already been drafted in and look the likely starters in the double-pivot in a 4-2-3-1, though the pair offer little in the way of attacking returns.

As mentioned above, Nemanja Matic looks set to be the chief beneficiary of the new BPS change for successful tackles. Coming in at just 5.0, he’s certainly very budget-friendly but his role in the Chelsea double-pivot produced just a goal and three assists last season – given we can only pick three players per team, few will be willing to turn to the Serbian as a viable option in the centre of the park.

Palace pair Mile Jedinak and James McArthur will set you back 5.0 apiece. The arrival of Yohan Cabaye places question marks over Alan Pardew’s plans in the centre of the park – should Cabaye be fielded in a deep-lying role, one of the duo look poised to miss out if the Eagles boss opts for a 4-2-3-1 set-up.

Everton’s Gareth Barry comes in at just 4.5 and started all but five of last season’s fixtures. Again, though, there’s uncertainty over Roberto Martinez’ intentions with Tom Cleverley adding an extra option in central midfield, whilst Steven Pienaar, Aiden McGeady and Leon Osman look far from certain starters at 5.0.

Claudio Ranieri’s arrival at Leicester may prove a source of frustration for Fantasy managers. Given that “The Tinkerman” is renowned for heavy rotation, the jury is very much out on Leicester’s potential regulars for the season ahead. Marc Albrighton staked a claim for inclusion with some strong displays at the end of last season – the 5.0-priced winger delivered two goals and assists in the Foxes’ concluding quintet of fixtures. The likes of Danny Drinkwater, Dean Hammond and Andy King are all 4.5 but we need to assess pre-season line-ups before considering any of them viable.

Liverpool’s Jordon Ibe is available at just 5.0 and was utilised as a right wing-back on a number of occasions during the latter part of 2014/15. With Brendan Rodgers keen to restructure, though, it remains to be seen whether the youngster can nail down a starting berth – right now, his acquisition looks too risky to justify.

Newcastle’s 5.0-priced Rolando Aarons will be hoping for a breakout season under new manager Steve McClaren. The fleet-footed 19-year-old scored and assisted in his second cameo last term, before succumbing to a hamstring injury that restricted him to two further appearances. Aarons has looked sharp in the close season, netting for the England U20s, though the arrival of new boy Georginio Wijnaldum could well restrict his pitch time.

Norwich ‘s Jonny Howson is available for 5.0 and produced nine goals and six assists from the centre of the park in the Championship last term. Wes Hoolahan (5.0) bagged five goals and ten assists, takes the majority of Norwich’s penalties and shares dead-ball duties with Nathan Redmond, though he’s less secure a starter – ten of his 39 appearances came off the bench. Graham Dorrans made 18 appearances (13 starts, five as a sub) after arriving at Carrow Road midway thorough last season. The former West Brom man – priced at 5.0 – bagged three goals and an assist and his top-flight experience could be key to the Canaries’ survival bid. Alex Tettey is cheaper at 4.5 but with 13 yellows to his name last year, may be best avoided.

With Morgan Schneiderlin now gone, Victor Wanyama looks a decent squad-filler at a price of just 4.5. The Kenyan struck three times for Southampton last time around, though his role in the double-pivot suggests he may struggle to replicate that goal-getting form, given he mustered just 28 attempts over the course of the previous campaign. Steven Davis (5.0) started 32 times in 2014/15 and although he managed just two assists, still produced 49 key passes for the Saints. Ronald Koeman’s side square up to three of last term’s top seven in the opening 13 rounds of fixtures.

Similarly, Tottenham’s Nabil Bentaleb and Ryan Mason are very budget-friendly options at 4.5 and 5.0 respectively. The duo offer little in the way of attacking output, though – Bentaleb chipped in with a pair of assists in 2014/15, whilst central midfield partner Mason managed a goal and four assists.

Sunderland’s spot-kick taker Jordi Gomez (5.0) had started to find his form under new manager Dick Advocaat before his previous season was ended by injury and could be worth considering if he can nail down a starting berth again. Lee Cattermole comes in at 4.5, though it’s fair to say he is more likely to produce yellow cards than attacking returns. The Black Cats have some very kind opening fixtures and face just three of last season’s top seven in the first 14 Gameweeks.

West Ham new boy Pedro Obiang is available for a cut-priced 5.0 – although he’s noted more for his tough tackling, he notched three times for Sampdoria in Serie A last term. The Hammers have four decent home matches (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) in the first seven Gameweeks to heighten their initial appeal.

Disagree with all those saying Silva won't keep it up this season. He was one of only four mids who managed over 200 touches in the box last season and that always means pts...and lots of them. One of only three players to achieve more than 6ppg and just 0.1 ppg behind Hazard....

New arrivals that have a greater tendency to get into goal scoring positions. Traditionally Silva likes to hang around the edge of the box but last season was different.

That's a good point & what I'm actually hoping happens.

With Sterling (probably) offering a full-time option along the wing this means that (hopefully) Silva will be allowed to play regularly in the center of City's attack.

Aguero w/ Silva in behind has proved to be a wonderful partnership in the past.
And, with Sterling providing them more space to operate by stretching defences out wide all the better for Silva's FPL prospects.

Note: Granted we need to see some preseason matches but, even if Sterling isn't scoring himself the knock-on effect should help City regardless.

I can see Silva potentially getting more assists but possibly less goals. I doubt Sterling will just stay on the wing. He will cut in a lot and get loads of touches inside the box.

            > I can see Silva potentially getting more assists but possibly less goals.

Sure, just as long as he remains in a central role.
History tells us that Silva's a much better threat from the middle than he is playing out wide.

            > I doubt Sterling will just stay on the wing.

Sure, I agree he'll run around where ever.
But, he will be lining up on the wing, he'll be a *winger*.
The knock on effect being Silva getting to play where he plays best & that's a facilitator in the middle of the attack.

Thinking we'll see a Fabs type season out of Silva.
            (Not 12g & 12a but, maybe more 8g & 16a?)
As you said, far fewer goals but, there's a chance we see big uptick in assists.

Time will tell sir, time will tell.

I'm put off by City's starting fixtures and the probability that the team will be somewhat largely rearranged. So, I may adopt a wait and see strategy with all City players.

Yeah i have him in now (mainly because i'll start without Aguero), and i'm not sure i'd replace him with anyone. Always struck me as streaky previously, but he's delivered a lot recently.

He was one of my first picks, but that's probably only because his form towards the end of last season is still fresh in my mind. He is a very streaky performer, taking all of his previous seasons into account. I'd rather wait and see how Sterling fits into the side.

I think he's a great choice but for me personally I can only fit one big hitter along with Aguero and Hazard and would like him to play in a different team than those two to have three great captain choices. Will go with Kane at the start and switch to Alexis later on.

Already yesterady's news, but in case people missed (I did), William Carvalho came back from U21's with a stress fracture of tibia, which has now confirmed to sideline him for up to 3 months.

Bears some relevance to transfer window, I don't expect clubs to buy him now, at least not as an immediate reinforcement.

On the other hand, this should bring him straight on Wenger's radar. 😉

I mean, he's just the type: a lauded young player with very little top level experience and already injured, and likely to move for a significantly reduced price for that reason. Although, admittedly, he's maybe 5-6-years too old for Arsene's taste.

And as injured, he would be a "long term backup" for Coquelin, which appears to be what Wenger is looking for! Perfect! Consider the deal done, you read it here first! 😀

Its a wait and see regarding Schweini imo. I would guess Schneiderlin takes the "matic role" and Schweini takes the "fabregas role" on uniteds midfield. If united starts scoring more goals, he will certainly have his shares of assists, and also chip in with a goal now and then.

But lets see. Not for gw1 imo.

If I'm planning to do an early WC, is it wise to have 2 non-playing 4m defenders?

The idea is to get a strong starting 11 and not having 0.5s tied up to cheap defenders.
Means maximum points potential and easy to catch early bandwagons as premium priced players allow more flexibility in transfer.

Yes, over the long-term, having a backup 2nd and 3rd bench might be useful ala Hutton last year.
But in this 3-4 GWs, how likely is your 'Francis' comes in and gets a CS on the same week your 'Walcott' is dropped?

The worst thing is they get injured but it's a transfer away. And you do still have you 'Wanyama' as 1st bench.

    Thoughts?

I'd want at least one 4.5m option. Mainly because you may not like your top 3's fixture for the week, or there's an injury. Having at least one covering option is worth the 0.5m there, i would say.

Having Haz myself but Fabregas is a nailed on proven FPL player without any questions marks. And no question marks over Fletcher for 4.5. I can see Mata, Chadli and Walcott not being fully nailed on so perhaps some question marks there.

Fabregas barely ddi anything from January onwards and he was ditched left right and centre.

              Why the change of thought?

I'm having no change of thought whatsoever. Yes, he was quiet after January but studies have shown he tends to start the season well, while Hazard usually needs some time to get going.

Walcott will start gw 1 at the very least
Mata is more than 50/50 for sure. ADM looks on his way so will be Depay and Mata on wings. Fabs 'needing to be haz' is not really a question mark. Normally i'm in the haz camp aswell but I prefer Costa early particiularly with his record on your boys.
Chadli is a beast. 160 pts from 2407 mins says it all

        Jaf 🙁

If henn signs - i'l just get both, henn is 4.0.

Darmian is a bit punty but man u are surely value in def this season with new look midfield

Wally will start gw 1 with Sanchez out as it stands, not a hard swap to another ARS mid. Cesc, what question marks? Mata's end of season form was very impressive, even though he may be out wide on paper will surely drift in and play pretty much as no 10. Chadli was only rotated during a period of recovering from injury/the passing of his father.

Why not J rod? Most seem to be goin with a promoted/unproven striker. I also like Sakho but looks like Wham are in the market for another striker

          Too punty for my liking.

I don't totally trust Walcott will start after last season. Mata always carries the threat of rot. Damien - that d was so poor last season.
Jrod needs to be monitored first after his lay off.

The only way is up for that defence, especially after signing Darmian, Schweinie and Schneiderlin. If they manage to keep DDG, I can see myself having a UTD def. Would probably not start with one though.

I don't think they are explosive enough. All of them might do better than Mane I just fancy Mane for his goal threat at the moment. I'm tempted by Özil and Mata if they deliver from the start. Not keen on Yaya or Cazorla and Ramsey is too much of a risk at the moment.

Too much upheaval at Soton... I think they'll be in for a bit of a shock without Foster, Schneiderlin, Toby and Clyne about to provide a solid platform to go on the attack with. They might spend most of their time on the backfoot, thus affecting Mane's potential.

He was the first name on my team sheet until I saw the heavy hitters in the £8.5 category.

I think he's OK early on. When EL group stage kicks in I'm out of there. 🙂 Fundamentally Southampton don't score enough goals though J-Rod may help a bit. But at only 0.5 less than some real big-hitters? Not really. He should be 7.5 max for me.

      Well...

The GK pair is OK for 9.0, apart from GW2 you have a decent rotation for 12 weeks.

Toby is a no for me at 5.0 because he plays for Spurs and they aren't great defensively. I'd shift him and Baker out and get 2 decent 4.5s like Olsson/Bassong and Coates. I'm also not sure Muniesa is the right Stoke defender to have, you'll need to watch in pre-season but Wilson or Wollscheid may be preferred.

The midfield is OK though I don't think Henderson is well priced. I'd rather go with a 5.5 like Atsu, Johnson or Van Ginkel and upgrade Kane to Costa. I'm also not sure Ramsey is the right Arsenal mid, personally I'd prefer Ozil. But if this is a team to last some time Eriksen is worth considering as an alternative. Lastly Depay mey be a better shout than Mata, you'll need to watch in pre-season and listen to Van Gaal's press conference on 7th/8th August.

Please note that this is a general assessment as I don't know what your strategy is. When you plan to use the first wildcard is quite important in how you select the squad.

Saints have amazing fixtures and you don't seem keen on Cedric? Do you just not rate him as a player?

I posted a RMT and am now happy with my selections. I think I will only make any changes in case of injury and the rare chance my players are dropped from their respective teams.

I'd like to pick your brains now. Is Wanayma not a defensive mid? Is he expecting to be more attacking now morgan has moved on?

I am seeing a new love for CB's and also something about a new point earner, can someone explain this please?

And I've dipped into this site over the last couple of years, is it worth becoming a full member?

    Thanks guys!

I like it although defence can be beneficial, may be worth strengthening

        Very good manager - surely that's pretty strong? 6.0, 5.0 and 4.5 X3?
