Scout Report – Jose Angel Crespo

Cordoba defender Jose Angel Crespo became Aston Villa’s fourth defensive recruit of the summer, after arriving earlier today for a reported fee of just £500,000. The 28-year-old follows Mark Bunn, Micah Richards and Jordan Amavi to the Midlands as Tim Sherwood continues to restructure his first-team squad.

Discussing the move with the club’s official website, Sherwood revealed he’s a long-term admirer of the new recruit:

“Jose is a player who has been on our radar for some time and we’re really pleased to secure his signature. He is an experienced player who has played in La Liga and Serie A, two of the strongest leagues in Europe, and from speaking to him I know he can’t wait to play for Aston Villa.”

The History

Born in Andalusia, Crespo worked his way up the youth ranks at Sevilla after joining them as a 15-year-old. After two years of training at their academy, he made his senior debut for Los Rojiblancos midway through the 2005/06 La Liga campaign. Crespo managed a further two league starts that term, spending the remainder of his time turning out for their reserve outfit.

Crespo earned just 23 first-team appearances at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán over the next three seasons while tallying three goals in 73 outings for the B team. In pursuit of a regular starting berth, the Spain U21 international then made the switch to Racing Santander for the 2009/10 campaign. Unfavoured during his stint with the Cantabria club, Crespo notched just 13 appearances over the course of the season.

Having been released by Sevilla in the summer of 2010, the Spaniard plotted a route to Serie B side Padova, where he chalked up one goal in 43 appearances. He then transferred to Serie A outfit Bologna the following summer, recording just seven appearances (three starts) during his debut campaign with the Red-Blues.

Crespo dropped down to Serie B for the 2012/13 season, carding 14 appearances in a year-long loan spell at Verona. With a return to Bologna harvesting only 10 appearances throughout the 2013/14 campaign, Crespo went out on loan to Cordoba last summer. Despite failing to register a single goal or assist across 27 appearances, Crespo signed a permanent deal with the Spanish club earlier this month before making his move to Villa.

At international level, he made a total of 15 appearances for the Spanish U19, U20 and U21 sides but has never been selected for senior duties.

The Prospects

The versatile Crespo offers Sherwood an option right across the back-four slots. Last season at Cordoba, he started 26 times – 14 as a centre-half, nine at left-back and three of the right of defence – whilst in his final year with Bologna, he primarily lined up on the right of midfield.

Whether he can do enough to justify a starting berth is another matter entirely. Crespo averaged less than 15 appearances per season over the past four years, with his most recent stint at Cordoba marking just the second time in his career that he’s been afforded a prolonged run of starts. Having accrued just 83 outings in the top tier of Spanish and Italian football, he may well prove no more than back-up in a defence that was hit hard by injuries in 2014/15.

Certainly, new boy Jordan Amavi looks nailed-on at left-back, given the significant outlay, and with Micah Richards and Ciaran Clark currently shaping up to be the Villains’ favoured centre-back partnership, one would imagine that Crespo needs to displace Alan Hutton at right-back to earn a spot in Tim Sherwood’s starting XI. Given that Leandro Bacuna also offers an option for that position, it looks by no mean certain that Crespo will find his way into the starting XI.

In terms of fixtures, Sherwood’s side have a decent start, with showdowns against Bournemouth, Palace, Sunderland, Leicester and West Brom in the first six. The fact that Villa conceded 57 times last term – the third worst defence in the top-flight – suggests investment may be hard to come by for Sherwood’s backline regulars.

Setting you back 4.5 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), Crespo is identically priced to Richards, though the former City defender looks a far more secure pick if you’re looking at cut-price options.

For those prepared to shell out more, Amavi (5.0) netted four goals last term and crafted more key passes (32) than all but seven Premier League defenders. Bacuna, meanwhile, has been stationed on the right of midfield in pre-season and could offer us an out-of-position option – the Dutchman racked up five assists as a right-back in just 983 minutes at the end of last term and also has a share of set-pieces.

Given that the likes of Southampton’s Cedric Soares and the West Brom defence are also available for 5.0, though, it looks very unlikely that many will be prepared to splash out on a porous backline that has plenty of convincing still to do.

    (a) Giroud and Mane
    or
    (b) Rooney and Ritchie + 0.5

    (a) creates some captaincy difficulties

    Evening lads and laddesses

Am torn on whether to go 5.5m + 4m GK or rotating 2 x 4.5m. I'd usually be firmly in the rotating camp, but getting Cech for 5.5m seems very good value for only 0.5m more. I'm not sure Butland + Ruddy will deliver similar returns.

If we add Cech's points last season to Courtois, that's 159 for 5.5m. There isn't an outfield player that is likely to get close.

I think one of the biggest problems is having an Arsenal spot taken up by a bloody goalie. Who's only ever gonna get you 6-7 points on a good day

Sorry Dunny, I meant Courtois. Think he's the better option ahead of Cech.

Hmmm i always try and get goalies from teams where i know i won't want any of their defenders... if that makes sense. Chelsea are right up at the top of the list for defenders i want. They basically all carry a good goal/attacking threat plus have the obvious clean sheet potential.

Just my take on it but i can see the attraction with the temptingly priced goalies this year

Hmm. With funds being so tight, I'm looking at it as:

            Ivanovic
            Terry
            Cahill + 0.5m
            Azpilicueta + 1m
            Courtois + 1.5m

Save points *should* make Courtois and Azpilicueta return similar points, which means is a Chelsea attacking threat worth 1-1.5m? It is, but only later in the season when your budget has increased, imo, Dunny.

It also saves 0.5m over Azpilicueta, and means you can play a Chelsea 'defender' plus the optimum budget defender rather than being forced to play a Stoke/Norwich keeper each week.

        yeah, meant Courtois.

The 0.5m extra spent on Courtois is saved by not buying Azpilicueta...

The Courtois option sorely tempted me.
Didn't like the idea of one of my Chelsea picks being a gk and preferred the 5m & 4.5m option.
Always chosen the rotating gk option & the bench option just adds an extra few points to that option potentially.

Definitely understand where you're coming from with that approach. It also gives you a backup keeper and potentially a FT saved should one GK get injured.

I'll muddle it over some more. I'd jump at Myhill is West Brom's home fixtures were favourable. Butland should be a solid pick, but not sure about Ruddy.

Some decent pairs, Adrian/Boruc looks really nice.
I'm punting on Panti/Krul - both could be very reliable although fixtures are good but not great.

See, i don't get that at all. Yes, save points are nice, but a CS is still 4 points plus there's the chance of save points on top of that. 9.5m for the Panti/Krul pairing. Surely Courtois is a better bet considering that frees up funds by downgrading Azpilicueta (assuming you have him)?

              I can't argue with that, it's a sound plan.
I like to know I don't need to waste a gk transfer until I wildcard and won't hav the frustration of a goalieless weekend for any reason be it resting, injury etc.
              Old fashioned thinking I guess.

              Yes, I do have Azpi.

Very interesting. Just realised I can have Courtois | Kolarov | Kosc instead of Butland/Ruddy | Azpi | Kosc.

With nailed 4.5s that is a very attractive option, especially as Kol is on pens with Yaya and Aguero out...

Yep, exactly. Courtois at 5.5m isn't appealing until you take into account if you don't get him, the majority are buying a Chelsea defender at 6m+. They've priced Courtois really cannily.

after GW2, would you prefer to change Azpi to 4.5 defender to get Kane for Lukaku or another inferior striker (Pele,Benteke, Giroud to maintain good defensive set up)

    going to play 3-4-3

    Azpi - Shaw - Mings + (O'shea+Targett)
    Hendo - Ramsey - Haz -Ritchie +(Bentaleb)
    Costa-Rooney-Lukaku

Ozil/ramsey/Caz is another story I will change it at the very end, maybe go for Ozil as he's nailed to start everygame and be the central man for them..

But i was about if I should go for Kane + 4.5 defender or

    Azpi / Kosc / Huth / O'Shea / 4/0

Have team fairly set but I keep changing midfield was looking for rotation paring for Ritchie from Bournmouth. The Watford choices are a bit up in the air as well as the fixtures. So I went for Ki from swansea as the rotation option.
It also solved the dilemma of Ozil/Walcott as it meant that I could then only afford Ozil.

Decided to go without Aguero and hope he stalls at the start of the season.

Sorry for waffling. I plan to look back at my comments in a few weeks to see what my ideas were!

Thanks for the feedback a few pages ago. Made some tweaks and have ended up here:

    Butland / Schmeichel
    Ivan / Williams / Janmaat / O'Shea (Targett)
Hazard / Silva / Hendo / Cabaye (Fletcher)
    Rooney / Giroud / Sakho

    Any good?

I ditched Costa and Benteke to bring in Rooney and Sakho. That frees up funds to get Silva in midfield and O'Shea at the back for rotation options. I like that Rooney and Silva are both proven prem performers for 5+ seasons now and overall this feels a bit more balanced.

Does anyone here play skysports fantasy football? I have a question regarding captaincy switches mid game week:

If I have my captaincy assigned to a player that plays at 12.30 saturday, can I then switch the captaincy to a player playing at 5.30 on saturday and still get points for both players? Or does it need to be on seperate days?

Choose from the following two for gameweek 1:

    A) Costa + Özil + Ritchie
    B) Lukaku + Walcott + Chadli

    RMT

    Ruddy Butland
    Mert Darmian Azpi O'Shea Huth
    Özil Fàbregas Mané Milner Fletcher
    Costa Rooney Sakho

still not sure wheather i prefer Ruddy or Schmeichel, i tend to ruddy just because i already have huth so it gives me more space for rotation.
I know about LVG quote on Darmian, but honestly i find it really hard to believe he wont be nailed on, after his great pre season and the amount spent on him.
still not sure about 2 things:
    1. ozil - atm i have him because i feel it's the safest choise. but i would be more than happy to find out that Wally planned to be on first 11 and change to him.
    2. sakho - i like him but my gut makes me want to change him to Deeney and spend the money elsewhere or save it for a cold day.

any thoughts? (RMT out of 10 will be welcomed :))

It's teams like this that make me think of what's possible without Hazard....
I like it. I'm facing the same questions around Schmakers and Wally. I'm currently on Schmeichel, but also have Huth. It's a calculated risk, I think Schmak has save points in him, and Huth is a huge goal threat for 4.5m.

You can't give a "0" for a backline that clearly is not that bad ... he's just slagging it because he doesn't like the players or doesn't have them himself.

Wouldn't say "wrong", it's just personal preference, but I don't mind giving reasons. 🙂

DF - Not keen on Monreal, just because he isn't a 100% starter, so not worth the price imo. Turner won't play. Yoshida too short term, rather another 4.5 - O'Shea, Martin, Elphick, Francis.

MF - Not a fan of Afellay pick at all, wait and see for me. Not a certain starter, far from it infact. Mahrez - meh. I prefer other 8.5-9.0 mids to Yaya personally...

              Forward line is great though.

for me, i'd upgrade GK. azpi and monreal also may not play, and affelay is a random pick as of now..

forward line will wreak havoc most weeks though 🙂 azpi-->liv DF (skrtel my choice).. use £0.5m to do butland--> panti.. that would definitely be progress imo

Azpi & Monreal are starters for sure , chelsea def >>>> liv def we all know that

why is monreal a sure starter? generally yes, but with the new BPS in place i think skrtel will be challenging for top scoring DEF, something i can't say for azpi. i just couldn't pay the extra £0.5m for him but it's all a metter of opinion. i just happen to know skrtel will outscore him this year 😛

i'd be willing to wager a substantial amount of euro that skrtel will outscore azpi.. would even lay a 3.5pt handicap 🙂

How does this line up sound for the first few gameweeks?

    Schmeichel / Butland

    Koscielny / Huth / Mings / Wollschield / Cedric

    Walcott / Ozil / Depay / Sterling / Anya

    Costa / Rooney / Wilson

Have been flitting between Sterling/Wilson/Anya or Milner/Ritchie/Deeney but I quite like the City coverage until Aguero is back...

    Any other thoughts or suggestions?

My only concersn would be with Darmian not being nailed on to start and possibly a bit much in defense with Toby. Could you downgrade him to a 4.0 (Targett) and then upgrade Chadli to Henderson / Milner?

      Otherwise looks pretty balanced

There's been mention of it & it would make sense to me.

Fab looks like fantastic value remembering his stats mostly came from the first half of last season and remember his figures from his Arsenal days. Really believe his figures will be up from last season - hopefully adding goals if he is more advanced more often.

If you have Rooney and Costa and then Hazard is tough. Hazard for a chelsea cover with hard fixtures is okay for the time being. Not Hazard/Costa both.
