Moving Target

Moving Target – Micah Richards

Following the expiry of his contract with Manchester City, Micah Richards signed a four-deal with Aston Villa on a free transfer last week. The right-back sought the promise of first-team football, having recorded just ten appearances on loan at Fiorentina last term.

The History

The Birmingham-born Richards trained at Oldham Athletic’s youth academy for one year before making the switch to Manchester City at 14 years of age. After spending four years in their youth system, Richards earned his first senior appearance for the Sky Blues in 2005, replacing Danny Mills in a 1-0 defeat to Arsenal. He went on to make a further 15 appearances in all competitions that campaign, netting his first goal in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

Richards established himself as a regular starter over the next couple of seasons, tallying 63 appearances and one goal in all competitions. His cachet rose as a result of his commanding performances at right-back, earning him consecutive nominations for the PFA Young Player of the Year award in the 2006/07 and 2007/08 campaigns.

Richards’ best season in the top flight arrived when City sealed the Premier League crown in 2012; the robust full-back was nominated for the Manchester outfit’s Player of the Year award and notched more assists (five) than any other defender in the league. From the 2012/13 season, however, Argentine international Pablo Zabaleta became the first-choice right-back at the club, demoting Richards to bench duties.

Having chalked up just nine league outings in the previous two terms, Richards joined Fiorentina on a season-long loan deal in September 2014, ending his City career with nine goals and 14 assists across 246 appearances. Unfortunately, the manager at that time, Vincenzo Montella, elected to employ three centre-backs in a 3-5-2 formation that season, limiting Richards to just ten Serie A outings.

Off the back of three appearances for the England U21s, Richards became the youngest defender (18 years, four months and 22 days) to start a match for the senior squad when he played in a friendly against Holland in November 2006. He went on to record 11 caps during Steve McClaren’s brief tenure as the Three Lions boss, before falling out of favour when Fabio Capello was at the helm. To date, Richards has registered one goal and two assists in 13 appearances for England.

The Prospects

Speaking to the club’s official website upon completion of the deal, Villa head coach Tim Sherwood cited Richards’ adaptability as a key factor in his acquisition:

“He is a player who can play in a number of positions. He can play right-back, centre-half and also in a three man defence so his versatility is another real positive. When I spoke with Micah it was clear how determined he is to get his career back on track and I’ve every confidence he will recapture the form and quality he displayed before he moved over to Italy. He had a lot of choices but I’m delighted he chose Aston Villa.”

In his last full season as starter, Richards notched one goal and six assists in 36 appearances across all competitions. Considering that he’s still only 26, there’s every chance that Richards could rediscover the form that had him earmarked as one of England’s top defensive prospects.

From a Fantasy perspective, Richards could well present an enticing route into Villa’s rearguard should he rediscover his best form under Sherwood. For all their failings last season, the West Midlands club still managed a reasonable ten clean sheets, so there’s scope to invest in a low-priced Villa defender when the fixtures are favourable.

In spite of the fact that Villa have two right-backs on their roster (Alan Hutton and Matthew Lowton), Sherwood preferred to deploy winger Leandro Bacuna in that role during the final stretch of last season. Although the Netherlands U21 international served as a potent attacking outlet – notching five assists in ten starts – his relative lack of positional training often left spaces for opposing offenses to exploit.

Certainly, Sherwood’s tactics afford his full-backs plenty of leeway in terms of attacking and given that Bacuna admitted last month that right-back wasn’t his “top position”, Richards’ rampaging runs down the flank could quickly become a feature of Villa’s play. Alternatively, he offers an option in the heart of the backline, though it’s fair to say that there are no shortage of centre-halves for Sherwood to choose from, with Ron Vlaar looking nailed-on, providing he remains injury-free.

Having conceded the third most number of goals last season (57), it’s likely that Villa’s defensive starters are likely to remain around the 4.5 mark. If Richards is placed in the same bracket and plays a prominent role in pre-season, Fantasy managers might be tempted to snap him up early, with the opening schedule smiling relatively kindly on Sherwood’s side. Aside from a home tie against Manchester United in Gameweek 2, the Villains boast a strong opening six fixtures (bou, MUN, cry, SUN, lei, WBA) that could allow them to hit the ground running in their first full season under the former Tottenham manager.

    Now, here's a question.
I'm sure there are many factors in to the pricing of players, but do we think the arrival of Cech will impact on the cost of the rest of the Arsenal back line. Let's say Kosc was going to be valued at 6m do we think he and the rest will now be increased by 0.5m? Of course we'll never actually know but I would assume Kosc would have been 6m.

I'd think 6.0 would be the just price. Grouped like this, I guess.

      Cech, Koscielny, Mertesacker -> 6.0
      Monreal, Debuchy -> 5.5
      Bellerin, Gibbs, Gabriel -> 5.0
      Chambers -> 4.5/5.0

So, among the ones who will be likely to play for us next season.

    ----------------------------------------------Cech
    ---Debuchy---------Mertesacker---------------Koscielny---------Monreal
    -----------------------------xxx----------------------------Cazorla
    --------xxx--------------------------------Ozil--------------------------Sanchez
    ----------------------------------------------xxx

So the xxx's will hold key for us this season.

*We must sign Schneiderlin or Krychowiak. Coquelin is undoubtedly good, but he is the only decent player at that position (not counting Chambers/Flamini), you need backup and even step-up when you're to play 50 games in this season.

*Play a winger like Walcott? Play a midfielder like Ramsey? My solution to this puzzle is Oxlade-Chamberlain... what a player he is! If you have Oxlade-Chamberlain and Sanchez out wide, Ozil's assumed reluctance would not matter much. Skilful and strong wingers they are.

    *Ideal solution: Higuain/Lacazette/Benzema/buy-anyone-but-he-has-to-better-than-Giroud
Choose between Giroud && Walcott: Walcott at home games, Giroud away.

I don't see him getting a place ahead of Cazorla and Ozil, our other central players now, honestly.

He could be a Sanchez-type of winger as well, has the speed, and atleast someone of his quality will not have to sit on the bench.

Drop one of Cazorla and Ramsey so that we get Wilshere to play?
If we indeed play a CM as a RM, it will be Ramsey ahead of Wilshere.

I much prefer Wilshere as an inverted winger, because drifting inside is a lot more natural. I've never liked Ramsey on the right anyway. Too slow to go on the outside, so he becomes predictable, and it's a waste of his goalscoring talents as well.

I think if we play Theo up top we need the midfield control of Wilshere in the team, so that leaves Ramsey or Cazorla. I'd play Ramsey against weaker teams for goals and creativity, I'd play Cazorla against better teams for midfield control.

Wilshere has to improve really to play such a crucial role, I'd feel safer with someone like Ox or Ramsey, can't really drop Ramsey as well - he is one of the best midfielders in the league right now.

I think you have to bench one of Ramsey/Cazorla/Wilshere, which can be disputed whichever one you choose.

Strength in depth is a good thing of course, and we'll no doubt have many injuries to make the decision for us. 😆

The double pivot should be Ramsey and Wilshere or Ramsey and Cazorla.

Ramsey has the athleticism and defensive nous required.

I only remember us doing that once against Napoli in the Emirates cup, and we were getting battered on the counter. Wilshere could probably play that role against the very weakest teams, but even against PL midtable opposition I think we'd be too exposed.

Ox can play instead of Jack, yes, especially when we go to Stoke or other similarly agricultural style teams.

Arteta is another option too, though he's more of a passer than ball winner. He gives away too many free kicks. He's probably on his way out.

      Arsenal have a cracking squad.

They simply need a two signings - CDM to shield the back four (Schneiderlin) and a 30 goal a season ST (Martinez).

      -------------------------------------------Cech/Szczesny/Ospina-------------------------------------

      Debuchy/Bellerin-----Mertesacker/Chambers-----Koscielny/Gabrial-----Monreal/Gibbs

      -----------------Schneiderlin/Coquelin/Flamini-----Ramsey/Wilshere/Arteta------------------

      -----Walcott/Oxlade-Chamberlain-----Ozil/Cazorla/Rosicky-----Sanchez/Welbeck-------

      ---------------------------------------------------Martinez/Giroud----------------------------------------

Arsenal would never pay the money required for Higuain.

          No way Benzema leaves Real.

There isn't many options out there and that's why I think Utd are giving genuine thought to Harry Kane.

Recruitment drive in full flow, already at about 30/40 members:

I've been talking for the last few weeks about setting up a ML next year, £5 entry (paid through paypal to me). Around 40-50 entrants:

    1st prize - 50% of pot
    2nd prize 30% of pot
    3rd prize 20% of pot.

Already had a LOT of interest, which is amazing! I'm already drawing up a spreadsheet so it's not a huge rush and kerfuffle to get members when FPL re opens, so if you are interested in joining just send me an email at fantasyfootballaz7@gmail.com, and i'll add you to the spreadsheet (and therefore reserve list) and email you with more details nearer the time

Goes without saying, but I'm not out to rip anyone off(!) Just want to create a competitive ML with a nice cash reward for the victors.

I've not seen much UFPL chat in the close season (perhaps that's telling in itself!) but I'm interested to know others thoughts on the '14/15 game?

Personally I enjoyed the format and found the different challenges interesting (cheap CBI magnets, picking the right big hitters, having enough MD2 players, working the loan system etc.) but found it a bit weird to be paying for a game where the enjoyment was still less than for standard (and free!) FPL and the chances of actually winning something were still pretty remote.

Did anyone prefer it to FPL? And what tweaks does it need to improve for this year??

More determined to get something out of UFPL next season.

I slipped up with early team selections and captaincy's but, with a stricter Sunday morning schedule, I think I can work a stronger rank next term.

I do think the game lacks that weekly incentive of the transfer, though. I have a love/hate relationship with the loan system.

I'm intrigued to see if they apply any changes this time around.

I'd say it takes up less time than most games. Spend some time choosing your initial squad and then that's it. All you have to do is sort out your bench orders for the gameweek and make your subs. Though that does mean you have to be around at specific times.

Yeah but I like to spend all week pondering whether to make a transfer or not, so it takes ages to study the swing in fixtures etc.

It's probably my favourite format. But it's definitely a game of endurance when it comes to making your changes on time.

In the beta when it didn't count I made every single deadline, made all my planned transfers and tactics, and finished top 20.

After I paid money I missed around 6 deadlines, forgot my transfers plan and struggled to make top 3k.

I did alright from the start (Gavigan writes a good tip article...) but January was my undoing as others both caught up on my diffs and made better moves for the second half. I agree that loans can work (for DGW especially), but you have to get lucky in players - a big name captain for a plum fixture most likely to work, especially if struggling for numbers.

I don't mind paying, but maybe more ways to win prizes (and a greater rivalry with others) would help cement my entry for next season.

I love the format, although I would prefer transfers not loans. I was very excited when it first came out but the problem I had was not a single person in my main mini league was interested in playing it! They all found it too time frustrating in the beta edition having to remember to make subs and kept forgetting. A shame as that's the one feature I'd like to see in the main game. Not the whole team, but I'd love the option to be able to move from your captain to your vice say if your Saturday option bombs. It would keep things more interesting over the weekend and encourage me to captain people at midday on a Saturday which I never do (and probably remains my single biggest stumbling block in the game)

I really enjoy it and love the squad format.
Only minor criticism was after the January transfer window it became clear I wasn't going to make any headway on the leaders, I was ranked about 250 & finished 354. Small gripe that may be down to my squad choice but looking forward to it again.
That & FPL covers it for me.

Could this be the busiest/highest spending window ever?

      Top 4 all need strengthening.

      Chelsea

      - GK (Replace Cech)
      - CB (Time to look for JT's eventual replacement?)
      - FB (If Luis goes then Azpi/Ivanovic need cover)
      - CM (Matic needs support in the big games)
      - ST (Replace Drogba)

      Man City

      - CB (Replace Boyata but Rekik might be given a chance)
      - CM (Replace Milner/Lampard)
      - RM/LM (Nasri & Navas are not good enough)

      Arsenal

      - GK (Cech incoming)
      - CDM (Competition for Coquelin)
      - ST (Upgrade on Giroud - 30 goals a season)

      Man Utd

      - GK (Replace De Gea)
      - Two RB (Rafael/Valencia should not be playing RB for a club like Utd)
      - Two CB (World class, leader, can stay fit)
      - CDM (Carrick's eventual replacement)
      - ST (RVP's eventual replacement)

Put 50£ on a accu containg 3 bets

1st Ljungskile-Gais in Swedens 2nd league, bet +2.5 goals. This is in already, so 1 down.
2nd England to beat Norway in 90mins in women WC.
3rd Usa to beat Colombia by 2 at least in women WC.

      gets me 333£

      Wish me luck!

Quite uncertain value. Hasn't played for a couple of years and last time he played he wasn't good.
