Scout Report – Jordan Veretout

Tim Sherwood continued his shopping spree on Friday by securing the services of £8 million box-to-box midfielder Jordan Veretout from Ligue 1 side Nantes. The Frenchman penned a five-year deal and is amongst a raft of nine summer signings by the Aston Villa manager.

The Midlands side fought off stiff competition from Leicester, Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur to pull off the signing and Sherwood was particularly chuffed that Veretout chose to ply his trade at Villa Park:

“I’m really pleased Jordan decided to choose Aston Villa over the other options he had and opt to continue his development with us. He is only 22 years old but he is vastly experienced for someone that age. He has played over 140 games in Ligue 1 and is a really exciting young player. I know he is very highly rated over in France so we are delighted to get this deal over the line.”

THE HISTORY

After joining the Nantes youth side in 2003, at the age of 10, Veretout worked his way up through the ranks to earn his first professional cap in May 2011. However it was during the 2011-12 campaign that the midfielder finally cemented a starting role. As well as playing further upfield, Veretout occupied a defensive midfield role diligently and started all but five of Nantes’ Ligue 2 matches.

In the following two seasons, the 22-year-old filled a variety of midfield roles and was a focal part of the promotion-winning squad of 2013. The chopping and changing of Veretout’s role prevented him from finding any consistent attacking output as he only managed two goals during the 2012-13 and 2013-14 campaigns.

Last season, though, he picked up in consistency and quickly began to be considered one of France’s hottest young talents. The central midfielder enjoyed a purple patch during the first 18 league matches, picking up six goals and five assists. Although that productivity tailed off in the middle of the campaign, Veretout netted once and picked up an assist in the final two fixtures to silence any doubters.

The new Villa man is yet to receive a senior international cap but was part of the side that triumphed in the 2013 Under-20 World Cup. Since then the youngster has moved up into the Under-21 squad, making eight appearances.

THE PROSPECTS

With the likes of Fabian Delph and former loanee Tom Cleverley now elsewhere, Sherwood urgently needed to address his side’s problems in the centre of the park. Having acquired Idrissa Gueye, the Villa boss will be hoping for Veretout to carry a major goal threat in light of his stand-out season in Ligue 1 last term. Likened to Arsenal’s Aaron Ramsey, the new boy is keen to make his mark:

“I am flattered to read that people think I remind them of Aaron. He is a very good midfield player. But at the same time, I am my own player and play my own game. I want to develop here at Aston Villa. I feel I am a player with big activity – I like to be heavily involved in things. I like to be creative – making goals for my team-mates. That pleases me a lot. But, also, I love scoring goals myself!”

Crucially, the Frenchman’s versatility should help secure a spot in Sherwood’s first XI for the season ahead. His ability to fill any central role, be it defensive or attacking, and even occupy a wider position will afford him a higher chance of grabbing one of those starting places. Sherwood has utilized 4-3-3, 4-4-1-1 and 4-4-2 over the summer and the ex-Nantes man could slot into any of those formations. The former two look the most favourable with three central roles up for grabs; Veretout could play in either the anchor or wider positions of a 4-3-3 and in the central roles of a 4-4-2, or even behind the striker, should Sherwood choose to shift Jordan Ayew onto the flank.

Delving into the data, the Frenchman created an impressive 72 goalscoring chances last term, more than new midfield team-mates Ashley Westwood and Carlos Sanchez combined. Furthermore, no Villa midfielder managed more than Veretout’s 52 shots or seven goals last season but, as mentioned above, he can be very streaky, and Fantasy managers may wait for Veretout to hit a purple patch before investing.

A price of 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game may prove enough of a deterrent for most, though. Scott Sinclair’s weekend hat-trick strengthened his claim as a viable budget midfielder and, at a price of just 5.0, the winger’s current form should ensure Veretout remains under the radar for now.

With matches at home to Sunderland and West Brom as well as trips to newly promoted Bournemouth and Leicester in the opening five Gameweeks, though, Veretout is afforded the chance of impressing early on. Providing he can continue his Ligue 1 form, the Frenchman is definitely one to watch during this term’s opening Gameweeks.

    Tough one:
    A) Mane/Sahko (+0.5m)
    B) Pelle/Chadli

Currently going with B as my logic is that chadli will easily outscore sahko

Easily A for me. Sakho has tough fixtures early on but after about 5 weeks he gets a great run. I am still not sure about Chadli, Mane looks a MUCH better option to me with less rotation risk

Chadli is guaranteed to start out on the wing, so don't think he'll be that much of a rotation risk tbh. You recon sahko's going to have a sick season?

There is no doubt Eriksen and Kane are ahead of him. I would be surprised if they don't sign someone soon and both Dembele and Lamela played ahead of Chadli at times last season. Townsend will get minutes as well so whilst Chadli should start often, he will be subbed off a lot as well as missing the odd game.

Sakho is a decent player with good service and he is starting to settle into the side. Valencia being out means he is guaranteed to play at lone striker until Carroll is back (if ever.)

    Need help with this one:

Got Wally but was unconvinced by performance yesterday. seriously thinking Ox or Ramsey might be more certain than Theo this season. What do you think out of the three?

    1. Malkmus
      • 12 Years
      8 years, 9 months ago

Stick with theo for first few games then see how it pans. Theo will be pretty much nailed on until sanchez comes back and his points per minute scores are superb

Avoid Ox, he is a classic bandwagon who has no certainty of starts. For me Ozil, Ramsey and Caz are the only 3 options in the midfield.
Theo and Ox are likely to rotate in and out

Cheers all. Yeah I think Theo's under serious rotation risk trying to play in two spots. Very difficult to call. He is my sacrificial lamb for Sanchez but I want a strong start this season.

You might be right, but West ham is no chelsea. And neither is Chrystal Palace or Liverpool. Theo is sort of an enigma, you never know what you are gonna get. He does frighten teams with his incredible speed and for that alone it could be worth playing him. And even when he disappoints, his output is up there with the best. Therefore I am tempted to keep him. I share your concern though, but don't really think that Ramsey or Ox are better options. They all will get subbed either way and you never know where Ramsey will play.

When it comes to Theo, just look at the points he brings in. Yesterday he wasn't great but he would have brought in 6 points (2 for playing, 1 for CS and 3 for assist), and that's what you want from someone who just played a mediocre game. There was also the mental aspect, Arsenal just wanted to win.

Good point. I think Arsenal coverage is essential this season but picking the right players has proven to be a pig for me. I've got Ozil and Kos in too and a plan to bring Sanchez at some point. However's not delivering get ditched.

If I had a choce I would stick four to five Arsenal players in this season, but then I'm biased.

First draft of my team. Probably needs improvement, what do you suggest?

    Cech - Schmeichel

    Ivan - Cedric - Baker - O'Shea - Huth

    Milner - Silva - Walcott - Haz - Schneiderlin

    Deeney - Benteke - Pelle

Have people a wildcard strategy that decides the make up of their team? I cant decide which option to take and have a bout 5 draft teams. I need to nail my colours to the mast soon. In previous seasons people generally just saved their wildcard till DGWs, used it in an international break or blew it due to a bad start. What are people doing this year given we cant save it?

    A. Saving it till when you really need it pre-Christmas ie injuries, template changes etc
    B. Using it in GW2 having gone AOA in GW1
    C. Using it to get in Aguero in GW2 or GW3.
    D. Using it in the international breaks in GW4 or GW8.

first time i've thought about this (hadnt spotted the rule change!)

It's a good point and so far i have no idea. A seems sensible, but i guess GW4 could work pretty well as well....esp for those starting without Aguero...

I prefer to go without a plan. There is usually a point in the season when I have about 4+ transfers I want to make. I imagine I will save the second one until the DGW's at the end.

          For me, yes.
The top players are good at planning ahead so they can save the wildcard for a planned time which was previously the DGW at the end of the season.
If you can pre plan well, go for the international break like many do as you can build a team with Aguero and Sanchez as well as knowing all of the 4.5m defs. That is probably the best tactic but it doesn't work for me as there is always a point where I really need it.

Yes. We used to have a Main Wildcard that could be played at any time during the season, and a January Wildcard that could only be played in January.

Now we have a First Wildcard that can be played any time during the first half of the season, and a Second Wildcard that can be played any time during the second half.

Not seen any mention of this strategy til now, is there any reason you're using it GW1 as opposed to later in the season when you may need it more?

        1. bodsc
          • 9 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

Happy to use it at the start as I can't see a time later in the season when i'd need it more. Thinking behind it is it's my plan to use my WC before the first break, so it makes sense to use AOA beforehand so I can then use the WC to sort my team out. That leaves the first 4 GW's, looking at fixtures and the players i'd want in my original line-up, GW1 looks like the best round of games to use it.

Hopefully this means a strong start, beginning of the season is usually a bit crazy so fingers crossed for lots of goals. Just flirting with this idea for now anyway.

Yes, I have a wildcard strategy that (partly) decides the makeup of my team. Sorting that and a couple of other things out came well before picking players for me.

I'm really thinking about B. Last two seasons I've used my WC before 2nd or 3rd gameweeks, so I have no illusions here.

Yes, I could try to plan until the first intl break, but actually starting off with a good 1st GW score and then firing things up with the WC is really tempting, and it makes sense, at least for me.

I think people's obsession with the wild card is misplaced. How many transfers do most people actually make when using it?If more than four or so the team is probably a mess.If you save it for a double game week you'll most likely end up filling your team with players you don't really want and who probably won't play two 90 min games in four/five days, anyway.Using it to get one player i.e Aguero is obviously a waste and a result of bad planning.Drafting out all your players who are evidently decent internationals seems counter-productive,too.I think the best strategies are to use it GW1 to get any breakout players missed out on and to get on all those early panicky bandwagons to try to increase your team value. If not just use it when you need to make more than a couple of transfers.

You could always put Rooney in for Kun 1st week, then you have the necessary funds already in the bank.
Defence isn't particularly strong, but that is the natural result of having 5 strong forward options.

i'd go Huth and upgrade wilson to sakho

I'm thinking of starting with Wilson and leaving £1m itb to upgrade to Sakho after GW1. If there's another problem in my team I can use the £1m towards transfers and just keep Wilson. Is this a good strategy or should I just stick with one and not the other?

            Your idea.

I am tempted to bench Sakho for GW1 to be honest, Arsenal looked solid yesterday.

Very first draft so would appreciate feedback

    Cech - 4.0

    Cedric - Huth - Gomez - Lescott - O' Shea

    Hazard - Cazorla - Silva - Henderson - Wanyama

    Pelle - Benteke - Giroud

I like the Gomez pick, but I don't think O'Shea and Lescott are worth picking. I'd think you could upgrade one of them at least. And Giroud doesn't convince, he could be on the bench just as easily as he could start.

i suppose that this then is johnny howson's song:
Nobody knows the trouble you feel

Nobody cares the feeling is real.

      Johnny
      we're sorry
      won't you come on home?
      We worry
      won't you come on?
What is wrong in my life that I must get drunk every night ?
      Johnny
      we're sorry.

      Use the phone
call your mum - she's missing you badly

      missing her so
      Who do you know
      where will you stay?
Big city life is not what they say.
      Johnny
      we're sorry
      won't you come on home? . . .

      You'd better go home
      everything's closed

      Can't find a room
      money's all blown.
Nowhere to sleep out in the cold
      nothing to eat
      nowhere to go.
      Johnny
      we're sorry
      won't you come on home? . . .

Won't you come on home ? We worry
won't you come on home ?
      Johnny
won't you come on home? We worry -.

wanyama to other 4.5, because his % is ridiculous - price drop probable. plus u might want another saints like pelle so no wanyama will allow you to do that.

      Coates.

O'shea left out of final pre-season game and Kaboul/Coates did well together. O'Shea might play ahead of Kaboul GW1 due to Kaboul still building up fitness. Coates looks solid though. Finished season strongly and advocaat seems to love him.

Another consideration is jones who looks good to start season, but he could be dropped/rotated with matthews at any point.
