The Watchlist Updated – Gameweek 1 – Goalkeepers

With the start of the 2015/16 season only a few days away, we’ve formulated our initial Watchlist rankings, which offer player recommendations for the next four-to-six rounds of fixtures. Sunderland’s number one leads the way, though the Saints and Leicester are in hot pursuit in light of the opening schedule.

After emerging as one of the strongest budget goalkeepers last season, and with an obliging looking start to the new campaign (lei, NOR, SWA, avl, TOT, bou), Costel Pantilimon stands at the summit of our initial keeper rankings. The Sunderland stopper will set us back 5.0 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) and, having registered four shut-outs in eight appearances under Dick Advocaat last season, the duel potential of returns from save points and clean sheets earns the Romania international the top spot. The changes to the BPS, which will boost Pantilimon’s potential due to saves, also plays a part in our thinking, bearing in mind he averaged 4.4 points per appearance last season.

Despite plenty of changes in personnel, the Southampton defence has been one of the strongest units in the Premier League in recent times, keeping 15 clean sheets in each of the last two seasons. With Fraser Forster out with a long-term knee injury, Dutch international Maarten Stekelenburg will be the first-choice for the Saints, and while he may not possess the quality of the former Celtic keeper, his 5.0 price tag offers us a relatively budget friendly route into the Southampton backline, while the early schedule (new, EVE, wat, NOR, wba, MUN) is pretty favourable.

Like with Pantilimon, Kasper Schmeichel enters this season having ended last term strongly, keeping five clean sheets in his final seven outings. Unlike the Black Cats keeper, however, Schmeichel will be playing for a new manager this season, with Claudio Ranieri taking the reigns at the King Power Stadium. Uncertainty over how that will effect the Foxes has slightly dampened enthusiasm for Leicester assets as we formulate our 15-man squads, but the friendly opening schedule (SUN, whm, TOT, bou, AVL, sto) and the Dane’s price tag of 4.5 mean he should still attract plenty of suitors. For anyone looking for a rotation partner for Schmeichel, Swansea’s Lukasz Fabianski offers a strong choice.

Talking of goalkeepers that rotate well, Norwich’s John Ruddy and Stoke’s Jack Butland look strong contenders for the best 9.0 pairing to start the season. The duo would provide a raft of favourable fixtures (CPL, sun, nor, WBA, BOU, LEI, BOU, LEI, new, WAT) over the opening 10 Gameweeks, although ongoing concerns over Ryan Shawcross’ back injury should be monitored given his importance to the Stoke rearguard. Again, the BPS changes play a part here – Ruddy sat third for saves (128) in his previous season (2013/14) in the top-flight.

Now the clear first choice at Villa Park following Shay Given’s move to Stoke, Brad Guzan (4.5) gets the nod for a place on our Watchlist thanks to Villa’s generous looking opening fixtures (bou, MUN, cpl, SUN, lei, WBA). The Villans did concede 2.1 goals per match under the attack-minded Tim Sherwood, however, although the additions of left-back Jordan Amavi and Micah Richards in particular could see an improved defensive showing from Villa this season. Certainly, Guzan – who averaged 3.3 points per appearance last year – can be expected to be kept busy between the sticks.

According to our Season Ticker, Bournemouth have the most favourable fixtures (AVL, liv, whm, LEI, nor, SUN) over the first six Gameweeks, bringing the 4.5-priced Artur Boruc into our thoughts. The Cherries kept 19 shout-outs, more than any other side, as they won the Championship last season, and the Poland international will know what it’s all about in the top-flight, having made 49 Premier League appearances for Southampton. Available at 4.5 in FPL, Boruc could be combined in a rotation pairing with Watford’s Heurelho Gomes, who comes in at the same price. The former Tottenham keeper is slightly lower in our rankings because of the Hornets tougher start, but the combination would provide these (AVL, WBA, SOT, LEI, SWA, SUN, CPL, WAT) home matches over the opening eight Gameweeks. While the two should rack up plenty of save points, it could be a risk to carry goalkeepers from two newly promoted sides, given the gulf in class between the two divisions.

Petr Cech lands slightly lower than perhaps many would expect in our opening rankings, but the difficult fixtures against Liverpool and Chelsea in the first six are heavily factored in. Valued at 5.5, he is likely to be right up there when it comes to the highest scoring keepers in FPL this term, and if the Gunners’ pre-season is anything to go by, Cech’s arrival has afforded his defence an air of calm, strengthening their chances of improving upon last year’s 13 shut-outs.

With West Ham’s early fixtures very friendly at home (LEI, BOU, NEW, NOR) and pretty treacherous on the road (ars, liv, mci), Adrian (5.0) looks a prime contender for a rotation pairing, bearing in mind the Hammers managed two clean sheets on their travels last season. The aforementioned Schmeichel and Guzan look the most suitable candidates, with either combination setting us back 9.5 in FPL. West Ham’s involvement in the qualifying stages of the Europa League could be a slight concern for their defensive prospects, should Slaven Bilic look to rotate.

Manchester City are actually the highest placed of last season’s top four on our ticker for the opening six Gameweeks (wba, CHE, eve, WAT, cpl, WHM), but with so much value among the goalkeepers, the 5.5-priced Joe Hart only finds a place towards the bottom of our rankings. The England international was awarded the Golden Glove award last year after he kept 14 clean sheets, but with injuries or Copa America duties placing question marks over so many of City’s regulars, his stock at this point isn’t particularly high right now.

Chelsea’s start to the season involves head-to-heads with two of their main rivals for the title (mci, ARS), so Thibaut Courtois is another big name who finds himself well down our rankings. The other four fixtures (SWA, wba, CPL, eve) are against sides likely to be strong mid-table teams, and bearing in mind the attacking potential of the likes of Branislav Ivanovic, and the strong value of Cesar Azpilicueta (6.0), the 5.5-valued Belgian may not be the best route into the champions’ backline.

Unless I am missing something, the deal is nowhere near done. It is hardly set in stone that he will go, he does love the club. For some players, only getting the odd game is still enough especially when it is for the club you love.

If he does move, don't expect him to be getting 90 mins from week 1 and he will easily be 9m+ given the price tag. For me he won't be worth the risk with Ozil, Ramsey, Depay all cheaper

If you had an offer that says if you put 20£ on a league winner and if that team wins in gw1 you get that 20 straight back and still have the league winner bet in play.....

Would you back Arsenal or Chelsea?

Chelsea. They should both win week 1. Fairly easy games for title contenders. Given that, just go for whoever is more likely to win the title as you are almost certainly getting the £20 back.

(Alternatively bet £20 on the other team at another bookie, guaranteed profit as neither are odds on.)

    Hey Guys
    Can you rate this please:

    Schmeichel - Schwarzer

    Azpi - Mertesacker - O'Shea - Mings - Targett

    Sterling - Mane - Cazorla - Hazard - Wanyama

    Benteke - Rooney - Sakho

    Any thoughts/suggestions are welcome 🙂

Targett will get dropped as soon as Bertrand is back

Sahko - had a purple patch and only ended up with 9 goals. I dont get the fuss (my brother wants him as well)

For 0.5 less, you could get Lambert at West Brom?

Othewise, some solid picks in the team

I'm a West Ham fan and he's our only real goal threat.

Have sort of thought of downgrading him (initially Adebayor if he went to Villa) and upgrading Targett.
Though I plan on Wild Carding early on (I do this every year) so could switch him out then

What do you make of Cazorla over any other Arsenal player?

HHHmm...I love Santi, but boy is his shooting all over the place. A lot of his goals he scored for us last season came from penalties

Alexis is your best bet but not back until GW 2 or 3

Walcott is the one everyone is going for as he playing CF

Ramsey: Full fit - will get more goals than Santi/Ozil

ozil: flaky. doesnt score many and is too inconstant. but will play every game and will create chances

          Wilshere: waste of time

Chamberlian: I have in my FPL team! 6m i think will be a bargain (its a risk - but im going to go for it)

          Welbeck: garbage

and ive decided not to go with haz.

      Gk = Solid
Def - Solid (im assuming Huth and Francis for the bench?)
Mid - decent but no Hazard. do you plan to bring in him or Alexis? Bentalab is obviously a waste of time (but im assuming will sit on the bench?)
Cf- nice. though, as i said before, I dont get Sahko. Had a purple patch but only got 9 goals. Lambert/Berhaino? Or one of the promoted boys (Deeney/Wilson?) and spend the extra cash elsewhere ?

Ooooh...now that is the question of the day 🙂

          # 1m basically lets you upgrade Bentalab to someone like Ki Si Yueng (which would allow you to switch to a 5 man midfield in GW 2)

          # or upgrade Huth/Franics to an Arsenal defender

          # or save it as part of your 'Sergio Ageuro Transfer fund' - which a lot of people seem to be doing

sorry - just seen you had Kos already! Switch that to Merts and get rid of Sahko...and the extra cash will let you buy Henderson (who is on set plays and penalties at Liverpool) and for 7m is a bargain

    Warning: template ahead!

    Butland / Ruddy
    Azpi / Kosc / Huth / Francis / O'Shea
    Hazard / Ozil / Sterling / ? / ?
    Rooney / Pelle / Wilson

12.5 ITB, need at least 0.5 for my Aguero plan

    1) Chadli or Hendo or Milner + 4.5
    2) Mahrez + Sinclair + 1.5 extra ITB for other upgrades (e.g. Ivanovic)

no more a risk than anybody else my friend.

last season he scored 18 goals

pre-season he has scored quite a few too

they have Palace, Sunderland + Stoke

He will be rotated with Sakho... I see massive gamble with that ?

        1. londonmayor
          • 8 Years
          8 years, 9 months ago

Haha, of course. Every player is a risk in their own right 🙂

But Jerome's record in the PL is rubbish. Of course, I could be proven wrong and he may end up as the new Gerd Muller this season

But to me, Jerome/Sahko seems a little lightweight to me.

You could cut back on one of your mifridlers (maybe a Henderon/Milner/Ki Si yeoung) and use the extra cash to bring in a Benteke/Kane/Giroud?

But hey, just my 2 pence.

As a Gooner, i can tell you that I love me some Rambo...but I'm going for Cesc

Pros and cons: ramsey will score more (plus scored on opening day last season I seem to remember). Problem is that he doesnt have have a set position.

Cesc is a classic early starter and takes set pieces. Plus a lot of the play comes through him, where as Arsenal, Ozil, Alexis and Cazorla all get involved.

I'm going to stick with Cesc for the short term and then cash in a later for Ramsey

True. I guess I have Ozil for my Arsenal mid anyway (although I am likely to change to Walcott a few more times) and Fab has always been good. My only concern is his lack of goals. I can't see him managing as many assists as he did last season so it puts a lot of pressure on him to score a few and wit his field position I am not sure he is capable.

I know he always starts well but he always used to be in an advanced position and I think Chelsea shocked teams early on last season and that allowed Fab a lot of assists whereas this season they will close him down a lot more so maybe he will be restricted a bit.

The fact I started writing this liking Fab and by the end have settled on Ramsey shows how much I am changing my mind. Just when I think I have a settled team, one little comment undermines the whole thing.

Haha...thats everyone! we all have a tendency to over think things

Sadly for me, Chelsea are super reliable and will click sooner or later. Cesc's goals record (at Arsenal) is actually pretty good. I'll still hedge my money on him
Even on the weekend: he had a poor game, but still manged to create three openings. Chuck in his set peices (for the likes of Ivan and Terry to attack) and you have a solid 160-190 FPL pointer

But like i said, as a gooner i'd be delighted for Ramsey to score goals every game and for Cesc to crash and burn. Fingers Crossed 🙂

banged in a hat-trick at the weekend. Otherwise I'd recommend Aarons as an NUFC fan if he stays fit

Nice but what about getting into the starting 11? Aarons only played 132 minutes last season.

              Because of fitness issues*

Yeah that's why I would opt for Sinclair

What about going for Ramsey instead of Sterling? Would that be smart?

Possibly for the first few games but not in the long run-I'd be more inclined to go for walcott or yaya (set plays in aguero absence). You're better off with a 4.5 & 4.0 keeper to save money

Cazorla, Ramsey or Ozil? Any suggestions people?
