Moving Target

Moving Target – Connor Wickham

Following the arrival of Chelsea loanee Patrick Bamford last month, Palace further bolstered their forward line with the signing of Connor Wickham on a five-year deal. The Sunderland frontman believes the Eagles’ wealth of creative spark and talented new recruits will enable him to flourish at Selhurst Park:

“I spoke to the gaffer last week and he said all the right things about the club and I’ve got friends here who also told me some very good things. I looked at the team before I arrived here and the signings that have been brought in; and the potential to score goals and the chances that could be created was a massive influence. Hopefully I can add to that talent and make the squad stronger. I think I needed the fresh start, I had four years up north and it’s been a bit stop-start. Now I’ve come back home and I can settle down and see my family a bit more and hopefully let my football do the talking.”

The History

Born in Hereford, Wickham was assigned to the youth set-up at Reading between 2002 and 2006, before teaming up with Ipswich Town in 2006. On 11 April 2009, just 11 days after his 16th birthday, Wickham was handed his senior debut for the Tractor Boys, becoming the club’s youngest ever player.

Wickham’s influence grew in the 2009/10 Championship campaign, with the former England U21 international bagging four goals and two assists across 26 appearances (nine starts). By the second half of the 2010/11 season, Wickham had established himself as a regular, notching nine goals and three assists in 37 outings (24 starts).

Alerted by the youngster’s commanding displays in the second tier, Sunderland shelled out £8 million for Wickham’s signature in the summer of 2011. He struggled to make an impact during his debut season at the Stadium of Light, recording just one goal in five outings in the first XI. His narrative followed a similar course during the 2012/13 season, with a one-month loan at Sheffield Wednesday providing some much-needed playing time.

After failing to secure a starting berth during the opening nine Gameweeks of the 2013/14 season, Wickham went back out on loan to Wednesday, where he would tally eight goals and four assists across 16 starts. Wickham was subsequently recalled in January and went on to card five goals in nine starts at the back-end of the season as the Wearsiders narrowly avoided relegation.

In the previous campaign, Wickham started all but seven of the Black Cats’ league ties, registering five goals and one assist along the way. His two goals in the final quarter of the season once again helped Sunderland beat the drop as they strung together a five-match unbeaten run from Gameweek 34 under new manager, Dick Advocaat.

The Prospects

Wickham was predominantly fielded on the left wing in a 4-3-3 last term, which affords Alan Pardew the flexibility to adopt that formation as an alternative to his favoured 4-2-3-1. Indeed, fellow new boy Bamford – who’s been deployed on both wings and at the number ten berth during his past two loan spells – can also fill various roles in either set-up.

That being said, it’s more likely that – given Pardew’s surfeit of wide options – Wickham is assigned a central striker berth, pushing the likes of Bournemouth target Glenn Murray and Marouane Chamakh for starts. Certainly, Wickham was deployed there in his pre-season bow against Dagenham and Redbridge earlier this week and had operated as a target man for the majority of his fledgling career.

Wickham’s underlying stats highlight a tenacity that’s suited to the role: no forward across the league executed more successful tackles (42) last term, while he ranked eighth for headers won (95). Furthermore, his success rate for aerial duels (48.2%) surpassed that of any Palace forward, with Murray (45.7%) coming closest to that figure.

Pitched at 6.0 in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL) game, Wickham would have to vastly improve his shooting to arrive on our radars, though. Last season he was placed ninth amongst forwards for overall attempts, with a total of 83 just three less than Saido Berahino and one more than Christian Benteke, for example. Whereas Berahino scored 13 times and Benteke netted on 14 occasions, Wickham registered just five goals – which equates to a 6% conversion rate – and managed to get only 28.9% (or 24) of his efforts on target.

In the absence of a nailed-on starter in Palace’s forward line, Fantasy managers have set their sights on the likes of Yohan Cabaye (6.5), Yannick Bolasie (6.5) and Jason Puncheon (6.0). While the recruitment of Wickham and Bamford provides more competition for the latter two, Cabaye’s security of starts and share of set-piece duty strengthens his case for inclusion.

The fact that the Eagles square up to Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Spurs within the opening six Gameweeks encourages us to observe them from afar in the early stages. Nonetheless, Palace placed sixth for goals scored (27) and third for shots inside the box (167) after Pardew’s appointment in 2014/15, so are evidently capable of delivering attacking returns should they maintain last term’s momentum.

Ok so how many goals does agerou need to score to justify his price tag with Rooney benteke Costa and Kane even giroid potentially getting 20 plus this season.. I think if he doesn't get at least 10 assists 20 goals his price won't be justified.. suppose key Is having him right time

All depends how you spend the extra cash. If you spend it on - for example - a 9m midfielder that flops, and the Aguero-owners have him plus a high-performing 6.5m midfielder, then you're fecked.

I'd say the key is having those other guys you mentioned at the right times.

My thinking would be the same. But I have him for captaincy. No other player is a more consistent cap option

In each of the last 3 seasons, only 3 players produced 20+ goals each year. It's alot rarer than perhaps most people think to score 20+.

Giroud has no chance of 20 but on the other parts you have a very good point

Anothee thing to add is when kun is a good captain option weeks 4, 6 and 8, there are plenty of other good options. But When Rooney/Arsenal are weeks 3, 5 and 7, there arent loads of alternatives

If you have him all season you'll captain him for at least 10 GWs. And regardless of whether he justifies his price tag, you will fall behind if you don't own him. Much more reliable than the other players you mentioned.

Sinclair, Sinclair and Sinclair... what are you thinking about him?!
    - Does he really get place in first 11?
    - He is great perspective player or he has got only one great game in pre sezon?

For me, he's cheap and has a decent fixture in GW1 when I need my fifth mid to play. Worth a punt. He's burnt me before though, and may well again!

He was great at Swansea, barely used at Man City, failed to make an impact at WBA on loan, looked to be improving at Villa last year. If he can rediscover his Swansea form...

Glad someone else is looking at Mignolet - I think yours is the first I've seen with him in.

See my post below, though, the rotation with Ruddy is pretty nice.

Really nicely balanced team - couldn't work out how you'd done it then I realised you don't have Hazard. Could be, ahem, hazardous. Or it could be the making of you.

    Pantilimon (Hamer)
    Azpil - Cedric - Bellerin
Hazard - Mahrez - Walcott - Mane (Wanyama)
    Costa - Rooney - Wilson

Dont know who to replace Costa for while he is injured, might switch to a 3-5-2 and have Sterling in midfield and cost out for the while.

Thanks. A lack of City is quite worrying, admittedly, but I might risk it for a few weeks and then lose an Arsenal mid. Not sure I want to squeeze any money out of my subs unless I can think of a decent 4.5 mid.

I've only just settled on Migs this morning so will ponder his partner in crime a little longer. I had a perception that Stoke were less of a defensive stalwart then they used to be, but read the Guardian preview the other day suggesting their stats have remained pretty decent.

Each season our carefully laid plans so often backfire as newbies to FPL and so-called casuals steal a march by opting for familiar names over stats and last year’s top performers over detailed predictions of the year to come.

Having a look at ownership I thought I’d showcase the ‘template XI’, with a bench thrown in too. The bench players are the most owned out of the cheapest in each position.

These players below have a huge ownership. If they score well and you don’t own them then it can ruin your start. But if they fail and your carefully prepared differentials do well then you could prosper.

These well owned players could also become money pits if they fail, with Fantasy managers quick to off load should they not deliver returns.

All ownership figures correct as of Aug 4. Note this is not designed to be an actual team so will not be 100m or lower.

    The Template XI

    Cech (31.5%)

    Clyne (42.5%) Ivanovic (32.2%) Jagielka (25.3%)

    Hazard (56.6%) Depay (24.8%) Henderson (24.4%) Sterling (19.9%)

    Kane (36.6%) Rooney (35.1%) (Benteke 33.6%)

    Bench: Schwarzer (15.4%), Baker (15.5%) O’Shea (4.5%), (Wanyama 20.3%)

    A few things stand out.

Henderson is clearly preferred to Milner, who has just 12.3% ownership. But if Milner starts well and Henderson doesn’t there could be a significant switch in ownership and a price drop for Henderson.

The global following of Manchester United is also at play here with Depay the second highest owned midfielder without any pre season form behind him. Manchester United midfielders can be the most volatile in terms of price fluctuation so his owners better hope he delivers and similarly priced Mata (6.8%) fails.

Leicester’s number two keeper Schwarzer is arguably being used as a makeweight for Cech and Courtois owners. He could also be picked as he is a familiar name and a misplaced assumption he will start. If either of Cech and Courtois owners get injured expect to see a few panicking managers without a playing goalkeeper. If Schmeichel gets injured then a good proportion of managers will have a high quality 4m goalkeeper in play.

Kane is very well owned, but I suspect less well owned amongst the FFS community. If he starts scoring well the community will be left playing catch up. The same applies to Benteke, another potentially explosive player whose price could rise.

Hazard’s huge ownership will leave non owners quaking behind the sofa and his owners hoping that he can deliver and avoid a price plummeting exodus.

Questions – how many do you own? Which of the template team do you think will do well, and who will fail?

Worth noting that Azpilicueta and Fonte are also very well owned and should also be considered template players.

the reason for some of these (Jagielka, Clyne, Henderson, Schwarzer, Baker, Wanyama) is almost certainly because they are the highest points scorers from last season in the price bracket and some players will just pick from the '1st page'

      I own 4.

Going without Hazard though...for the early fixtures at least. I'm planning a WC around GW 8 or so and will be going without any Chelsea attack till then. Really think it'll pay off whilst their fixtures aren't too hot, hoping I've spent the spare change from dropping Hazard in places that'll garner me more points than I would get keeping Hazard over the rough patch.

Haz, Sterling, Kane, and Benteke should do fairly well. Think both Sterling and Benteke will benefit from their new squads and potentially have a better season. Kane will still get his but not sure if he can duplicate last year's performance. Hazard will always be a solid option.

One of the reasons I posted was because of the talk yesterday about the template and avoiding it. I think sometimes we can get caught in a bubble and assume the FFScout community's favourites are the template. I think that the above shows that is not the case. Cedric, Milner, Wilson, Ritchie, Mane, Ruddy, Walcott....and the others are all frequently mentioned in FFS teams but are not amongst the real template.

The fact that many of us will own 2-4 of the above shows that the FFS community is already busting the template. Well done template busters. 🙂

That's great news I think and shows just how template busting us lot are. Now we need to make sure Arsenal actually deliver and the likes of Kane and Depay don't.

Doubt it's accurate to say we are busting the template. We have our own template. A FFS template.
Not saying that's good or bad, but it's a big community, therefore a big template

I don't think it is though when you consider millions play the game. Especially early on.

In Gameweek 8 last season a Southampton attacker and defender plus Aguero were very much part of the FFS template. All not that well owned by the real template and look what happened -many of us rocketed up the rankings.

Later on when a top 10K template emerges then that's true it carries more influence, but there won't be an emerging 10K template for many weeks t come.

So while we may have a template do not underestimate its ability to be different from the crowd.

          1. Woeisme
            • 12 Years
            8 years, 9 months ago

I appreciate that. But I think you will agree that we are 'the crowd'
The winner of FPL will come from this community
The final top 10,000 will have at least 7000 from this community.

The casual template is not important. The FFS template is.
It becomes template for a reason and when it changes,,, our teams will change with it.

            Embrace the template

Kane vs Benteke is (on the whole) going to be quite a decisive Casuals vs Community battle.

I'm still debating it myself, butnI suspect it's one where the Community could take a bit of a beating...

I don't think 20-30% ownership is THAT big, really. A Hazard haul will have a big effect on owners/non-owners, and so will a Chelsea clean sheet, but that's got little to do with a casual/community divide. But Depay, Henderson etc, not so much.

I don't think Clyne is a good pick for 5.5m, given that you can have Skrtel for the same price, and the away fixtures are fierce. He could very well keep ticking over nicely with a series of clean sheets, but I think his price can only fall with such high ownership.

I have looked for value in the market and have 5 midfielder/forwards in the £8-9m range. This gives me some unexpected benefits.

I can simply transfer out the worst performing player in that range without worrying about having to do multiple transfers also avoiding price drops by choosing to wait for free transfers. Also I can easily jump on any bandwagons.

From what I see their are levels of template snobbery.

I see people bang out a team saying perfection, other posters kissing their hole yet it has a pile of relative unknowns like Francis, Cedric etc.

My team at present is non-template but I'll let you into a secret I started last year with Fabregas and was very confident to do so.

Mata has become a left field and non-template pick.

Kane is definitely non-template but yet he is a captain option in two of the first six gws.

There's many ways to skin a cat, Rooney is complete flavour of pre season. How many teams will he be in if you need Aguero & Kane/Benteke?

Kane has 36% ownership...he's firmly in the template.

Don't confuse the template - which is the most owned players, with what most people on here have. Kane is a differential amongst the FFS community but definitely very much a template player, the real template that is.

Yeah sorry I meant FFS Jonty.

He's been slated as a pick this year, I think he will do really well.

I suppose for me its which of that grander game template can stand to really hurt you if you don't have them for the opening six for example.

Not sure why Kane is not a good pick, full stop. Rotates the captain's armband well with Hazard and Rooney early doors.
Whereas Aguero and Benteke are early doubts, Kane will play and be the sole focus of attack. Spurs fixtures are ok especially the home games.
I still can not see what there is not to like except maybe the 9.5 price. I have Mane so not keen on two Southampton players. So come on Jonty, where is the value up front or more importantly, who should the Community managers be looking at to not meet the "template". I have Rooney, Kane and Sakho with Aguero in for Rooney in week 4 as the plan.
Really looking forward to seeing who you come up with

I have 5 of these in my squad at the moment, but it is still being tweaked.

No-one will have all these players in their squad, especially as it is way over budget. A true template squad should at least be within budget.

Hazard is the only player owned by over 50%, so he and Wanyama are the only players definitely in the template squad.

It would be more accurate to say that these are among a group of perhaps 30 or 40 players who are competing for a place in the template.

The following appears to give the highest overall percentage for the first eleven within a squad costing not more than 100.0m:

      Cech (5.5, 32.4%)
      Clyne (5.5, 42.4%), Ivanovic (7.0, 32.7%), Jagielka (5.5, 25.5%), Fonte (5.5, 23.5%)
      Hazard (11.5, 56.8%), Henderson (7.0, 24.8%), Schneiderlin (5.5, 13.0%)
      Kane (9.5, 37.1%), Rooney (10.5, 36.4%), Benteke (8.5, 35.7%)
      (Schwarzer (4.0, 16.0%), Baker (4.0, 15.4%), Barry (4.5, 3.6%), Coquelin (4.5, 3.3%)
      +0.5 ITB.

This is closer to a proper FPL template.

An alternative way to reduce the cost from 101.5m would be to downgrade Ivanovic (7.0, 32.7%) by Mertesacker (5.5, 16.1%) instead of downgrading Depay (8.5, 24.9%) to Schneiderlin (5.5, 13.0%).

Correction: Coquelin (4.5, 3.3% should of course be replaced by Wanyama (4.5, 20.5%). 😳

Slight improvement (restoring Depay, and including Ki and O'Shea in place of Ivanovic/Mertesacker and Barry):

        Cech (5.5, 32.4%)
        Clyne (5.5, 42.4%), Jagielka (5.5, 25.5%), Fonte (5.5, 23.5%)
        Hazard (11.5, 56.8%), Depay (8.5, 24.9%), Henderson (7.0, 24.8%), Ki (5.5, 9.9%)
        Kane (9.5, 37.1%), Rooney (10.5, 36.4%), Benteke (8.5, 35.7%)
        (Schwarzer (4.0, 16.0%), Wanyama (4.5, 20.5%), O'Shea (4.5, 13.3%), Baker (4.0, 15.4%))
        +0.0m ITB.

This casual XI not template XI. This site should pay Eboue to write Hot Topics.

    Aguero doubtful
    Costa a constant injury doubt
    Kane dodgy pre season
    Giroud a rotation risk
    Benteke at new club

Is it time for 3-5-2? So many teams with Wilson/Deeny when a 6.5/7 mid could be played instead...

      Or even 4-5-1?

Maybe for now. But a cheap form striker always emerges, and 3-4-3 becomes the way to go.

If Kane had a dodgy pre-season then what would u say about Rooney?

I don't think so but many will disagree. Arse & saints have better early fixtures

I'm thinking along the same lines.
        a) Minor differential in the first few weeks, if it pays off you've got a headstart plus the players others want are already in your team and price for the chelsea players should come down for when you want them (WC after a few weeks).
        b) If it doesn't pay off it is unlikely it will hit you too hard (I am assuming here that I won't miss attacking returns for the defenders due to the tough start) and will hopefully be balanced out by the gains you get from upgrading elsewhere.
        c) if it is a massive mistake, shrug your shoulders and say 'it's only a game'!!

          Yeah, It's just a game 🙂

I'm not gonna start as they have tough fixtures. Ars & South are the way to go 🙂

How do you think he would he be priced if he joins West Ham? Would you favour him over Sakho?

    RMT

    Between the Sticks: Stekelenburg
    Brick wall: Kos, Azpi, Cedric
Midfield: Fabregas, Walcott, Ki, (Silva, Sterling, Cazorla or Mata?)
    Point getters: Kane, Rooney, Pelle

I have got Pelle as he seems to be Southampton's No.1 Striker and looking at their starting games I think he could get a few points for me. Walcott as he is OOP. The others talk for themselves.

Need some help for my 4th midfielder as I don't know whether it is worth splashing on Silva or sterling or going cheap to Cazorla or mata and then upgrading Ki?

Help would be much appreciated :))

I would go with cazorla or mata to help free up funds for Rooney>aguero(if required)

I don't know why but I think that Rooney is going to have one of the best seasons of his life, with him being the only out and out striker for a Man United team that are looking very strong this season, I think he will perform. I was hoping to find 5m somewhere though to upgrade Pelle haha

Costa or Pelle, I picked Pelle due to his starting fixtures but not too sure
