Scout Scribbles – FA Reject Courtois Appeal

The FA dismiss Chelsea’s appeal over Thibaut Courtois’ weekend red card. Kevin Mirallas remains a doubt for Everton, Jack Grealish is set to miss out for Villa again, whilst Newcastle due Remy Cabella and Paul Dummett return to training.

Courtois Appeal Fails

Chelsea are set to be without their first-choice keeper, Thibaut Courtois, for the weekend trip to City, after unsuccessfully appealing the keeper’s weekend dismissal against Swansea.

The Scout Says: There’s no real surprise with the FA’s decision, which should afford Asmir Begovic his first league start for the champions on Sunday afternoon. Chelsea’s unusually porous display against the Swans may persuade owners of their defenders to move them to the bench for the Etihad showdown. Granted, Jose Mourinho’s men have a knack of shutting up shop on these occasions but they seemed decidedly sluggish at the back last weekend and with City looking slick against West Brom on Monday evening, the chances of a clean sheet for the champions, is, for once, debatable.

Mixed News for Toffees

Roberto Martinez expects Gerard Deulofeu and Muhamed Besic to return to the matchday squad this weekend, while Kevin Mirallas is touch-and-go for the Southampton clash after sustaining an ankle injury against Watford:

“Gerard Deulofeu and Mo Besic are very close and it’s about getting them back to their best possible level. Physically we need giving them that introduction but they are close to making the squad for the weekend. Over the [last] weekend we picked up a worrying knock on Kevin Mirallas. He’s got a bit of a swollen ankle but I’m quite positive in Kevin being fit, even though as it stands now we are going to check and assess him for the weekend. It was a very dangerous challenge and if you review the action, he was very fortunate to escape with no major injury.”

The Scout Says: While the return of Deulofeu and Besic affords Martinez more options off the bench, Mirallas’ injury status is of more interest to Fantasy managers. The Belgian winger – whom we tipped as a Differential last Gameweek – excited us with his goal frequency last term (one every 213.7 minutes), given that Alexis Sanchez (192.4) and Sadio Mane (204.3) were the only regular midfield starters to post superior figures. In saying that, Everton’s dire schedule – which pits them against all of last year’s top eight in the next nine Gameweeks – should ensure most steer clear for now.

Midfield Woe for Villa

Jack Grealish and Carles Gil are recovering well from their respective injuries, but Tim Sherwood is unlikely to risk the pair when Villa play host to Manchester United on Friday:

“Jack and Carles are still out injured. Once we get everyone fit and fighting for places, it gives us a lot of options to play different ways, which will be crucial. Jack and Carles are training. They have had a few training sessions. But we don’t want to push them back too early because they’ve had soft tissue injuries. We don’t want them to reoccur.”

The Scout Says: Despite emerging from the opening Gameweek with a victory under their belt, Villa managed just seven attempts on goal at Bournemouth last weekend. The return of Grealish, in particular, should help the Villains improve in that regard, and place question marks over Scott Sinclair’s role on the left. Sherwood set his side up in a 4-3-3 last weekend and, with big-money signing Jordan Ayew handed the right flank role; it remains to be seen whether Sinclair can remain at the top of the pecking order for long – all the more so given that the Villa boss has also been heavily linked with a move for Barcelona wide man Adama Traore. With some decent fixtures to follow the United match (cry, SUN, lei, WBA), those looking for a budget option could consider Ashley Westwood (4.5), who provided the assist for Rudy Gestede’s weekend winner.

Clasie remains doubtful for Saints

Jordy Clasie ramped up his rehabilitation from a hamstring injury with a run-out for the Southampton U21s on Monday but was forced off with a fresh knock just after the break.

The Scout Says: With Clasie looking uncertain to feature at home to Everton, Steven Davis looks likely to earn another start alongside Victor Wanyama in the double pivot. Although he’s better known for his metronomic passing than his defensive capabilities, no midfielder tallied more interceptions than Davis (five) in Gameweek 1, suggesting he’s an able stand-in for Clasie. That’s positive news for those managers who sourced Saints defensive coverage in light of the south coast club racking up 11 home clean sheets last term. With showdowns against just three of last year’s top seven in the next 12 Gameweeks, the Saints defence remains a likely source of defensive points, despite conceding twice at Newcastle last Sunday.

Cabella and Dummett step up fitness

Steve McClaren revealed that Paul Dummett and Remy Cabella are set to return to full training this week, though Emmanuele Riviere could be forced to undergo surgery on an ongoing knee problem.

The Scout Says: Considering that Riviere mustered just one goal and assist across 23 outings in the previous campaign, it’s safe to suggest that his absence wouldn’t be felt on the Fantasy scene. Cabella (6.5) carded a similarly underwhelming attacking output last term (one goal and two assists), yet his underlying statistics hint towards latent potential: only Moussa Sissoko (44) engineered more shooting opportunities (43) among the Toon midfield, while his key pass frequency (one every 55.4 minutes) bested the likes of Jack Colback (74.9) and Sissoko (74). Given that McClaren fielded Gabriel Obertan on the left last weekend, Cabella will be hoping to force his way into the Magpies’ plans after last year’s disappointment. Dummett’s imminent return should see him vie with Massadio Haidara for the left-back berth, though the latter, like Obertan, strengthened his claim for a regular role by supplying an assist against the Saints last weekend.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

A couple of discussions have arisen in our latest Scout Picks discussion. Thought it would be good to open these up to the community to discuss as well.

Skrtel v Clyne. Will Skrtel continue to be a bonus point darling? Is his goal threat real anymore? Is Clyne the better option, or has Skrtel still got what it takes?

Rooney a good option this week. the Captain poll says he is. But is he. Are there better striking options this week and is Rooney in our teams on history alone?

So far they back up a point I was making that he still has the threat (although I'm not keen on picking defenders for that in the main as goals are rare) but could be falling short in bonus. Great passing stats as ever, but Lovren and Clyne outgunned him on the other BPS criteria. If that trend continues I think it'd be fair to push Clyne more. But early days yet and Skrtel has plenty of time to fire in those headers and rack up some more CBI.

Is Benteke a strong captaincy candidate for this upcoming GW? If Rooney is captaincy material is he worth having? He's 10.5 and for that price he should be a heavyhitter and a no-brainer for captaincy vs a team like VIlla taking into consideration MUFC record at Villa..

On the first point, I think everyone just wants to see Gomez get a run, the other 2 seem far less enticing.

Had him as captain to begin with but wavering now. Pelle or a risky Theo

Rooney is in my team as a placeholder for Aguero.

I won't be captaining him this week.

He was hardly fantastic against Tottenham, and the Walker OG just proves to me that playing midfield for so long, he has lost that instinct to play up front.
A much younger Rooney would have smashed it in first time, no hesitation.

They were generous letting you place the threshold at 16. I think you'll be ok there. They're got no one else!! But on that basis... 16's not good enough for Utd... :D:D

I'd probably go with Skrtel until we see how attacking Clyne is. A thing to consider is that Skrtel is very much a YC magnet.

He's a decent option. I'd probably prefer Benteke, Gomis, Pelle, Sakho over him though.

I don't think there is much between Skrtel and Clyne

Rooney is just not looking great right now, but he is also the kind of player who can be pretty poor and still pick up FPL points.

For this week I say Benteke, Sakho and Gomis

Personally Rooney is somewhat of a comfort blanket, It felt nice and safe to start with him this year with the doubts over Aguero and Costa, being the only striker at United helped.

We only have the one game to go on but i was not impressed with him, he will be in my team until GW 4 when he makes way for Aguero. That could happen with 2FT for GW3 if Aguero hits it this week

He hasn't scored vs Villa away since 2007 (Brace, Penalty miss, Reo-coker sent off for villa).

So I have absolutely no idea why he is top of the polls.

United's MF should dominate Villa and thus Roo will get great service all game long. I'm still not sure about him vs Kane for the C...but we are already at Rooney's last chance and it is only the second GW.

Gomez surely the best entry into the LFC defence. But if I had to pick one, I'd go Skrtel as the bonus point system seems to favour CBs.

I currently have the (C) on Sakho and (VC) on Sanchez. Gomis another good pick this week.

I don't think he's nailed on. I think they'll use Gomez when they need a more defensively minded player, often away, but Moreno when they need more going forward. I can see them playing Moreno against Bournemouth.

Not sure Rooney is the best captain option, but still a very good one imo, in a week without the standout candidate.
He is the main striker for United and probably on penalties, playing against a tim sherwood team.

Benteke (C), Rooney (VC) for me

Without looking at any stats I prefer Clyne.

I'm not a stats man, more of man from the stands. So Clyne would be my pick for FPL purpose, where attacking forays give direct returns. However Gomez would be a cheeky pick if he can nail his spot in the starting XI.

fwiw I'm keeping Roo until at least GW3 (NEW) - a very likely captaincy candidate for me. Hopefully he will get his goals this week and next.

Skrtel, imo. That he picked up a bonus point despite getting a yellow card, and having a bit of an off-day by his usual CBI standards, should tell you a lot.

      Clyne > Skrtel

He has ability to get fair few assists and occasional goals. Skrtel just occasional goals.

      Captain debate less clear cut.

Man Utd aren't as gung ho as before which limits Rooney's appeal.

Swansea look exciting and Gomis looks confident. He would be my pick if I had him.

Benteke and Kane also decent options.

Have Rooney but going Kane. Then need to decide who to sell for Aguero!

If I had Pelle I'd be very tempted...

Clyne in my opinion, esp against newly promoted Bournemouth at Anfield. I expect more attack from that right hand side and thus may be an assist for Clyne.

Captaincy...? I still think Arsenal would bounce back from that dreadful start. That being said, I won't captain Ozil/Walcott ( yes I have both, AND KEEPING THEM). But so much goes through Wayne Rooney that he seems a "safe" bet for captaincy for me. He would surely chip in either an assist/goal without much fuss.

So I was all set for holding my FT this week.
But now I am tempted to tinker!

    Walcott --> Payet
Koscielny --> £5m DEF (maybe even Oxford at £4m?)

Leaves me with enough cash to do Rooney to Aguero next week (maybe even with £1m spare if I choose Oxford)

    What do you think?

Mane (EVE), Hazard (mci), Payet, (LEI), Ozil, (cpl) Zaha (ARS)
    Pelle (EVE), Rooney (avl)

    Cheers

So, we're not sure whether Oxford will keep his place due to the soon fit Obiang. Surely worth the gamble though? Probably going to rise 0.1 this week, and if he starts next week, could rise another 0.1-0.2

I am very keen on holding the FT but do you guys have any better ideas?

    Ruddy (Butland)

    Prodl - OShea - Mertesacker (Ivan-Mings)

Hazard - Ozil - Mane - Sterling (brady)

    Wilson - Sakho - Rooney (c)

He will start this GW for sure. Kaboul was horrifying against Leicester. They must improve in defence and O'Shea their best option.

Woodwood met with Levy in May to discuss Harry Kane. Apparently United are making fresh enquiries but it's still 50/50 at the moment. Spurs are after Berahino maybe to partner Kane or to be his replacement.
