[sbu_large_image] Suspensions

The Suspension Tightrope claimed no new victims over the last couple of days, but there are now 13 players finely balanced at the four-yellow mark with just one match remaining in Gameweek 9.

Prior to the weekend’s action getting underway, there were ten men on the verge of a one-match suspension: Ciaran Clark, Jeffrey Schlupp, Fernandinho, Eliaquim Mangala, Matteo Darmian, Jack Colback, Oriol Romeu, Billy Jones, Dele Alli and Mark Noble were all precariously perched.

James Milner joined that cast with a late challenge on Danny Rose and rode his luck for the remainder of Liverpool’s encounter against Spurs, escaping without a red despite making a number of clumsy tackles. Meanwhile, Erik Lamela proved similarly tenacious for the home team and subsequently received his fourth caution of the campaign, placing him at risk of missing the North London derby in Gameweek 12. Spurs and Man City are the only two teams with one than one player on this week’s Tightrope, with both sides affording us two apiece.

Finally, Claudio Yacob – a midfield lynchpin for a West Bromwich Albion outfit that ranks joint-top for clean sheets (five) this term – entered the referee’s notebook for the third time in four outings, earning him caution number four for the campaign.

In terms of new suspensions, Dwight Gayle received his marching orders for two soft yellows during Crystal Palace’s 3-1 home defeat to West Ham United yesterday. The Eagles frontman was dismissed with the score level at one apiece late in the first-half and, post-match, manager Alan Pardew reckoned the decision was a little unjust:

“Our striker gets booked for a bad challenge, quite rightly. The second challenge, the referee knows he’s booked, he’s missed it by a centimetre probably and he sends him off. I thought a man of his experience perhaps should have looked at that situation and given him his final warning. I’m not excusing him from complete blame. The second challenge, he shouldn’t make. He’ll have to learn from that. Having said that, I still think it was very harsh to send him off.”

The 5.1-priced Gayle – who has started the last three outings up top – now sits out the Eagles’ trip to Leicester City next Gameweek, with Pardew likely to turn to Fraizer Campbell or Patrick Bamford if Connor Wickham fails to recover from injury in time. Given that he’s failed to net in five league appearances, Gayle may find it difficult to make an immediate return to the first XI in Gameweek 11.

Turning our attention towards players that have served their time, Eric Dier and Sebastian Coates – who toppled off the Tightrope last Gameweek – are available for selection next time out. The former will be hoping to reclaim his starting role in central midfield for the trip to Bournemouth, though Mousa Dembele staked a claim for another start with a man-of-the-match performance against Liverpool yesterday. Coates, meanwhile, will have to impress new manager Sam Allardyce to displace either Younes Kaboul or John O’Shea in central defence.

Jeremain Lens also makes a welcome return for the Black Cats, having fulfilled his duties and sat out their 1-0 loss at The Hawthorns. The Dutch midfielder – who has played a part in five of Sunderland’s eight league goals this season – could have a key part to play in the Wear-Tyne derby next Sunday as Big Sam welcomes his former club to the Stadium of Light.

What would you expect Klopp to do with Sturridge ?...Is it time for them to call time on him ?

Sturridge isn't world class. Part of being world class is being consistently at the top level.

I don't see how he really fits into an all-pressing 4-2-3-1. He could play RW, but I'd question his work rate from there. Even Benteke as the lone striker isn't known for his work rate. Klopp could eventually abandon both and get his own man.

      1. Davido989

I think we'll get a new striker if Benteke doesn't press (I don't think he will).

I think Sturridge, as brilliant as he is, is one long term injury away from being considered to be allowed to move on.

He has a slight knock and wasn't risked, so should be good for this week. He's better than Benteke and co, and I expect him to be Klopp's first choice striker

My promise to you is that Sturridge will spend his entire career as an apology for not playing again....He needs to go and be replaced by a "player"....

You have a point but so does Wakey. Liverpool can't rely on Sturridge, but Liverpool shouldn't give up on Sturridge either. Same way Dortmund don't rely as much on Reus, and haven't given up with him.

If you are buying him to be part of a talented squad, he'll be a good buy. When he's your outright main star and highest wage sink - then you are in trouble

I agree. For me, Benteke is the problem. At 32m£ you expect someone far more polished and elite. Sturridge is fine as 2nd choice, so long as the first choice striker is someone really good. Unlike Benteke.

Pool overpayed by 5-10m on both Benteke and Firmino. Not saying they're bad players (quite a fan of Firmino) but that's about 15m lost on bringing in another option upfront. I know they've had bad luck on Ings (who'll cost about £10m now), but that means they could have had a third £25m attacker this summer (and it may have been a good 'un)

Agreed completely. At least in Firmino's case, he's good enough. Benteke isn't. Money misused, yet again.

Played Mahrez ahead of him - Ayoze has got 1 weeks worth of numbers but I fancied him as my 8th forward over the stretch, eas mistake.
            Azpi (6) Bellerin (10) Janmatt (4) weren't a bad haul for a back 3.

    Butland, Ruddy
    Bellerin, Cedric, Nyom, Francis, Richards
    KDB, Mane, Payet, Ayew, Mahrez
    Pelle, Lukaku, Vardy

    1FT 6.4 ITB

I don't see any pressing needs in my attack as all have great upcoming fixtures. But..I may just ditch Mahrez for Sanchez, even if that seems a luxury transfer.

So thinking Toby for Richards with the FT, then depending on CL, taking ahit for Sanchez, Thoughts?

As an aside he made a good point re yoshida playing 31 rounded up and cedric playing 59 rounded down. I really dont get what this negative attack is against someone trying to contribute the game no matter how trivial it might seem to you not withstanding he makes a good point!

Bit frustrated that I didn't go with my gut and captain him after talking it up all week. But can't complain with 25 points from somebody owned by 2% of the game 🙂

Went from 120k > 270k, then Wij pulled me back to 99k. Also possibly won me my two H2H battles.

Ha, captaining him would've been the punt of the season! Still, 25 points is almost as much as my entire team so far (with a couple of Swansea players to follow)

Kolorov played 6 straight games at the end of last season. Not convinced he is a massive rotation risk.

I hope the same thing happens to him again and he writes another email.

That other tube going on about Pellé not getting an assist was doing my frigging tits in early.

the mean spiritedness upon this individual is not good to see at aall i must say. Even if you dont agree with his point taking this mocking nasty tone is unbecoming. I find it ironic people who obsess so much over this game ( myself included ) are critical of someone elses obsession!

    Bertrand Janmaat Dier Martin Dawson

Is it worth getting in Bellerin for one of them? I'll eventually downgrade one of them to another 4.5

no more than enough wquality already in that defence would be a waste of a transfer
