After picking up another two assists in Arsenal’s 3-0 win at Swansea, Mesut Ozil moves just behind his Gunners team-mate Alexis Sanchez in our rankings, while Riyad Mahrez’s 15-point haul in Leicester’s 3-2 victory at West Brom sees the Algerian rise up the rankings once again.

Although Man City’s fixtures (avl, LIV, SOT, sto, SWA, ars) begin to get more difficult over the next six Gameweeks, Kevin De Bruyne remains at the summit after registering three goals and four assists in just seven league appearances for the Citizens. The former Wolfsburg midfielder now sets us back 10.7 in Fantasy Premier League (FPL), but with uncertainty still surrounding Sergio Aguero’s comeback date, the club-record signing offers the best route into the City attack right now.

Despite failing to score in his last two outings, Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez’ underlying numbers remain very strong. The Chile international leads all midfielders for shots inside the box (ten) over the last four Gameweeks and with the Gunners’ fixture list over the coming period (TOT, wba, nor, SUN, avl, MCI) still pretty favourable, we should see the 11.6-priced midfielder back amongst the goals sooner rather than later.

While Sanchez has disappointed in recent weeks, the same can’t be said of his Arsenal team-mate Mesut Ozil. The German international has averaged 10 points per appearance over the last four Gameweeks, courtesy of a goal and six assists. Ozil is creating a chance every 18.6 minutes so far this season, better than any regular midfielder, so it’s little surprise he’s leading the transfers in this week – over 91,000 FPL bosses have drafted the former Real Madrid schemer in, seeing his price rise to 8.7.

Southampton’s Sadio Mane keeps his place as one of the highest rated midfielders, with Ronald Koeman’s side facing three favourable fixtures in the next four (sun, STO, mci, AVL). The Senegal international has totalled 25 touches in the penalty area over the last four Gameweeks, more than any other midfielder, and should deliver great value given his more than reasonable 8.0 price tag in FPL over the next couple of weeks.

With Leicester’s remarkable start to the season showing few signs of coming to a halt, faith in both Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez continues to be rewarded. The Algerian punished plenty of Fantasy bosses who decided to bench him last week, but with two strong fixtures (WAT, new) over the next two Gameweeks, it’s unlikely that mistake will be repeated. The Foxes do face some slightly trickier match-ups (MUN, swa, CHE, eve) thereafter, but setting us back just 6.6 in FPL, Mahrez offers us unbelievable value considering he’s racked up 85 points this season, more than any other player.

On the back of a blank against Watford, and with West Ham’s upcoming schedule (EVE, tot, WBA, mun, STO, swa) less than favourable, Dimitri Payet sees his stock fall slightly this time around. The France international’s underlying statistics are still very impressive, creating 18 chances in his last four appearances, while managing 14 goal attempts over the same period. He’s also already shown he can deliver attacking returns against strong opposition such as Arsenal and Man City, but with so many appealing options for our five-man midfields, the 8.3-valued playmaker probably doesn’t fall into the “essential” category right now.

Given that Newcastle’s upcoming fixtures (bou, LEI, cpl, LIV, tot, AVL) remain pretty favourable, Georginio Wijnaldum is maintained around halfway up our ladder. The Dutch international has managed 12 goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks, with an impressive nine of those on target. The 7.0-rated midfielder’s ownership stands at just 7.4%, and he looks a good option for those looking for an alternative to the likes of Payet and Andre Ayew.

With some favourable fixtures (liv, SUN, NEW, eve, SOT, sto) for Crystal Palace over the coming period, Yohan Cabaye stays in our thoughts. The 6.6-priced France international has mainly relied on penalties to provide attacking returns but, having accrued 10 bonus points so far this season, he can rack up double-digit scores fairly easily. Cabaye also has reasonable assist potential, with seven chances created in his last four outings.

Swansea’s Andre Ayew slides down a couple of spots in our latest refresh, with other midfielders beginning to catch our eye more than the Ghana international. The 7.1-valued attacker does have three strong fixtures (nor, BOU, liv, LEI) in the next four though, and with five goals already this season, he does have a proven track record of being able to find the back of the net.

Owners of Everton’s Ross Barkley will have been left hugely disappointed by his blank in the Toffees’ resounding 6-2 victory against Sunderland, but with more favourable fixtures to come over the next six Gameweeks (whm, AVL, bou, CPL, nor, LEI), the 6.8-rated midfielder should be able to bag some reasonable attacking points. Only two of his 12 goal attempts over the last four Gameweeks have been from inside the box, though, so his 21.8% ownership may be relying on something spectacular to garner those attacking returns.

Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho really punished the 28,000 FPL bosses who opted to ditch him last week by bringing in a spectacular 14-point haul against Chelsea. The Brazilian can be hugely frustrating to own, though, having blanked in seven of his 10 league appearances this season. Nonetheless, with the Reds’ fixture list (CPL, mci, SWA, new, WBA, wat) beginning to ease over the next few weeks, some may be prepared to take the plunge on the 8.1-priced midfielder for the long haul.

In a similar manner, Tottenham’s Christian Eriksen can also flatter to deceive. The Spurs midfielder sets us back slightly more than Coutinho, coming in at 8.4 in FPL, but has created 15 chances over the last four Gameweeks, compared to just four for the Liverpool man. With Tottenham’s fixtures (ars, WHM, CHE, wba, NEW sot) mixed over the coming period, the Denmark international may struggle to capture the imagination of Fantasy managers with so many other options available.

We’ve finally given up on Eden Hazard as our Chelsea midfielder of choice and have instead turned to Willian after the Brazilian continued his fine recent form with the winner against Dynamo Kiev last night. Hazard was handed less than an hour against Liverpool last weekend and dropped to the bench last night, with the return of Pedro posing further questions over his pitch time. At a price of just 6.8, Willian has bagged two goals and an assist in the last five Gameweeks and looks a valid mid-price option with some very favourable fixtures (sto, NOR, tot, BOU, lei, SUN) to follow.

With two goals and an assist in his last six appearances, and with his price now down to 5.6 in FPL, we’ve once again found a place for Matt Ritchie towards the bottom of or ladder. The Bournemouth midfielder has a plum home fixture against Newcastle on Saturday, although the rest of the Cherries’ schedule over the next month or so (swa, EVE, che, MUN, wba) is mixed, so expect the Scotland international to stay on the periphery of our thoughts for the time being.

While Mane is regularly talked about as an outstanding Fantasy asset, his Southampton team-mate Dusan Tadic has actually outscored him by 55 points to 53 so far this season. The Serbia international probably has less explosive potential, but in a similar way to Ozil, can be relied upon for a steady dose of assists, and coming in at 7.0 in FPL, that valuable commodity shouldn’t be underestimated.

Falling all the way to the bottom of our rankings this week is Man United’s Juan Mata. The underlying statistics are hugely concerning for the Spaniard, with just two goal attempts in his last four outings, while he only created five chances over the same period. United’s fixtures (WBA, wat, lei, WHM, bou, NOR) are more favourable over the next few weeks, but following four consecutive blanks, and with Jesse Lingard’s involvement in the first team pouring some doubt onto his starting position, the 8.8-valued midfielder probably has too many question marks surrounding him right now to earn a place in our congested midfield line-ups.

Has he taken one with Mahrez on the pitch ? . I don't think Ranieri said anything about Vardy taking pens to continue the run either ? . I presume it will be status quo unless Ranieri says otherwise . Ranieri seems keen to promote unity and has gone out of his way not to talk up Mahrez or Vardy . I don't think he will care about the run and won't take pens off Mahrez .

Basically KDB has more touches (including in the peno box) passes, crosses, through balls, key passes and assists.

Mahrez has more attempts on goal and shots on target. For me, I read that as Mahrez is more direct and more likely to score but De Bruyne is more involved in play and more likely to rack up an assist or two. Pays your money and takes your choice.

      o/

      Reasoning:
o Want to roll my transfer so I have 2Fts after internationals - helps me out for KunPlan and also if the international break brings more injuries
o United have to sort it out and play better, surely? And Leicester beat WBA at home, so WBA aren't impenetrable; if United figure it out it could be a 2-3 goal home winning margin
o LvG said Martial is a no. 9 this week (see Say What?). Let's hope he actually plays him in that role!

I almost brought him in 2 weeks ago, but decided that with Young and Blind around, it wasn't worth the risk of rotation and settled for DDG.

He gets forward, United have a great defence, it's up to you if you want to risk him not starting sometimes.

Yea those are my issues, i am also looking at DDG but i think Rojo could be more potent to be honest. Just scared of getting him in now before the INT break and not having 2 FT for that reason. Need to resolve the benching headache i created for myself stupidly.

It seems with DDG (and what you won't get with other top keepers) is that he'll rack up the save points. Got me 9 points on debut last week, which is like throwing an assist onto a clean sheet. Not bad, for the security of starts.

Rojo will probably be nailed but i'm a bit of a wimp with situations like this - i like to go for a nailed option. I think you're better off having 2 FTs for the INT break if you can field a defence this week.

Oh yea, i have pretty solid options in the back. Huth / Williams/ Cresswell / VvD and injured Bellerin. I can easily field 3, just debating who. I really want to get rid of Cresswell / Williams but Myhill/Butland combo doesnt look to convincing now.

Also, created a beast top 8 to cause even more problems. Need to use one FT to get 4.3 Mid fodder.

I would think he starts 80% of PL games - can't see Young being preferred there long term and LVG seems to prefer Blind to Jones at centre back. There might be some variation in these combos hence the 80%. Since the away game at CSKA he's looked a lot more solid defensively and could have scored a couple Tuesday night.

Slimani didn't start last GW and Corluka is suspended. Also strong rumours Aubameyang won't start.

        Maybe Anderson ---> Mkhitaryan/Commons/Mamaev/El Kaddouri
        Aubameyang ---> Bakambu/Insigne/Aduriz/Kalinic

        I think I also need a defender.

yeah, Slimani probably won't start again (Montero)
I'm bringing in Kaddouri and Mamaev, but considering Gabbiadini in attack over Insigne
Raul Garcia over Aduriz but only because I need funds
Can't find any concrete info about Aub, currently still have him in the team
Selling Matip too, Verhaeg and Strinic look tempting...

Francis > Moreno, im almost sure
    BUT
Dawson > Rojo, how about that?
(OFC -4, i prefer not to do that, but im sure WBA would concede 1, not more, not less, and ManU CS potential is very tempting)

The brief discussion about Hazard, and our pre-season thoughts, has me thinking about predictions I got wrong.

Chelsea to battle with, and probably beat, Man City for the title.

Sterling to be the next SWP (after seeing him recently, I think I did him a real disservice and there is actually a lot more to his game than his pace).

Leicester and West Ham to struggle with new managers - delighted to be proven so wrong with this.

Everton to struggle in the bottom half - even more delighted if I continue to be proven wrong with this (though my pre-season concerns about Howard, our centre back depth, and Martinez's ability to organise a defence still hold true).

I am hoping that the next one I am proven wrong about is my belief that Kane would really struggle this season (relative to last). Had until his hat trick, but with him sat in my team I hope he shows what an idiot I am.

Anyone else get any predictions wildly wrong? It can be tiring seeing the "LOL AT _____! I PREDICTED THIS CORRECTLY!" nonsense, it's nice to acknowledge that we're all idiots really sometimes 😉

Looking into the idea that Arsenal vs Tottenham is a ‘combustible’ fixture, and one where ‘form book goes out the window.’

Head to Head results shows it really was a rip-roaring affair from around 06/07 right up to the last 2 seasons where it’s slowed down.

Up until 13/14 it averaged about 4 goals a game!! (This is home and away fixtures, all comps.)

In 13/14, 14/15 and so far in 15/16, the fixture has only been won by more than 1 goal once, in a 2-0 (Theo on the stretcher in the hail of angry coins). Avg. goals per game a little under 2.5.

So ‘combustible’ and high-scoring? Yes it very much has been for about a decade, though with a small recent history of not living up to that.

I’m going to look at the next idea through the prism of whether or not to captain Alexis Sanchez for this one – because I guess that’s the most common decision being weighed up on here.

For that I’m taking the back-to-back 5-2 Arsenal wins in 2011/12 and 2012/13. I’m looking at those because they’re pretty much the dream scenario for potential Sanchez captainers who will be asking, can lightning strike thrice?

Taking into account Tottenham’s strong defensive form so far this season, did the form book really ‘go out the window’ in those games? (And can we expect it to happen again?).

    In 2011/12 the 5-2 came in GW26.
Previous x4 fixtures for Spurs that year they ranked 4th top for defence with only 4 goals conceded, x2 cleansheets (2nd top), in the upper third for SitB and about mid-table for big chances conceded.

So yes, here the form book really did go out the window.

In 2012/13 it happened again (“It happened again, it happened agaaaain etc.)
This time in GW12. Previous x4 Spurs defensive form was… actually pretty bad this time: conceding 8 goals (so avg. 2 goals a game), joint 2nd worst with Fulham, top 4 for big chances conceded (joint with Arsenal as it happens!).

So here the form book was spared it’s ignominious arcing plunge out through window, and Spurs were just on a bad run defensively and that continued (though having said that a jump from conceding x2 goals a game to conceded 5 is… not great either. Maybe it did go out the window, but it was already sitting on the ledge and there was a strong breeze).

This post is probably too long already but I think there’s enough history to say that this fixture really does combust more than most, sparks fly, and the form book can (but doesn’t always) go out the proverbial.

My personal thoughts: Arsenal’s attack is undoubtedly good enough to make a mockery of a good defence regardless of all of this, as it did with Man Utd’s recently. Having not made an impact in this fixture before I wouldn’t be surprised if Sanchez is fired up. He’s a man of the people type of guy and understands what these types of games mean. He goes for goal a lot on an average day, this week I think he’ll get a machine gun out.

I put him as the top captaincy candidate for the week ahead of the Leicester, Man City, and Saints options.

No, nice post. I think you're right. Ever since the Martin Jol and Spurs flirting with the top 4 (I wish I knew how to do an embarrassed smilie) the NLD has been as you say 'combustible'.

Kane owners should also consider that he scored a brace the last time these two met in the league (albeit at WHL). With Sanchez , it was pointed out that he has was quiet in this fixture because he he played a total of 27mins in both legs combined.

The point holds though, that players who play with some passion do get fired up for this fixture so that point cannot be underestimated for a potential Sanchez/Kane captaincy.

A ward of caution though: this fixture has been a more 'mellow' affair in terms of goals scored at least has been due to the discipline that Pochettino has brought to this Spurs side. The first 5-2 drubbing was in the Redknapp era where Spurs were gung-ho attacking with no defensive discipline - anyone remember Redknapp slumping in his chair when Arsenal pulled it back 2-2 with no clue as to what to do? The second one was when Adebayor got sent off after opening the scoring.

When considering that those factors are not really present at the moment I'd be cautious of the idea that Spurs will concede big. Poch will want his players to play with a passion on Sunday but not at the expense of defensive discipline.

        Sorry for the long post

Thanks, Doolittle. That's a good point.

I've just looked into Poch's Spurs record in the big head to heads and they did concede 3 goals in a game to Man Utd last season, 3 goals in a game to Liverpool (twice), 3 goals in a game to Chelsea (twice - though one was winning 5-3!), and 4 goals in a game to Man City.

So he didn't have a great record in the big games last year (obviously he was just starting out etc etc - but still...)

Team Zambia is recruiting for high caliber individuals to represent it in the upcoming FIFFSA world cup. If you can point to Zambia on a map, or more importantly, know what you're doing in FPL (will be forensically verified by an fpl dullard), you owe it to yourself to answer the call. Are you a chipolopolo?
