Scout Scribbles – International Round Up

Southampton sweat on Virgil van Dijk’s fitness, as the towering defender is ruled out of Holland’s friendly with Germany on Tuesday. Elsewhere, Riyad Mahrez continues to provide the catalyst for unlikely revivals as Algeria peg back Tanzania in their World Cup qualifier.

Crocked Van Dijk Returns Home

Having been withdrawn at half time in the Netherlands’ match-up against Wales due to a minor knee complaint, Virgil van Dijk has been ruled out of Oranje’s friendly with Germany on Tuesday and will return to the south coast. Meanwhile, Cedric Soares played the full 90 minutes for Portugal in their 1-0 defeat to Russia, while Jose Fonte was an unused substitute.

The Scout Says: Since making the switch to Southampton last summer, Van Dijk has quickly showcased the attacking potential that saw him notch 10 goals in all competitions for Celtic in the previous campaign. Aside from bagging two goals in eight league outings, the Dutch centre-back places joint-third among defenders for attempts (six) and top for shots on target (four) over the last six Gameweeks. Considering that Saints enjoy home clashes against Stoke City and Aston Villa – who rank joint-bottom for goals scored (10) – in the next three Gameweeks, their strong clean-sheet prospects will have Van Dijk’s 3.5% ownership hoping for a speedy recovery. Van Dijk currently ranks second in our Watchlist for defenders and will remain there whilst we wait on news of this potential injury setback.

As for Soares, he will have welcomed the 90 minutes for his country having been benched against Sunderland last time out, with Maya Yoshida handed the right-back role. It remains to be seen if he can reclaim a Saints’ starting berth following the break – Soares would seem likely to feature in Wednesday’s friendly with Luxembourg before returning to the south coast ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Stoke. Meanwhile, Yoshida will be forced to travel to Cambodia for Japan’s next World Cup qualifier on Tuesday afternoon – that long-haul flight could well factor against him ahead of the Potters clash.

Mahrez Inspires Algerian Comeback

Riyad Mahrez served up an assist during Algeria’s 2-2 draw against Tanzania. The midfielder provided a defence-splitting pass for the equalising goal, having also played a part in Algeria’s opener as they fought back to earn an unlikely draw.

The Scout Says: Mahrez continues to impress, as his Fantasy owners consider their options ahead of Leicester’s toughening schedule of fixtures.

Behind his partner in crime, Jamie Vardy (53%), Mahrez (58%) is the top-owned player in the Fantasy Premier League (FPL). The 6.7-priced midfielder boasts seven goals and five assists across 11 outings and is posting underlying statistics that show he’s not just profiting from an unsustainable shot-conversion rate; since Mahrez reclaimed his starting berth in Gameweek 10, he ranks joint-third among midfielders for attempts (nine), second for shots inside the box (seven) and joint-first for shots on target (four). The Foxes’ schedule toughens considerably beyond their trip to Newcastle next Gameweek, though (MUN, swa, CHE, eve, liv, MCI), which could stymie the Algerian’s astonishing momentum and even convince some to consider an exit plan.

Mahrez will now be preparing for Algeria’s second leg with Tanzania which takes place on Tuesday in Bilda, before flying back to Leicester ahead of the Tyneside trip on Saturday. It remains to be seen if his international exertions will cast doubt on his chances of starting at Newcastle – given his two-goal contribution in his last away trip at West Brom, it would seem unlikely that Claudio Ranieri would risk omitting him from the starting XI.

Bentaleb Returns But Dembele A Doubt

Nabil Bentaleb is in line to return to Tottenham Hotspur’s matchday squad after clocking 45 minutes for Algeria against Tanzania. Elsewhere in the Spurs camp, Christian Eriksen started and lasted the distance for Denmark in their play-off against Sweden, but Mousa Dembele sat out Belgium’s 3-1 victory over Italy on Friday with a calf knock. However, Belgium’s manager, Marc Wilmots, remains optimistic on Dembele’s return against Spain on Tuesday…

“We are working on an individual programme with Mousa to get him ready for the game against Spain. Because he was not certain to play, I selected an extra midfielder, [Anderlecht’s] Steven Defour.”

Dembele is also playing down the injury…

“I received a kick over the weekend, it is not that bad but it is just a bit swollen – that’s it.”

The Scout Says: Dele Alli and Eric Dier have excelled as a midfield partnership for Spurs this campaign, but Mauricio Pochettino will be wary of over-exerting a youthful duo that lay claim to just 44 league starts between them. As such, it would come as little surprise if Bentaleb is afforded sporadic starts at the expense of the emerging Alli.

A series of strong displays and two goals have cemented Dembele as a key component of Spurs’ attacking midfield three. Currently being deployed in the number ten berth, the Belgian appears to be flourishing in the new attacking role. Priced at 5.3 in FPL, he offers a viable midfield downgrade option for those seeking to liberate funds for the purchase of Sergio Aguero. While Dembele’s stock is on the rise, Christian Eriksen has struggled to build on promising form since his return from injury: the Dane has recorded just one shot on target and one assist since his brace in Gameweek 8.

Howe Looks To King To Step Up

Returning to domestic action, Bournemouth manager Eddie Howe has pinpointed Joshua King as the man to solve his side’s goal drought. The Cherries boss asserted that the Norwegian’s pace potentially renders him a better fit to their brand of football than Glenn Murray:

“I think Joshua gives us that pace up front which Callum had. It is no secret we are still searching for a balance that suits our players. I hope I am not still saying that in two or three months’ time because we are aware we have to find the solutions quite quickly… that is not a criticism of Glenn (Murray), who is an outstanding player in his own right, but the lads have been used to having a quick number nine. I think when the team has adapted to playing a certain way, it is difficult to then change but Glenn has had a couple of good games for us and is a really useful player to have.”

The Scout Says: King replaced Murray at half time against Southampton in Gameweek 11 and subsequently retained that berth for Bournemouth’s 1-0 home defeat against Newcastle. Pitched as a 4.6-priced midfielder in the FPL, there’s obvious scope for King to flourish as a budget, out-of-position prospect – particularly when Howe’s quotes suggest he’s willing to hand the 23-year-old a run of starts. Although the Cherries failed to net in their last two outings, only Liverpool (30) fashioned more key passes (27) during that time frame, which offers hope that goals are imminent. Nonetheless, King – who tallied just three goals in his final 48 league appearances for Blackburn Rovers – still has a lot to prove as the south coast outfit gear up for an unforgiving quartet of match-ups (swa, EVE, che, MUN).

    Hi all.
Need some advice with this bunch.

    Butland, Schmeichel
    Kolarov, Francis, Toby, Ward, Moreno
    Ozil, KDB, Sanchez, Mahrez, Westwood
    Vardy, Martial, Pelle

    1ft, 3.7m in account.

    Eye on Aguero..

I'll write this as if you were playing your WC, but I know you can't make all these changes:

Goalkeepers look a little dodgy for coming fixtures, Kolarov good but be careful of rotation with clichy now, You might need some big hitters in Defense but Toby (Alderweireld?) looks good, Good midfield. Attack alright but watch They all look like their points are drying up

If I was playing wc on this team Id ditch De Bruyne and get a better Defense + Goalies - good attackig team though and you can put Agüero in next week yes?

During my Week 9 WC, I shipped Mahrez out after seeing the Tinkerman choosing to bench him. So far, I've managed to dodge dropping ranks despite some explosive returns from Mahrez (the GW many have benched him and his recent blank for giving the pen to Vardy).

    Should I:
a.) Bring Mahrez back in for Payet (FT)
b.) Don't bring Mahrez back, go for Ozil/Deulofou/Barkley due to tough fixtures for LEI, favourable for ARS/EVE

    Appreciate all inputs. Thanks!

I would not bring Mahrez back because Lcstr fixtures turn terrible, and one of Vardy/Mahrez at least will not bring a lot of returns
Ozil is the best bet from the bunch. He's probably the best player in PL at the moment, but of course costs much more, so I guess it depends how it affects your future purchases, because unless he gets injured, I doubt you could transfer him out.

Out of the other 2, I'd take Barkley, consistently features, and is bound to score

Coutinho is unpredictable. His goals are more luck/ability to shoot from afar, than anything.
If you plan to bring him anyways, then you can bring him now, as I feel he can score against anyone.

I hate him as a fantasy player due to his lack of inconsistency and poor playmaking skill (while being a playmaker)

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

How has a credible five-man midfield gone for those who have shunned the tried and tested cheap fifth midfielder strategy in recent weeks?

For me its not gone so well, with Mahrez and Mata just the latest high scoring benchees. I’m looking to go back to the old cheap fifth mid route with the expensive likes of Kane and Aguero crying out for my attention.

But I still think there’s room for improvement on this old strategy. Instead of having say a Boyd or a Lanzini that will play and are good value I’m looking for the cheapest possible midfielder and instead use a defender slot as my preferred ‘spare man’ to come on at the front of my bench.

So with that in mind which cheap fifth midfielders are you considering or already have? Do you mind if they are just a 2pt a game sort of player? Are you also considering improving your defence to have a good fourth defender to lead your subs if needed?

As an example with 41 pts Watford defender Cathcart at 4.5m looks just a good an option if not better than Lei midfielder Drinkwater, who is priced the same and on 37 pts, the highest of any 4.5m or lower midfielder.

I agree. I prefer the cheap 5th and maybe going as cheap as physically possible for the 5th and hopefully get lucky with injuries. I'm tempted by Ali as 5th

I benched Mahrez, then Mata, same as yourself. So not too well. Think I'll stick to a 4.3 bench mid for the rest of the season...

The 4.3 I'm looking at is Watson.

I like the Watford defence, so I can see a few 3pters. I already have Cathcart and Ighalo though, but I can't imagine wanting another Watford player down the line, so I'm not concerned about blocking myself.

A defender over the Christmas rotation could be gold considering tiredness could contribute to surprise cleansheets. But it is very hard to ignore Boyd-style heroics with higher ceilings from our 5th mids. I am personally looking at Drinkwater.

Also, while we are all Kun-less, my power5 mids have been great, someone has always been injured resulting in no benching headaches. 😉

Created a new comment instead of a reply.

Mahrez was my cheap mid from starters, and outside missing a large score on him once, I was always able to rotate my front 7 (helped all were from different teams) and bench ones with tough fixtures.

Now the mid-cheap midfielders form is not as great injuries (Payet), loss of form (Ayew) and fixtures turning bad (Mahrez), so I'll probably have to rethink this strategy.

Your strategy of a cheap def is nice as long as the defenders are bound for CS once in a while. Watford FYI have a horrid schedule starting GW17. I'd monitor AV who'll have quite the kinder run starting the same GW.

Good point re Aston Villa. In midfield and defence could be some real bargains there...especially over Christmas.

I couldn't agree more jonty. ... That's been my exact plan. I'm going for cart as 4th defender and downgrading payet to cabaye.

Jus seems the clever way to go

I'm going sub 4.5m for my 5th mid and from GW17 on will likely put them behind Dawson/Moreno (my 4th def) on the bench since they both have nice fixtures

I have already switched back to a cheap midfielder and gone really cheap as chips by doing Payet to Stanislas. Yes, it is a punt, but I don't hope to ever have to play him but he has been playing ok anyway.

I already have 4 attacking full backs plus Dawson as my defenders and they will occupy the first two of my bench positions. Getting Stanislas enables Pelle to Aguero after this GW, and gone are my hours of deliberation on who to leave on the bench.

      Butland, Mccarthy
      Kolo, Janmaat, Moreno, Bellers, Dawson
      Alexis, KDB, Mahrez, Mane, Stanislas
      Lukaku, Pelle, Vardy

I've stuck with 3-4-3 as I don't like the benching issues.
I always try and make sure my bench is full of starters. Even now I don't mind Simpson as the 5th defender as there's always a chance of a return.
I prefer the option of rotating 3 out of 4 decent defenders. I've fallen into the Janmaat trap of watching a player who likes to get forward rather than actually looking at what sort of assist returns he actually gets and what his cs record is. So he'll be going soon.
Westwood has been my 5th midfielder all season and I've not used him as 1st sub is always my 4th defender. Again I wouldn't have a 5th midfielder costing more than 4.5-4.6m I'd rather use any spare cash to strengthen the defence rotation.
It's my defence that has taken me up into the top 50k since Aguero got injured and a dreadful start to the season. With so many template midfield / forwards in the 3-5-2 sides I've gone past many of them through defender point gains.

I got Lingard, planning on getting a strong back line with a defender as my first sub.

Since gw9.....mediocre at best. Decisions to sell Mahrez and buy Mane and Ighalo, and forego Kane / Lukaku, resulted in net fewer FPL points. KDB slowing down is a wash as he would have been in both configurations. I will likely have one more week of 3-5-2 to go, but Mahrez is now back on my team, from Payet, and with Ighalo vs Man Utd, he will be benched in lieu of a five man midfield for gw13. Aguero return for gw14 will revert team to 3-4-3 formation.

Has gone well for me, Aguero money allowed Westwood to KDB, Ighalo up front, but no benching problems, as i picked the right call each week fortunately.

Will probably revert to cheap 5th once Aguero is back.

Surman at 4.3 with no bookings is the best option if you want them playing but not interested in upside

Two meaty red arrows since the switch to 3-5-2. Enough's enough. The 3-5-2 has not gone well these past 2 gwks...AT ALL. And to be honest, it never ever has.

Back to 3-4-3 then. I'm looking at Drinkwater who is 4.5, plays every week and has 4-5 assists to his name already. Not that he'll ever see the light of day.

The only issue with him is that he becomes my 3rd LEI player and I suspect plenty are in the same boat owning Vardy and Mahrez.

I would like Simpson as a 4.0 enabler too. May have to stretch to Davis at 4.8 and bank on this unlikely scoring run continuing.
