Scout Squad

The Scout Squad – Gameweek 13

Our Tuesday evening regular returns once again, as we give you an early heads-up on our Scout Picks thinking for the Gameweek ahead. This list of 22 players will also include some names in contention for a place in our Spot the Differential article, though will, of course, be subject to change, depending on the injury situation as the week unfolds.

For Gameweek 13, here’s who we are considering…

Goalkeepers

Between the posts, David de Gea (5.6) is the cheapest secure route into a United defence looking for a fifth straight shut-out away to Watford. With doubts over Kurt Zouma’s availability, we turn to Asmir Begovic as a cut-price Chelsea option – the Bosnian should, at the very least, offer us save points if he concedes at home to Norwich.

Defenders

If, as expected, we plump for our customary three-man defence, Scott Dann (5.2) looks likely to make the cut, given that he’s pitted against a Sunderland attack that’s failed to score in three of their previous four road ties. Amongst defenders, Dann is joint-top for efforts in the area in the last four Gameweeks.

Eric Dier (5.2) also has a great shot at making our final XI as Spurs gear up for West Ham’s visit. With Dimitri Payet sidelined for the Hammers, the England international gets the nod over the likes of Toby Alderweireld and Danny Rose by virtue of his out-of-position potential and threat from set pieces.

Chris Smalling (6.7) remains the only sure-fire starter in Man United’s defence ahead of their Vicarage Road encounter. Over in the blue half of Manchester, Nicolas Otamendi (6.5) is our preferred City option for their home match against Liverpool due to concern over Vincent Kompany’s calf injury and the increased competition at full-back.

Everton’s home encounter against Aston Villa – who’ve scored twice in five outings – looks conducive to their first clean sheet in seven fixtures, bringing the attack-minded Seamus Coleman (5.9) onto our radar.

Doubts over Hector Bellerin’s capacity to start at West Bromwich Albion means that Laurent Koscielny is our favoured route into Arsenal’s rearguard. Moreover, the France international lays claim to superior form, with two goals in his last three outings.

Virgil van Dijk (5.6) left the Netherlands squad because of a knee injury but expects to be passed fit for Saturday, as Saints go in pursuit of their third consecutive clean sheet when Stoke roll up to St Mary’s Stadium.

The Magpies face a tall task carding their third straight clean sheet when the Foxes pay a visit, but Daryl Janmaat’s (4.9) marauding instincts could be facilitated by the visitors’ generous defence.

Midfielders

City’s Kevin de Bruyne (10.7) is an obvious option in the centre of the park. The Belgian brought his fine form onto the international stage with a goal and an assist for Belgium and could profit from the return of Sergio Aguero against the Merseysiders.

Arsenal’s dominance on the attacking front has us weighing up the merits of doubling up on Alexis Sanchez (11.6) and Mesut Ozil (8.9), given that hosts West Brom have conceded three times in four of their six home outings. Such a scenario would likely prompt us to go with five across the midfield to exploit the wealth of enticing mid-priced pick-ups.

Sadio Mane (8.0) also netted for his nation during the international break but faces off against a Stoke outfit that’s claimed four clean sheets in the last five Gameweeks. In appreciation of the Potters’ recent form, we’re unlikely to go heavy on our Southampton coverage and Mane may yet slip below Graziano Pelle in the Scout Picks pecking order.

Considering that all six of his goals have arrived at home and Leicester’s defence has been breached in all their away matches, Georginio Wijnaldum (7.0) continues to pique our interest. Meanwhile, if Jamie Vardy fails to shake off his hip complaint prior to the weekend, we’ll be eyeing up Riyad Mahrez (6.7) for Leicester’s trip to St James’.

Finally, it would be remiss of us to ignore Gerard Deulofeu’s (6.2) form ahead of the Toffees’ favourable head-to-head against the Villans. The winger produced one goal and four assists in his last trio of league starts and has notched twice for Spain Under 21s this evening, taking his tally to five strikes over the international break.

Forwards

At this point we’re not considering the aforementioned Aguero until we hear more from the City camp. Instead we’ve opted for a cast of alternatives, headed up by a pair of in-form goalscorer.

Romelu Lukaku looks certain to be included in our Scout Picks, given that the 8.6-priced hitman has scored in back-to-back ties and locks horns with a Villa defence that conceded 13 goals in their previous five road fixtures.

Similarly, Harry Kane’s (9.4) renewed confidence has harvested five goals in three outings. The Lilywhites are unbeaten at home this campaign and have already put four past leaders City at the Lane.

We’re leaning towards the Gunners’ midfield in terms of attacking coverage, but there’s a chance that Olivier Giroud (8.8) could muscle his way into our lineup. The French target man has flourished in Theo Walcott’s absence, quietly accruing six goals in just 622 minutes. With Walcott still on the sidelines, Giroud’s Hawthorn’s start looks guaranteed.

Graziano Pelle’s (8.5) propensity for scoring on home turf bodes well for the Potters match-up, yet the Italian’s inferior form when compared to the above-mentioned trio of forwards works against him – he’s managed just one shot on target in the last four Gameweeks.

A shoo-in under normal circumstances, fitness concerns over Jamie Vardy (7.4) could yet steer us towards fielding a two-man strike partnership, affording us more freedom to explore the possibility of an Arsenal double-up in midfield.

On Standby

Beyond those players listed above, there are myriad of honourable mentions that could yet push themselves into the weekend reckoning.

Bournemouth midfielder Joshua King (4.6) looks set to retain his role up front , furnishing us with a budget, out-of-position option ahead of the Cherries’ trip to Swansea. Newcastle’s Ayoze Perez (5.1) notched three goals in his last six starts and is emerging as a viable enabler.

Southampton’s Dusan Tadic (7.1) has amassed eight more points (63 compared to 55) than popular team-mate Mane, while Mousa Dembele (5.3) is experiencing a rare purple-patch on the goal front (two in three). We need to see if he shrugs off an injury before assessing the Belgian as an option, though. Yannick Bolasie (6.1) is handed a great chance to score in successive matches when the Eagles host a Sunderland side that places top for goals conceded (26). The Eagles wide man has netted in both matches for DR Congo over the break.

We’re also not ruling out the likes of Wayne Hennessey, Willian, Jonathan Walters, Andre Ayew and Christian Eriksen, who are all well placed to serve as profitable investments in the upcoming Gameweek.

The Community Champion

Having scrapped the weekly vote idea from last season, we now operate a lottery system to pick our weekly candidates. The community member who beats our picks by the biggest margin over the campaign will win a £100 Amazon Voucher and a place in our Contributors and Moderators League for the following season.

Gameweek 12’s community champion Prophet failed to defeat the Scout Picks, as we clinched victory by 48 points to 32. Massive stays in the lead to claim the £100 Amazon voucher, though, after beating us by 16 points in Gameweek 6.

Gameweek 13’s Community Champion as selected by our lottery, is Jossy, who is a seasoned veteran currently in his tenth Fantasy Premier League season. Over the last decade he has accrued two top 5,000 finishes.

In addition to a shot at the £100 Amazon prize, FantasyBet are offering a chance for further prizes to Community Champions that are eligible to play their games. More details can be found here.

Struggling to choose a captain. Vardy yellow flag is offputting

    KDB Sanchez Tadic Mahrez
    Vardy Pelle Ighalo

Who would you go for? Or maybe even sell Pelle for Kane(c)?

Just seems wrong ahead of Stoke at home and with aguero maybe coming in soon for that spot

GW13 Scores from my cheeky little model:

      Kane: 17.40
      Ozil: 15.65
      Vardy: 14.63
      Giroud: 12.31
      Lukaku: 11.27
      .
      .
      Mane: 8.37
      Sanchez: 7.84
      .
      .
      .
      Pelle: 2.679

So Vardy for me...unless you drop Pelle for the top candidate for this week. 🙂

Interesting model. I assume it is based on stats for the last few gameweeks (less than 4?)

Just wondering haha. I also rate players on stats/ fix and have Kane at the top too but certainly not 8 times higher than Pelle haha

Yeah, only considers last 4 gameweeks to try and capture most recent form. Takes into account player attacking stats VS opponent's defensive stats - still in its early stages though. 🙂

He's probably not 8 times better(Flaw#1) but I mean it shows he's far better option according to the model. Think this is mainly due to Pelle's horrible Shot on Target %, which is something the model values quite highly. Kane's got a really high SoT%.

Interesting. Even ignoring shots on target (which I think can vary a lot over weeks), he is also looking good when you consider shots in the box highly. So yeah Kane really looks like a great pick this week. Guess I might do Pelle to Kane after all.

I could afford all of them. Getting Eriksen only leaves the exact amount in the bank to do Pelle to aguero and I have been burnt by Eriksen before. I don't want to double up on saints but may look at tadic/mane once I transfer out Pelle.
Coutinho could be worth a shout though. Thanks.

Nailed 4.6m striker classified as a mid - I am all over that 🙂

“I think Joshua gives us that pace up front which Callum had. "

“It is no secret we are still searching for a balance that suits our players. I hope I am not still saying that in two or three months’ time because we are aware we have to find the solutions quite quickly, meaning we can defend games well and look solid while still carrying a credible goal threat.

“We are working towards that in training and, certainly, when individuals get their chance, I hope they take them. We are waiting for people to really nail down certain positions and that is down to the individuals to grab that chance with both hands.”

Asked whether he felt King, whose £1million fee was determined by a tribunal, had done that recently, Howe said: “I do. He has impacted how we hoped he would, worked hard, run the channels and made himself a nuisance to centre-halves.

    Hi guys

I've been a bit impatient about the Christmas break because like many of you, it will make or break my fantasy season. So, due to that impatience (and a horrible jetlag which means I'm UP AT 3.30 AM with nothing to do), I've put an early view for the GW 17 -20 fixtures.

Would be great to get your thoughts if you've already started planning for December, and perhaps get a discussion going.

    Here it is:

    Clean sheet best bets:

West Brom (BOU, swa, NEW, STO)
    Chelsea (SUN, WAT, mun, cry)
    Villa (new, WHM, nor, sun)

    Front 8 candidates from:

    Arsenal (MCI, sot, BOU, NEW)
    Liverpool (wat, LEI, sun, whm)
Manchester City (ars, SUN, lei, wat)

    Mixed bag:

Manchester United (NOR, sto, CHE, SWA)
    Everton (LEI, new, STO, TOT)
    Southampton (TOT, ARS, whm, nor)

    Avoid like the plague:

    Leicester (eve, liv, MCI, BOU)
    Bournemouth (wba, CRY, ars, lei)
    Sunderland (che, mci, LIV, AVL)

    Cheers

I would say stay away from chelsea and villa and monitor situation on liverpool and united attacking assets.

For me this season has clearly shown its Form over Fixtures which means the planning for the Christmas break has to be delayed unfortunately. You might see the likes of Leicester grabbing 3 wins from those games out of no where.

Regarding clean sheets I currently own Richards since beginning of the season and still haven't managed to get rid. Your bet on villa clean sheets is very very optimistic. I know you gonna tell me they kept a cs vs city but miracles do happen !

I'd go for West Brom defender 100% over Chelsea. That's a given for me.

      Front 8 -
Arsenal rotation of giroud/theo directs you towars sanchez/ozil combo (pricey but worth every penny imo)
Add Aguero in the mix with maybe coutinho if the budget allows it and you're more than well armed to face the festivities !

      Mixed bags -
UTD = so tough to predict because of their rotation and whether or not LVG plays martial centrally or on the wing. You have mata as well as a strong candidate but better options out there imo.
Everton = By then we'll know more abt lukaku's form who is a strong candidate. Deulofeu looks like he's really gonna light it up this season. I'd pick him over Barkley in a heart beat.
Southampton= Currently own Pelle who never shows up away from home. With that run of fixtures i'd stay away from all Soton options (Pelle Mane Tadic).

Hope this helps ? You agree with me ?

        Hi FG,

Leicester coming away with points is a possibility, I'm just assuming that this early run will fade away and they will go back to mid table. Having said that I have a 1:20 bet on them making it to top 4! 🙂 villa is a punt no doubt about it and I believe Chelsea will turn around their season, hence clean sheet lick. United is a wait and see and I'd probably take a punt on SOT, had 3 of their players all season and I'm not going to stop anytime soon... Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I'm 0.4 short of getting Aguero in for free next week so
Next GW I was going to take a hit to do Wijnaldum + Pelle > Deulofeu + Aguero.

But with Deulofeu's form I'm thinking about taking the -4 this week then getting Aguero in for free next week.
So is it worth Wijnaldum > Deulofeu for -4?

    Just wanted to ask...

I've been very busy these last few weeks so haven't had much time to write articles on here.

I planned to do one (or two) on Payet replacements, but I have a lot on my plate and feel the time may be better used elsewhere.

Has everyone decided on their replacement yet, or would an article help?

If the consensus is that it would, then I'll go ahead and do it. If not, then there is no point really.

Most going Ozil (if high budget)
      Delf/Bolasie (mid price bracket)
      Alli/King/Lanzini (low price)

All connected to the Kun plan.

I just read the Bournemouth fans forum. I know... quiet day at work.

Most of the fans don't rate King and there is even a multi page thread with the title "Is King the worst player to ever play for Bournemouth" or something similar. However, in the newcastle match thread, a minority of fans were starting to support him.

They are in love with Stanislas. Many picked him as MOTM last week and also said subbing him off was suicide. The stats back up that Stanislas was the most productive player on the pitch too.

Of course Eddie Howe is the guy who counts, not the fans, but I might as well pass on the info

The thing is King is JUST 23 years , and it is unfair to say that he is the worst player when he is so young , obviously he has improved this season

Also Stanislas is very wasteful and although his stats were good , his successful %s were low

Everytime i see someone mention King i laugh.. Really is one of the worse players i've seen in previous years and i dont see him suddenly turning into a great player 😆 .. That being said he has improved a bit this season so good on him. I can see this lasting for a week or two before he has one bad game and turns into a sub again. Stanislas is a classy player.. would not be surprised if he goes on a good run. Murray is a good player and the Palace fans i know miss him.. he'll start again soon enough

And btw Murray was dropped cause he reached late for training and Howe hates that sorta thing.. there was a rumour of a minor dustup going around but it seems to have disappeared. Would not be surprised in the least to see Murray start this week and convert all those chances

Yes.. because he reached late for training the previous day... He was dropped cause Howe was p!ssed. Minor dustup too.. if you want King then by all means get him. Be advised though.. it's gonna be a very brief honeymoon period before it all goes bad again. I love Bournemouth but i would not touch em with a bargepole at the moment

That would be the thing holding me back from considering King as 5th mid. What is going on with Murray? He MUST be having a fight with the coaching staff because there's no way in hell he doesn't warrant a place at least on the bench especially with the injuries Bournemouth have.

Stanislas is very interesting at 4.2 and with attacking threat but you'd want to see him play at least a couple more games before getting him in. If that does happen though there's a chance I might even downgrade Westwood to him if I need the .2

Hmmmm. Eddie knows we need pace, and King has that. If we're playing one up front then I would guess it is more likely to be King than Murray, given the debacle of the first half against our friends down the road. Murray isn't mobile enough to be a lone striker.. And if it's two up front then King is also likely to play. King and Stanislas have played together as attacking players the last game and a half, and have looked good. This has surprised many fans, but EH seems to be keen on King. It's by no way a certainty, but I'd guess King will nail down a place in the side, if only because of his pace and the lack of alternatives. Tomlin has looked good when he has played, but a front two of him and Murray really lacks pace so I can't see it being our regular tactic. Rantie and Kermorgant have done nothing to convince they can play at this level, and Atsu seems to have disappeared down the back of the sofa. So until the transfer window I'd guess King will play a lot.

    A) Bony -> Giroud

    C) KDB & Bony -> Ozil & Kane

    Bank 0.5m, 2FT

    DDG
    Bellerin, VVD, Kolarov
    Sanchez, KDB, Mane, Mahrez
    Lukaku, Pelle, Bony

    Hennessey, Simpson, Moreno, Surman

    A) appears to be a pretty good differential (8%) who is on form and has good fixtures, and saving a freebie makes getting Aguero next week much easier, but B) and C) are probably the better medium/long term moves.

Keeps drifting into attacking positions all game no matter what position(supposedly deeper in the pivot) he starts in. Would probably get him in @6.5+ having watched him the past few weeks.. @4.9 he just oozes value and cant even be considered a punt at that price 🙂

Him and Dembele are sort of alternating between the 8 and the 10 at the moment. Which suits those two very well. If Bentaleb/Mason start getting a game it might be even more favourable to Alli actually, assuming he's not the one to miss out

Bentaleb is a threat to Dier since both of em are holding mids.. Mason is a threat to Alli but Alli owns the position and if anything may be pushed forward to accomodate Mason. Expect him to play every game except for the usual rest that happens around Christmas with every other player.. though his 5th yellow could do that for him anyway 🙂
4.9 is brilliant value for someone with his potential. to each his own though

He's terrific in real life and as a Spurs fan I'm really excited by him.

However in FPL I think he's a poor option. Risk of rotation and he's in that price bracket where he's too expensive for 5th mid but doesn't have the quality to play every week as 4th mid. I'm sure in the long term you'd be happier with an extra .6 to spend on a starter and getting a solid 2 points from Surman.

Surely he aint a rotation risk mate 😯 .. Though please tell me why he could be one(i'm not a Spurs fan though i try to keep myself updated) .. And he plays so far forward everytime i watch em... why is he a poor option? again.. i'm asking out of curiosity to save myself from the mistake of getting him in this week. Everything i've checked looks good so far and i'd like a counter argument towards it 🙂
