FIFFSA 5-a-side World Cup – Qualifying Week 2

The first week of qualifying inthe inaugeral FIFFSA 5-a-side World Cup got off to a flyer with several results of note. Egypt, one of the least experienced teams, came through the first week with flying colours, posting the fifth highest score of any team (333) and they are now sitting pretty at the top of the CAF qualifying group. This sets up a tantalising clash with The Seychelles.

The highest team score of the week award goes to Costa Rica with 351. They needed it too as their opponents Malaysia posted a very respectable 321. This would have been enough to have beaten most sides last week.

The average score for teams last week was 304.8. If your team scored more than that that you can consider yourselves unlucky if you lost – or extremely lucky if you squeezed out a win with a score lower than that.

Player of the week goes to Cylus11 of Croatia who posted a mammoth 92 points, as he led them to a 79-point victory over France

The award for worst substitution must go to Uruguay who benched Chenku who scored a massive 78 points after hits. This cost Uruguay the win in a tight match-up. This narrowly beat the benching of Jacknap by India as although they benched a greater number of points India still came away with the win.

Off the pitch, Tony Hibbert wins the award for best press conference revealing the Republic of Ireland’s elite pre-season training methods that would set them up for the tournament.

We also had the saga of the missing England players gone AWOL. If you are reading this and you belong to team England please make yourself known.

In fact the sheer quantity and quality of the pressers is too high to bring up here. But keep it up it is an invaluable part of the tournament and keeps it alive.

A full run-down of last week’s results can be found here:

Gameweek 2 Preview

We are looking forward to the second week of qualifying taking place this weekend, which includes a big South American match-up between Brazil and Argentina. Both sides which have tallied over 145,000 points between them in their Fantasy Premier League careers so it should live up to its billing.

Another big local derby is Germany against Poland, who will be desperate to get off the mark after losing their Gameweek 1 match against Portugal. Germany in contrast will be in confident mood after despatching Bosnia and Herzegovina.

A full list of the fixtures this week can be found here:

Fixtures FIFFSA

A more detailed summary of this can be found on the player history tab which includes the rank history of every player in the tournament and our team sheets and tables spreadsheet.

Further Information

A quick reminder of the format. Each Gameweek teams will pick a team of five players to go head to head with their opposite nation. The match will then be decided by the aggregate score of each team’s Gameweek scores after hits have been accounted for. This week’s games can be found here.

Captains are required to submit their team sheets to fiffsa.exec@gmail.com by 2300 (GMT) by the Friday of each Gameweek otherwise their sixth player will be automatically benched.

Live scorecards will be up shortly before the early kick-off on Saturday at our score centre spreadsheet.

If you have any further queries, feel free to ask below in the comments or email us at: fiffsa.exec@gmail.com

    UPDATED Weekly average scores

    Federation ---- GW14 avg ---- GW13 avg

    COMNEBOL ---- 336 ---- 307
    CONCACAF ---- 327 ---- 307
    AFC/OFC A ---- 309 ---- 300
    AFC/OFC B ---- 324 ---- 297
    UEFA A ------ 272 ---- 306
    UEFA B ------ 313 ---- 317
    UEFA C ------ 307 ---- 296
    CAF ----------- 330 ---- 304

    Overall Avg --- 319 ---- 304

After the full update all the Federations look a lot closer to each other.
    Top scorers
    GW13 - Costa Rica
GW14 - Cayman Islands (despite their 2nd highest player being benched)

Its not surprise that these two teams are the overall top scorers as well. CONCACAF and COMNEBOL are full of quality and are competitive. But the proven quality of the other federations cannot be written off just yet. Can't wait for GW15

    Go Cayman!!

Congrats to team Australia! Well done folks you just grabbed the win. I really didn't help my team by playing the worst wildcard in history. Sorry team New Caledonia, I effectively cost us the tie!

    When the game is dawning
    On a Thailand early morning,
How I long to be there
    seeing them lose again there
    Every losing game
    Where they stand in shame,
    Ain't as half as pretty
As getting to say their name

do you play for san marino
lookin like you drunk too much vino
    zero points for san marino
    holding up uefa group c
    zero points for san marino
they are weepin like a willow
    crying over san marino
    holding up uefa group c

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
    And Marino is losing again

    There's a whistle blowing,
Hear the sound that they are knowing
    For the poor marino
And the ref who's who signals defeato
    Just beyond the touchline
    Lies the press room door
    And it keeps me going
hearing they have lost once more

do you play for san marino
lookin like you drunk too much vino
    zero points for san marino
    holding up uefa group c
    zero points for san marino
they are weepin like a willow
    crying over san marino
    holding up uefa group c

Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
Sha la la la la la la la
    And Marino is losing again

If you can get Peter Kay to cover this I'd be even more impressed.

But one more game and we may have to adopt this song - a few words changed here and there - as our new anthem. Unless we can come up with a more rousing one to lift our spirits. I have in mind "Marino!!!" to the tune of Debbie Harry's "Maria".

it's all part of the plan, now we are underdogs again things will turn around. I think someone mixed up the odds and made us favourites by mistake, has anyone actually seen San Marino play?

    sweet spots of compromise
i told jonty, put me in the podcast if i lead singapore into the top 32 of the ffs world cup, he mentions only the finals, i suggest top 8-> likewise while's there's chips-can we compromise to consider only the wild card and the all out attack? bench boost and triple captain could be banned from this competition
on dullard vs maverick, guess this comp is abt the right portfolio-the balance!

Can the admin shed some light on this?

Does any of the following affect the scores in FIFFSA:

    A. Bench boost (points from extra 4 players),
    B. Triple cap (extra portion from the captain)?

AOA isn't really important because there will still be points registered from the default 11 players.

          I disagree.

I think the chips add an extra dimension of planning to the tournament.

In reality, most will still save their chips for the DGWs so won't make too much of a difference at this stage.

extra dimension = theoretically a team in the final could play 5 BBs and make the whole thing pointless

But so would playing the Wildcard. You really cannot discount the effect of any chip. Neither can you ban pple from using these chips. Teams which strategised well would've chosen players who are willing to use chips, if needed, for the benefit of the team. Those countries who formed superstar pacs of players who are also quite concerned about their individual OR will have to re-think their strategies

So we've reached the third successive deadline day and we still don't have our squad sorted, so still can't fairly choose who to have as our sub? Why is this taking so long? We've had a guy not contact us for FOUR WEEKS now yet we still haven't been given the all-clear to replace him?

Can the organisers not see that we're being massively handicapped by not even knowing our squad of players to choose from?
