Scout Scribbles – City Triumph in Kiev

Sergio Aguero is amongst the goals as Man City establish a two-goal lead in Kiev. Harry Kane is expected to be fit in time for Tottenham’s home clash with Swansea, the defensive injuries start to ease for United, whilst West Ham receive positive news at both ends of the pitch ahead of their home clash with Sunderland.

City grab first leg advantage

Manchester City rolled out the big guns as they ran out 3-1 victors over Dynamo Kiev in the away leg of their Champions League tie. Sergio Aguero, David Silva and Yaya Toure inflicted the damage, while Fernandinho, Raheem Sterling and Toure were awarded assists.

The Scout Says: In response to Man City’s upcoming blank, Sergio Aguero currently sits third in terms of “transfers out” (69,000) this week. Considering that the Sky Blues lock horns with Liverpool’s leaky defence in Gameweek 28 and then enjoy two mouth-watering fixtures (AVL, nor), though, the majority of Aguero’s 30% ownership will take solace from last night’s strike and be happy to hold for now. Silva’s excellent display at the number-ten berth against the Ukrainian outfit might persuade Pellegrini to adopt a similar strategy in the league, given that the former Valencia recruit has flattered to deceive on the wings of late. On that note, Kevin De Bruyne’s absence has starved us of a viable route into Man City’s midfield, with Toure, Silva and Sterling tallying just one goal and an assist between them over the last six Gameweeks. Given that Pellegrini’s troops still have a double to follow and travel to Norwich in Gameweek 30, at a time where at least eight teams will face blanks, we’ll be keeping a keen eye on their form men once this weekend’s blank is out of the way.

Kane expected to be fit for weekend

Mauricio Pochettino revealed that Harry Kane and Mousa Dembele will be sidelined for Tottenham Hotspur’s second leg against Fiorentina this evening. The Argentine boss expects the former to be available for selection by the weekend but admits that the latter faces up to two weeks in the treatment room:

“We expect Mousa to be [out for] longer than Harry – 10 days to two weeks. It’s not a big issue but similar to before. It’s small but we have a lot of games ahead so it’s come at a very bad moment. Harry Kane will be available for Sunday – we expect and we hope he’s available. Today he wasn’t here because he saw the specialist about his nose. On medical advice, it’s impossible for Harry to play tomorrow. In the last few minutes against Crystal Palace he played with a broken nose. Today we need to fix the problem – it’s impossible for him to play tomorrow but he’s available for Sunday.”

In more positive news on the injury front, Erik Lamela (illness) and Hugo Lloris returned to training on Wednesday after recovering from their respective complaints.

The Scout Says: Judging from Dembele’s projected return date, he looks certain to miss Spurs’ next two league ties (SWA, whu) and is a major doubt for the North London derby on March 5. Tom Carroll is also still contending with an Achilles injury, so at least in the short term, it may well be that Dele Alli – instead of Ryan Mason or Nabil Bentaleb – will partner Eric Dier in the double pivot. Considering that he’s mustered just two goals and as many assists in 10 outings as a deep-lying central midfielder, Alli’s 31% ownership will be wary of such an occurrence. Ultimately, Alli’s deployment behind the attacking quartet would augment Christian Eriksen’s appeal as a source of Spurs offensive coverage. Despite being overshadowed by his more affordable counterpart, the 8.6-priced Denmark international boasts three goals and a trio of assists in five starts, and has amassed the joint-most shots on target (six) among midfielders across the previous four Gameweeks. Moreover, the doubts surrounding Kane’s fitness and Alli’s positioning might convince more Fantasy mangers to slap the captain’s armband on Jamie Vardy or Riyad Mahrez for Leicester City’s home tie against Norwich City – the former notched four goals in as many starts, but the latter has chalked up seven more double-figure hauls (10 compared to three) and is the far more explosive option.

Klopp reluctant to tinker

Jurgen Klopp confirmed that Dejan Lovren will sit out Liverpool’s Europa League clash against FC Augsburg because of illness. Meanwhile, Joe Allen and Adam Lallana are closing in on a return to full fitness, but Martin Skrtel is still nursing a hamstring injury.

Quizzed as to whether he intends to rest players ahead of the Capital One Cup final on Sunday, Klopp asserted that rotation is out of the question:

“If you think about the second step before you make the first step, you will always fall down. So there’s no other chance. We have to be fully concentrated and give everything for this game. If we think, for example, to leave this player out then for sure he will be injured in a training session. So it’s not allowed. We have to be fully concentrated on this game and then go to the next one. That’s how we select the team. The only other thing we have to think about is who is available?”

The Scout Says: One would imagine that the Merseysiders will once again line up in a 4-2-3-1 formation at home to Augsburg, then, with Roberto Firmino operating behind lone striker Daniel Sturridge. Given that Firmino failed to register a single attempt in a deeper-lying role in the 6-0 win against Villa and faces two blanks across the next four Gameweeks, it’s little surprise that he’s the fourth-most transferred-out (49,000) midfielder this week. With a couple of double Gameweeks still to be factored in somewhere along the line, the Reds’ display against City at Wembley this Sunday affords us the chance of some early scouting, with the fit-again Philippe Coutinho and Daniel Sturridge back on our radars for the run-in.

Rojo back in United squad

Speaking ahead of Manchester United’s Europa League encounter with FC Midtjylland, Louis van Gaal said that David De Gea will not recover in time to make the matchday squad. Conversely, Marcos Rojo will be named among the substitutes but is not fit to start. Elsewhere, Antonio Valencia is also stepping up his rehabilitation from a foot problem:

“I was hoping for that [De Gea’s return] but he shall not be involved, that is already certain. Valencia didn’t train with our first squad, only individually as part of his own programme. Rojo has only trained with the second team yesterday and today with the first squad so he’s on the bench but is only good for 20 minutes or something like that.”

The Scout Says: Although Cameron Borthwick-Jackson – whose spell as a budget prospect looks to have ended – shook off the knock he sustained in the FA Cup, Rojo’s return offers a boost to the Red Devils’ depleted defence before a visit from Arsenal. The Argentina international will struggle to make the starting XI for that clash, but the fact that Man United conceded just three goals in the six matches he’s started this term bodes well for Rojo’s eventual reinstatement. The Red Devils’ blank in Gameweek 30 negates his short-term appeal, but the 5.0-priced defender will certainly factor into our thinking when their two doubles come around. As for Valencia (5.1), he could yet emerge as the prime route into Man United’s defence if he can nail down the right-back berth in the final quarter of the campaign.

Injuries ease for Hammers

According to West Ham United’s head of medical science, Stijn Vandenbroucke, Winston Reid and Andy Carroll are back in full training and could play a part against Sunderland on Saturday. Enner Valencia, however, will undergo further assessments to determine his availability:

“Diafra Sakho, Winston Reid and Andy Carroll are all back in training and will now spend the next few days building up their fitness. Diafra has obviously been out for three months and will need a bit more time, while Andy and Winston will hope to play some part in the games that we have got coming up next week. Enner Valencia has seen a specialist and is doing individual training at the moment. We will know in the next few days if he has a part to play in the three games that we face next week.”

The Scout Says: In the wake of Emmanuel Emenike’s brace against Blackburn Rovers, Slaven Bilic has a potential selection headache on his hands this Gameweek. Irrespective of who is chosen to spearhead the Hammers’ offense, the lack of a standout candidate should promote a fair amount of rotation between forwards, forcing us to source attacking coverage from their midfield. Dimitri Payet’s recent flourish (three goals and two assists in two outings in all competitions) reaffirmed his status as the choice pick, but it’s worth noting that the 4.9-priced Manuel Lanzini places top among the Irons’ midfield contingent for shot frequency (one ever 36.8 minutes) and bagged three goals in five outings earlier in the season. With a blank Gameweek 30 just around the corner and their blank Gameweek 35 also yet to be arranged, though, few will be willing to load up on the Hammers until the fixtures are rescheduled.

    Butland - Myhill
    Bellerin - Dier - Dawson - Francis - Targett
    Sanchez - Silva - Firmino - Payet - Alli
    Aguero - Vardy - Ighalo

    2FTs, £2.5m ITB

I can survive this week with Aguero, Silva and Firmino benched playing 5-3-2, but Firmino is on my hitlist to get out anyway due to 2x blanks.

    A) Firmino > Eriksen/Siggy and keep the spare FT floating in case of DGW news
    B) Firmino + Ighalo > Eriksen/Siggy + Afobe
    C) Firmino + Dawson > Eriksen + Fuchs/VvD

    Dembele Absence Revisited

Previously I took a look at the impact of Dembele on Kane’s points. What emerged was that when Dembele plays Kane is further forward and shoots more. When he was absent Kane dropped deeper, which curtailed his and Spurs attacking returns.

Given Dembele is out again this Gameweek I though I’d look to see how his absence may affect not only Kane’s points, but also the prospects of points from Alli and Eriksen.

The results prove grim reading for those hoping to get strong returns from their Spurs players.

Points per game in the four recent Gameweeks where Dembele was either absent or had reduced minutes on the pitch (GWKs 16, 19, 20, 21)

    Eriksen 2.75
    Alli 3.25
    Kane 3.25

Also defensively there’s an affect. There were no clean sheets over this period.

Now look how those performances compare with the most recent games where Dembele played significant minutes (GWKs 22- 26)

    Eriksen 9.2 ppg
    Alli 6.2 ppg
    Kane 9.2 ppg

This shows that for Eriksen and Kane in particular their points potential is seriously undermined when Dembele is out.

Worth noting there were two clean sheets over this period.

Indeed. I was looking into whether I should triple up on Spurs or go for Sigurdsson. Actually think Sigurdsson could get something from this game now.

Yeah Sigurdsson looks a better choice now.
Swansea have tightened up recently as well so i'm not too hopeful about Sunday, will still play all 3 though.

I'm hoping this is proved right in GWK 27. Given Aguero and Lukaku's absence Kane could be a popular captain choice.

In the Dembele less fixtures it also included a home game to Newcastle - that they lost, as well as away to Watford and a draw with Everton - who are very leaky currently. They also lost to Leicester.

The range of fixture difficulty is comparable. Losing at home to Newcastle is pretty damning.

Are you looking at away or cup games?

Last four Spurs home games to Newcastle in the Premier Lg are

                  1-2
                  0-1
                  2-1
                  5-0

that's 8 goals to four to Spurs over the four seasons.

Yeah I remember the Newcastle loss especially- Spurs didn't look like their usual cohesive unite at all. I do think Dembele is a really important player for them, but like Brown Cow says below, they have some higher quality replacements ready to fill his boots. Will definitely be interesting to see how this theory plays out, especially as I'm still considering triple Spurs 😮

Newcastle beat Liverpool 3-0 the week before. I'm not disagreeing with the Dembele effect as I don't watch Spurs enough to know but IMO the fixtures in these two sequences play a much bigger role than you suggest.

Of course. All comparisons like this come with a caveat....but its interesting that when this research was carried out previously over other games the same conclusion emerged - when Dembele is absent Spurs are a worse team - they leak more goals and their attackers don't gel.

As with all stats people can take them how they want. I take this to suggest that tripling up on Spurs - also given their fixture congestion currently - is not a great move. I also think it suggests that Swansea may get something from this game.

Not disputing that at all. Just don't find it very useful to do this on such a small sample size without accounting for fixtures and underlying stats.

Regardless , such a drastic change indicates that Dembele has a big impact on Spurs 🙂

Now you're a member you can have a check on the underlying stats of Kane, Eriksen and Alli over those games.

Always welcome further research on these things. I'm rather basically looking at points scored - but there is a whole range of added data to unearth regarding chances created and shots on target over these two periods.

I think these differences are just too big to be a fair representation of Dembele's influence on Tottenham's other attacking assets. He missed quite a few matches over the last couple of seasons as well. Does anyone have statistics on goals scored %-win etc with/without Dembele for those seasons?

I expect a low scoring game but not because of this so-called Dembele effect. More because Swansea are solid and Spurs are playing Europa on Thursday. That's not to say the Dembele effect doesn't exist or anything but I think that it's not as simple as that and the sample size is far too small.

I think four gwks is a good sample size. Its a proven guide when looking at team form and other stats. One or two I'd say maybe wait and see but if the same pattern emerges four times it gives a good indication.

As a Kane and Alli owner part of me really hopes this trend is wrong though. 🙂

4 GW stats are good indicators for underlying data imho....also here we are quantifying an intangible. Maybe its the replacement player who is bad , rather than Dembele being very good?

I think it does depend slightly on who replaces him.

With lamela, son, chadli and mason now fit, it could be we have a higher quality replacment than carroll (no offence to tom who is a good young player).

My suspicion is either bentaleb or mason will play, but alli could drop deep and a more attacking player come in.

The gameweeks you mentioned Dembele being out were NEW wat eve LEI.
The gameweeks you mentioned Dembele being fit were SUN cpl nor WAT mci.

Apart from NEW and mci, which could be anomalies, there is a quite a difference in fixture difficulty there.

Of course results and therefore PPG is going to suffer when a key player such as Dembele is out, but to attribute it to him is not the entire story with a closer look at the fixtures.

Spurs next 5 - SWA whm ARS avl BOU. With Dembele expected to be back for avl in gw30 the next 3 fixtures don't look overly appealing all of a sudden.

easily one of the best mids in the league this season so i'm not surprised if things point to the side being worse off without him. seems to have pushed on from a player who was nearly possible to dispossess to one who can now string everything together. strong as an ox too, whether it's sidestepping away from a player on into one to get the ball off them he just eats them up

But look what happened in GW5-8.

In GW5 & 6, Spurs achieved clean sheets against Sunderland and Palace without Dembele, with an Eriksen assist against Palace.
In GW7, Spurs beat Man City 4-1 without Dembele, with goals from Alderweireld, Dier and Kane, plus an assist from Eriksen.
In GW8, Spurs drew 2-2 at Swansea with only 10 minutes from Dembele, but Eriksen scored both goals (15 points), whilst Alli provided both assists (9 points).

        good research.

This could indicate that Eriksen could still do well without Dembele. But there were some difference to Spurs then and Spurs now. Chadli was a key man back then...that may have affected things. Also Alli was for the most part used in a much deeper role alongside Dier. Son was used as well alot over that period. Also Lamela had a greater influence over games.

Kane was certainly not a great scorer over that period. One goal only...plus an own goal so that's a gain of 2pts.

The theory still stands up as far as Kane is concerned.

Jury out as to whether Eriksen can do well. Be interested to see how the theory pans out over the next two...but in recent gwks the stats suggest that Eriksen has not prospered with Dembele's absence.

Thanks for going back to this and pointing this out Jonty. For a while, as a Spurs fan, I have felt that Dembele is our most influential player - this is of course from a non-FPL point of view. It's good to see that people can see how important a player he is.

With regards to the effect on the Kane/Alli dynamic, though - Kane has been playing a bit deeper regardless now - even when Dembele is playing in the team. This is because Dembele has been moved back into the pivot with Alli playing in the number 10 position. It was when Dembele was in the number 10 position in parts of the season when Kane was playing like a traditional no. 9 - constantly in the area like Aguero does. So now - I don't think it will have the same effect on Kane's positioning. If anything it might be most detrimental to Alli if anyone, as he may be dropped into the pivot to cover Dembele's absence. As a Spurs fan, at least, I hope this is what happens.

All in all though, yes, Dembele's absence will have an impact on our play on both ends of the pitch - he roams in the middle of the park like a lion.

Could Mason instead of Alli perhaps replace Dembele in the double pivot? What effect would that have?

What position was Alli playing in GW8 when he got his two assists?

And Spurs did manage to keep clean sheets in GW5 & 6 when Dembele wasn't playing - or was that just because it was only against Sunderland and Palace?

I'm not saying we're completely useless without and a one-man team. Naturally though him missing will have an impact. The greatest individual impact is likely to be on Alli IF (and that's a big if) Poch plays him in the pivot. Otherwise, Alli was looking just as lively last night playing in the 3 behind the striker. He was arguably a greater threat than Chadli who looked to be playing up-front

Think Mason will be alongside Dier in the pivot. Alli doesn't have enough discipline to play that deeper role, the yellowed early in the season are testament to that.

I thought that Spurs looked very good last night with Mason in the double pivot, so I am hoping that will continue till Dembele returns.

Bringing in a Stoke player this week seems a very good idea.

"I don't see the commitment from all the players every day in training sessions," said Aston Villa manager Remi Garde. "If I had the choice of other players I would like to select I would like to, but I don't have the possibility. I have to find the right training session and words to make them committed every day."

Garde admitted that if the January transfer window had gone his way, he would have had greater competition among the players in a small squad.

Think I'll go with a nice 2 week punt on Arnie and see how he does. Best case he gets me loads of points, intermediate case he does ok and he can stick around for when others have blanks, worst case he does bob all and I use my spare pre-GW30 transfer to ship him for sterling or someone.

Is my team too over planned?

My team for this week after doing Lukaku>Vardy is:
    Butland
    VVD Wollscheid Alderwiereld Daniels
    Mahrez Sanchez Payet Alli
    Vardy Kane
    (McCarthy, Aguero, Barkley, Simpson)

I will be rolling over a FT this week as well and don't want to make a transfer next week as the team is well set up for GW30.

GW29 the plan is to do Sanchez & McCarthy out for Silva & Hart to leave me with:

    Hart
Alderwiereld, Simpson, Wollscheid, VVD, Daniels (one will be benched)
    Mahrez, Alli, Silva
    Kane, Vardy, Kun
    (Butland, Barkley, Payet)

This means that I will effectively lose a transfer in GW28 (assuming no injury or suspension).

With Spurs not missing GW30 like many anticipated I'm left with no currently no thinking required until after gw30 in preparation for the dgws which seems worrying to me.

Am I just being paranoid over nothing, and actually this shows I will finally climb the rankings?

If you are going to miss out on an FT, surely you must be able to find something to do?

Simpson to Fuchs this week? Guessing you don't have the cash for McCarthy to Hart.

You are keen on keeping Daniels?

      1. pilgrim
        • 14 Years

Not the money to bring in Hart until I do Sanchez>Silva, and wouldnt have the money to do that move if I got rid of Simpson either.

Yeh, keeping Daniels until GW31, then will prob bring in Moreno.

No. You'll be in even more trouble later when everyone is able to plan for the two DGW's. You can't do that this early. Only needs a hit to get 11 out. That's not worth more than a wildcard

Take a -8 if need be. Evans, Souare and Abdi to Huth, Mahrez and Fonte or something like that

I was actually thinking of doing one of Evans/Souare to one of Fuchs/Wollschied along with Abdi to Mahrez and rolling out the all out attack with a 4 point hit

Evans and Moreno to Wolschied and Fuchs

I wouldn't really want to wc this gw. Maybe just try to survive the week by making 2 changes. Soaure & Moreno out maybe for VVD & Fuchs?

I'd just do a -4 and change 2 defenders in order to get 11 out.

      Save WC.

Do to defender transfers for a hit and you'll be fine

Isn't Abdi playing this week?? I like the look of what KoL said 'Evans and Moreno to Wolschied and Fuchs' then captain Vardy

The standard FPL iPhone app, which many less committed players will have, has just popped up a notification that EVE, LIV, MCI and NEW have no fixture this week.

      Stop spoon-feeding people!!! Honestly... 😐

But still it will be too late for a lot of people.

A guy in my ml has 7! players, who won't play today. Injuries, blanks, suspensions. Hoping he will use his WC to save his week 🙂

Haha yeah a guy in my ML has 6! If he takes a hit he can still field 10 players though I think but he's always terrible in the second half of the season

Would you play Azpi (sot) or Bellerin (mun).

Leaning toward Azpi as So'ton haven't been scoring many recently if you look at the last 4 GWs, but goals scored in the last 4 home fixtures looks a lot different...

Cheers, didn't expect that at all!

Norwich do have goals in them, which is why I am playing Butland over Schmeichel. Guess I'll reassess after seeing how Utd get on tonight. Another attacking injury and it''ll start looking like a nailed-on CS for Arsenal 🙁

Could do... Watford do get goals at home. Just seems a big risk given his potential for attacking-returns.

What sort of a lead is surmountable at this stage of the season in your opinion? Trailing my ML rival by around a 100 points and beginning to get itchy

        Still time.

The DGWs and blanks can be utilized a lot. And just a good captain pick instead of a bad can give you 15 points alone.

Don't panic yet, but slowly start to plan to differentiate your team from the leading team .

Not sure how many points the bench boost and triple (c) could be worth . It depends on how good the player is but I think 100 points might be too much

I caught up on the ML leader by 31 points this week which cut the gap to 39, very possible for me to catch but it also makes me think that a gap of 150ish is probably still catchable DGW and correct bench/captain choices will be hugely beneficial for a catch up
