Michail Antonio grabs the only goal of the match as West Ham see off Spurs at Upton Park. Roberto Firmino racks up the points as Liverpool sweep aside City, Juan Mata notches United’s late winner over Watford, whilst Ashley Williams guides Swansea to victory at the Emirates.

Injury concerns for beaten Gunners

Arsenal lost ground in the title race following a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Swansea City. Despite mustering the second-most attempts (18) of any team in Gameweek 28, the Gunners converted their territorial dominance into just four accurate attempts.

Arsene Wenger named three changes for the Swans visit, with Theo Walcott, Danny Welbeck and Laurent Koscielny dropping out for Joel Campbell, Olivier Giroud and Per Mertesacker. Koscielny missed out with a calf injury that’s set to sideline him for the North London derby on Saturday, while the 37%-owned Petr Cech sustained a similar complaint and will join the Frenchman in the stands at White Hart Lane.

With regards to Arsenal’s Fantasy output, Alexis Sanchez supplied the assist for Campbell’s opener – his first attacking returns in seven starts. The Chilean is now without a goal in 11 outings yet mustered four more shots inside the box (12) than any midfielder across the previous four Gameweeks, offering hope to his restless 13% ownership.

Williams wins it for Swans

Swansea moved six points clear of the relegation berths by virtue of their first win in five matches. In the absence of Francesco Guidolin – who was admitted to hospital with a chest infection – the Welsh outfit rested six players, with the likes of Gylfi Sigurdsson and Alberto Paloschi gracing the bench.

Sigurdsson was introduced at the break and went on to card his second assist of the campaign. Looking at Swansea’s schedule for the next four Gameweeks (NOR, bou, AVL, sto), they embark on two mouth-watering home clashes and a promising trip to Bournemouth, encouraging investment in the Iceland international.

Wayne Routledge drew the visitors level (Jack Cork assist) in the 32nd minute, before Ashley Williams illustrated his attacking potential with his second goal in seven starts. Averaging 0.6 more points per game than any of his defensive team-mates, Williams – who places joint-top among all defenders for bonus points (17) – remains the choice route into Swansea’s rearguard ahead of their agreeable run.

Shaqiri strike sees off Magpies

Xherdan Shaqiri steered Stoke City to their third consecutive win with a late strike in a tightly contested affair. The 6.4-priced midfielder has produced attacking returns (one goal, two assists) in three out of four starts since returning from injury, elevating his stature in the mid-priced bracket.

Given that Mame Biram Diouf earned the assist for Shaqiri’s strike, Marko Arnautovic’s 84,000 new owners were left disappointed with the Austrian’s blank. Nonetheless, he’s certainly capable of punishing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge next time out, considering that the Blues rank joint-fourth for goals conceded in home matches (21).

Speaking in his-post-match press conference, Mark Hughes confirmed that Phil Bardsley is likely to miss the Chelsea encounter with a recurrence of his calf injury, while Geoff Cameron is “very sore” and a concern. Allied with the fact that Ryan Shawcross is not ready to re-join the matchday squad, Jack Butland’s 23% ownership might doubt the Potters’ capacity to register successive clean sheets.

Antonio nets again

In the wake of a 2-1 home victory over Tottenham Hotspur, West Ham United rest just one point off the Champions League spots. The Irons now face a challenging trip to Everton, before Slaven Bilic’s men resume FA Cup duties in Gameweek 30.

In response to Sam Byram’s injury and West Ham’s subsequent lack of senior right-backs, Bilic adopted a 3-4-2-1 set-up for Spurs’ visit, fielding Michail Antonio as a right wing-back. The former Nottingham Forest winger popped up with the match’s solitary goal in the seventh minute, marking the third time he’s scored in five starts. Intriguingly, all five of the 5.3-priced midfielder’s goals have come at the Boleyn Ground, perhaps diminishing his appeal prior to a pair of road ties (eve, blank, che).

Dimitri Payet whipped in the cross for Antonio’s header, satisfying a 27% ownership that might’ve otherwise had their head turned by the latter’s budget price tag. In appreciation of the fact that Payet’s value has risen by 0.6 since Gameweek 22, early uptakers will be more inclined to bench the Irons’ star man for the upcoming blank.

Spurs stumble at Upton Park

Spurs turned out one of their worst performances of the campaign as they spurned a golden opportunity to leapfrog Leicester City at the summit. Mauricio Pochettino made four alterations to the starting XI, with Dele’s Alli’s omission being the most notable talking point. The teenage prodigy would later enter the fray at the 61st minute, having struggled with a minor knock during the week.

Without Mousa Dembele’s supreme ball-retention skills in the centre of the park, Spurs were overrun in midfield and couldn’t fashion a solitary attempt in the opening period. The silky Belgian has a chance of being passed fit for the Arsenal match-up, though, which would serve as a huge boost for Pochettino’s squad.

Reds avenge final loss

Liverpool’s 3-0 win over Manchester City was the perfect antidote to their Capital One Cup disappointment. The Reds’ offense has clicked into gear of late – tallying 16 goals in five outings – which should invite an upsurge of interest beyond their Gameweek 30 blank.

Roberto Firmino reaffirmed his status as the Merseysiders’ premier asset, notching a goal and assist at the number-ten berth. The Brazilian midfielder boasts four goals and as many assists across his past five starts and doesn’t appear to be suffering from his vacation of the lone-striker berth.

Adam Lallana and James Milner also grabbed a goal and assist each. Both men have notched three goals in their previous five starts, underlining their differential potential for Liverpool’s future double Gameweeks.

Jon Flanagan (4.4) was afforded his first start of the season and helped Liverpool to record back-to-back shut-outs, alerting us to his prospects as a budget pick-up. On the flip side, Alberto Moreno no longer enjoys the security of starts, forcing his 4% ownership to cut ties.

City suffer Wembley hangover

Man City are in the midst of a three-match losing streak following an abysmal performance at Anfield. The Sky Blues’ posed minimal threat on the attacking front, racking up the fewest attempts (four) and shots on target (one) of any team this Gameweek.

Although Sergio Aguero could only muster one attempt in Liverpool’s backyard, his 28% ownership will fancy the Argentine marksman’s chances of repaying their faith over the next two Gameweeks, considering that a visit from Aston Villa and a trip to Norwich City are next on the agenda.

Despite the return of their talismanic captain, Vincent Kompany, Man City still surrendered five goals in their last two head-to-heads. As such, Fantasy managers might be more wary of exploring their rearguard options before a seemingly favourable stretch (AVL, nor, MUN, bou, WBA).

Mata leaves it late

Juan Mata’s first goal since Gameweek 12 was enough to send Manchester United level on points with their local rivals. The ex-Chelsea recruit remains on the periphery of our thinking, given his lack of consistent returns.

Marcus Rashford retained his lone-striker berth, while Jesse Lingard was demoted to accommodate a fit-again Anthony Martial on the right flank. Rashford’s paucity of threat up top (zero attempts) prompted Van Gaal to swap him with Martial at the hour mark, casting doubt on the youngster’s forward slot at The Hawthorns this Sunday.

Michael Carrick was rested for the Hornets’ visit, meaning Timothy Fosu-Mensah was tasked with partnering Daley Blind in central defence. Due to the numerous defensive injuries Man United are contending with, David De Gea acts as their safest source of coverage.

Ahahahaha Rupert gave me stick about that. There was no predicting that Deulofeu, our best player, would suddenly stop playing, and Lennon has historically been poor for end product.

Supporting a team doesn't make me infallible, I'm innately pessimistic about anything to do with Everton, but we're so hard to predict. Though I was right after Newcastle that Barkley would disappoint 😉

No I genuinely don't think it's because of poor performance - it's more to do with the fact that teams have looked the same for almost the whole season now, the budget has never needed to be stretched so everyone has been available to afford the Vardies, Ighalos, Mahrezs who have just not stopped performing all season. Usually, you have a breakthrough player like Michu/Siggy maybe but the others you need to swap in and out whereas now they just keep performing all the time so this has led to teams becoming almost identical.

Look at this week coming for example: everyone will have Aguero (c), Vardy, Mahrez, Ozil - effectively playing with 7 man squads (from which even the other players are so heavily owned like Payet and Kane).

That's the same every season. I think there's more choice this season if anything which is why we all have so many bench points each week. Yes Alli is popular, but some have him and Eriksen to be different. Some still have Ighalo -in fact many do, while others ditched Aguero for Costa in recent weeks. There's been a really wide variety of teams.

I don't think the teams this season has been any more or less 'template' than usual. I bet if I took the time I could dig up links from each of the last few years where people complain about how that season was boring due to everyone having the same team!

Sure, but again, that feels familiar to me. There was the season where everyone seemed to have a midfield of Michu, Fellaini, Bale, Walcott, Mata (or whatever it was). Stick a Chelsea defender, the in form strikers and popular cheap filler around it and that lasted about 6 months.

It's probably just me but it just feels like deja vu all over again 😉

As with my comment below though, getting players in/out the template at the right time is what it's all about, as well as bringing in the right short-term picks. For instance Ighalo, many got him in at the perfect time, many got him in at the wrong time. There is probably 50-100 point swing in that decision alone. Template doesn't mean you can't profit out of it.

I have actually loved this season even though it has been (by very very far) my least successful season. I don't think the template issue has been worse than last season and your example here is a really interesting one. Out of the 4 players you mention that everyone has they dished up 1 assist between them this week. A 'differential' team could have really quickly pulled you up out of the mire. This has been a season that has rewarded sticking with the template at times but has also really rewarded some punts (those punts just haven't been consistent enough to become valid bandwagons). I get where you're coming from but I think it's been a great season for the premier league and for FPL. I don't think it's been worse, but I would certainly say it's been different.

I think its the most interesting for years. The chips have given hope to those with a low rank and experience. Plus its presented new challenges with top teams underperforming and the likes of Leicester excelling.

I found last season quite dull. After that fateful GWK 8 I was in the top 5K and never left it but never really got any higher. Just trudged along, afraid to be too different, matching others good players.

This season the challenge of moving up the rankings from a six figure position has been really interesting for me. Also this season has forced me to take risks that my usual dullard temperament hates, so my captaincies for the mid part of the season were more risky. I also got in more differentials and paid more attention to low ownership than high. My rank is my worst - but I think this season has made me a better manager, if that makes sense.

When the triple captaincies and bench boosts are used in dgwks a week after wildcarding for better or worse those weeks will be far from dull.

I agree with this, i started last season with GW1 rank of 947 (or smt like that) and spent entire season fighting to stay in top 1k. While this season climbing trough ranks from 1mil+ rank gave this game a whole new dimension.

I think that this season there was to many things that defied logic, and so a lot of people were frustrated (as was i for large part of season). Leicester fighting for the title, Mahrez playing like Messi, Vardy and Ighalo scoring on Aguerlo level, Alli getting constantly big scores in tough away games, even Lukaku is doing great,Chelsea and United massively underperforming, big names like Hazard and Silva doing nothing etc etc... There are maybe one or two those things happening every season (Michu, Ramsey, Yaya) but never so many things. Also, some logical moves didn't end up good, like Moreno who had amazing stats, at 4,8mil was nailed on Liverpool defender who was playing more an attacker then defender, playing for a great new manager and week after week he wasn't getting any points.

It is actually more interesting in some ways...my ML never was so close. Last year I won it by 200 pts. This year 5 players with a gap of just 40 pts. So anyone can win it. Just noticed I am just 70 pts off 10 k and 28pts off 50k. So still time to catchup...

I'm really enjoying the game, possibly still the novelty as this is only the second season that I have invested my time properly. The slightly more unusual look to the table than would have been predicted pre-season has added to the fun and excitement. Judging when to get off an under-performing player ha been key. I agree it's been dull. More so recently.

I had an atrocious game week and only fell slightly 383 to 401. Everyone has the same core template, just look at the ownership percentages in the top 1k.

      I think things won't improve with the DGW's (unless you've wasted your WC already) as most decent players will get the same GW33-38 team: somethings like;

This will be my second season of playing to the end (coinciding with finding FFS a couple of years ago).

I think I will retire on a high.

True. It is exciting in that respect.

I think 76 points is too much though at this stage..I could catch the current #1 perhaps but the other 399 could too.

If I finish strongly I guess top 50 is probably possible.

It would be useful to know the wildcard, BB, and TC numbers in the top1k.

          Top10k is currently:
          TC played: 45%
          Bb playes: 61%
          WC played: 35%

So if those values are similar for 1k then I guess I could finish top 50.

You're lucky to be in that position, so enjoy it.
Whilst aiming for number one is a great ambition, you are heading for a great deal of disappointment if you can't also enjoy moving towards and hitting lesser targets.
Aim for the top, but top fifty is also something that most of us will never achieve.
Evs and Jinswick did not quite win FPL, but they created great excitement in these parts by coming very close.
Many of us are finding it an interesting challenge this season just trying to get into the top 100k or to get closer to the leaders in our mini-leagues.

But that's just one dull game-week. Not all game-weeks are like that.
You've only been in the top thousand for about 3 game-weeks, so there must be some significant differences between your squad and the ones you have overtaken.
There are always likely to be parts of your squad that are similar to other squads, and parts that are different, but the only pairs of teams that keep identical squads throughout the season are either dead teams or teams run by the same manager.

Yeah, a lot of the fun is trying to deal with the opportunity cost of not being able to afford every expensive player. This season's Hazard, Sanchez and Silva are available for much less so the budget might as well not exist.

I don't think it's been great. Every time i've tried to differentiate myself from all my rivals it's cost me dearly and i've just ended up wasting transfers getting the template players back in. There was a time when 5 or 6 of my players had over 50% ownership, and the only differentials in my leagues were in defense. That's not good for fpl imo, you shouldn't be forced to have 5 or 6 attacking players or risk a red arrow when one that you don't have gets a haul.

The premier league season itself has been great though, I love the shakeup in the top half of the table, even if the quality of football has been a little lower.

i just think it's more difficult (and frustrating) this year.
The big teams aren't producing many high scoring players. There aren't many easy choices from teams like City, Utd, Liverpool & Chelsea. You'd normally expect to get at least a couple of defenders & strikers from those sides who would almost be season keepers.
By the same way that these "big" sides haven't offered many options then template sides have lasted longer as just aren't that many options particularly in midfield & strikers.
seem to have been a lot of low scoring GWs.
Last couple of months have seen the differentials being defenders who can contribute. Since GW8 I've hovered between 125k and 50k. The gap between me and the top 10k seems to be as much as is it is to 400-500k.
Everything now seems to hinge around the DGWs which if the last 2 GWs is anything to go by may not offer too much scope for significant progress unless a lot of people above have used their chips already.

A sizeable portion of my rank gains usually come from good cash management and squad balance. This allows key targets to enter the team with 1FT, rather than hits, and provides enough flexibility to bring in more big hitters. But due to the abundance of cash reserves and lack of hitters this season I've lost one of my strengths. It has been disappointing in that respect.

However, DGW season is approaching, and with it comes drama, plus the opportunity to utilise our skilful planning to edge our competitors. Sprinkle that with the prospect of sextuple captains and boosting of the benches and we have ourselves an exciting run in.

I feel really bad because I was chatting with WR saying that in our position for UFPL we need to chase bigger (c)'s than single goals in MD1. I planned to change from Costa but completely forgot the deadline was 7.30 and not 7.45 (distracted on the phone). I feel like he might think I was conning him.

I really wasn't...I wouldn't do that for a single minute.

Rough: Sam Isaacs had no previous FPL history. He played his Triple Captain chip in GW1 but made no transfers in the first 16 game-weeks. After 13 red arrows he had slipped to 3,118,292nd overall and his TV was only 96.9m.

Smooth: He then played his First Wildcard in GW17 and has made 1 transfer each game-week since then, apart from GW27 when he made 2 transfers for a 4 point hit. 12 green arrows later, he is now up to 2,043,460th, and his excellent GW28 score of 60 (Costa 8*2, Firmino 12, Wollscheid 9, Daniels and Payet 6 each) has also taken him to the top of the 178-strong January to May mini-league.

      http://fantasy.premierleague.com/entry/1648676/history/

I strongly suspect that Sam’s failing team with its low TV may have been taken over by a more experienced member of the family about GW17 - but nevertheless, even if that is the case, what a spectacular recovery!

Interesting - that would explain a lot. I never managed to discover who he was before. If that is correct, then he has certainly done an excellent job with Sam's team, as well as in encouraging the rest of the family to take part in FPL. And it also shows what can be achieved with a limited budget (Sam's TV is still less than 100m).

Rough: Transferred Payet to Willian for his 1pointer. Really seemed like a good transfer against a Norwich side that had conceded 17 times for set pieces this year. Oh well, still got better fixtures then Payet.

Smooth: Cleared my two red flagged players

Rough: Was for a -4, and my late transfer of Stanislas --> Arnie meant that I ditched my 4-4-2 and switched to a 3-4-3, which meant Daniels on my bench. Meant a 7 point loss on the transfers. Ouch.

Did Sanchez > Erkisen and Ighalo > Vardy -4

If I haven't of done anything, saved 4 points and gained 3 points from an assist and rolled a transfer.

Also thought Alli was either gonna start or not feature at all and so had Francis first sub incase of another cleanie. You know that happened.

I don't think anyone can beat this one. Sold Payet, brought in Willian as a cheeky punt for the Norwich game.

Got so gutsy, I captained Willian too. Decided to bench Firmino as he had the toughest fixture on paper of my entire offense.

What followed was the crappiest game week I have ever had.

21 points for the defenders on my bench (cook and cresswell)

    Butland, Rudd
    Bellerin, Targett, Fuchs, Bertrand, Williams
    Sanchez, Ozil, Payet, Mahrez, Alli
    Aguero, Kane, Vardy

    2 FTs, £0.1m ITB

I must admit I'm hazy about the blank/DGW permutations but I've got my wildcard available and am leaning towards GW33 to play it (I can easily be swayed on that though).

Obvious potential targets: Sigurdsson, Man City assets (although I don't have great faith in them)
Obvious potential to lose: Rudd, Bellerin, Targett, Sanchez, Payet

Any thoughts? Sanchez -> Sigurdsson and someone else to a Man City player?

Is it wise to use all out attack now with this team?

    Butland

    Ivanovic Simpson

    Arnautovic Siggy Mahrez Özil Alli

    Kane Aguero Vardy

    Bench: McCarthy Alderweireld Bellerin Ward

Can see Tot Ars as a thriller and Crystal Palace can't keep a clean sheet these days.

    Thoughts?
