Dugout Discussion – Croatia vs Portugal

Saturday evening serves up one last encounter as Croatia take on Portugal for a place in the quarter finals.

Anti Cacic’s side are slight favourites for this one after coming from behind to defeat defending champions Spain 2-1 last time out.

Certainly, the Group D winners pose plenty of close-range threat. Croatia notched five times, netting twice in each of the last two, and were ranked joint-third along with Vincente del Bosque’s side for efforts inside the opposition box over the group stages.

Croatia’s late capitulation against Czech Republic in Matchday 2, where they threw away a two-goal advantage with 15 minutes remaining, offers hope to Portugal.

Fernando Santos’ side arrived at the Euros as a defensive-minded outfit but have fired more attempts on goal than any other side. Given that Cristiano Ronaldo registered an incredible 30 of his nation’s 70 attempts, the Real Madrid man will surely be a pivotal figure if Portugal are to progress.

      I think Belgium will score more but Payet will stand out more for France. I'm also in a pickle between KDB & Payet, I think Payet just clinches it for me though.

      Depends on Belgium they have the potential to win 4-0 or get knocked out losing 1-0 which is always the worry.

      Payet and France the safe game but expect a cagey game with few goals. Probably 2-0

        Yes sure of course. But realistically, I must still look at how things are played out. Seems very tight with scores being kept at 0-0, 1-1. I think this pattern could persist, and so probably a limited upside for today's game.

          This is my thought as well. But Portugal vs Hungary was never a 3-3 anyday. It was a Portugal 2-0 or 1-0 in the cards. If you dont take small risks, it doesnt get fun.

      Also something to consider is France have had a whole week to recover for todays game while Ireland played on Wednesday. Some tired legs out there today. From Bale(C) to Payet (C) without question for me.

      In terms of number of players played. You could be at the average. But you'll definitely need the like of Gomez, Kane and KDB to get at least 5 points among the two of them. They are your differentials.

        Not going with Bale saved me to some extent. I think top 5k managers should at the very least own Perisic and 50% of those should have Ramsey Payet as well. If Hazard explodes and KDB doesn't I'd likely fall down(Not that I'd hate a Hazard explosion). Kane would be final day captain in case KDB fails today.

          I wouldn't really say not having Bale saved you. You need Gomez and Kane to outdo him. But captaincy on Gomez, KDB or Kane could switch things up for you.
          For example, I don't have any of Gomez or Kane.

            Didn't destroy me not having Bale. He could have been everyone's captain with a Goal and an Assist. A solid 18 which would have been tough to counter. But now its only 10 and most are going to twist so am I. I don't want to Cap Gomez as there is potential of him not starting. Would like his points anyway.

        1 extra point for mids scoring over strikers.
        Take into consideration the CS of mids of 1pt as well.

        Does that make up for less likelihood of them scoring ?

      None of of the guys i m chasing have Lukaku and he is favorite to score today (see top of page post)

      Brain says follow stats with Kaku heart says Payet as i m French (the joy of his goal vs Romania is something i hadn't experienced since Welbz last min goal vs Leicester when i was at the emirates... )

        But as slovakia is a defensive unit..i do not see a lot of goals today from France..Maybe 1 or 2... But belgium can run riot or even play a dull game..chances are of a high scoring game for belgium and most of their goals have to pass through kaku..just my thoughts..what you guys think...

    I am changing Captain from Ronaldo > Giroud.

    Tough choice like as have Hazard & Payet too and only players tomorrow Dier & Hart. Giroud just edges it for me.

    I'm top in ML by 30 points so was thinking of playing it safe but I really see Giroud scoring.

    The beauty of a mid (c) choice is the added bonus of 5 for a goal plus 1 for a cs along with 2 for appearance = 8 (16)
    whereas striker = 6 (12)
    (I know cs ain't a guarantee)

        Tbf a cs plus appearance for a def = 6 (12) too but I agree so far I think it's been easier to predict (catch) a cs rather than a goal.
        Now a defender scoring with a cs is goal but v v hard to predict!

    Captain a defender if you think the games are going to be low-scoring.

    Sticking on a 5 point (c) is not a wise move in my opinion ( especially when Germany & France have easy games).

    FWIW Bet365 have the following odds for anytime goalscorer in their respective matches:

    Payet 21/10
    Hazard 2/1
    KDB 11/5
    Lukaku 5/4
    Muller 7/5

    I still prefer Payet out of those - gut feeling but my captain choices are usually pretty poor, probably because I ignore the stats.:)

        Because he's listed as a forward, so will get no CS points and less points for a goal. You need more than 1 goal from him.

      If it's between them, Payet. Kroos is a good player to have, but not really explosive, plays too deep, and Payet is also on set pieces.
