Dugout Discussion – Hungary vs Belgium

Sunday’s third and final fixture sees Hungary and Belgium do battle for the right to take on Wales in the Euro 2016 quarter-finals.

Having bounced back from an opening loss to Italy with wins over Republic of Ireland and Sweden, Belgium are regarded as favourites for the top half of the draw.

The Red Devils were placed fourth for shots on goal over the group stages, though found the net on just four occasions with big-hitters Kevin de Bruyne and Eden Hazard yet to open their accounts in the tournament.

Bernd Storck’s side will be no pushovers, though. Despite firing far less attempts than their opponents across the first three matches (35 to 56), Hungary registered just one attempt on target fewer, firing 16 to Belgium’s 17.

Joint-top scorers with Wales for the group stages, their three-goal salvo against Portugal last time out certainly suggests this evening’s match could be tighter than many expect.

Messi retiring from international football. The debate "Is Messi the best player of all time" ends here surely

He's the best player I'll see in my lifetime.

Of all time? Quite possibly but it's almost a pointless debate as different generations will prefer "their" players.

I prefer Maradona, and Messi is a player of "my generation". You cannot be the best ever if you haven't been a world champion. IMO

          Never understood this argument.

By that standard you would rule out Eusebio, di Stefano, Cruyff, Messi, C. Ronaldo, Maldini, Best... but include Marco Materazzi as a contender. Circumstance and single moments shouldn't define an entire career in my view.

Yes, I'd rule them out by that standard, but also rule out Materazzi on the basis of his footballing skills. There are no contenders, it's Pele, Maradona or Messi. Of course, it's just my opinion.

So basically only a handful of nations can produce the best player? It doesn't matter how good a player emerges from Jamaica say, he can never be better than Pele? Surely that's a flaw in the standard.

Well, we just have to deal with the fact that some nations are more talented for football than others

Its not an arguement on how good the nation is its an arguement on how good the player is and Messi is the best.

We have to have some objective measurable standards is all what Im saying. I enjoyed watching Ronaldinho the most, so I can say Ronaldinho is the best.

If George Best had been born in Brazil he may have won the World Cup whilst being the exact same player - why would that then suddenly make him a contender for best player in the world when being born in Northern Ireland prevents it?

I'm really not seeing a sensible argument here.

Come on, Best was a great player, but there were far better players than him. And that doesn't have anything with the country in which he was born.

I'm not saying Best WAS the best, I'm saying that to rule him out based on nationality is absurd.

No, I'm ruling them out, as I said, by their skills first, and I named the three that are widely regarded (rightly so) as the "contenders". Lack of World Cup title is just my argument why Messi isn't that.

What would be your standards for determining the best football player ever? It maybe cannot be determined at all, but just for the sake of the argument

There are no measurable standards in my view - any attempt to place hard constraints is going to be a problem. It's a qualitative debate, not a quantitative one.

I believe that football is improving in time, it's a fact actually. Judging by that, Messi is 100% the best player of all time, which makes Ronaldo 2nd.

Football in general is improving in time, not individual talent. By you argument every player in the future will be better than these players now. Can't wait for the Rashford vs Alli best of all time debate in 10 years time 🙂

Is it worth swapping out Rami to Cahill or Smalling because of his suspension?

If Spain is eliminated, I will swap JuanFran out for Cahill or Smalling.

I am playing the Sun game and have 8 transfers left for the entire tournament.

    0m in funds.

    Patricio*
    Hector*, JuanFran, Rami*, Meunier*
    De Bruyne*, Payet*, Kroos*
    Gomez*, Ronaldo*, Bale*

    * denotes players whose teams are definately in the Quarter Final's.

Still devastated it hasn't been awarded Bemba. Only 16% ownership so he's pretty much a differential, more so when you've captained him. What's worse is the non-awarding of the assist would give those who had Payet captain a chance to catch up with Dier (c) 🙁

I think the big problem here KOL is consistency and the definition of a 'solo',
The rules lack clarity and it seems MCDs already gave out an assist to this type of 'solo'
