Great Expectations

While Anthony Martial may have arrived at Old Trafford last September as something of an unknown quantity, the exorbitant amount it took to sign him from Monaco meant much was expected from the-then 19-year-old attacker.

The Frenchman ended the campaign with a reasonable return of 11 goals and six assists from 31 Premier League appearances, playing predominantly on the left wing, with his personal highlights including a goal on his debut against Liverpool, while he also scored a last minute winner in the 2-1 win over Everton in the FA Cup semi-final.

A fifth place finish in the Premier League saw Louis van Gaal replaced by Jose Mourinho as Man United manager, and with the Portuguese boss able to bring in the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Henrikh Mkhitaryan this summer, it’s expected that United will considerably improve on the meagre 49 goals they managed last term.

Having had a year to find his feet in England, Martial looks poised to better his attacking output from last season this time around, and reclassified as a midfielder in Fantasy Premier League (FPL) this season, is likely to prove a popular option for Fantasy managers.

  • The Van Gaal era at Old Trafford saw United regress significantly as an attacking force, so the arrival of Mourinho should see some improvement on that front. While the Portuguese manager’s sides haven’t always been the most attack-minded, Chelsea did score 73 goals in their 2014/15 title winning campaign, more than any side managed last term. Expectations for the likes of Martial should certainly be higher this time around then.
  • With Mkhitaryan’s creativity and Ibrahimovic’s ability to bring his team-mates into play, United’s forward line should be much improved this season. Martial only managed a goal attempt every 48.6 minutes last time out, but with the new boys providing 15 and 13 league assists for Dortmund and PSG respectively, the Frenchman’s ability to run in behind opposition backlines could come to fruition more often.
  • Martial impressively produced 213 penalty box touches last season, just two less than Tottenham’s Harry Kane despite playing seven less matches and being mainly stationed on the left flank. A goal conversion rate of 19.3% compared favourably to the likes of Arsenal’s Olivier Giroud (15.8%), Kane (15.7%) and Everton’s Romelu Lukaku (15.3%), so if he United can create him more opportunities, Martial’s clinical nature in front of goal should see an improvement on last year’s 11 strikes.
  • Martial was a major beneficiary of the Bonus Point System (BPS) last season, accruing 21 in total, a number that would have ranked him sixth among midfielders. Only Crystal Palace’s Wilfried Zaha (274) and Leicester’s Riyad Mahrez (255) managed more dribbles than Martial’s 207 last season among midfielders and forwards, which is one area the former Monaco attacker should continue to shine in. His reclassification as a midfielder will also see him earn an extra point for each goal scored and clean sheet registered, so after United claimed 18 shut-outs last term, there is clearly plenty of scope for Martial to better his 141 points in FPL from last season.
  • The 20-year-old currently sits in just 7.5% of FPL 15-man squads, whereas fellow United midfielder Mkhitaryan has an ownership of 19.1%, with Ibrahimovic leading the way among Mourinho’s side with 31.8% ownership. The France international is shaping up to be a differential heading into Gameweek 1, then, and considering his place in the starting XI looks pretty secure, with the likes of Memphis Depay and Jesse Lingard offering back-up, he certainly appears an overlooked option at this point in time.
  • Given United’s generally favourable start (bou, SOT, hul, MCI, wat) to the new campaign, many Fantasy managers will be trying to find a spot for at least one of their attackers. With Martial and Mkhitaryan (both 9.5) offering a 2.0 saving from the Swede, the pair may offer the superior value, particularly if Rooney maintains spot-kick duties ahead of the former PSG striker. With Mkhitaryan still an unknown quantity when it comes to English football, despite his impressive attacking statistics whilst playing for Dortmund, Martial could be the one to favour from the off.

Yep. It seems everyone (myself included) has gone for Mkhitaryan after the initial 50/50 thoughts when the game launched.

I'm starting to lean back towards Martial, and this article has probably tipped me over the edge

Ibra is expensive, so you'd need him to deliver. But then again if you don't go for him and he does hit the ground running you need Martial/Mk to also score well to keep in touch. Of course you have the extra 2.0 to spend elsewhere too..

Anyone care to rate my team?

    Foster/Jakupovic
    Shaw/Williams/Friend/Wasilewski/Kone
    Silva/Ayew/Tadic/Firmino/Capoue
    Zlatan/Aguero/Gray

I've chosen to go ultra cheap in goal and quite cheap in defense. The chance that I'll be wildcarding after GW3 during the international break is quite big so I've focused on the first 3 GW's. If I were to spend money on defense I'd probably go Arsenal/Chelsea, but Arsenal's fixtures and Chelsea's uncertainty have moved me away from them.
Midfield is where my biggest question marks are. If Ayew is moving to West Ham I may downgrade him to upgrade Silva to KDB. Then again, Silva had a quiet summer. Firmino has difficult fixtures to start, but Liverpool have shown to be able to score a lot in the big games under Klopp last year and he seems to be doing quite well in pre-season. Up front I've chosen for the pre-season man Gray and I don't dare to go without Zlatan. Aguero speaks for itself I guess.

    All comments appreciated

Man City assets are so off-putting now

Aguero obviously the main man in the league, but imagine when rotation and stuff kicks in from cup/ European/ Christmas fixtures.

    Nightmare!

Aguero could potentially be rotated with Bony and Iheanacho.
And the attacking mids will be a lottery of 3 from Sterling, Nolito, Nasri, Silva, De Bruyne, Sane, Navas.

    Courtois - Jakupovic
    ____ - Shaw - ____ - McAuley - 4.0

Which structure for the remaining 2 spots:

    A. Azpilicueta + 5.0 (Williams, Stones, Gabriel, Morgan)
    or
    B. Walker + Coleman (or other 2x 5.5 combo)

    ??

Tough one, if anything it looks like you've got to much money in defence!

I would go with 1x5.0 & 1x5.5 and invest elsewhere.

When it comes to midfield talk about strength in depth...

    Fernando - Fernandinho - Gundogan - Yaya - Delph - Navas - Nasri - Sterling - Sane - Nolito - Silva - KDB

I know, I know...Delph. And perhaps Nolito will be used more as a striker - not sure.

And yet, I'd wager their double pivot will be the weakest of the top clubs

Mkhitaryan, Martial, Mata, Herrera, Schneiderlin, Carrick, Depay, Januzaj, Lingard, Fellaini, A.Pereira, Gribbin, Angel Gomes, DJ Buffonge

      😛

    Nasri £6.5m

That's a pricetag crying out for a move to a team like Leicester, Southampton, Everton, Stoke

    3rd defender @4.5...

    A) Fernández
    B) Pieters
    C) McAuley/Jevans (WBA double up with Foster)

I have Foster/McAuley in my initial draft but have increasing concerns over West Brom at the moment.

Of half a mind to bring Valdes/Pieters in. May leave it a little longer though.

First go at a Aguero + Ibrahimovic team, what do we think?

    Foster / Jakupovic
    Stones / Gabriel / Friend / Pieters / Taylor
    Hazard / Mahrez / Ayew / Gradel / Capoue
    Aguero / Ibrahimovic / Negredo

All this tinkering has left me feeling like the more I change the worse my team is getting.. Has made me go back to my first RMT and note it down before it's lost as it looks a lot better than what I've ended up with at the moment!

For the people going with the popular strike force of Kun, Gray + Long.
Looking at the first 8 fixtures for Southampton and Burnley I can't see Gray + Long getting more than 7 goals between them.
Don't see how it is such a popular template combination?

      A) It's not that popular
      B) For teams with that striker force, I'd expect a 3-5-2
      C) In a 3-5-2, I'd bite your hand off for 7 goals from 8 games from my second striker spot

From the RMT's without Kunbra it is popular.
In a 3-5-2 that would be assuming you picked the right striker each game week (unlikely).
Just opening yourself up to the frustration of an unused sub out scoring a starting player.

    Foster & Jak

    Shaw/Valencia, Stones, Friend, Fernandez, Smith

    Haz, Eriksen/Alli, Siggy, Townsend, Capoue

    Gray/Negredo/Long, Ibra, Aguero

Please RMT any comments would be appreciated.. Planning for the inevitable early WC of course

Only concern with Martial is that pre-season, most of the attacks seem to have gone down the United right (Valencia / Mkh) rather than the left (Shaw / Martial)

That ties in perfectly with Martial tbh - he's the scorer, not the assister

Two pre-seasons ago we played midfield triangles trampling Real Madrid, not a whiff of it during the season.

xxxxxth draft after so many tinkering haha

Any thoughts? I have a feeling its very light on defence

    Forster/Jaku
    Stones, PVA, Pieters/Friend, Paredes
    Haz, Mahrez, Tadic, Feghouli/Fletcher
    Kun, Ibra, Gray

    Any places for improvements? Thanks
