Pre-Season

Sleeper – Cesc Fabregas

After three successful seasons with Barcelona, Cesc Fabregas’ return to the top-flight proved pivotal to Chelsea’s 2014/15 title-winning campaign.

Snapped up by Jose Mourinho after former club Arsenal opted against reacquiring him, the playmaker delivered three goals and 19 assists in his first year at Stamford Bridge to leap back into Fantasy Premier League (FPL) managers’ plans.

Chelsea’s disastrous defence of their Premier League crown in 2015/16 forced a reassessment.

The Blues simply failed to rediscover their cutting edge and despite replacing Mourinho with Guus Hiddink midway through the season, their big-hitters proved a bitter disappointment.

Having earned just two assists in the first 20 Gameweeks, Fabregas racked up five goals and as many assists in the final 18 rounds of fixtures but it was a case of too little, too late for the Spaniard.

Although he ultimately collected just 133 points, Fabregas was still only two points off Willian as the top-scoring Chelsea player in FPL and comfortably bettered Eden Hazard’s tally of 104 points, despite the latter’s late run of four goals in the final five fixtures.

The Prospects

Last term aside, there can be no doubting Fabregas’ potential as a consistent Fantasy asset.

Indeed, the 2015/16 campaign was the first time in his last seven active Premier League seasons that the playmaker has failed to provide at least ten assists.

Even when adding in last term’s tally, Fabregas has racked up 98 assists over that time frame – that’s an average of 14 assists per season.

Considering that reliable output, Fabregas’ price of 7.5 in Fantasy Premier League may well prove to be a bargain if he can remain a regular starter under new manager Antonio Conte.

With N’Golo Kante on board, Conte’s preferred formation is likely to dictate how we assess the Chelsea midfield. Conte had utilised a 4-2-4 in pre-season but switched to 4-1-4-1 for the Frenchman’s debut against AC Milan, with the new boy screening in front of the Blues’ back-four.

The 4-2-4 is perhaps the less enticing of the two. Kante certainly looks nailed on, which would leave Fabregas, Oscar and Nemanja Matic battling it out for the role alongside the former Leicester ball-winner.

Clearly, the latter formation offers Conte more scope with his central midfield selection and could allow Fabregas to benefit from Kante’s energy, affording him the freedom to dictate matters in the centre of the park.

Identically priced to the Spain international, Oscar is another contender who could also play his way into consideration. The Brazilian netted twice against Milan in midweek – including a converted spot-kick whilst Hazard was on the pitch – and, having started just 20 times last term, will be looking to establish himself as a viable option under the Italian.

Chelsea’s lack of European commitments – due to their tenth placed finish in 2015/16 – also limits the likelihood of rest and rotation this time around and affords Conte the chance to make his stamp on the Blues’ starting XI.

At present, Hazard’s two goals as a sub in a recent friendly against Real Madrid suggests the Belgian is gearing up for a revival under Conte. Should he be utilised through the middle – as he was against Madrid – there’s every chance that the former Lille man will emerge as the most enticing option at Stamford Bridge.

Nonetheless, Fabregas – who is currently owned by 8% of FPL managers – cannot be overlooked. Granted, he doesn’t have the same explosive potential as Hazard but, if he secures a place in Conte’s first XI plans, history suggests he could make a mockery of that very kind price tag.

So I decided to give my team a try at top 6-8 team coverage, and it looks a lot better in my eyes, but I'll let you guys be the judge of that:

    Cech (Jakupovic)
    Walker Shaw Stones (McAuley, Pieters)
    Nolito Firmino Fabregas Deulofeu (Capoue)
    Aguero(c) Rooney(vc) Musa

    Thoughts?

Fairly certain. Silva's probably the most nailed on to start because he could play as a CM too, but Nolito has more goal threat so he's in for me.

Between the uncertainty surrounding his fitness and the Champions League qualifiers I've decided to downgrade KDB to Mahrez at the start. What should I do with the savings?

    A) Save it with an eye towards getting in KDB / Sanchez
    B) Invest in my uber cheap 5x4.5 defense, bringing in a couple of 5.5s (e.g., Shaw, Baines, Terry)

Currently looking like this and feeling I am nearly there, please rate

0.5 in bank. Toying with upgrading Friend to Gabriel or save to upgrade Mahrez if needed to Hazard. Could get Kane for 0.5 less instead of Ibra and do both?

LESSONS LEARNED FROM THE 2ND WILDCARD/BB COMBO

I have come to the conclusion that combining 2nd wildcard with a DGW BB is a strategic mistake and I intend to use mine early (probably GW1 or GW3, before wildcarding). Seeing that I keep getting asked about this I'll just put my reasoning in one place and be done with it. Sorry for the long post but that's the way it goes.

    So, here's the reasoning...

    1. Value of the BB

First we have to establish a base value for the BB. In my view managers are over-optimistic about its worth.

Taking a 3-4-3 structure as standard, your bench in any week consists of your 2 weakest defenders, your weakest midfielder and your weaker GK. Typically they are cheap players. So, assuming you choose a week where all (or most) have decent prospects what can you expect from them? I'd say 12 points would be a realistic par score (given that you'd pick your time and wouldn't play BB when you had injured or dropped players there).

Incidentally, if you think 12 points is over-optimistic then it makes my argument even better. 🙂

    2. Value of the BB in a DGW (standard structure)

By implication, therefore, what playing BB in a DGW might achieve for you is an extra projected 12 points if all are DGW players and all actually play twice. That's assuming you stick to your standard structure.

    3. Value of the BB in a DGW (non-standard structure A)

This is where things become more difficult to define. For example, you might choose to keep some SGW players during the DGW. They may be higher value players. In which case your DGW bench isn't cheap players any more. But it is still your weakest players that week. An example from last season was Arsenal players for the GW36 wildcard GW37 BB combo. Most managers would have wanted to keep, say, Bellerin, Koscielny and Sanchez (or other combination) in view of the games against Norwich (GW36) and Villa (GW38). But what did that mean? It meant Bellerin, Koscielny and Sanchez away at City were 75% of their BB in GW37.

Could they expect to beat 18 points from those 3 in that one game? If not then the BB projected value would be worse than in 2 above. (In actual fact Sanchez scored in a 2-2 draw and the 3 players amassed 9 points between them, so nothing better than you'd hope for in a SGW BB.

    4. Value of the BB in a DGW (non-standard structure B)

Another alternative is to shed high-value players (Aguero, Kane, Hazard, Sanchez for example if they don't have a DGW) and spread the cash in order to have better players on the bench, diverging completely from the standard structure. This could certainly give a higher BB projection but it would come at the cost of weakening your squad in the GW before (when wildcarding) and for some time after (unless hits are taken to re-balance, in which case the cost must be deducted from the extra benefits achieved).

    5. Summary 1.

One way or another, I can't see that a gain in excess of 12 points or so by playing the BB in a DGW can be realistically projected. Not if you take the surrounding factors into account. I believe it will often be less than that but let's take 12 as the number. So the question is whether that 12 point gain is worth pursuing.

    6. Value of the 2nd Wildcard.

Traditionally this has been the most important tool in the FPL manager's arsenal (or in previous seasons the 'free' wildcard rather than the winter one). Many of the better managers used to deploy it early rather than save it for a late-season DGW. There was no conclusive evidence as to which course of action was better. But the consensus view (with which I would broadly agree) was that it was worth 24-32 points. Let's say 28. Now, if it is worth 28 points, even if it is worth 24, why would we use it to prepare for another chip (BB) when the gain is a projected 12 points? We would be selling it cheap.

OK, maybe you can get a double benefit that way. Maybe you can get the 2nd wildcard benefit plus the upgraded BB benefit. That, I guess, would be the rationale behind combining them. So we need to assess whether that is possible.

    7. Compromises to the 2nd Wildcard when used to prepare for a DGW BB.

    a) You must wildcard a week before the DGW. That means making decisions with potential injuries to come and more than likely some players/teams still involved in European football, so rotation risk as well. This is risky, even assuming that you would want to wildcard in the DGW otherwise. A week of information at that stage of the season is valuable.
    b) You must also compromise your team the week before the DGW because you are wildcarding with the DGW in mind. How much you choose to compromise it is up to you but almost inevitably you will lose players a week before you would otherwise choose to. And those playing more cautiously will probably reduce the projected benefit of the DGW BB by keeping more SGW players (see above). Swings and roundabouts here.
    c) The fact of needing to focus on 15 players rather than 11 to play in the DGW will cause further compromises (as referred to above). You may well compromise your squad for the weeks after as a result. Many GW33/34 wildcarders last season claimed to have done well in the management of this but many of them have did so by taking multiple hits. The need for those hits may well have been reduced or eliminated had they only been focusing on 11 players for the DGW.
    d) This is probably the most important one. You deny yourself the wildcard at another time because you are saving it for the DGW!
Now, maybe you really don't need it before. But last season, for example, a lot of short teams were fielded in GW30 and a lot of hits were also taken that week. The rough shape of the DGWs was clear by then. For some managers that would probably have been an ideal time to deploy the 2nd wildcard. If they were too fixated on the 2nd wildcard/BB combo then they might well not even consider that option.
    e) And if not needed before, then surely the 2nd wildcard is best used in the DGW itself. With the possibility to have 11 DGW players and 4 non-playing SGW subs ready for the next gameweek.

    8. Summary 2.

Now, all of this is very difficult to quantify statistically so we must rely on rationality. For every manager that does well out of the 2nd Wildcard/BB combo (or says they have done) there will be others that will say the opposite. So anecdotal evidence won't help us.

The crux of my argument is therefore very simple. The DGW BB may be worth around an expected 12 points more than a SGW BB. The compromises in how and when you use the 2nd wildcard and the negative effects before and after the DGW just aren't likely to be justified by that 12-point gain. If the constellation of fixtures around the DGW perfectly favour the combo you could come out ahead that way. But in all likelihood they won't be that perfect. And if you wait to find out you are likely to have given yourself no other reasonable way to go anyway.

That's the point. By waiting to see you corner yourself into what is very likely to be a sub-optimal position. Better to use the BB earlier in the season, take the 12 or so points and get that distraction out of the way. BB is not that big of a deal and it's not worth basing your whole season strategy around.

That's what I will be doing. And I will use my 2nd wildcard at the time when I see it gives me best advantage in its own right, not confused or compromised by the need to prepare for a DGW BB. Most likely I will use it in the main DGW itself.

    9. Caveats and Options.

    a) Some managers like to run with a cheap, non-playing defender and a cheap, non-playing GK as well as a cheap midfielder for most of the season. That's not my preferred tactic, I have a rule that all my defenders must be starters for their clubs and I rotate them. I also rotate GKs. But I appreciate that playing BB earlier in the season may be less inviting for those that like an ultra-cheap (essentially useless) bench.

    b) In arguing that 2nd Wildcard/BB is a flawed combo I don't say that playing BB shortly after a wildcard is a bad idea. But maybe it could be better after the 1st wildcard? You could set up accordingly and then gradually transition into your long-term preferred structure afterwards. That's something am still looking at and it's also something that would work for those that prefer an ultra-cheap bench most of the time.

However, playing BB in GW1, 2 or 3 (also in effect shortly after a wildcard) looks to me to be the best route if you select sure starters. Given that many good managers will use their 1st wildcard before GW4 anyway (and that's my intention) the cost to squad structure is very minimal that way. I can set my initial team up for 3 weeks' fixtures including BB. And after the wildcard I'll settle into my long-term structure.

    10. Final Summary

That's why I believe a DGW BB is a flawed strategy and this post explains the strategy I am using instead. I don't want or need to convince anyone else to do the same but as I keep getting asked, there's the explanation. 🙂

      I think you're overthinking this.

It's quite simple; if you have a good start there isn't really much use in wildcarding early other than to gain team value. In that instance it may be better to save your WC and BB for a DGW.

If you have a bad start, more points can be gained from an early WC.

In terms of which week to play your BB; I don't see how there is any advantage in not waiting for a DGW, all things being equal you're more likely on average to obtain a better bonus score increase in a DGW. There is also a significant risk in not being able to use it in a DGW when it is more likely your rivals will use a chip.

I agree that it doesn't make sense to compromise the WC for the sake of a BB as the WC is much more valuable with a much higher ceiling, the BB is pretty much just an instant gratification. However I won't be using the BB early as I'm currently going down a similar route to your point in 9.a).

I'll play it when I have an impossible benching dillema later in the season, it's an All Out Attack Plus chip in my eyes 😛

What about combining AoA and BB in consecutive weeks and having a strong front 8 for both those weeks? Maybe following it up with a WC?Might be better later on though when there's more money to upgrade the 5th mid.

Yes, Madridista, that's also a perfectly sage solution.

The main point is not to get hung up on it. The only chip that really needs playing in a DGW is TC where the potential is considerably bigger. Aguero or Sanchez delivered 25 or so extra points that way last season and weren't hard to identify.

Agree with nearly everything you wrote except the main part where you explained your choice to use the BB.
You have already said that ts best when you can select sure starters, surely the worst time to do that is in the first few weeks?
Also, your squads should be stronger later in the season so it makes no sense at all to me to use it early

      1. Ruth_NZ
        • 9 Years
        7 years, 9 months ago

The main point is to detach it from the 2nd wildcard.

The "squads stronger later" argument is very marginal. The overall budget gain is unlikely to be much more than 5% and that will be on the pitch not on your bench (in the main). It's barely relevant to this actually.

Selecting sure starters can equally well be done early on. You think Karanka will drop Friend? Or that Pulis will drop Evans? Or that it won't be clear whether Mandanda or Hennessey gets the nod for Palace? Or that Pochettino will rest Eriksen? That would be my likely GW1 BB if I went with my team right now.

All your arguments are marginal, we are talking fine margins here on all the points discussed.
My bench at dgw point this season past was way stronger than it was at the start.
I think most teams are to varying degrees unless you have lost interest in the game.
if you think there is no greater risk of selecting guaranteed players at the beginning of the season then we will have to agree to differ

            No, you are wrong, really.

If you apply VORP theory and have a gain of 5% usable budget (5.0m) and that is spread over 15 players then your bench might be expected to deliver 1.2 points per week more later in the season than at the start. 1.2 points is marginal in this context.

The "fit and firing" element is fair, though. That's why I'm still debating GW3 vs GW1.

The more I think about it, the more BB feels like a hindrance rather than an advantage. It is something you have to compromise your team for and plan around. Decent attackers are atleast 5.5m. I don't want to be restricting my teams budget with an expensive attacker sitting on the bench just so i can use him for 1 gw as part of a BB.

Ruth say you use it GW1 won't you have this problem? Gw2 and 3 a lot of money on the bench? And if you use it GW3 I'm assuming you'll have a 5.5m+ attacker on the bench for gw 1 + 2.

        1. Ruth_NZ
          • 9 Years

Not really Nab. I won't have the statutory 4.5 midfielder is all. I can live with that for 3 weeks.

The fixtures give some good, cheap defenders decent CS chances in GW1 & 3 so that playing 5 defenders will look worthwhile. You can have a 4.5 x 2 GK rotation that works well for those weeks as well. The only difference is that I'd be spending 6.0 (probably, maybe 5.5) on my 5th mid temporarily.

BB as a potential hindrance is exactly it. You have to recognise it for what it is and not fall for the overblown valuation of it. My GW1/3 idea tries to use it well but eliminate (well, significantly reduce) the disruption it can cause if you are too hung up on it.

Yeah the WC Gw4 is the crucial part to this. It means it's only 2 gw's max of carrying a slightly more expensive attacker on the bench. Otherwise it could be difficult getting back to a "standard structure" like it would be if used it after first WC or on the main late DGW.

I will save it in case I get a defender injury crisis and don't want to take a hit. Otherwise I might use it GW38.

Yeah my thoughts exactly. Will use when I see the right opportunity or not at all. I think it COULD be viable to use it in GW2 with the GW 1/3 BB. Thhere will be expensive 8th attacker and GW2 fixtures aren't great for defence. Food for thought.

What do you think of something like this for GW 1 BB and WC GW4.

                Valencia, Friend, Souare
                Hazard, Siggy, Townsend, Redmond,
                Kun, Ibrahimovic, Musa

                Heaton, Ramirez, Naylor, Evans

It's not far away from my draft. I have Rooney instead of Ibra and that makes upgrades elsewhere easy - Dann instead of Souaré and VVD instead of Evans for example.

The reason for that would be that I don't want to double on WBA away at Palace. Plus I like the added defender goal threat. I'd do it slightly differently for a BB in GW3, the WBA double would be OK that week.

Is Musa nailed do you think? Currently my GW1 BB draft has Gray instead of Musa.

You think Ramirez is a better choice than Fischer?

Yeah I noticed you have been talking a bit about Rooney and that certainly makes it easy to complete the rest of the team. As you can I've gone pretty cheap in a lot of areas.

The Gw1 Wba double is certainly something I'm a bit concerned about but If i'm not mistaken WBA actually keep more CS's away and Palace don't look like they will sign a striker in time to start them GW1.

I can't see Musa not starting. I mean 2/3 from him, Okazaki and Albrighton will start. The guy is a class above these other 2 and it's not like he has fitness concerns coming into GW1. Gray is a pretty safe choice but I think Musa is a brilliant punt. Gray gw 2 and 3 fixtures not great.

I had Fischer all pre season until Ramirez came in @ 5.5m. Was expecting 6.0m. Ramirez will be the main guy that controls everything in attack, has PL experience and on set pieces. Scored 7 goals and 4 assists in 15 starts effectively single handedly winning them promotion after signing in January. Fischer is somewhat an unknown quantity. Has goals in him but I just feel Ramirez will be involved in 50% of Boros goals.

If Musa starts Community Shield and plays decently I think he will be a pretty safe choice. Potential for a huge haul gw1.

I don't mind GW2 for Gray, I don't much trust 'Pool for clean sheets. My plan was to replace him for GW3. I like the Musa idea but I haven't fully caught up with pre-season yet. Charity Shield may give further perspective.

The Ramirez comments are also helpful, thanks. I did my Boro research before they signed him. Fischer looks a good prospect to me based on his career history (and I think he could play pretty far forward) but it may well be that Ramirez is preferable. These are the things I'll fine-tune next week.

I never do RMTs because often others don't have the same strategy (or just a "wait and see" approach). I always approach FPL with a strategic grand plan underlying my decisions, so asking for general feedback would be pointless. But this conversation is very useful, I guess because we are both looking at the same thing.

The AOA GW2 idea is also a good one by the way and I will consider it too. It certainly provides another option. Only thing is that it's a useful chip to have in the back pocket in the case of an injury crisis, it isn't worth much in itself but it could save you a hit somewhere down the line.

Last point - yes, WBA had more away clean sheets than home ones last season. But Palace at Selhurst isn't a fixture where I want WBA double defence, especially with Bolasie or Townsend in my team. Personally I would rather find a combination with just Foster.

I don't mind Gray GW2 either. I also don't mind Musa vs ARS GW2 with Koscielny fitness in doubt and many others returning to fitness after Euros. Overall I prefer hul, ARS, SWA to SWA, LIV, che. Potentially saves a transer if you were going to get rid of Gray anyway.

I think you will find Ramirez is your man after research. Fischer has a great goals/assists to mins in Holland but Ramirez will be the main man for Boro.

Yeah, I only do RMTs for a bit of fun here and there. People will just push you towards the template as soon as you have a couple of different picks there. In my experience, the FFS template generally starts off poorly anyway.

                        Agree regards AOA

It has been on my mind that having Townend and double wba def is not the way to go for a BB. Unfortunately with the budget I have for my def theres not much better i can do. A potential combo is Phil Jones (will start gw1 atleast) + Morgan instead of Valencia + Evans. Will know more in a few days..

                        Well, good luck. 🙂

This whole conversation has made me even more confident about the early BB anyway. The reasoning is sound but when you are diverging from the norm there are always lots of voices saying you're an idiot. 😕

Yeah there's always that bit of doubt isn't there, what you have to remind yourself is the norm/majority are sheeps and ignorant 🙂

People don't like this way of thinking because it "goes against the norm" but if you think about it and use the rationale that you effectively use a wildcard prior to GW1, then it makes a fair amount of sense. Especially is you are thinking you will wildcard after GW3 or GW4. Good stuff Ruth, thank you for the explanation as well.

If I do this, I will likely play it in GW3 simply because I will have a better understanding off who is going to play.

That's the advantage of GW3 right enough. Whether I go GW1 or GW3 will probably depend on how sure I am about GW1 starters next Friday after the press conferences.

If you think about it, GW1 is the only opportunity all season to wildcard (in effect) and BB in the same gameweek. It is possible to fine-tune the BB squad right till the last minute.

Yeah absolutely. I can see what you are saying, it will just be dependant on how confident I am with my GW1 starters as you said! Do you mind me asking which GW1 cheap defenders you like? or are you not going "cheap at all"?

I fully understand if you don't want to answer that by the way, some people don't like telling other their team construction.

Palace (I will have Delaney if I don't have Dann), Boro (Friend or Ayala), Swansea (Taylor), Burnley (Mee), WBA (Evans) and Stoke (Pieters) are all possibles at 5.0/4.5.

I will certainly have VVD and probably Shaw/Valencia.

Exactly what combination I go for depends on which GKs I go with. It will probably be Foster/Mandanda I think if I go GW1.
