Scout Notes

Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Arsenal somehow manage to avoid a third consecutive Champions League opening defeat while Manchester City’s match (and the transport network) fall foul of the weather on a stormy night in every sense of the word.

Sanchez snatches point for Gunners

A 77th-minute strike from Alexis Sanchez (11.0) gave Arsenal a point they barely deserved from their Champions League opener in Paris.

Possession, attempts and shots on target stats might have been almost even, but the hosts were markedly the better side and should have won easily if not for their profligacy in front of goal.

The chief culprit was Edinson Cavani, who opened the scoring after just 42 seconds and then want on to waste three further chances as Arsenal struggled to find any rhythm throughout a torrid first half.

Arsene Wenger made three changes from the side that beat Southampton on Saturday, with Sanchez and Alex Iwobi (5.8) replacing Lucas Perez (8.5) and Theo Walcott (7.5), with the Chilean playing up front.

More surprisingly, Wenger opted for David Ospina (4.9) over Petr Cech (5.5) in goal. It was a purely tactical choice, the Frenchman insisted, which will be a relief for the 16.9% of Fantasy Premier League managers who own Cech – the third most popular keeper in the game.

“I have two world-class goalkeepers. I can give them both games. If they do not play, you can’t keep two world-class goalkeepers. But we have an in-house rule that the keepers know. It’s important to have clear rules like that. They know what the rules are for the season and, if they change, I’ll tell them. It’s down to performances whether he stays in the team but, on what he delivered tonight, David has the right to stay in the team for the next Champions League game.” – Arsene Wenger

Walcott’s omission, meanwhile, was precautionary for what Wenger described as a ‘very short term’ knee problem.

Arsenal, who looked porous at the back all night, improved after the break, but it took the introduction of Olivier Giroud (9.0) to change the course of the match. The move meant a return to the left flank for Sanchez and he thrived in that more familiar role, firing home a rebound from an Iwobi shot.

It’s two goals and as many assists in his last pair of starts now for Sanchez – he currently sits third in this week’s Captain Poll ahead of a trip to a Hull side that have conceded an attempt on goal every 4.6 minutes so far, quicker than any other side.

Giroud is yet to start a match this season, and he won’t be doing that in the Champions League any time soon having been sent off for a second bookable offence following a clash with Marco Verratti. That, conversely, could improve the striker’s domestic minutes if Wenger looks to rotate his squad for future European ties.

Arsenal XI: Ospina, Monreal, Koscielny, Mustafi, Bellerin, Coquelin (Xhaka 71), Ozil (Elneny 85), Cazorla, Oxlade-Chamberlain (Giroud 63), Iwobi, Sanchez.

Pep’s European bow washed away

Torrential rain and a lightning storm that struck down Manchester’s tram network put paid to Pep Guardiola’s first group stage match as City boss.

There was time, however, to at least announce the team, with a number of decisions giving some pointers ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Bournemouth.

As expected, Sergio Aguero (13.0) was given the nod up front but remains banned domestically, while the in-form Kevin De Bruyne (10.5) continued in midfield despite limping off towards the end of the Manchester derby with what the local press had reported as cramp through fatigue.

Guardiola went for Aleksandar Kolarov (5.9) and Pablo Zabaleta (4.9) as his full-backs, which could indicate that Bacary Sagna and Gael Clichy (both 5.4) are being lined up to start versus Bournemouth.

And Nolito (9.0) was replaced by Jesus Navas (6.4), again suggesting that the Celta Vigo signing is being preserved for a run at the Cherries.

The tie was re-scheduled to this evening, leaving City with just two full days to prepare for the Bournemouth fixture, and Guardiola might well shuffle his pack further as a result.

Man City XI: Bravo, Zabaleta, Otamendi, Stones, Kolarov, Fernandinho, Navas, De Bruyne, Silva, Sterling, Aguero.

    A Honeymoon Wild Card:
The squits, no hits and seeing who fits.
Now for the average man or woman, if it so shall be; a marriage should be a time of wonder, joy and relaxation. A moment to savour, enjoy and let ones hooves down to be free for the serendipitous events that unravel. But for the true Fantasy Football addict, it doesn't quite work like that, despite best laid plans.
If you'd be so kind, let me explain.

With the lead up to our wedding I had very little time to prepare my team for anything.
The FPL site crash did not suit busy working people such as myself, and on the morning of THAT Saturday I had many players who I didn't want, and without many I craved. Nevertheless, I was fairly happy with the start of OR 33k.
No Ibra hurt (one of the players I desperately tried to get on that faithful morning) and fell dramatically the following week. A couple of typical me captain punts didn't work out, Vardy and Tadic being those. Then came the holiday.
I flew to Hungary to stay with the parents of my bride to be. A place carved out of 70's communist idealism, 3 giant dogs and a cabbage patch to boot. Needless to say; the Internet was that of pre dial up, and it didn't go well.
Amidst communicating with flower arrangers and balloon blowers, I tried to find a spare second to squeeze in some previous time for my beloved FPL. Now the cause was not helped when I put my phone in to my trusty rucksack whilst visiting a cake museum, only for my peach iced tea to pop a leak and ruin my only viable source of Internet.
Then the wedding. High up in Buda Castle, Budapest. A grandiose building of fine Hungarian expressionism, overlooking the Danube and Parliament.
To follow, Búsuló Juhász restaurant, for drinks, food and a boogie.
After the wedding (1st September ((round two))), we checked in to a posh hotel. It had all the mod cons, wifi, a hair dryer, and a Corby trouser press. The Mrs wanted to chill and be romantic, I wanted to see who was on pens for Arsenal.
I ordered a glass of brandy and some hot milk for her, which she thought was an incredibly bizarre combination, but she drank accordingly. With in 20 minutes she had fallen asleep in her satin nightdress and I scrambled down stairs to the alluring lobby with the HP laptops glowing before me.

I took a breath and began to contemplate the sheer absurdness of what I was about to do, a GW 4 wild card on my honeymoon. I threw in a few place holders, got rid of fallers, chucked in risers, logged off and got the glass lift back up to my room before Ivett could realise. The guilt and the buzz of happiness fought each other for hours, and on in to a troubled nights sleep.

The next morning I was up at 6am to go back to London, (albeit briefly) attempted to get my phone exchanged or fixed to no avail and flew to Bordeaux in the evening.
By this time I had begged my wife of 4 days to let me use her phone. That's when I found the most evil of presences, the 3G sign when there is no 3G. It tempts you with promises but never delivers, the David Silva of networks. Why do you have an iPhone 5?!! I scream.

And so to the Chateau Erigoye in Bordeaux. A testament to French architecture whilst being in the surrounds of a blushing vineyard. Such beauty, combined with the enigmatic presence of the owner, his children and his surely nuclear powered sheep dog (there were no sheep) Nixie.
"Yeah, nice house, what's the wifi?" I said. The new wife didn't look impressed.
To my shock Aguero had been banned for some reason. YES!! I thought. I love it when he is out, it lets me loose, like a captivated animal sent in to the wild. Bang, be gone from my team, hey while I'm at it, you too Ibra, I had you for a week and you bored me. I then shook the bones of my team, ripped out the skeleton and replaced it with something completely made of jelly.
    2 * 4m keepers.
I put Smith in, who after never getting any attacking, well, anything, got a CS (now that's just luck), assist and all 3 bonus. Cazorla, Antonio, Wilson and Lukaku.
KDB was so tempting over Hazard but Sterling was such good value, even with the extra money I had. Costa vs Rooney was so tough, and in hindsight, I was a bit silly. But there you go.
The captain decision was all that was left. I sat down and enjoyed a fresh white from the vineyard I had nestled my toes in to, and could hear the children laughing at a film I remembered from my childhood, Dennis. The TV blared out, Wilsoooooonn, and that was it, forget my beloved Monday night option; I'm going with fate. Wilson it was. Not entirely to be, but with a Smith 11 pointer, a 94th minute penalty from Cazorla, a couple of goals from Antonio and a what, what's that, an 11 minute hat trick from a chap with no form in the last game of the week?

I didn't find out most of this until tuesday as I was completely bed ridden from food poisoning, hence me be on during what's meant to be the most romantic couple of weeks of my life.

A total of 70 points without so much as a left back cross completion comparison.

Sometimes a good break, no info, and a good old fashioned go against the grain gut can do you wonders.

    Side note.

The squits. Like Arnoutovic, it's explosive, comes in squirts but you don't want it for very long.

    Horse.

Cechs will remain number one choice in the league, that hasn't changed. However the superb performance from Ospina last night has changed matters to a large degree. Cech now has to perform, as Ospina is now a threat to his spot.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Aguero re hiring plans

On last night's Scoutcast Mark and I put forward contrasting solutions to drafting Aguero back in and still being able to have a credible team.

His solution was to ditch Ibrahimovic, captain Aguero most weeks and spread the saved money across defence and midfield.

My solution was to have both Aguero and Ibrahimovic and opt for a 5.5-6.0 4th midfielder, and also spread the saved cash among the other places.

Which solution do you favour and why?

    Is Ibrahimovic surplus to requirements?
Or is their value in the 5.5 bracket?

Just to add that while my current 5.5 player is Puncheon I plan to alter this around fixtures...with Snodgrass and Fer on my radar in future Gameweeks.

I'll ammend. 6.0 options included too. So yes, Bolasie very much on the radar. Thin 6.0 is the limit though to get a credible squad with Ibra and Aguero.

Indeed, although my situation is a little different, with 4 at the back, but I still need a 5.5-6.0 mid to afford some combination of Sanchez/Ozil/Hazard/Firmino/Antonio/Mane in the other 3 spots. Kun and Ibra up top.

It's not the 5.5/6 mids that is the issue for me, it's not having the likes of Ozil/Firmino/Mane/Payet type players

Ibrahimovic Aguero Benteke would only allow me to get 1 Big hitter Hazard/Sanchez at a push so I'm leaning towards dropping Ibrahimovic as unlikely captain him anyway.

By the same logic Mirallas, Barkley etc are going to start scoring you shouldn't buy Lukaku , Alli , Eriksen and Lamela are going to take points off of Kane , Hazard and Willian are going to take points off of Costa, KDB , Sterling etc are going to take points off of Aguero .

        2. Still Unsure
            7 years, 7 months ago

I think it's also that Mourinho teams are predominantly defensive. He'll revert to type soon IMO and then there will be less goals on that team to spread about anyway.
Not saying I'm dropping Ibra, but I don't think he's a season keeper either.

I was initially planning to get rid of Ozil, but I could be more tempted to get rid of Hazard. My sacrificial striker is Costa, I also have money in Bellerin and Toby that could be freed up to get Kun. Lots of options. I'll have Kun and Ibra in a 442.

At the moment I am fine without Ibra, well Kun too for that matter. But I like a gamble. I can see Kane and Lukaku tearing up with Benteke adding great value. With the likes of Wilson and the Watford boys vying for my attention too.
This isn't to say that I'm ignoring them for the sake of it. I'll keep the cash spare in case Kun comes back with a bang.

Probably following you down the 5.5 mid route with Snoddy though unless Lukaku bangs in another brace and I need to keep him, meaning Benteke leaves the team and Capoue may become 4th mid.

My initial plan was to transfer out Lukaku for Aguero next week, but now I'm not so sure. Will probably do Sterling+Hazard+Benteke to Snodgrass+Lallana+Aguero. Would leave me with a front 7 of Aguero/Ibra/Lukaku/Sanchez/Antonio/Lallana/Snodgrass. Is that a credible front 7? Would definitely like Mane instead of Lallana and I'd also like to upgrade my defense, but perhaps that has to wait until either Ibra or Lukaku have tough fixtures/bad form?

Hmmm...there's too many quality milfs around that will outperform the 5-6 mill milfs. I mean there's three from ARS for starters, gawd knows how many from Liverpud and you have your Hazzards, Mahrezes, Siggys, et al.

Can Lukaku replace Ibra is my big Q.

Aguero fit will be in, but I am going without ibra, that money opens up too many options. No reason why Kane cannot get another 20 goals, vardy, Costa, lukaku. And if the money is used on the 4th mid, you get good options in firmino, mane, eriksen, alli, sterling, mahrez.

Both trains are thoughts are understandable. I think it will be close to an even split in terms of what FFS players do - although I think a large % of FPL players will keep Ibrahimovic.

I personally prefer a big midfielder so may opt for the Ibrahimovic downgrade. I prefer Firmino/Mane + Lukaku to Snodgrass + Ibrahimovic.

Aguero is the standout captain most weeks anyway. And Hazard is another. I'm sure many can captain Benteke/Lukaku/Mane/Firmino too.

My plan is to temporarily go without Hazard and opt for Costa instead over Chelsea's tougher fixtures with an easy 2 transfer move to get Haz back later as required.

This might not make much sense without going into detail with my squad, but doing the above allows me to have both Ibra and Kun, as well as at least one player from each big 4 team as well as an attacker from WH and EVE over their kind fixtures.

I think it gives me just the right balance of premos, back up cast members and excellent fixtures.

Happy to share my team if people really care to see what I'm on about? 😉

Swans and Spurs are two of Kun's favourite teams to play. Straight back in for me, but keeping Ibra.

Unlike Kun, Ibra is unlikely to get injured, I don't want him out of my team all season and he'll be invaluable around Christmas. So I want to keep him in at 11.5.

He doesn't matter to me yet.

As always i'm not bothered about OR I simply play against two other people...my brother and son....I only have to work out if they will bring him back in or not. Until that time I don't really mind how many points he gets.

I'm currently 14 pts ahead of my son and 32 pts ahead of my brother....so I have room for a (-8) if needed.

Why not go lower than 5.5? I'm going to wildcard GW6 and part of my plan is to play Capoue as my 4th mid for his tasty fixtures (it's hurt having all of his points on my bench so far...). That will allow me to switch Redmond for another 4.5 bench fodder mid and have Aguero, Ibra, Lukaku up front. The midfield would be Hazard, Firmino, Antonia, Capoue, which seems strong at least for the next few weeks. My only worries are getting rid of Arsenal attacking coverage (currently Ozil) to accommodate the beast front 3, and also a slightly week defence (no Tottenham or Arsenal).

However I would have the flexibility to downgrade Lukaku at any point in order to upgrade the 5th mid and play 3-5-2, or upgrade the defence.

You must have a cheap defence to do that. I tried for my side and I'm 3.5 left for a mid.

Defence is Foster/Jaku; Shaw, Stones, Friend, Kone, Amat. Depending on price changes between now and my wildcard I may need to find 0.1 from somewhere, but it should fit. My concern is a lack of Arsenal/Spurs defence and no way of bringing them in.

It's def one of those 2, or just delay the plan to bring Aguero back in. Ozil to Cazorla and Ibra to Aguero could be a good option but didn't like the performance of Ozil and Cazorla, will monitor again this weekend.

I have a plan! Cue freak injury/red card.

        GW 4-5: Save transfer

GW 5-6: Ozil & Sterling —> Cazorla and Firmino (no City vs Swans.... eeeek.)

        GW 6-7: Save transfer

GW 7-8: Lukaku & Benteke —> Aguero and Diomande (3-5-2 with Capoue as starter)

Going to hold off on Aguero for a few weeks and hope Swansea don't get battered... Spurs away will be low scoring in my view, Aguero could blank in that... but then his run is too good to ignore.

Im on my wc after a disastrous 25 point gw and i think i'm very likely to go both ibra and aggy less and do you know what, it feels damn good! I am sick of being held hostage by aguero and now ibra and the fun was being sucked out of the game for me trying to build a team around them and one of haz/sanch in mid etc.

Ditching them, my team looks loads better and I feel enthused again!

End of the day you can only cap one of Ibra/Aggy so as long as the cash saved on one of them can be spent elsewhere one one maybe two better players who will hopefully make up the 5-10 points you may lose out on from Ibra for example.

That said, i'm going without both of them and spreading the cash around the whole team.

It'll work or it won't. Live by the sword, die by the sword!

Ibra is expendable (wat, LEI, STO, liv, che, BUR) is what my gut says. None of the fixtures shout out that a rout (I think Stoke will find their feet soon enough) is in the offing and I'm hoping he doesn't score more than a goal a game in these games.

Kun has 2 away games (with another CL away in between) on his return from suspension followed by internationals. My plan currently is Kane for SUN,mid and switch to Costa for hul, LEI and then finally to Aguero for SOU, wba. Allows me to monitor Kun till post Barcelona and then can take a call on him with fixtures for Arsenal and Everton turning tough making an easy swap with Sanchez enablers.

As said somebody else pointed out, this season will be about getting the right players in at the right time and Aguero looks essential in November and Ibra in December.

Have Deeney, Pereyra and Capoue for when Watford's fixtures turn next week so only question for me is:
        A) Keep Costa & Sanchez
        B) Costa -> Aguero and downgrade Sanchez.

Have Ibra, Captain this week as Oliver always gives penalties against Watford. If that's not bad enough Stuart "I gave ghost goal for Reading because I'm a Luton Fan" Attwell is 4th official.

I have prepared my team so that I can go to Agu-ibra-haz with 2FT or drop Ibra for agu with 1FT. Not 100% decided yet, it depends totally on Lukaku, might want to keep him, then Ibra will have to go and the funds be used to upgrade midfield. Or bigger surgery than 2FT would allow will have to be done. Still very much undecided, saving FT this week for sure though.

I was pretty convinced that Ibra would not be a season keeper even though I was sure that my fellow Swede would preform good. Just was not sure he would produce enough points to justify the outlay of resources he demands on us FPL managers . That in addition to that he is somewhat prone to missing a few games here and there due to hamstring problems or knocks.

Both aguero AND ibra, with big price tags and coming and going problems that makes them miss matches just felt to much to bare. But Ibras start to the season shows that he at least until now clearly has been worth his price. The future will tell if that still stands in a few months, atm I have now idea if he'll be in my team for the season or just one or a few more weeks

        I've wildcard this week and moved on a few players and ended up with this attack;

        Hazard Firmino Antonio Capoue
        Costa(+3.2m) Ibra Benteke

I've got Townsend out for Antonio, and covered this with Benteke in for Gray. I started with Firmino and am happy to keep him now. Capoue you either play him every week or don't have him for me so he's in as an enabler. Watford's fixtures turn soon. Already gone up 0.1m as has Antonio. I have the exact money for this team with a decent defence so had to wildcard to get it!

if the aguero enablers {costa kane lukaku sanchez haz etc} are still in form, then people will have a dilemma to out 2 in form players for kun and a cheaper mid.,it depends if you have got/ want ibra , and want kun to. i will be happy with just kun back at the moment.
i will be bringing kun back in as was my plan, haz or sanchez to ?
costa to kun. {no ibra} decisions ! good luck all

Very tempted to get Aguero in for Ibrahimovic for the Swansea game, then transfer Ibrahimovic back in for Aguero and captain him against Stoke and Liverpool. Aguero can come back in for Southampton game and onwards. I have Benteke and Lukaku as well and think they'll be too good value to get rid of. Don't think there is a need to have both Manchester strikers in the side when other strikers are performing well. Lukaku especially has shown his explosive capabilities.

I could be wrong here so someone please correct me if I am, but I vaguely recall this fixture historically having a lot of pens award in the past?

For this reason I would keep Hazard for this gw in hope that he is still on pens and not sharing them.

Even if my memory's not correct, this is always a fiery contest and with Costa wrestling in the box and the new holding laws in effect, this game could see a few pens in it anyway.

A few reds probably too. 😉

There's this lad in my mini league that always seems to have luck after the final game I don't know how he does it. I'm always at the top buh after the final whistle of the GW I find him above me. He was crashing at 11 points b4 everton match and ended up with 45 thanks to lukaku(c). Which shows how mad and unpredictable FPL is. Hope I beat him this GW

before the final match of each gameweek starts, check his team and the players he has left to play. Put a small monetary bet (via your favourite betting website) on that player to score.

        Win-win situation.

      Advice please -

      GW5 Team currently -

      Foster
      Valencia / Stones / Fuchs*
      Hazard / Firmino / Ozil / Redmond *
      Lukaku / Zlatan / Rondon*

      Bench - Jaku / Capoue / Pieters / Friend

      1FT, 0.9 ITB, WC Available

I have Fuchs, Redmond and Rondon, all of which I don't want in my team long term, but they all have good fixtures this week. I really want Antonio but would need a hit to do Redmond > Antonio

      Current thoughts -
      A) Rondon > Ihaenacho (Will WC next week if I do this)
      B) Fuchs > Williams
      C) Fuchs & Redmond > Williams & Antonio (-4)

I'm thinking about Wildcarding GW6 but not sure just yet, my defence needs an overhaul and need to think about how I'm going to fit Kun back in

Love how people keep saying Cazorla can't rely on penalties every week, yet since he joined Arsenal he has made more assists than any other player in the league bar Silva (And was out for most of last season)

He went straight in my WC team last week. A decent, nailed Arsenal mid for cheap who has pinched some set pieces and pens.

But that's because he's been in the league for ages. I'm sure if you go by assists per 90, a more relevant metric, the likes of KDB/Payet/Ozil take Cazorla to the barbers.
