Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 7

Monday morning sees the launch of our latest captain poll, canvassing your opinion on the likely favourites and differential options for the armband in Gameweek 7.

Sergio Aguero (13.0) returned from a three-match suspension in style in Gameweek 6 with two goals and maximum Fantasy Premier League bonus points away to Swansea, to reward the 45% in our Captain Poll who backed him with the armband.

Even though the 37.2% owned Manchester City striker faces a far tougher test this weekend at Tottenham Hotspur, it would be no surprise to see him tussle at the top of this week’s poll as well.

The omens are certainly in his favour – Aguero has ten goals from nine appearances against Spurs.

Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.6) will likely be challenging Aguero at the top of the poll, after finishing a distance second to the Argentine in Gameweek 6.

A strong home fixture against a Stoke City side that has conceded 15 times this term, coupled with impressive underlying statistics, offer the big Swede a strong case for selection.

No other player has had more goal attempts than the 55.8% owned striker but interest may be tempered by his failure to register returns from the impressive 4-1 victory over Leicester City at Old Trafford on Saturday.

His cut price team-mate Marcus Rashford (6.9) did manage to score against the Foxes, taking his taking to three goals in four Gameweeks. With more than 71,000 new FPL owners so far this week, he is also expected to garner captaincy interest.

Romeu Lukaku (9.3) will also be in the frame. Like Ibrahimovic, the 19.4% owned striker also blanked in Gameweek 6 as Everton slipped to a reverse at Bournemouth. But his Gameweek 7 opponents Crystal Palace have yet to chalk up a clean sheet ahead of Friday’s trip to Goodison Park.

Arsenal’s Alexis Sanchez has three double-digit FPL scores already this season and he looks an potentially effective differential captaincy option. With three goals and two assists in his last two road trips, it is little wonder that the Chilean has attracted more than 76,000 new managers ahead of the Gunners’ visit to Burnley this weekend.

The midfielders minefield at Liverpool is set to split the vote among their key contenders. Sadio Mane (9.0), the 30.3% owned Philippe Coutinho (8.2) and Adam Lallana (11.3) all offer solid options for the armband when they visit a Swansea City outfit that has conceded seven times across their three home fixtures this season. All three of this midfield trio scored at home to Hull City at the weekend to further boost their case.

Although their team-mate Roberto Firmino (8.4) failed to register any attacking returns against the Tigers, the 9.9% owned Brazilian’s strong underlying numbers, including topping Liverpool’s chance creation table this season, should give those keeping faith a degree of confidence. .

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

I wouldn't, not with Watfords form, fixtures and a home match against Bournemouth up next + Deeney is on pens. Rashford may still have his minutes managed.

Doesn't really matter who Aguero plays against, the man is a goal machine. He'll be my captain although Zlatan, Costa and Sanchez could all be good alternatives.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Is GWK 7 the week not to captain Aguero?

With Ibrahimovic topping the goal attempt table and facing Stoke, with Sanchez looking to add to his impressive away record at Burnley and with Lukaku up against Palace's porous backline is GWK 7 the week not to captain Aguero - who travels to Spurs.

I kept Ibrahimovic to captain him vs Stoke.

He looked good against Leicester he had a good game and on another day he scores double figures.

The advantage of his captaincy this week comes at what looks like the trade off of lost value.

Take it as a positive, the best captaincy option this week is becoming more differential by the day.

Stay strong and drive home the advantage.

Aguero hasn't scored against Pochettino yet. Spurs defence one of the best in the leagues.

Could work. Still expect Kun to notch one atleast mind.

I can see Kun scoring, but I think Ibra has a giant haul in him at some point this year, and this may be it.

KDB out could also stifle City, and Spurs are the best defence in the league.

Beat me to it Jonty 🙂 (check below). I agree 100%. This season it would be a mistake to just keep the armband on Kun every week regardless of the fixture. Every week we are getting double figure scores from a big part of the heavy hitters. This is the danger of having Kun. You are tempted to captain him every week. But he isn't the standout player in fpl this year. So many others are matching him. Then there is the KDB injury which I think will affect City very much.

      1. Still Unsure
          7 years, 7 months ago

You're half right in that there are lots of good options about getting double figure hauls.
But Aguero IS still the standout player in FPL.

Aguero is in red-hot form, 11 goals in 6 games.

He has 10 goals and 2 assists in 9 games against Spurs including 4 in one game 2 years ago. That was also in October and also when he was in the middle of a scoring run, although that game was at the Etihad. The only team he has scored more against is Newcastle (in more games).

Spurs are a fairly tight defence but Burnley are also pretty resilient at Turf Moor, that's not an easy away game for any team (as Liverpool found). The last time Burnley conceded more than 1 goal in a home game was 10 months ago.

In short, I can't see this as the week to prefer Sanchez to Aguero.

I have both and kept Ibra on my wildcard with the intention of making him captain this week. He was unlucky not to return points last time out, it must surely be coming soon.

I think Hazard may perform this week too away at Hull. This could be a real week to upset the applecart if both these highly sold players return this week...! 🙂

Doesn't Kun usually pick up an injury early season with those dodgy hamstrings? Just throwing that into the mix. Suddenly I'm thinking Ibrahimovic has the armband this week, gut feeling and all that.

Ibrahimovic is leading the most goal attempts stats this season with 32 goal attempts, 19 shots inside the box (first) and 9 of those were on target (4th)

And he is against the 2nd weakest defense in the league

And he is against Shay Given!

Who is crazy enough to ignore that and not give him the armband? 😉

Captain poll seems completely wrong to me. Kun might be essential, but this season sticking it on him every GW just won't cut it with most premium options delivering consistently. Ibra, Sanchez, Mane, Coutinho and even Costa are all better options this week. Add to that the tough game at WHL against the league's best defense and KDB, their chief ceator, being out. i think Kun is a terrible pick for captain this week. City may have coped without Kun because they had an able deputy in Nacho. They do not have a replacement for KDB though. His creativity and energy will be missed. Silva alone will struggle against Spurs high pressing and physcial game.

Yeah I will never captain(and have never captained) him away to big sides
He may score but its not logical when you have better choises

I think they will lose points too. I didn't think they were particularly impressive against Swansea. The penalty was a bit harsh.

I voted for Ibra. But I may captain Aguero. I think stat wise and fixture wise Ibra is the best choice, followed by Sanchez, Lukaku then Aguero.

Just wanted to give you a big thank you. Your assist imminent table made me pick Milner as a 2 week punt 😉 Got me a sweet 14pts. Will definitely mention it in Rough and the Smooth 🙂

I am between Ibra and Lukaku. My worry with ibra is that I don't have a good history with early kickoff captains whereas I have a very good one with late night matches. Its a myth I know. Both seem good options.

Lanzini will probably lose his place right?
Should I do Masuaku + Lanzini to Watford def + Snoddy/Perreira for -4?

Taking a hit to swap Tadic for Antonio was my frustration of the week.

But hey guys! Didn't Kane's little reemergance fit perfectly over Aguero's time on the naughty step? Even getting injured to avoid us thinking for ine second that we'd keep him on instead of getting our regular hero back.

      That was all very neat.

Love how the scout added a picture of Rashford to the article.

Bricking it after the sale maybe?

Ibra was a 29% winner of the overall captain statistic last week even with Aguero romping away with it on the poll on here, wonder what he will be this week.

Morning gents. All set for next Gw? 0.1m in bank.

      Foster
      Valencia Williams Evans
      Sanchez Sterling Antonio Capoue
      Aguero Ibra Lukaku

      Jaku Amat Fletcher Lenihan

Not sure who to captain between Kun / Ibra / Sanchez ...

Prefer Walcott for similar price. Obviously Sanchez is the ideal cover if you can afford.

      Valencia, Bellerin, Baines
      Sanchez, Sterling, Antonio, Snodgrass, Firmino

It' means I either get rid of Lukaku or Ighalo for a (-4)

I played AOA in the end. Ozil was indeed on the bench, then I thought about transferring him for a hit - but his home stats came out better than Sterling away (and proved correct too).

Even if Capoue does nothing its the Ozil potential benching that marks this as my first AOA success. Baines and Collins no shows also made it a necessity this week - although I didn't know it at the time.

Its a rubbish chip - but this was definitely one of the best weeks for me to play it.
