Scout Notes – Champions League – Tuesday

Another Heung-Min Son goal for Spurs and an Islam Slimani strike for Leicester help both sides to Champions League victory on a night when English football is pre-occupied with other news.

CSKA Moscow 0 Tottenham 1

Heung-Min Son (7.5) scored his fifth goal in as many matches to help an under-strength Spurs make relatively light work of a tough trip to Moscow.

Son was set up by Erik Lamela (6.9) as the pair continued their fine starts to the season – with 37 and 22 FPL points respectively, they are the club’s highest-scoring midfielders. Lamela, however, has failed to start any of the last three league matches.

Spurs were unlucky not to win by more – Dele Alli (8.3) hit the bar and they outshot their hosts by 22 attempts to nine – but Vincent Janssen (7.8) again failed to turn industry into goals.

Mauricio Pochettino made two changes to his line-up.

Injuries meant Lamela replaced Moussa Sissoko (6.9) and Ben Davies (4.9) again started for Danny Rose (5.9), while Kieran Trippier (4.8) started at right-back as the 33.6%-owned Kyle Walker (5.9) was handed a rest ahead of Sunday’s top of the table clash with Man City.

Life without Harry Kane – and a further four first-teamers currently injured – seems to be bringing out the best in Tottenham’s midfielders.

Intriguingly, the Spurs boss changed tactics, opting for a 4-1-4-1 to accomodate Lamela, Alli, Christian Eriksen (8.3m) and Son in the midfield spots behind Janssen.

Pochettino introduced Georges-Kevin Nkoudou (6.9) for Janssen in the second-half and his direct running and pace troubled a tiring Moscow defence.

The move also freed Son to play through the middle and his goal came not long afterwards, to the delight of his Will Grigg-channeling boss.

“I feel very pleased for Sonny. He is on fire and to keep this form is very important for us.””

Son, however, went for the lukewarm water approach.

“It is a lucky time – I’ve scored a lot of goals. I try to score every time and help my teammates. I thought I should have scored a second goal – it was a a great chance but everyone is happy.”

Son has been acquired by over 82,000 new FPL owners at the time of writing but is still set to go into Sunday’s clash with City found in less than 4% of squads.

Tottenham XI: Lloris, Trippier, Alderweireld, Vertonghen, Davies, Wanyama, Lamela, Eriksen, Alli (Winks 82), Son, Janssen (Nkoudou 67).
Subs not used: Vorm, Walker, Onomah, Wimmer, Carter-Vickers.

Leicester City 1 Porto 0

Leicester continued to save last season’s form for the Champions League, battling to a tight win over seasoned European campaigners Porto.

Islam Slimani (8.5) made a habit of scoring against Porto for former club Sporting Lisbon, and he kept it going at The King Power, heading home from a Riyad Mahrez (9.3) cross.

Slimani now has three goals from as many starts for Leicester. His partnership with Jamie Vardy (9.8) is still developing, but not so far to the benefit of the Englishman, who has drawn three blanks.

Claudio Ranieri made two changes from the 4-1 mauling in Manchester. Kasper Schmeichel (5.0) returned from a groin injury and Luis Hernandez (4.4) replaced Danny Simpson (5.0) at right-back. The Spaniard added defensive solidity to a back four that continues to be tight at home but porous away. He also has that handy long-throw.

But it was the centre-half partnership of Robert Huth and Wes Morgan (both 5.0) who caught the eye, repelling Porto’s late rally.

Ranieri was happy to take some of the credit for the win post-match.

“I spoke with Riyad and Islam and said ‘come on guys, make something good tonight’. They made the pass and scored the goal, after that we defended very well. We played with our spirit tonight.”

A home encounter with an in-form Southampton on Sunday will be a solid test of whether ‘our spirit’ can return on a more consistent basis.

It is worth noting that Leicester have chalked up a clean sheet in three of five home matches across all competitions this season and host the Saints, West Brom, Palace and Middlesbrough in their next four at the King Power.

Leicester City XI: Schmeichel, Hernandez, Morgan, Huth, Fuchs, Mahrez (Gray 88), Drinkwater, Amartey, Albrighton, Slimani (King 82), Vardy (Musa).
Subs not used: Zieler, Schlupp, Simpson, Okazaki.

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

Third strikers gathered lots of interest on last night's Scoutcast. Defoe, Deeney and Benteke were among those in the frame.

Who is your preferred third striker over the next four gameweeks or so and why?

And who, like me, is considering doubling up on the likes of Defoe and Benteke to divert money into the mega point midfield.

Zlatan to Defoe is on the cards after internationals.

I went with Janssen on WC last week. Kane will be back soon so I'll probably keep till then. Apart from City Spurs' fixtures are still good.

More like a 2 week punt on Spurs game? Cause they have Arsenal, West ham and another tough team fixtures upcoming.

          After City they have:

wba bou LEI ars WHU che

I'd only worry about Arsenal for defensive returns. Though, like I say Kane should be back soon so the Janssen punt won't last long. I'm not really too confident about it anymore either tbh

So more like a 2 week punt. I am looking at Spurs only from the attacking point not the defensive aspect. I would not want to keep a Spurs player to play him 1 game (West Ham) out of the 3 tough games (Arsenal, West ham and Chelsea)

West Ham is one of the easiest fixtures attacking-wise. They were not good defensively last year so even if Bilic manages to turn things around they'll still ship goals.

True. But Deeney has a better fixture this week. I'm looking at two 7m strikers with Aguero so I can always chop & change. Deeney & Defoe for me.

I sacrificed Defoe to get Aguero last week whilst keeping hold of Benteke.

Have a horrible feeling I lost the wrong player but I'm not spending a transfer on that this week, Benteke has done enough to stay put for now.

Rashofrd, because I believe he's going to get a good run in the starting 11, he's on great form and will undoubtedly score goals and rise in price

I'm keeping Kun and Lukaku for now with Rashford as I believe Lukakku and Everton under Koeman have improved signnificantly this season and that he's finally going to relinquish his Trollaku status from previous seasons.

      What about Austin, Jonty?

Currently I have Benteke, but I was thinking of replacing him with Austin from gameweek 11 when Southampton’s fixtures turn good.

If Rashford cements a place in the United team prior to that, I would probably get him in instead. United’s fixtures from gameweek 16 look very promising.

      Sound plan?

I like the look of Llorente long term. Think he's going to do well, and Swans are generally a very steady team selection-wise which helps over Christmas. That said, Guidolin could go if they get smashed by Pool, so I'll be holding fire.

I started with two mid pricers (Long and Gray, how long ago it seems) and immediately regretted it, so won't be doing that again.

This week I have brought in Rashford as I think he has the biggest upside while he keeps his place and his price could explode.

Jermain! He'll hit 150 Premier League goals this season. When the form and fixtures get tough, the veteran goalscorers can still bring in the points.

Ok, this should be fun then, lets explore the maths... 🙂

Currently he has 4 goals in 6 games.
10 hattricks would be 30 goals in 10 games.

That leaves 116 goals in 22 games which would be a little over 5 goals per game in those remaining fixtures.

I'm starting to think I shouldn't have transferred him out 😯

I guess not technically a third striker as a bit pricey but no one is really ever considering slimani. Leicester have some great upcoming home games after the Chelsea game and he's looked sharp and a great addition to the foxes attack. I'm definitely considering him in a couple (game)weeks.

Probably a second striker though unless you're going BIG.

Thoughts on a Sanchez-Walcott double up from GW8-10 (SWA, MID, sun)? Obviously there's a risk Sanchez might be rested for the SWA game. But the double could be fruitful over the 3 weeks. I already own Sanchez. Antonio to Walcott GW8.

I did too. Brought Bony in before GW 6. Stoke's fixtures are amazing from GW 8 to 14. They just need to reset their performance. Shaq is def gonna help with that. Allen (4.8) could be useful aswell (if not only to help the budget).

Stoke has too good players to not soon be getting some wins. Bojan, Shaq, Imbula, Arno...

Who are Heaton (ARS) /Foster (Sun) owners starting this week?

Edging towards Heaton at the moment due to save potential and solid Burnley defence.

That would be logical based on the fixture but the Burnley defence looks well organised, 2 clean sheets already at home this season and I just don't think WBA will keep Sunderland out.

Heaton could easily end up with 6/7 saves.

I know, I know, it's Sanchez... but the stats are so similar, is it worth a hit?

It depends on how confident you are Walcott is going to keep his place. If he does I reckon he's ridiculous value and I'd take him over Sanchez and use the cash elsewhere (or double up).

I'm not sure how nailed on he is long term, but I'm thinking I may want KDB back when he's fit again so maybe it's not worth a hit for Sanchez if Walcott's stats are practically identical at the moment. Maybe I'll just go with Walcott for now and reassess over the international break.

FPL legend Walcott, as nailed on as he has been for years, currently averaging 6ppg for an in form Arsenal with Burnley up next and Mark has the audacity to pick him as a Desert Island Risk? Truly outrageous.

At least he had the decency to realise he was taking the proverbial even as he did so.

I only did it so we brought him up. Realised late on that we'd missed discussing him and wanted to give the Community Article a mention. I risked GW's wrath in doing so but it was a gamble worth taking 😉

Nearly mentioned that. Under different circumstances Willian would have been on the cusp but Chelsea are stuttering and Willian has done little so far so fine by me. Rather enjoying being appointed the moral arbiter for the risks by dint of whinging the most about them 🙂

To be clear though, Andy nailed the brief - Downing is wonderfully risky.

Urgh, just when I thought my decision was made, Leicester go and tighten up 🙁

    From gw9:

Clyne or Fuchs? (or just keep Valencia?)

Clyne is producing good stats but without much output in terms of points. He's on my watchlist, but I'm keeping Valencia for now.

I'm (maybe stupidly) not really considering Leicester defence as they're a bit Jekyll and Hyde at the moment.

I think you guys are really overestimating Leicester's defence this season. Inhad Morgan and thank goodness I got rid.

I wouldn't touch Leicester's defence until Mendy is back. Also 2 games in the UCL isnt a solid sample size

    Current team

    Heaton
    McAuley-Valencia-Baines
    Firminho-Antonio-Sterling-Capoue-(Barry)
    Kun-Zlatan-Lukaku

Really want Sanchez in, and was thinking

    Barry--Sanchez
    Zlatan--Rashford
    Lukaku-Benteke

Worth it for an 8 minus or give Zlatan another game?

I have an almost identical same team (Snodgrass not Barry, Foster not Heaton). And I want Sanchez.

Was considering Ibra, Snodgrass, McAuley - Rashford, Sanchez, 4mDef for a -8. But decided against it.

You'll want Ibra against Stoke and 2ft for the international break. Hold tight, and hide behind the sofa when Arsenal play Burnley.

      Ibra (C) for me.
