The Burning Question – Is it time to spend in defence?

With Spurs registering a fourth clean sheet and Laurent Koscielny making his move as the go-to Fantasy Premier League defender, suddenly there’s a suggestion it’s time to re-assess our back line options.

Having settled on defences largely populated by mid-price and budget options, is it now time to re-align our sights and investigate the defensive heavy-hitters?

We posed that Burning Question to a cast of Fantasy Football Scout contributors…

Paul says…

Over the years, the strategy of investing in budget assets at the back and splashing the cash in attack is a tried and tested one.

Arguably, though, this season has handed us more options than ever before.

The emergence of great value picks in midfield may well allow us to strengthen in defence a little earlier than we typically tend to.

Yes, Alexis Sanchez has had a great start to the season, but he’s only seven points clear of Theo Walcott and 3.6 more expensive.

Walcott, along with Heung-Min Son and Michail Antonio have equalled or bettered all but one forward (Diego Costa) thus far.

All three are under 8.0.

Throw in Liverpool’s ridiculously good schedule from Gameweek 9-18 and one or both of Roberto Firmino and Philippe Coutinho look very enticing, having both averaged more than six points per match so far.

That pair are priced under 8.5, while in-form team-mates James Milner and Adam Lallana are even cheaper.

Sergio Aguero will remain my go-to premium attacker but by focusing on value for money elsewhere – and forgoing pricey picks such as Sanchez and Zlatan Ibrahimovic – there seems to be significant scope to invest in pricier rearguards.

Spurs and Arsenal have looked solid at the back, with the Gunners’ acquisition of Shkodran Mustafi looking a great piece of business.

With both Man City and Leicester offering first-team regulars at 5.0 ahead of some excellent upcoming schedules, shopping outside of the budget bracket seems more viable than ever.

Dufflinks aka Simon March 2014/15 FPL Champion says….

You’d have to search hard to find a compelling reason to invest in defence based on the opening seven Gameweeks.

Even Tony ‘The Chambermaid’ Pulis looks unable to deliver clean sheets on a regular basis and, while Spurs have probably been the standout team so far in this respect, even they’ve shown themselves susceptible to the odd defensive lapse.

Meanwhile, there seems to be a new outstanding attacking option emerging every Gameweek. No wonder people are shifting their budget into attack.

But this defensive inconsistency isn’t necessarily a new thing.

Clean sheets are notoriously hard to predict early on in the season, but then, at some point, a switch seems to get flicked and, suddenly, the teams that you would typically expect to do well defensively start doing well defensively. According to Fantasy lore, this tends to happen somewhere around the middle of the season.

But this campaign may well be different.

It feels like we’re seeing more penalties and goals from set plays, the presumed catalyst being the new rules penalising contact in the area more harshly. If this isn’t relaxed, or if teams don’t quickly learn to defend better under them, clean sheets and, by extension, defensive points will continue to suffer.

However, there’s also a potential opportunity here as these rules play right into the hands of those defenders with good attacking instincts from set-plays. Standouts in this category include Scott Dann at Crystal Palace, Virgil van Dijk at Southampton and Spurs’ Toby Alderweireld.

However, were I to invest in a premium defender right now, I’d be looking at Koscielny at Arsenal.

He has already notched twice already this season or, the perhaps less-obvious choice, his team-mate Shkodran Mustafi who, while yet to score for the Gunners, had a similar goalscoring record to Koscielny while in Spain.

Arsenal are one of those teams you’d expect to do well defensively and, with a good run of fixtures to come, should that switch get flicked early this year, it could be those two who profit the most.

Jonty says…

I’ve always thought that it is important to spread money across the positions – I often like to have at least two defenders I’m happy to play each week, either because they offer a reliable source of clean sheets or provide attacking potential.

Leighton Baines, Antonio Valencia and most recently Patrick Van Aanholt have all graced my defence with their presence this season, and I’m more than happy to spend a little more to upgrade even further by converting one to an Arsenal’s or Tottenham asset.

The defence has been and continues to be a great way of opting for relatively cheap differentials, as those who drafted in Koscielny ahead of his Gameweek 7 “goal” can testify.

Bonus points are also key to consider when spending big in defence.

Earlier this week I took a look at the bonus magnets so far, including an examination of FPL’s Bonus Point System, which is used to allocate the points.

Only two players, James Milner and Kevin De Bruyne, have better FPL Bonus Point System scores than Daley Blind, who looks an excellent investment at 5.6.

Blind, along with Spurs’ Kyle Walker, are the only defenders to join the likes of Sergio Aguero and Romelu Lukaku in earning seven or more bonus points. Attacking threat, and in Walker’s case, clean sheet potential make them standout picks.

Laurent Koscielny also looks a great option, with solid clean sheet potential over Arsenal’s forthcoming kind run of opponents. However, while he’s proven his attacking potential, in terms of bonus, he will often be overshadowed by team-mates further up the pitch.

Koscielny’s goals shouldn’t cloud our judgement – he won’t score every week, so I’m currently favouring Blind and Walker as the more consistent points scorers in defence.

Andy says…

Big-hitting defenders aren’t something I usually pay attention to until later in the season.

So far in this campaign, my tactic has been the same with Antonio Valencia and Leighton Baines at £5.5m being the highest priced defenders I’ve owned.

With two free transfers going into the international break, however, I have started to look towards both Arsenal and Spurs defence given the number of clean sheets Spurs have registered, coupled with the Gunners’ excellent fixtures.

Big-name defenders rarely offer viable captain options, and they’re not players that rouse excitement but they can bring in a steady stream of points once you include bonus.

I said on the Scoutcast recently that someone like Hector Bellerin at £6.5m could be great value versus a midfielder at the same price. With the fixtures ahead of Arsenal, I can see players like Koscielny and Bellerin bringing in a steady seven to nine points per game, and with their price tags, this has to be something to consider.

For me, the key question surrounds settling on the big-hitters in attack.

It’s difficult to fit in Sergio Aguero, Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Alexis Sanchez while spending in defence. In fact, for my own team, I would likely have to go without both Ibrahimovic and Sanchez to afford the Bellerin option.

That being said, I’m still considering it.

If Theo Walcott can retain his starting spot, I think he can be great value and, coupled with Hector Bellerin, could provide more points than a Sanchez and Jordi Amat combination.

While Bellerin may already be owned by 25% of teams, I would imagine if we scan our mini-leagues, he’s still a differential. And with Swansea City (h), Middlesbrough (h) and Sunderland (a) to come in the next three, he could emerge as a key asset.

Granville says…

Should we be guided by circumstance?

Koscielny actually missed a sitter and would have scored seven points if the laws of football had been applied.

When we isolate clean sheets, there might well be reasons to invest in Arsenal’s defence given upcoming fixtures, but they don’t offer quite the degree of goal threat that other sides do.

No Arsenal defender has more than three attempts at goal and, with that in mind, I would still be concentrating my spend on the Gunners attack.

If I was looking primarily for clean sheets, there are fewer tighter teams this season than Southampton and, with the next four of six at home, they might offer stronger value even if the fixtures are a mixed bag.

Spurs, on the other hand, are currently looking like a defence that can provide points at both ends of the pitch. They’ve claimed four clean sheets and the full-backs have returned three assists and a goal, together with a hatful of bonus points.

Manchester City are playing too open to be considered right now and are error ridden, while rivals United face a tricky run of fixtures.

Liverpool are another side who have four out of six at home, but only Nathaniel Clyne has been ever-present this season.

Statistically, Liverpool have been one of the tightest teams on show in terms of chances conceded, but they’ve suffered through individual errors. If this can be remedied, Clyne is your go-to man as he’s showing potential to score attacking points.

Mark says…

I’m wondering whether I’m being swayed solely by Spurs’ recent form and Koscielny’s output but, yes, I am currently considerably a policy that moves funds into defence.

For me, it’s always a viable tactic to start considering defensive investment as we near the Christmas period. I always feel that the crowded schedule and rest and rotation promotes lower scoring matches and allows the more robust defences to earn points.

It always seems like a spell to grind out results rather than go for the throat and gamble on all-out attacking football.

It means making sacrifices – I’m considering downgrading Etienne Capoue to a rock-bottom fifth midfield option, plus shedding Jermain Defoe to find another million.

Reluctantly, I will likely have to lose either Raheem Sterling or Theo Walcott, or even downgrade Alexis Sanchez.

For now, I want to postpone that decision – particularly while Arsenal’s fixtures suggest the goals will continue to flow.

Toby Alderweireld is my top target. Perhaps not immediately given that he faces four in six away from home but, eventually, he will find his way into my squad.

Koscielny may lead the way right now, but Alderweireld promises to rival his goal count. I also feel that Spurs will continue to flourish as the top defence, ensuring that the Belgian presents exceptional value.

It’s not a question of “if” but rather “when”.

In all likelihood I’ll have other issues to fix over the next month but, if form and injuries allow it, I’ll be manufacturing a move for Alderweireld and deciding where to make the sacrifice.

    Anyone mind a cheeky RMWCT?

    Heaton/Pickford
    Vertonghan/Fuchs/Holebas/Robertson/Amat
    Sanchez/Coutinho/Alli/Walcott/Capoue
    Aguero/Deeney/Benteke

I quite like this, but I have 0.9 ITB so any upgrades you would recommend?

I would drop Capoue to a 4.4 as you will never play him and he is not needed now IMO. I really can't see what you could spend the extra cash on. Could do anything you wanted with. All these picks are good shouts.

                    Good advice about Capoue.

Turn Fuchs into Mustafi with the cash?

I'm also not convinced Alli is worth the cash. Would be tempted by Sterling instead.

Asking for a friend as his team is a mess, used their WC and has a team value of £99.5m, 1 FT £0m in the bank:

        Jaku Pope
        Valencia Shaw* Evans Zuniga Pieters
        Sanchez Coutinho Sterling Snodgrass Fletcher
        Aguero Lukaku Long

I've suggested a -8 to sort out GK, downgrade Shaw and sort out Long but his budget isnt very forgiving

        Pickford/de Gea
        Williams Walker Kone Holebas McAuley
        Sanchez Antonio Son Puncheon Bolasie
        Aguero Ibra Diomande

So, for the next 2 GW I want to trade de Gea for Karius and then Williams for Mustafi. This will leave me with exactly 0 in the bank. Then the fun begins. Should I:
        1) Downgrade Sanchez to Walcott and use the funds to upgrade Bolasie and Puncheon
        2) Downgrade Ibra and do the same thing

I was thinking, if I sell Ibra I would bring in Mata and Lallana. If I sell Sanchez, I would bring in Walcott and Lallana or Firmino.

Alternatively, I could also downgrade Bolasie to Allen (state of injury pending) which I could then use to either upgrade Puncheon or upgrade Antonio.

It is all so confusing! Any thoughts?

I have been pondering the Spurs defence for a while now and I have a few questions re which is the best option.

        Toby Alderweireld

I always presumed Toby was the star man but looking at it closer he seems to need attacking contributions to earn bonus points. Is there a reason why he seems to be allergic to bonus points? Last season he got 4 goals and 3 assists with 13 cs on the way to 166pt total or 4.37ppg (16 bonus points with 13 cs and 7 attacking contributions). I think Spurs look more solid this year and if anything were unfortunate to get only 13 cs last season so an extra 4 cs or so could put Toby up to 175+ pts total for 6.5m. He averaged 90 minutes per chance last season.

The question with him is can he up his BPS numbers and can he repeat his attacking output this season considering he only had 1 goal and zero assists the previous season? Personally I think he may regress a bit this season on the attacking front.

        Jan Vertonghen

Jan was a goal and assist machine before his injury in 2013 with 5 goals and 3 assists in that season. He managed 7 bonus points from 9 clean sheets on the way to a total of 87pts in 2594 minutes last season (29 games and 3ppg) with zero attacking contribution. He averaged 248 minutes per chance last season.

The question is where has his goal threat gone and is there any way it could reappear? Personally I think he will get some attacking points this season but unless he ups his attempts I don't think it will be much more.

        Danny Rose

Danny chipped in with a rather disappointing 1 goal last season but did also chip in with 7 assists from a meager 2129 minutes. With his attacking stats he should have chipped in with more goals and his tally of three from the season before looks more representative of what he should be delivering. His points total last season was 109 from 24 appearances (4.54ppg). He managed an attempt every 86 minutes last season.

The question with Rose is will he get more minutes this season and is Davies going to take minutes off him due to rotation? A lot of these fast players seem to get a spell in their careers where the injuries dry up, maybe this could be Rose's year?

        Kyle Walker

Walker had a decent season last year with 1 goal, 3 assists and 8 bonus points being better than his 1 assist the previous season. To date this season though he has two assists and has manged 7 bonus points already. He managed last seasons total of 121 points in 33 appearances (3.67 ppg) and managed an effort at goal every 147 minutes.

The big question with Walker is can he maintain his BPS numbers and will he improve his attacking output or has his early season form being a blip? Personally I think he is a solid option but I wouldn't bank on too many attacking pts from him.

Conclusion: I think I am leaning towards Rose as being the best option if I am going for a Spurs defender as his attacking potential seems to be better than the other 3 as well as his ppg and since we are not locking in for the whole season if he does get injured we can always transfer out again.

Who is the best Spurs defencive option in your opinion?

I will be going with Rose maybe but Rotation of FBs during CL is putting me off.

One if the full backs. I opted for Bellerin over Koscielny recently and although I was laughing in the Chelsea game I was let down last week. I believe the same thing will happen between Spurs fullbacks and Alderweireld

Toby's been unlucky not to score 2/3 goals already. Expect him to match last years returns eventually. I'll definitely be owning from GW 16.

I love Toby but the BPS number really disappoint for a 6.5m defender. If he doesn't get 4 or 5 goals in the season he will be really struggling for bonus. For example last season he would probably only have scored circa 120 pts if he had only scored one goal. I think for 6.5m you need more chance of bonus when you team gets a cs as attacking returns for cbs are notoriously volatile.

Those ppg though? Unless he can boost his attacking output I can't see him being an option. You can get 3ppg for a lot less money.

Yes. That's why I wouldn't have any Spurs defender at all till GW14/16. But if I had to have one, Vertonghen would be the least worst option.

rose the best for me too. whilst it's annoying when davies gets a start at least it seems to be 90mins or 0 with rose. he is a bit fond of a card which isn't ideal but he's such a menace going forward, more relentless than walker imo.

toby will score 4+ goals again this season imo. his rather simple but incredibly logical tactic of running along rather than towards the goal from corners works wonders. i'm amazed everyone doesn't do it

Well if you have Toby on 4+ goals in 31 games then he'll be worth the extra over rose due to the durability factor imo. I wouldn't be as confident as he is undoubtedly marked as a threat now after last seasons exploits so he is getting extra attention.

He has just scored for Belgium, though (An great backheel goal from a corner, btw.) and is a constant threat in the penalty area during set pieces - he will be even more difficult to mark this season because of the new rules.

I never thought of the new "holding" rules alright. He should be a prime candidate to benefit from them even if he is getting more attention from other teams.

Hmm...I'll probably not be investing till closer to gw 16 in any case so hopefully we'll no more by then.

Jan is more often than not staying back on set pieces. This has been the case both this season and the previous one, so I doubt he will see much improvement in attacking points. (Why he's staying back I don't know, but that's how it's been the last year.)

Now that Walker and Rose are level on price, I'd probably lean towards Rose. Those that got Walker early had themselves a bargain.

Thanks for that it explains a lot especially his zero shots and zero touches in the box so far this season.

Is there any chance dier gets his spot? It looks like wanyama has nailed that def mid spot but it is hard to see dier being dropped completely.

I think Dier get the DM spot back once he's fit again. Wanayama has been good, but Dier is a much better passer. Both might also play if Dembele remains out, but I'd say Dier-Dembele is the first choice pairing.

If poch continues with the 4-1-4-1 formation then I think wanyama keeps hist spot as he is far more mobile. What he does with dembele and dier I don't know hence the question of using dier in defence.

Re passing I'm not sure I agree with you but it is a very subjective thing so I'm happy to agree to disagree on that.

I think Poch rolled out the 4-1-4-1 specifically to work around Wanayama's shortcomings. With Eriksen coming deep he could concentrate on winning the ball and play the simple short pass.

When they played 4-2-3-1 with Wanayama in the pivot, the central passing just fell apart. There were no passes being completed through the middle. That's why we saw the 4-1-4-1, though it obviously remains to be seen if it's a permanent change, or if Poch will switch depending on who he has available.

In the 4-2-3-1 the pivot players need to be able to play pinpoint passes through the oppositon press (or in Dembele's case just carry the ball himself). This is vital in terms of getting Eriksen (and Lamela) on the ball between the lines, where he/they can be the most dangerous. Another positive being that it won't tempt Lamela to come deep as well, and play his high risk passes in our own half.

Dembele will always play if fit. (Yes, that's a big if...) He's like having an extra player on the pitch.

I believe that Dier first and foremost is seen as a DM. He'll be third choice for center back, as Verthongenweireld is just sooo good there's really no reason to brake them up. Regarding the passing, it's all relative. I'm not claiming that Dier is some kind of Pirlo or Gerrard. Just that he can complete more difficult and progressive passes than Wanayama has shown so far.

Spurs season ticket holder helping to clarify Spurs defender situation:

Toby- best option but of course most expensive. Ever present and so threatening from set pieces.
Vertonghen- at 5.6 he's a good option but the reason he has no attacking threat is because he doesn't go up for corners- a reason why I ditched him in gw4.
Rose- gets forward more than walker and has better end product. Still a rotation risk depending on who we have midweek and in the league.
Walker- great option but Rose is better. Still a rotation risk as I am certain if we had a must win CL game he would start and Poch would not hesitate to play trippier at the weekend if we had say Hull at home.

              Interesting questionl.

I guess most of us just dismiss the more expensive gks as the difference between their point potential and the cheaper ones is relatively small. The cheaper gks seem to have more save points and potential for bonus (in general) compared to the gks from premium defensive teams. This season with no budget defenders doing anything it is even more important to try and squeeze budget from the gks imo.

                That's a good point yes.
I'm always keen on having two budget gks but was tempted to have the serenity of Lloris for long term.

Got Walker at 5.7 and that was the deciding factor. If I can transfer him to Rose or Toby (unlikely) without losing too much money I probably will. Hoping the prices all level out.

Costa far from essential as very few will captain him on any given gw so you just need to cover his points with the player you have plus the extra money you have spent on another player. Also Costa did this in his first season in the PL, hit the ground running with loads of goals first 7 or 8 games then really tailed off. I don't think what he is doing will be sustained for the season.

Son is a real form player at the moment but you know the saying form is temporary class is permanent. I like him but again he will not keep scoring 10ppg imo (caveat nobody though Mahrez would do it last season either). It will be interesting to see the lineup when Kane is back which should not be too many games away. If you really think you need Son then just do Sterling to Son. I'd back Sterling over Son though.

            Not loving any of them.

I think getting shot of Rashford is right and looking to get Walcott and Arsenal def in is right but not sure how you can do it.

I have almost the same team as you but less money tied up in gks and I am taking out mane and antonio for arnie and walcott this weekend I think (might do mane and ighalo out for walcott and tekkers/bony not fully sure yet).

Can you downgrade Capoue and upgrade Rashford to Deeney/Tekkers/Bony (might be a game or two early for the Bony express though). That would give you mane to walcott next week and money over to do lovren to mustaphi or baines to bellerin?

Honestly no idea who to bring in this week, feel like my defence needs work?

          Heaton / Jaku

          McAuley, Bellerin, Valencia, Amat, Baines

          Firmino, Walcott, Antonio, Capoue, Sterling

          Deeney, Ibra, Costa

Any help would be much appreciated!

          Cech (Pickford)
          Walker, Coleman, Holebas (Amat, Kingsley)
          Sanchez, Firmino, Sterling, Son (Snodgrass)
          Aguero, Deeney, Austin

How does this look for a -4? My intention is to rotate Austin and Snoddy whoever has the best fixture over next 6 gameweeks...3-4-3 and 3-5-2 which works well.

Good team apart from two Swansea defenders, especially as Kingsley not playing now.

If I were you I'd do Coleman to 5.0 defender (Leicester have good fixtures soon) and upgrade Kingsley.

Yes Kingsley really does need an upgrade asap and will be prioritised once i can free up funds to do so. Have been lucky so far with 4th and 5th defenders and not required their cover, just pray it continues and willing to take the gamble to upgrade elsewhere.

I think your defence is will be ok until GW11 and that you'd play Snod in at least 4 of the next 6 weeks.

So, you could either do the above now and then Snod/Austin + Kingsley --> cheap attacking sub + £4.5m-ish defender by GW11, or,

do Kingsley + Austin --> £4.5m def + a bench forward now, and get Austin later.

The new defender needs to rotate well with Holebas, so maybe A. Smith or a WBA player.

Really tempted by Antonio > Tadic (-4). Should hold right?

Considering his fixtures, id hold Antonio for a gw or 2 max. Depend on his output this gw. If blank...Son coming in.
