Captains

Captain Poll – Gameweek 10

Our latest captain poll has now launched to gauge your opinion on the favourites and differential options for the Gameweek 10 armband.

Arsenal’s dynamic duo of 23.8% owned Alexis Sanchez (11.3) and Theo Walcott (8.1) were the top two choices for the captaincy in Gameweek 9 and are expected to be popular once again, despite both drawing blanks at home to Middlesbrough at the weekend.

Their failure to score was not for want of trying as the pair fired off seven goal attempts between them, with all of 21.2% owned Walcott’s three shots finding the target. Away to a Sunderland side with no clean sheets this season, they seem primed to pick up points.

Another likely candidate for the summit is 29.6% owned Romelu Lukaku (9.7), who earned an assist against Burnley’s resolute defence on Saturday. With West Ham visiting he should also have more chances, as the London side have conceded nine goals across their four away fixtures this term.

Burnley may be rock solid defensively at home but away from Turf Moor it is another matter. They have shipped nine on the road and travel to a wounded Manchester United side eager to restore pride after their 4-0 away defeat to Chelsea at the weekend.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic (11.3) has lost a further 36,144 FPL owners this week already, but with a 39.2% ownership he is still likely to be a popular captaincy pick among managers overall. We anticipate it may be a different story with our poll, after five league outings in a row without a goal.

Paul Pogba (8.3) and Marcos Rashford (6.9) offer differential options for those that believe the Red Devils can overcome Sunday’s humiliation. Both have an FPL ownership just below 10%.

Two teams with an even worse away record than Burnley present another glut of armband options.

No side has conceded more than Leicester’s 13 away goals and with the Foxes visiting Tottenham, Christian Eriksen (8.2), Dele Alli (8.2) and Heung-min Son (7.7) all step forward as viable captaincy candidates. With 20 points over his last three league appearances, Alli looks the pick of this trio.

The other travel sick side is Hull, who face a Watford side that has scored in all their home league matches this season. The Tigers’ concession of 12 goals on the road therefore gives the Hornet’s penalty taking striker Troy Deeney (7.1) significant potential for returns.

For those who want to take a risk on placing the armband on a defender, Hornets wing-back Jose Holebas (4.6) also looks enticing, with 27 points in his last three league matches.

Manchester City’s stock as the prime route to captaincy candidates has taken a knock in recent weeks with 43.9% owned Sergio Aguero (13.1) last finding the net in the league back in Gameweek 6.

If fit, Kevin De Bruyne (10.7) may offer a more secure option – the 10.1% owned Belgian was substituted against Southampton on Sunday after suffering a knock but looks likely to return when City travel to West Brom.

A final mention goes to the roulette wheel that is Liverpool’s options. With a visit to a Crystal Palace side without a clean sheet this term Sadio Mane (9.0), Philippe Coutino (8.4) and Roberto Firmino (8.5) all look strong candidates. But which will emerge with the biggest points haul from game to game remains one of this season’s key mysteries.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later this week, as we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering our view of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

Leave Walcott for one more week (against SUN)....Looking at Hazard's stats, his points all come from home games. Away games he's not as effective. That said, Conte's system has change which allows him more freedom without defending.

I know but they are not yet gelling as 1 unit that's what was meant, you can have a team of superstars but when they play as individuals your team suffers.

a manager's philosophy and approach can become dated. That's what some people are accusing Jose of. That he hasn't ' moved with the times'

Yeah agreed but it wasn't dated 2 seasons ago when he won the league, and the times don't move THAT fast.

He won the league 17 months ago. Harsh to say that he is 'past it', but there is no doubt that this is the biggest challenge of his career. I think both he and the team need time.

Been saying for years that the majority of the players are not good enough. Fellaini, Valencia, Rooney etc.

It's okay buying Pogba for 100m but when he is surrounded by midtable players what's the point?

Disagree, Valencia is possible one of the best right backs in the world right now, strong, pace, stamina, excellent delivery, questionable defensively at times, mostly with positional play, but so is Bellerin, Dani Alves etc

Fellani is a regular starter for the highest ranked team in European international football, so he can't be that bad!

The team is full of international class footballers, problem is so is the rest of the PL top 8

          • 10 Years

Decent player is Valencia, but you aint gonna win the league with him.

          Lingard? Rashford?

They may be international class players but they are behind the likes of Spurs/Liverpool simply because the other teams have better squads

Doesn't have the personnel he usually needs to win. The men who give their all for him and the club. At Chelsea in both spells, the old guard was key especially in defense. At Inter, he had a team full of warriors who would die for him. Mourinho needs a solid defense to win titles. He doesn't have that at Utd. 2 fullbacks who aren't really fullbacks, Smalling is very overrated and Baily is still young and is now injured.

Something in the middle. He's not past it (yet). The players are underperforming but it's not just their fault. His tactics aren't exactly brilliant too.

      He's not past it.
      1) his are not 'his' players, plus they aren't world class, i'd arguably say that i'd take about 6 spurs players before utds squad.
      2) he's only been there few months
      3) the other managers have caught up.

      No.

New team, new manager, new players, young and inexperienced lads, new system, etc.

At the moment things aren't clicking, and there may just be some worse times to come before they do.

I still think we have a capable manager and talented squad, and eventually things will improve once everything comes together.

Time to end the expensive 8th attacker plan and go for an expensive bench defender plan. Snoddy+Amat to DeRoon + Holebas for free(walker Koscielny Vvd pieters Holebas my back line). Defenders more likely to miss an entire 90 minute game rather than attackers who get subbed on and more likely to get a CS off the bench than an expensive attacker getting a goal/assist. Taken a lot of stubbornness but i finally see the light!

I've also had other pressing issues to address so haven't been able to get rid of him.

I now honestly don't know what to do with him. Suppose to be back this gw so is it worth holding or taking a hit to get someone like Fuchs? I just don't know anymore. 🙁

Despite another rough week - that's three in a row now - my 2 frees transfers were pretty good long term and especially in terms of prices

Antonio and Ibrahimovic out for Walcott and Lukaku. 4pts up so far ....but the price changes involved for both have been huge.

Not sure I'll have another smooth next week as GWK 10 is going to have to be a hits week - but all being well GWK 11 onwards should be far smoother.

Gotta get worse before it gets better.

Yep, already have. As I said on the Scoutcast my most boring season was 2014/15 - my fourth top 5K finish in a row. Nothing I did could alter me finishing there. Couldn't get much higher, couldn't dip as was fearful of dropping rank.

I think given my track record I can afford a different season. Certainly a challenge.

Red Lightning took a 20 pt hit last week to steady his ship - may do similar - his new team looks great even though it didn't bring immediate returns. I may do similar.

Yes, my new team scored 47, but after the 20 point deduction I'm out of LMS, bottom of the FFS Premier mini-league and down to 1.7m overall. The future is looking brighter now though.

I took a 40 point hit once, back in 2012-13. Dropped over 200,000 places down to the one million mark that game-week, but regained them the following one and ten GWs later I was up to 200k. Hope it works at least as well this time!

      Rough;

Not a lot really for once. 6th captain fail in 9 Gameweeks. This time it was Theo! Only successful weeks I've had have been when Aguero has scored..

Hazard scoring for he second week in a row after selling him was annoying. But I got points from the players I brought in with the money saved so not all bad.

      Smooth;

Deliberated on taking a hit all week to move Ibra and Capoue or just trading Antonio to Sterling or Coutinho. Decided to just do Antonio>Coutinho and hope for the best as Coutinho looked lively on Monday night. At least that worked out ok for once.

Arsenal cleanie from Koscielny plus bonus justified my transfer the week before.

43 points and a slight lift in rank. Nothing special.

Smooth - Nothing, got the same points in my team as most would have.

Bang on the average with 42. Lots of minor chip ins from players but nothing above 7.

Deeney in for Rashford - no change but was a longer term move.
Benched McCauley for Williams but that was obvious move with Pool home form.

Sweet? Well, Firmino got an assist and Holebas a clean sheet. Heaton’s two save points also was better than nothing.

Rough? Replaced Baines with Clyne for a hit to play the latter instead of Smith. Now my two “good” defenders are Clyne and Valencia, which obviously won’t get me many points. Doubled up on Arsenal by bringing in Walcott and captaining Sánchez did not work out. Why does Sánchez never score when I captain him, by the way?

Gameweek rank of 3.3 million, probably way behind your blind grandma’s dead team. Really, how do you succeed in this game?

An average GW. Not that bad compared to the average but in my GW bracket, pretty bad. Red arrows mostly. =(

Smooth:- All 5 defenders >6 points.
Rough: I didn't play 5 defenders, which I don't think I'll be brave enough to play the whole season lol. Smith and McAuley on the bench (14 points). Sanchez captained. All my mids didn't perform. Only maximum points of 3.

I planned to get Coutinho after this GW. Didn't expect West Brom to concede 2 goals. Also, that last minute goal by West Ham robbed me a clean sheet from Pickford. Although not the best, I'll take this GW. The only thing I regret is putting off too long to buy a liverpool player.

      In general smooth!

Gone with Bellerin, Koscielny and Sanchez so can't get Walcott in which worked well against the masses this week.

Also had Mane but wasn't happy with Sanchez captain or that Son did nothing when playing up front think he's better when playing elsewhere bit like Firmino.

I chose this week of all weeks to play All Out Attack. D'oh.

Then again, aside from Holebas, most of my bargain basement defenders were dropped anyway, and my autosub scored 2-2=0 - so perhaps it wasn't such a bad move after all. #NeedSomeNorthLondonDefence

I am in the same place as you Jonty, was at 70K in GW3 and now sit at 1.3M. Really dont seem to be getting any traction this season after consecutive top 10K finishes.

Decided to throw some hits at it so took a -8, so my smooth is the fact that I brought in Austin, Countinho and Holebas for Benteke, Antonio and Collins which got me more points and increased my TV. Set up nicely for the next few games!

Rough is the fact that I had McCauley on the bench as 3rd sub after Valencia who can on for 0 to replace Amat.

Scout Pick Community Champion Lottery – Gameweek 10

    New Budget - 84m!!

Once again we are on the look out for a champion to represent the community to take on the Scout Picks and win the chance of a prize.

If you want to take part please email your FFS name and FPL ID number to community@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk .

The champion will then be selected at random shortly after the deadline of 11am tomorrow (Tuesday) and then be asked to submit their XI by Friday 2pm by emailing me at jonty@fantasyfootballscout.co.uk

We only need 11 picks and please be mindful of the 84m budget. There’s no captain in the picks either and please stick to a designated FPL formation, including no more than three players from one team. No captain or chips will be applied.

At the end of the season the champion who beats the picks by the highest margin will win a £100 Amazon voucher.

The champion will be revealed in a midweek Scout Squad article on Tuesday, which will outline our initial thinking around the picks. Our and the champions picks will be revealed as usual the day before the first match of the Gameweek.

Should the community “Champion” fail to provide an initial or final Scout Pick selection, then an “Assistant Manager” chosen by us, will gain control of the selection to represent the community for the Gameweek in question.

Had to up it by a 1m. With the price rises it was becoming increasingly difficult to field an XI without going for four at the back.

Been enough price rises to justify that I think.

Rest of defence is Mustafi Valencia Evans Amat, so I need someone to rotate well with West Brom fixtures. Apparently Bournemouth work well, but stoke fixtures look so tempting, and Holebas has such great attacking threat.

Massive difference playing 3 at the back also, allowing Luiz to fill a hole going forward and the knock on affect with Matic. I would be concerned about Luiz ban which could revert to a back 4 again.

Even with Terry and Zouma returning?

        1. Eze Really?

Terry willonly be able to play middle of the back 3 and not as mobile as luiz. May not be suited to a back 3. Zouma a different kettle of fish.

    Heaton, Jaku
    Vertonghen, Williams, Pieters, McAuley, Amat
    Sanchez, Payet, Firmino, Redmond, Capoue
    Kun, Lukaku, C. Wilson

    2 FT, 0.3 ITB

Feels strange to sell Payet, but hard to ignore Coutinho with his form/fixtures. Getting him would allow me to upgrade Williams too. Also considering Hazard. Any thoughts?

You could also down grade capoue for 4.5

shaq is more of a one hit wonder to me. 15 points one week, then 2, 2, 2 then 15 again.... frustrating to own. but with those fixtures who knows. his stats need some serious research

Yeah agreed man, he's cheap and cheerful though, so it's tempting me. Maybe Arnie instead?

0.8 ITB, so taking Antonio out would leave me with 7.9 to spend on his replacement.

Burnley scored 2 against Everton at the weekend, and Everton's defence is better than United's I believe.

I asked the Question of whether or not use AOA for Capoue, but most people seem to be willing to bench him.

I am debating using AOA with Capoue or bench him and Play Smith

Rojo is no worse than Smalling. Shaw will probably come in left back and Blind into centre?

Most likely this, although Smalling and Blind were terrible against CHE so anyone's head could be on the chopping block after that embarrassment.
