Seemingly each Gameweek a different player emerges as an essential purchase after they produce  a huge Fantasy Premier League points haul.

Dele Alli, who scored his third brace in a row in Gameweek 20, is the latest to join an elite bunch of must haves, and this week alone has already attracted 300,000 new FPL owners.

But are those investing in such huge points haulers like Alli acquiring a superb source of points over the next few Gameweeks or are they just chasing tails.

I thought I’d take a look at four players who have all been subject to intense transfer activity following a stellar Gameweek score to find out if chasing points really a good strategy this season.

Philippe Coutinho – Gameweek 1

What did he do? The Liverpool schemer ran the show away to Arsenal, scoring a brace and earning maximum bonus points to return a 15 point haul.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership within a week increased from 423,848 to 1,043,541 to become one of the game’s highest owned players.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? From Gameweek’s 2 to 4 he struggled, bringing in just five points across all three matches and only playing for 15 minutes against Leicester in Gameweek 4. In Gameweek 5 his assist and two bonus points finally rewarded his half a million new owners with a seven point FPL return. Gameweek 6 was when he really hit his stride, bringing in his second of three more double digit returns.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 3

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that didn’t yield strong immediate returns but proved to be a good long term option until his injury in Gameweek 13.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic – Gameweek 2

What did he do? The Manchester United scored a brace at home to Southampton and maximum bonus points for the second week in a row to deliver a 13 point FPL return. With three goals in just two fixtures and Hull up next Fantasy managers had seen enough and the big Swede was declared essential.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership grew from 1,583,486 to 2,044, 184 ahead of the Hull match in Gameweek 3.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? Gameweek 3 marked a reversal in fortunes. He managed just an assist and one goal over the next four fixtures to deliver a mere 14 point total return. It was a slump that lasted until Gameweek 11, when he scored a brace, his first league goals since Gameweek 4.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 3.5

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that didn’t yield strong immediate returns and also proved to be a poor transfer for a further four fixtures.

Eden Hazard- Gameweek 11

What did he do? Against Everton at home the Chelsea midfielder was magnificent, scoring twice, assisting another goal and bringing in a maximum bonus points to take his Gameweek 11 points tally to 19.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership rocketed by 336,041 ahead of Gameweek 12.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? Over the next four fixtures he delivered just one goal and three bonus points to bring his total from Gameweek 12 to 15 to 19 points, the same amount he scored in that Everton match. His owners had to wait until Gameweek 18 before he delivered another double digit points haul.

A better value move for Marcos Alonso owners would have been to double up on Blues defenders with Cesar Azpilicueta earning 18 points over the next four fixtures, just one point less than Hazard for around 4m less.

The smarter move would have been to note Diego Costa’s consistency not act on Eden Hazard’s explosiveness. The Spaniard earned 34 points over the next four fixtures, to accrue a Gameweek average of 8.5.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 4.5

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that failed to offer an immediate return on investment.

Alexis Sanchez – Gameweek 14

What did he do? Away to West Ham and fielded as a striker the Arsenal midfielder earned one of FPL’s biggest ever Gameweek hauls of 23 points, scording a hattrick and adding maximum bonus and an assist to his tally.

How many new owners did he attract? His ownership grew by 385,666 within a week taking his value from 11.4 to 11.7.

What did he do over the next four fixtures? Of our quartet he has registered the highest average Gameweek return post mega-haul, scoring 23 points over the next four league matches. But he is yet to register another double digit Gameweek score in FPL, with seven points his highest tally, in Gameweeks 16 and 20.

Average Gameweek FPL points return over next four fixtures: 5.25

Verdict: A tail chasing transfer that while didn’t offer strong immediate returns did offer his new owners a consistent scoring asset. Just once since Gameweek 14 did he fail to register an assist or a goal.

Conclusion

Can Dele Alli buck the trend of essential stars failing to live up to their must have status?

In a way he already has, but only for those who were shrewd enough to invest in him before he faced Chelsea.

His ownership increased by 100,254 between Gameweek 19, when he scored his second Christmas brace away to Watford, and Gameweek 20, when his third brace of the festive fixtures arrived.

Those that labelled him essential then have already been rewarded with a 15 point return, more than both Ibrahimovic and Coutinho managed in the next four games following their must have declaration.

But for those anticipating strong returns from now on history suggests they could be disappointed. It is also worth pointing out that his six goal run has come from just six shots on target, a scoring rate that some in the community have suggested is unsustainable.

With West Brom and Middlesbrough at home and Sunderland away in the next four, Alli certainly has the fixtures to prevail but perhaps those investing now may be too late given the experiences of the above quartet of previous must haves.

Finally, the example of Hazard and Costa is worth noting. Could Christian Eriksen be a better target than Alli perhaps? The more consistent Dane has six double digit hauls this season, two more than his English team mate.

From what I’ve noticed most big-point streaks last for about four game weeks. If you get the respective player after the first or second game week, you are likely to get immediate returns. If you get him after the third or fourth, unfortunately he probably has already dried out.

    My personal stories:
    - Got Antonio after GW3, got 20pts over his next two games then only 7pts the next three. Sold him for Walcott then. Overall gain = 5.4 PPG, not too bad.
    - Capoue after GW4, got 10pts the next game, 7pts, the next three. Sold for Allen. Overall gain = 4.25 PPG, so-so gains (should have kept Townsend, who scored 14pts the same week Capoue got 10)
    - Firmino after GW4, got 17pts the next 4 GWs (4.25), then went on for a good run for a few games before drying up. Overall 5.07 ppg.
    - Sanchez after GW7, after his streak between GWs 3-6, got 23pts the next 4 (5.75 ppg), was very tempted to sell him for Hazard, but luckily kept him for his 2 big hauls. Overall 8.38 ppg.
    - Allen after GW8, got 14pts after over next four GWs, sold him for Zaha, due to suspension, change in position and end of good run. 3.5 ppg overall, not too good.
    - Walcott after GW8, got 3pts the next game, sold him for Coutinho right away after he got injured. Got him for a hit too. Probably my worst knee-jerk transfer.
    - Coutinho after GW9, got 22pts over the next four games, sold him for Eriksen due to injury. 5.5 ppg.
    - Alonso after GW11, 20pts over the next four (5 ppg), had him since, 4.78 ppg. Pretty good.
    - Zaha after GW12, 29pts over next three, sold for Siggy. 9.6 ppg. Best transfer ever.
    - Kane after GW13, 39pts in 6 weeks, exchanged for Costa. 6.5 ppg
    - Siggy after GW15. 15pts in 5 GWs and in really favorable fixtures. 3 ppg. Should have kept Zaha.
    - Ibra after GW17. 28pts in 3 weeks, 9.3ppg. No comment needed.
    Conclusions:
    - Most players are in form for streaks in 4 games. You have to get them after game 1 or 2 if you want immediate returns. Zaha, Costa and Ibra are the only exceptions.
    - If you get them after the 4th game, you might have to wait a while for next returns. However, if they are quality players, it might be worth the wait (example: Sanchez). The worst thing you can do is miss one player’s streak, then keep him for 3-4 blank weeks, and exchange him for another streaky player and miss the next streak as well. Hazard and Sanchez are particularly bad in that aspect since they alternate being in form and if you chase their points, you might always end up with the wrong one.

No mate, it's a very good point. That's why I'm staying away from Alli bandwagon, I missed the train with him most likely. Already have Eriksen, so now I have to have my eyes open for next one and jump on them early.

          Thanks for this, cheers.

Yea his presentation is too deep .
He might do well to simplify it though he has thought about it carefully if you have the patience to read.

"Patience to read" ... See this a lot more on 'lengthier' posts now, especially if they're not 'well presented'. Took me 2 mins to skim over that and understand it. Since when have we become so averse to reading posts that are longer than 150 characters!?

Nice summary of various players streaks and some I can relate to all too well!

Read the whole thing, some very decent points there.
TBH I think I agree with you , on noticing the 4 gameweek window.
I think if you can experiment on your own team by following this rule or have a second team to play around with and show the results visually, more will see what you mean.

By the 3rd or 4th game not only do FPL managers start to see a player with great form, but so to do EPL managers. You can be sure a player who's had great recent form draws a lot of attention in pregame tactics from managers to try and shut them out of games which will inevitably mean reducing returns

Is the 4 gameweek window a result of initial nice fixtures creating the form then it running over more difficult fixtures (such as with Alli v Chelsea)? Would be interesting to understand the spark of the purple patch.

I don't know if I can generalize that much, but in some cases it is definitely true. Sanchez's first hauls came against WAT and HUL and it spilled onto CHE.

But it seems like most big hauls come against the same teams (SWA, HUL, WAT, SOU, CRY).

In conclusion, if you see a quality player produce a double-digit week (or even a goal) and he has some good fixtures incoming, it's probably a good idea to try him. That's what I did with Eriksen - got him after getting a goal vs. Chelsea, and he had SWA and HUL in the next 3, in which he exploded.

Chasing Tails not as profitable this season that it was last - Mahrez, Vardy & Aguero last year

This year - not so much - Ibra went to sleep after a good start, Aguero has been more down than up, Sanchez has had slumps after hauls and Hazard looks like the last season version again.

Alli will attract much interest, but I have a feeling Kane is the one to go for. Alli had a really poor game against Chelsea and admitted the same afterwards, - it was the brilliance of Eriksen and poor Chelsea defending that gifted him goals .

Players go through runs and it's predicting those runs that seperates who does well in this game -

Im predicting the following for a little run in the next 4/5 GW's:

    De Bruyne
    Pogba
    Kane
    Sanchez
    Townsend

I hope you're right about Pogba, I bought him instead of Alli last week. This season seems to be all about catching those 5-6 game runs when a player does well.

People need to forget about Pogba. He'll never be a prolific FPL points scorer with the way Mourinho deploys him.

I only ever chase a bandwagon when it is a cheap player, e.g Capoue. I didn't chase any of the above. I generally try and have a plan for the large value players and stick to it. For me I don't look at players on a game to game basis. I look at them on a 4-5+ game block basis and if I think player A will outscore player B. I pick the one I want and then stick with them for that time period regardless. As the season develops you have to adjust sometimes but the for me the key is not to panic and have faith in your pick.

All players can have a stellar week or disappoint you, however typically the better players we all value, will give you good returns with patience. Sanchez for example I would only ever take out if he was going to be out for a long period of time. Yes some weeks he will get 2pts but if you stick with him and he will get you loads.

I started the season with Hazard for example and the brought Costa in early on for Vardy. I later dropped Hazard to accommodate the return of Augero and never brought him back as for me Costa was enough and in general, I try not to double up on attacking players from teams. Maybe I was lucky with that one but as above Hazard was dropped as I thought Aguero would be the best option over the next run of games.

Interesting strategy to not double up. Think you might be right. I am sticking with Hazard though for two more games. He still has reasonable stats and good fixtures

Nice to hear a non-knee jerk strategy. I must admit that while I play the same way, I find it very difficult not to switch from my path. Examples are taking out Siggy before CPL and Antonio before his last goal.

So true! This has been my downfall this season. Not looking at fixtures and stats and working out who might be the next thing. Then spending transfers on bandwagons where the wheels have already fallen off.

I did Alli but now I think Eriksen will be the better long term bet. Will just ride Alli price rises though

For me its become more complicated in recent seasons due to numbers playing the game increasing (among other reasons). Even though the chance is small that he'll continue to get big points, due to ownership it can be truly punishing rank wise if you dont have him.

Therefore having players like this could even be looked at as an insurance policy of sorts. Makes it hard to make progress though.

This is another reason why think more than one transfer at a time is best, one can be the must have, the other the speculative next bandwagon for example....

Not too sure I would include Alli as a bandwagon. For me the last few games have been a confirmation of a raw young talent taking the next step forward and becoming one of the very top players in the league. Hanging onto him will result in a high ppg, imo.

Great article and love the title.

Have felt this about Alli and didn't transfer him in this week because of it, could stop thinking about Hazard hauling at Everton, people going crazy (myself included) to get him in then doing very little.

Alli is class and I'm getting him but want him in 2 weeks and not now so waiting and not letting the hauls change the plan, can justify selling Hazard who has Leicester and Hull for Alli (when he has West Brom and City) so not chasing my tail with this one.
