Captain Poll – Gameweek 26

More time, fewer players: the captaincy decision for Gameweek 26 is somewhat unique.

While the Premier League takes a weekend off to concentrate on the FA Cup, our latest poll has to make do without assets from EFL Cup finalists Southampton and Manchester United, as well as their respective league opponents Arsenal and Manchester City.

This could hand Chelsea’s Eden Hazard (10.2) and Diego Costa (10.5) an opportunity to compete for the summit, as they prepare to welcome a resurgent Swansea City to Stamford Bridge.

While the Swans are much improved under Paul Clement, they have still mustered just a single clean sheet and conceded nine goals in his five matches in charge.

Costa’s strong track record against the Welsh side could also weigh in his favour: he’s scored seven goals against them over three seasons.

As mentioned in last night’s Stock Check, however, Costa’s form is coming into question: he’s delivered a modest three goals over his last eight Gameweek starts.

Hazard’s remarkable home record perhaps edges him above the striker in the armband pecking order, with five of the Belgian’s six double-digit hauls arriving on home turf.

The pair of Blues assets are owned by around a third of FPL managers.

Pedro (6.9), who found the net against Burnley on Sunday, is another Chelsea player that enjoys home comforts, with three of his five double-figure returns arriving at Stamford Bridge.

Having torn into a hapless Bournemouth in his previous home outing, Romelu Lukaku (9. 9) will surely be heavily backed for the visit of an erratic Sunderland defence.

The Black Cats earned a surprise 4-0 away victory against Crystal Palace in Gameweek 24, but were sunk 2-0 at West Brom in their previous road trip, and shipped four without reply at home to Southampton on Saturday.

Ross Barkley (7.1), who scored and earned an assist in the 6-3 rout of Eddie Howe’s side in Gameweek 24, could also attract attention.

Liverpool look to be the other prime source of captaincy candidates as they prepare to visit a Leicester City side in freefall.

The Foxes have shipped nine goals in their last four league encounters and last kept a clean sheet back in Gameweek 20.

Meanwhile, Jurgen Klopp’s troops look resurgent following the return of winger Sadio Mane (9.2) from the Africa Cup of Nations. A quick-fire brace against Spurs on Saturday evening should establish him as the favoured Reds option over team-mates Philippe Coutinho (8.2) and Roberto Firmino (8.4).

The Brazilian pair have 13 goals between them this term, but Firmino has registered returns in just two of his previous seven Gameweek starts, while Coutinho’s last goal was back in Gameweek 11.

However, it should be noted that as mentioned in our recent Stock Check and this report, there’s a possibility that Liverpool may yet miss their Gameweek 26 fixture should Millwall take Leicester City to a replay in the fifth round of the FA Cup.

With a four-man defence favoured in the absence of the injured Danny Rose, the Spurs attack has struggled of late. Since the left-back hobbled off away to Sunderland in Gameweek 23, Mauricio Pochettino’s men have scored just once.

While this may temper interest in their key attacking assets Harry Kane (11.2), Dele Alli (8.8) and Christian Eriksen (8.7), a home clash against Stoke City could yet revive their stock. On the road, the Potters have conceded 21 goals, keeping just two clean sheets.

West Brom’s Chris Brunt (5.1) must rank among the top differential armband options on offer. He faces a home tie against the league’s most obliging defence when Bournemouth pay visit.

The injury-ravaged Cherries rearguard has shipped 13 goals in their last four matches ahead of a meeting with Manchester City tonight. Meanwhile, Brunt has served up 61 FPL points, including three double-digit hauls, in his last seven Hawthorns matches.

The Irishman’s strong track record is likely to give him the edge over Baggies striker Salomon Rondon (6.7), who last scored in Gameweek 16, and winger Matt Phillips (5.9), who will be looking to avoid his sixth successive blank.

Hull City’s Oumar Niasse (5.6) is another potential punt. With Abel Hernandez sidelined, the Everton loanee will be relied upon as a source of goals in the forthcoming Gameweeks, starting with their home encounter with Burnley. The Clarets remain a travel-sick side, shipping 24 goals and earning a solitary shut out on the road.

Harry Maguire (4.4) may well be another candidate among the Hull’s ranks, providing the promise of points at both ends of the pitch.

The Clarets attack has scored a mere five times on the road, while Maguire boasts more goal attempts than any other defender since he gained regular starts in Gameweek 15.

The Captain Poll is now live in the middle column on your homepage on desktop, or via the slide-in menu on mobile and tablet under recent comments.

We will be back to check in on progress in the poll later ahead of next week’s deadline when we deliver our “Captain Sensible” article offering an analysis of the results and the statistics behind the leading contenders.

    Heaton, Jakupovic
    Alonso, Baines, Brunt, Chambers, Wilson
Sanchez, Eriksen, Alli, Phillips, De Roon
    Ibrahimovic, Costa, Defoe

    2FT, 0.9 in bank

Would like to deal with Eriksen, Alli & Phillips but they all have a decent fixture this week, so should probably wait.

Baines -> Coleman to make sure I don't lose a FT?

For me this comes down to whether you're keeping both Ibra and Sanchez over their blanks and what your plan for Defoe is.

Baines > Coleman feels very sideways, even though I can understand where you're coming from

Keeping both, as definitely want to keep Sanchez in the long run, and Ibra has good fixtures (minus blanks). Don't want to waste fixtures getting them back in again for the sake of 1 GW.

What are your thoughts re Defoe?

Which is the better option? Costa or Hazard.

Costas record against Swansea is hard to ignore but his form isn't great at the mo, will he find his rhythm again? Yet Hazard is more likely to explode in a home game.

    Thoughts?

Costa for me as safer option, though admittedly less explosive

Costa, but there are better options for premium strikers than premium mids atm, hence the shift towards Hazard.

I would be wary of Brunt in the immediate future.

With Evans back, it remains to be seen how Pulis will solve the defense/midfield puzzle.

He may very well be sacrificed for Chadli/Morrison.

    A) Rondon + Sanchez > Lukaku + mane (-4)

    or

    B) Ibra > Lukaku

Rondon has a nice fixture, but ibra has a peach in 27. Need Lukaku in this week after missing the big one two weeks ago.

Last couple of weeks have really shot me up in some mini leagues and I've gone into first place but not by much. Bit of money at stake in a few

One I've already won I'd say, 100 points clear and they don't take it as seriously as me.

currently in the top 10 and 100 points off third place - when the money prizes come into play.

I was 140 off the lead at this point last year and came first so my main mission is to get into those money spots. I benefitted from rage wildcards and lack of dgwk planning from my competitors last year. This year they are more savvy, but I'm currently third in my mini league for February so all being well I should pick them off. 🙂

This great to hear. I'm 139pts off a leader in a £25 entry league with 50 players. Captain choices have hit me last couple of weeks as ground could have been made up.

I'm hoping ahead gw28 the leader plays his wild card. His track record does not suggest he's a clued up player but this year could be different

16points ahead currently, going in to gw21 I was 104 off the pace, i have a lot to thank Lukaku for 🙂

  10. Monthly FPL Prizes

Fantasy Football Scout daily hot topic

    Monthly FPL Prizes

Should FPL make more of their monthly prizes and competitions.

I've only just seen that FPL actually has monthly prizes:

    Manager of the Month

    Tablet computer
    Bluetooth speaker
    Copy of FIFA 17
    Nike Ordem 4 match ball
    Nike manager jacket

Which admittedly are not that great considering the achievement involved.

But should FPL improve on that. Make more of the monthly accolade and throw in some more prizes too - perhaps VIP match tickets.

Currently FPL only allows one team but should they relax that and encourage people to create new teams every month to go for these prizes.

Obviously the season long prize should be the focus but to me as someone in the overall ranking doldrums this would be an excellent way to keep interest going.

When UFPL was going its monthly prize quests was an excellent part of the game. With £1,000 at stake there was certainly incentive.

How else do you think FPL could modify its games?

    1. Mikeharbrw
      • 11 Years
      7 years, 2 months ago

Yeah considering its the most popular game it definitely should have more prizes. The prizes should also be of a higher calibre- I mean who doesn't have a copy of FIFA 17 that wants one by now?

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't they used to do quarterly prizes too?

and would it be cheeky to suggest that FFS could do weekly prizes? :p

they do weekly prizes but just for the top manager.

Even my kids have a tablet each so currently their weekly and monthly prizes are a bit lame.

Loved to see them pepped up. Would significantly boost interest. Half the 4m stop by Christmas - but how many would stay if they could set up a new team and go for monthly prizes for the rest of the year?

The Sky game definitely has the edge on the prize front. I mean its not like the Premier League are strapped for cash is it?

Aren't there some restrictions around gambling laws that mean FPL keep the prizes low value so that they can have a global player base or have I imagined that?

I think UFPL was banned in some countries because you actually had to pay to take part. With FPL I don't see how ir could fall foul of gambling regulations as its free to enter...?

Yeah i think there is some truth in this as I'm mainly resident in Mexico over London throughout the year Sky(mid season) blocked me from continuing playing their fpl game(wish they had done it at the start as was ranked inside 1k-aware i didnt qualify for any prizes as not permanent in UK but was in many private cash mini-leagues). Very annoying.....

I think some do. But the rules say we shouldn't and there is a risk that FPL could make that team null and void I guess. That's what is stopping me....but maybe I should just do it anyway. Seems odd until the game itself sort of okays it.

you have to wonder whether they just think 4 million players without having to offer too much is okay.
I hadn't noticed they did monthly prizes.
Much has been made of keeping people engaged throughout the whole season.
Better monthly prizes might do that.
Prizes are probably costing them nothing anyway - sponsorships etc. Probably equate to a goody bag handed out at a press junket.
If they think the game is worth a TV show (Mark's) then it should be worth upping the prize antes etc.

This was the reason I gave up FPL to concentrate on UFPL last year, too many conflicting emotions when your striker in one team bags a brace against your def in the other or def keeps a cs against your striker

Genuinely wouldn't manage the upkeep I don't think - I abandoned the Sky game after about 6 weeks this year due to lack of time, I was just outside the top 1,000 I think so it wasn't a rage quit, just honestly couldn't manage that plus FPL and DugoutFC. I've entered FanDuel a handful of times but only because it's a one off each time. Even having a 'mayfly' FPL team would break this camel's back I think.

Well that's possibly a different discussion.

I think they need to slow down the transfer market anyway - even without greater interest from monthly players.

Currently prices are in the hands of people that think its a good idea to ditch Sanchez before Hull or get in Gabbiadini ahead of a blank.

More than 1 team for the season per person a huge no-thats what killed TFF/Sun FF & others for me...is main reason I switched to only fpl as who wants to play against basically algorithym bots with 100+ teams......however, be a fan of being able to enter teams ONLY for weekly & monthly prizes - I think that would be great fun, especially to keep up the interests of good fpl players who may not have had such a good season(mentioning no names 🙂

The problem I see is the mix of managers making transfers. Some going for different prizes - weekly, monthly or the season. With the current system you really need everyone going for the same goal.

I mean here is a crazy point regarding transfer activity - there are some managers who simply play the game to try and get the highest team value. They make a crazy number of transfers to achieve this. Think what this does do the player prices.

Having more prizes would be good, the satisfaction and sense of achievement from having won something (even a Freddo Frog!) is nice.

They should also add any prizes to your history, so it might say "Finished 4th February 2017", "FPL Cup Quarter Finalist 2016/17", or "Gameweek 17 Highest Scorer 2016/17".

I find it a bit annoying to see the Manager of the Week prize always being won by someone who has played their Bench Boost or Triple Captain chip specifically for that purpose, and possibly also with a newish team or one that has just played its Wildcard. It would be more interesting if the prize was awarded to the highest normal team (or perhaps there should be a second prize for the highest scoring normal team).

Players who play well all season are far more deserving. I have just noticed that the top twenty managers each week and the top ten each month all receive prizes, but only the top three overall. That doesn't seem fair.

Is it possible for Manager of the Week and Manager of the Month to be completely separate from the main game, with their teams not counting towards the Overall Rankings or Price Changes?

Regarding gameweek 28, if all the premier league teams win as identified in an earlier post we could be left with 3 fixtures.

Is anybody looking at those 3 fixtures, wondering if its really worth it to field a full 11 if your team is full of dross?

Its hard to pick out budget clean sheet options amongst those fixtures, so your forced to look at midfield and forward options.

    Bournemouth vs West Ham
    Everton vs West Brom
    Hull vs Swansea

I'll be lobbying for Costa in the Scout Squad. Only three goals in eight but his underlying stats are still strong. He looked good against Burnley - whole chelsea side was defeated by tactics but he never gave up and looked hungry for goals throughout.

He does love to score against Swansea too.

He's had one less shot on target than Lukaku over the last four.

He's third for shots in the box last four

And among strikers he's second for goal attempts.

The eye test is key though - on the do you want to actually score scale with Sanchez at 10 and Vardy at 0 I'd give Costa an 8 or 9.

        1. Sebastes

Is this correct though? He's had one less attempt than Lukaku, but SoT is 1 to 5.

SiB and GA should be correct though and I still think he's a good option and got him in for Ibra today.

Get with the message s, Jonty uses the stats to back up his arguments not as a critical tool to see if the argument holds water. If it didn't work for last four he would have expanded the search to last 6 or 8 gws. And if that didn't work he'd throw in the eye argument.

Moral of the story is his gut usually sees him right and he looks for stats to back it up. If the stats don't say what he wants to hear he ignores them and pulls the eye test argument. He's usually right though.

Burnley at home v Burnley away are very different.

Also while Swansea have improved - its mainly been in attack. They have had one clean sheet under Clement and shipped nine over his short tenure.

Swansea are joyful in attack but still leaky at the back and Chelsea are excellent at home.

Also Burnley' game plan was to bypass their own weak link and Chelsea's strength - the midfield. It was perfectly executed.

Swansea's key strength is their midfield - Sigurdsson especially. They can't really play that long ball game as it doesn't suit their personnel.

Yes, I take the point but all week we've been directed to Swansea for their growing confidence and the way the new manager had firmed them up as a unit, 'hard work, easy weekend' is the mantra, think it's a but unrealistic to expect them to revert to whipping boys because it suits who you want to pick fantasy wise this week, the example of Burnley was to show how difficult Chelsea found it against a well drilled and confident side.

For all Chelsea's strength at home, Costa has more or less fallen off a cliff (when you consider his first 15 games output to his last 8, can we be sure that he's not just seeing out the season until he moves?) with Hazard a wonder goal against Arsenal from not being that far behind for how much he costs.

Not saying they won't beat Swansea but not sure this fixture looks as enticing for any assets as Everton do at home to a disgusting Sunderland side.

He looks as committed as ever to me. Underlying stats still holding up - Lukaku and Sanchez both had just 4 SoT before their biggest hauls if the season.

Swansea attack I have no problem with - but in defence they are still struggling.

I went against my previous position of waiting for the FA Cup games and got him in for Ibra, who needs more chances to score than Andy Cole did. He could be rested v Wolves and the price fluctuations forced my hand.

I am with you on this one Jonty - I captained him away to Swansea and he rewarded me with two goals. He loves a goal v Swansea and I don't think a rejuvenated Swans will keep Chelsea out.

Let's not forget he got two assists v Arsenal too. It's not only about goals. And Burnley at home are a nightmare for anyone.

Armband is on Lukaku right now but I may well switch to the crazy Brazilian / bluff Spaniard.

Against Arsenal, he didn't have a very good game upfront and still got 2 assists out of it. Should have easily been more.

I was harsh. He is good when fit but I always worry he is going to injure himself eating his breakfast or something. Also, Anichebe isn't playing at all so even if Carroll puts in two 2 point performances, it is an improvement. He is on pens and with Snodgrass now in the team the crosses will be coming in for him. Not worth a hit but get an Everton defender in before gw28?

If Man City win tonight, they will be 8 pts behind Chelsea.
It will be interesting to see how Chelsea react if City put some pressure on them.

If it gets down to 5 pts, then yes.

    Morning all

Glad that I at least went for the right captain this week for a change (Sanchez).

60 points all out with De Roon coming off the bench with 3 for Andy Carroll. Otherwise not much doing. Baines clean sheet. Ibra assist, Siggy assist. Not too bad and hopefully a small green arrow.

Bit nervous about tonight and a demolition job by Jesus & Co...

GW26 captain is a straight call between Hazard and Lukaku for me. At the moment my instinct is saying Hazard but Lukaku is extremely tempting given Sunderland’s defence.

Can’t give it to Alli on current form.

Will be benching Ibra in anticipation of GW27 (and to a lesser extent 29).

I'm currently on Lukaku for captiain.... far too risky to not do so?!

West Ham's fixtures look good over the next five bar Chelsea in gw27 (wat, CHE, bou, LEI, hul).
If you could pick one West Ham midfielder, ignoring price, who would you go for?

    A) Antonio
    B) Lanzini
    C) Snodgrass
