Hunting Fantasy Football’s Biggest Trolls – Form

The word “troll” is a popular term within the Fantasy Football community, referring to a frustrating player who fails to score when expected and are prone to surprise points hauls.

My observation is that there are two types of troll:

Form Trolls who score big points over a sustained period of fixtures only to blank over the next Game week.

Fixture Trolls who under performs against a weakened team but score highly against stronger opponents.

This article will concentrate on Form Trolls (see part one for Fixture troll analysis.)

Concept

To analyse a form troll I first need to define a player in Form and a Form Troll.

Form – player must have at least 5 PPG (average points per game) from the previous three fixtures

Maintains Form – a Form player who scores over 5 points in a Gameweek

Form Troll – a Form player who scores less than 5 points in a Gameweek

With that in mind let’s take Everton striker Romelu Lukaku as an example and calculate the proportion of times he delivers or lets us down after a run of form.

He is a player that my earlier analysis of fixtures showed was not a fixture troll, as he delivered in the main when expected. But, given his reputation is he perhaps a form troll? Let’s find out.

According to my analysis Lukaku has a troll percentage of 50%, from 14 occasions when in form. I think it is difficult to maintain a three game 5PPG so anything above a 65% is classified as a Form Troll. As with the fixture analysis this reveals that the Belgian marksman is certainly not a troll.

Now thanks to Lukaku we have a method of calculating and determining a Form Troll so can summarise other top owned players below. Remember a score above 65% and the troll alarm bells start ringing.

Form Troll Conclusion

Following this analysis five form trolls have emerged – Jermain Defoe, Ross Barkley, Roberto Firmino, Christian Eriksen and Gareth McAuley.

This quintet could be seen as risky captain choices for upcoming double Gameweeks and are proven to not sustain form as well as other top popular players.

This data also highlights that if these players score heavily in a single Gameweek, jump on the “band wagon” early as they are capable of short term form but you may miss out if you hold a week for further review.

The other note is these players can often get double figure points, which could boost their three game PPG, so captaining a week following a explosive points performance is not recommended

Taking into account both from and fixture trolling, Ross Barkley is the only player who falls under both Troll categories. He is a very risky captain choice in Gameweek 28 when the FA cup impacts the fixtures and he becomes a captain option in a small pool of playing assets.

Thanks for this. Really adds to the fixture analysis and good to see that Lukaku is no form troll either. Bodes well for GWK 26 captaincy.

So to clarify my understanding, these players are more likely to score big points seemingly at random, rather than going on reliable 'purple patches'? I.e just because they scored the last 2 weeks, doesn't make them more likely to keep scoring. But on the other hand, an argument could presumably be made that they shouldn't be sold when they're underperforming as they could start scoring again at any point.

I guess my main take away would be not to captain any these 'trolls' as they're inconsistent - but having them in my team is no bad thing.

That's my take on it. Lukaku - good to own and captain. Costa very good to own and captain. Barkley - good to own but never captain and never expect him to score when you want.

Oops - just put the arm band on Barkley for GW26 as a differential

'For defender 4 ppg has been applied as defenders generally score lower compared to midfield and defenders*'

    should be forwards 🙂

Great read. Just a bit confusing on certain parts where I believe form troll should be used we are still referring to fixture troll which was from the previous article. Start of concept discussion in paragraph 6 ends with a fixture troll question, should be form troll, start of conclusion first paragraph should be form trolls.

Good read, thanks for this. When you asked us who we thought were trolls, Firmino was my first thoughT, interesting that the data backs that up.

I think its OK to have a player from this list but you need to be aware that they may not deliver for a while and its probably not a good idea to fill your team with them, that could get very frustrating and end up transferring out a player just before his haul! (thus confirming their troll status!)

    A) Costa

    B) Hazard

    C) Zlatan

Nice article, thanks for that. It confirms what our suspicions are about certain players, Eriksen especially in my case. I would definitely caution having more than one or two in the side at any one time. Defoe is an interesting one too, I've considered getting him in but the stats above suggest that it might end up being ultimately frustrating.

Haha, I enjoy this article. Still Fuchs was my worst pickup this season but Firmino has trolled me pretty hard. Incidentally, I've managed to catch most of McAuley's hauls and have him benched for the 2-neg pointers.

Good article. I think it shows that if you see one of these players in a run of rich form then you need to be wary jumping on the bandwagon as their form might suddenly fall off a cliff.

For me it has typically been Barkley, Firmino and Lallana who 'troll' me, posting huge scores when I don't have them and then as soon as I get them in their run of form seems to come abruptly to an end...! Very frustrating.

In my opinion, Lukaku's only unexpected failures this season were in game-weeks 6 and 22.

The other game-weeks that you have marked as Troll performances were either away at Chelsea in GW11 or following scores of 2 or less in the previous game-week.

Looking at Costa's stats actually makes me want to captain him v SWA rather than Lukaku...although the Belgian also has a great fixture.

Costa is the anti-Troll with his lowly 20% troll rate.

Costa is certainly an anti-troll, but also generally anti-explosive as well. This is why I never fear not owning him. I guess it depends what you want from your captain, but the thought of a possible explosion is a big attraction for me.

Queue a Costa hattrick next week 🙂

I'm not sure if you are alluding to his real stats as he has had like 1 shot on target over the last 3 games

I was referring to his troll % in the article.

But seeing as you mention his other recent stats....

A goal and two assists in his last four - that included Burnley away, Arsenal and Liverpool.

4 SoT over the last four....exactly the same as Lukaku in the four games before Bournemouth visited. We know what happened there.

Also he has seven goals against Swansea so far.

So yes...his recent stats are pretty good. 🙂

One name that is conspicuously missing from the troll list is Philippe Coutinho.

He's both a form and fixture troll.

He has a 70% troll percentage.
He scored 33 pts in 7 games vs top 6 and 29 in the same number of games vs bottom 6.

Like Barkley, apparently he's a player that you either hold and keep indefinitely or stay away from.

Very interesting wish I had included now him sadly he wasn't in the top scoring players when I extracted the data. I am Liverpool fan probably subconsciously didn't want to out him 🙂 but cheers for pointing and working it out dark lord

    Very interesting, top marks!

One thought I have as an Eriksen owner - not surprised to see he's a form troll but I know he likes his home comforts, I would be interested to see home/away fixtures taken into account. Although I wouldn't want to overly complicate it and I do like the simplicity of your method.

Thank you for taking the time to put this together!

Great article. Would've been nice to see some other players like Brunt, Mane, Sterling and Kun. Also I'm assuming Form looks at the last 3 games regardless if a player was injured/benched or not? E.g. Was Ibra out of form after gw 12 given that he did not feature? gw10 - 2pts, gw11 - 12pts, gw12 - 0pts
